Dog Training Advice

Dog training is a process in which the dog is made to learn to obey the various commands made by his master. These commands may range from saying 'sit' to make the dog sit, to saying 'go' to make the dog chase some intruder.

The most important dog training advice any individual can give you, is to train them while they are young. Like kids, puppies are impressionable at the young age. Therefore, teaching them at this age will make sure that they learn fast and, more importantly, don't develop any bad habits.

Obedience training ensures that your dog grows up to be well behaved, and adjust to any situation. Lack of obedience in dogs can result in unnecessary aggressive behavior. Although professional dog trainers can train your dog for you, it's ideal for you as the owner of the dog, to train the dog yourself. This will help in building a good rapport between you and your pet. One of the most important aspect of this is timing, when the dog makes a mistake, make it a point to correct him at that very point of time. This will make the dog relate between the mistake and your attitude.

Avoid punishing the dog physically when he indulges in some undesired dog behavior. Studies reveal that, harsh punishments induced on the dogs end up making them more aggressive and live in constant fear, thus making it difficult for them to relate with the master. You can use more lenient means such as not paying any attention to them when they do some undesired act. Dogs crave for attention, and therefore when you ignore them in order to punish them, they will be able to associate the undesired act and the punishment, and avoid doing the mistake again.

Not many dogs like being leashed, and hence it can be very difficult to leash your. But leashing on the other hand makes dog training easier as there is less distraction. To make your dog get accustomed to leash, you should try and make the dog associate leash with some pleasant activity or thing. Placing the collar and leash on the dogs, while they are having food, makes them associate leash with food, or placing it while you take them out for a stroll makes them relate it to a pleasant outing.

Last, but one of the most important dog training advice is to be patient with your dogs. Like humans, even dogs differ in behavior and grasping speed. Some pet dogs may learn in a week, while some may take a whole month or more. This is where your patience will come into picture. If you want your dog to be well disciplined, you will have to inculcate some discipline as well as patience in yourself. Even if it takes a week or few months, understand that your dog is taking one step towards perfection, with each passing day. Being patient will surely yield good results in the end.

Despite what it seems to be from a distance, dog training doesn't need you to be a fearless Hercules, all it asks of you is to keep a few basics in mind. First, establish who the boss is, remind your dog again and again that you are the one on two feet while he is still on all fours, and thus what you say is Gospel and what he barks is not. Second, speak in a tone which oozes superiority, something on the lines of your first grade math teacher. Third, routine is everything so keep your training tactics consistent. Once you master these three techniques you will be the master of every single dog around!

Treat your pup the way you would treat a little kid, setting it strict boundaries and letting it know what goes and what most definitely doesn't. Establish gestures like pointing etc. which will give the dog a cue to act in a certain way.

You might not think it possible but dogs, like your kids, can tell when you mean business, slacken up a bit with them and they'll know you can be taken for a ride. Interestingly enough they also have this instinct for intonation; be strict when you want him to stay put at the yard, but be enthusiastic when you are asking him if he would like to go for a walk. It's funny how you'll see your own mood reflected in his responses. This is the primary step for you to establish the kind of communication with your dog which will allow you to calm him or set him up for work with a single word.

One of the main methods of training your dog is to keep a certain consistency in your approach towards him. Keep your intonations, gestures and words for expressing dissatisfaction the same every time, so that he gets used to the idea easily. A young pup who grows up with a certain set of commands will respond to them more promptly than one who is frequently confused by conflicting orders. The more consistent your commands are, the better trained your dog is, the better trained your dog is the greater your confidence in him regarding his obedience to you. A few other ways of establishing consistency are to use the same door when taking your doggie out for a walk, give him the same kind of pat every night before retiring for the day, so that he knows exactly what time it is.

Little things like these will help you predict your dog's behavior more accurately. Most importantly, however, remember to shower your love and affection on the little one, continue your training through little games which he might enjoy, and remember to treat him every time he does a task well, after all like a child it too needs to be appreciated and given its bit of fun.

Dog Training Housebreaking

1.  Never confine your puppy to the crate unless you are at home and can observe them. The only exception to this is at night when you are going to sleep.  In the day, after an hour in the crate, give your puppy the chance to eliminate outside.  Put your puppy on a leash, take them to their designated elimination spot, and give them puppy 3 - 5 minutes to produce.

2.  If your puppy does not eliminate during the time you've given them, then just return them to their crate.  However, if they do eliminate then immediately give them praise, or reward them with treats and/or playtime.  Let your puppy run freely in the house.  Once you know they have just eliminated, you can be almost certain there won't be an accidents.  After a bit of free time, have your puppy return to their crate, and be ready to take them back outside in another 45 - 60 minutes from their last bathroom break.

3.  An easy way to keep track of the bathroom breaks is to keep a journal of your puppy's routine.  So long as you feed your puppy at a scheduled time each day, their need to eliminate should correspond with that time.  After you know what time of day your puppy needs to eliminate, begin taking them outside only at those times instead of once an hour.

4.  Once you get to this point, and your puppy is able to roam freely in the house, you should put them in the crate about an hour before their scheduled elimination time.  Doing this prevents your puppy from eliminating earlier than expected.  Being consistent with your training and giving them ample praise and rewards for eliminating outside, will make your puppy be more reliable at holding it until you take them out.  When your puppy is successful with this, begin reducing the amount of time your puppy is confined before their bathroom break.  In the end you will not need to confine your puppy in order for them to hold it until you take them outside.

5.  It is vital to create a routine, so your puppy learns to eliminate in the correct place while you are present.  Being present when your puppy eliminates gives you the chance to praise them, and will decrease the chances accidents in the house.

6.  When you are not at home make sure you don't let your puppy have free reign of the house.  Instead confine them to a small area such as the kitchen, or a bathroom where the floors are stain and water-resistant.  And remember that confinement to this area is not the same as crate training.

7.  It is likely that your puppy will have accidents during house breaking, and you must remember not to punish them for it.  The best way to train a puppy or dog is to reward the good behavior, instead of punishing the bad.  If your puppy has accidents, then go back to the steps where you are supervising them when they have free reign of the house, and using the crate to encourage them to hold it.

Dog Training Forum

If you are a website owner you know that the key to creating revenue or exposure to your website is traffic. The bottom line is that you need people coming to your website on a consistent basis in order to make money and achieve success. So what are some ways to promote a website successfully? Sure, there are many website promotion tactics, but today I want to share with you five methods that I use to promote my website on a daily basis.

1. Article marketing. Article marketing has been and will continue to be one of the best free methods for promoting a website. Articles can be written fairly quickly, and are an excellent source of traffic generation.

2. Blog commenting. Finding blogs that are popular in your niche and commenting on them can be very popular. For instance if you are in the dog training niche, find a blog of someone who is already successful and provide valuable insight on that blog.

3. Forum marketing is another great way to promote a website successfully. I have found that contributing valuable and unique information in forums can really make a difference in your website traffic.

4. Post some videos on YouTube. Actually I have not done much of this, but I am constantly hearing great things about this method. As such, I am going to really ramp up my video marketing efforts this year.

5. Last but not least try an eBay classified ad. These ads are very low cost as opposed to some other advertising methods, but can really give you great quality. It is not uncommon for me to see several hundred visitors a month from each ad that I post, which is why I like to post a dozen or more each month. If you are looking to promote a website successfully this could be your golden ticket.

Dog Training Course

Dog training courses can mean the difference between having a happy dog and happy life - or not. Dogs are happier, healthier and safer when they have loving boundaries set for them and that's what dog training courses help you learn to set for your dog.

First let's take a look at the overall methods that dog training courses use. If you find a method that suits you best, you will know the type of course that will best for you and your dog.

Types of Dog Training Courses

Reward Training: Emphasizes positive reinforcement -- instead of punishing or yelling at your dog for what you don't want him to do, you reward your dog for doing what you want him to do. Rewards consist of praise and petting as well as treats. Treats are especially used in the early learning stages of a new behavior.

Dog Whispering: Dog Whispering is more of a general philosophy than a method. This is a more advanced method that should taken on by dog lovers who feel very confident in their connection with their dogs and are interested in learning about canine behaviors, motivation and body language.

Choke or Check Collar Training: Choke collars are collars that slip over a dogs head onto it neck and tighten down on the dogs neck when it pulls too hard on its leash. Choke collars were designed for professional trainers and for limited use - there is a health risk to your dog's neck and trachea when using them. In general, dog training courses that emphasize choke or check collar training are not recommended.

Prong Collar Training: Don't even think about this method. A prong collar has metal ends that stick into a dog's flesh and digs into its neck when it pulls on its leash. Inhumane period!

Head Collar Training: Very humane collar that gently redirects a dog's attention or the way you want him to go instead of punishing or hurting him as the two methods directly above do. Very effective especially when used with Reward Training.

Clicker Training: This method takes a hand-held clicker which, oddly enough, makes a "clicking" noise when squeezed. During clicker training, a dog is reinforced in behaviors with doggie treats paired with the clicking noise. At some point, the treats will be eliminated and the dog will know it has done something right simply by hearing the clicking noise. Very effective.

Electric Collar Training: As the name implies, this type of training involves your dog wearing a collar in which you are able to administer an electric shock to discourage certain behaviors. this method should only be used by professional trainers in the most extreme circumstances.

Ultrasonic Whistle Training: You know of the dog whistles that you can't hear but a dog can - right? This method uses these whistles to get your dog's attention as well as to train him. You will need to be trained in this method first.

Dog Training Manual

The purpose of this article is to improve the publicÂ’s knowledge about dogs, the West Highland Terrier in particular. Many people decide that they want a dog based off of appearance alone. While this may not be a terrible thing to do if the person has the ability to accommodate all types of dogs, for some individuals the care for specific types of dog breeds is not possible. The best way to avoid any surprises after the adopting or purchase of a dog is to understand the breed and what it takes to care for it. We will go over some of the basic characteristics of the West Highland Terrier to help you get a better understanding of the West Highland Terrier as a breed and possibly a new addition to your family.

The West Highland Terrier, or “Westie”, is a small high spirited breed with a shrill voice and insatiable appetite for companionship. The Westie is very easy to keep fed due to their small size at 11 inches and 19 lbs. The main drawback to this breed is the constant need for bathing since their snow white coat dirties easily and quickly. The Westie, as small as they are, will make a great protector of the home, as I am not sure they know their actual size. This is an ideal breed for families and individuals alike.

We hope that we have assisted you I your quest for knowledge and understanding of the West Highland Terrier. Please look below for some additional resources. The first thing you will want to do is see what the West Highland Terrier looks like. The next thing you will need to do is house train your West Highland Terrier. We find that one of the most common reasons that someone will get rid of West Highland TerrierÂ’s is that they are not house trained. There is a wonderful manual that can be used and you will find the link below. Lastly we want you to show off your new West Highland Terrier. There is a wonderful online dog community complete with a forum for you to post pictures to. Check it out.

The key to success is to love your West Highland Terrier and nothing will help you achieve that more than bonding with them. Spend time with your West Highland Terrier and make them a happy and healthy addition to your family.

Gun Dog Training

German Shepherds make excellent guard dogs for a number of reasons. They are strong, clever and highly obedient which makes training German Shepherds a pleasant task. Only specific dogs have the ability to be trained to work with people and the public. Guard dogs are used by the police, private security companies and for personal use. Many people have bought a German Shepherd as a family dog and if the dog shows potential during basic obedience training they might want to advance and train the dog to be a guard dog.

Training should start when the dog is still young because this is when the dog will want to learn. You can train your German Shepherd the basic skills of obedience training and scent discrimination yourself without any assistance. After your German Shepherd has mastered the basics and if you are prepared to advance you might want to approach your local dog club for advice in training a guard dog. In order for your dog to become an official guard dog you will have to attend guard dog trials. Guard dogs are required to complete various tests as well as be able to past a character test.

The following criteria are included in most guard dog trials:

  • Basic obedience exercises
  • Scent discrimination
  • No gun shyness
  • Protective instinct
  • Listening skills
  • Following of orders

Trainers and officials will assist you in preparing your German Shepherd for guard dog training trials. Your German shepherd needs to be able to perform a number of exercises in order to pass the test. Some examples of the exercises asked in guard dog training are:

  • Simulated attacks on the dog and its master
  • Flight of the attacker
  • Pursuit by the dog
  • Barking and alerting of danger
  • Locate hiding persons
  • Keep a supposed criminal in place

Having a German Shepherd trained as a guard dog can be an asset to your personal protection and the safety of your family. Remember that not all dogs are able to under go the advance training of becoming a guard dog as it requires special behavioral traits and personality.

Dog Agility Training

Using a leave command will give you much greater control over what your dog eats and sniffs when you are out walking the streets. You can also use it at home or any situation. The leave command is essentially a word that tells your dog not to sniff or eat something and it is the first step in training food refusal. There is not usually a hand signal involved in this type of training because it is more than likely used when you are walking and as your dog may be on the leash, you will not have your hands free.

Why should I use a leave command?

A leave command is a very useful tool to have in your dog training toolkit because it is easy to train and can be used in a variety of situations. It is also very important because it can stop your dog from eating something that may make it sick or may cause choking.

How do I start training a leave command?

Choose the word you want to use - some trainers use the word 'leave'. You can do either or both of the following. For the quickest and best results, do both and ask someone to help you when training food refusal. When you are out in the street and your dog goes to sniff or eat something off the ground, say 'leave' and keep walking. Don't give your dog the opportunity to get to it anyway by walking quickly away. Because this is a form of capturing, it will take some time because you are reliant on there being something on the ground. The second method is better because you have full control and can practise it anytime.

Choose a food that your dog likes and leave a very small pile on the ground. Put your dog on the leash and walk by the food. Walk close enough for him to sniff it but not too close so he can reach it. Give the leave command just as your dog goes for the food. In all good training timing is everything. Your dog needs to understand what you want straight away. You need to interrupt his behaviour as soon as it starts.

When you are walking past, give your dog praise. If you want to use treats to reward him, wait until you are five paces away. Your dog needs to learn that he is being rewarded for leaving the food on the ground and walking away so putting a small distance between the treat and the food on the ground will reinforce this.

FOOD REFUSAL

Food refusal can save your dog from eating poisoned food or over eating. Training food refusal may take a long time depending upon your dog's appetite and with some breeds like Labradors it needs constant practise and reminders.

Before you begin food refusal, choose an 'eat' command. Some people use 'eat' and others 'OK'. Whatever word you choose has to be different from any other word you use for your training.

Put your dog on his leash and get him into a sit. Ask someone to walk up to him and offer him some treats. It is important that you keep your dog in a sit and only let him have the treats when you say so. If he learns forward and stands up, re-command him into a sit and ask the person with the food to step away. When he can sit and wait for your command to eat, that's when he has learnt what you want. Now you have to practise and start making his training more intense.

Remember: always give your dog or puppy the opportunity to correct his behaviour and do the right thing. It is up to you to teach him what is acceptable and what is not. Reward acceptable behaviour; discourage unacceptable behaviour by using loud unpleasant noises, withdrawal of attention or treats or leaving your puppy on its own. Never hit or strike your puppy; you will only be teaching him that violence is an acceptable behaviour in your pack and he may use it on other pack members or friends including children.

The Cockapoo is also known as cockerpoo, spoodle and cockerdoodle. They have been popular in the United States since the 1950Â’s.

The Cockapoo is what is known as a hybrid dog. They have the best qualities of the American Coker Spaniel and the Poodle (usually a minature or toy poodle). This, of course, is assuming these dogs are not bred from defective cockers or poodles.

CocapooÂ’s are noted for their wonderful dispositions. These dogs are intelligent, sweet natured, affectionate and friendly. They have a forgiving nature that make them an ideal dog

for children. Their personality is unparalled in their ability to relate to people especially children. Therefore they make great family pets and even get along well with other dogs.

They have low shedding coats with very little dander which is the culprit in allergies people have to dogs. So they make a great choice for these people.

They are eager to please and easily trained.

CockapooÂ’s have a lower incidence of gentic defects than their parental breeds. You do need to keep their ears clean because they are prone to ear infections.

They tend to live a long lifeÂ….18-22 years.

They come in four sizes:

Teacup – under 6 pounds

Toy – under 12 pounds

Miniature – 13-18 pounds

Maxi/Standard – over 19 pounds

A cockapoo has a sturdy appearance. Their eyes are large, round, well spaced with an intelligent expression. Their eyes can be dark brown or hazel. Cars hang fairly close to their head and are feathered. Their tails can be docked or well featured and full coated if long.

The have three different coat types:

Tight curly coat

Medium curl coat

Flat coat

They come in many colors: any solid color, Parti color(solid with white), phaniton (brown, black, silver body with contrasting color on legs), tri-color, merle or roam.

Dog Behavior Training

Dog aggression is a very common problem facing millions of pet owners, and can be due to a variety of genetic and environmental issues. Aggressive behavior can have very serious consequences and must be dealt with immediately before someone is injured. Aggression in dogs can be triggered for a variety of reasons so it should be handled in many different ways.

Aggressive dog behavior can be a serious issue for many people who simply don't know how to deal with the behavior. Aggression is a common problem, and can be seen in all breeds of dogs, although some breeds have a predisposition to display this behavior.

Dog aggression is a complex issue and professional assistance is recommended in helping to correct the problem. It should be noted that it is not just a dog problem, it is also a human problem. You must understand that aggressive behavior in your dog is a serious and dangerous situation.

An important part of dealing with aggressive behavior is determining the reason behind the aggression. Dogs are generally aggressive for one of four reasons: they are fearful, they want to dominate, they are possessive, or they have a strong predatory instinct.

Although aggression is an undesirable trait in a family pet, it is part of your dog's natural way to communicate. Dog-dog aggression is a potentially serious problem for dogs, (or humans who may be drawn into the conflict). It is important to remember that dog-dog aggression is never acceptable and this must be made crystal clear to your pet every time it happens.

Dog aggression is a common behavior which is derived from the fact that dogs are pack animals. It is a normal instinct for them to compete from the time they are born. Dominant aggressive dogs are overly protective of their status and possessions.

The most effective way to stop aggressive behavior is through training. Humans commonly reinforce dog aggression by trying to soothe the dog with affection instead of letting him know that this behavior is unacceptable. You must recognize that aggressive dog behavior is very serious and it must be controlled before it escalates. Aggressive behavior can be caused by a variety of factors, but most of them can be controlled with proper training.

Regardless of the method that you choose to stop your dog's aggressive behavior, it's essential that you take action to put an end to it right away before it becomes a serious issue. If you want to stop aggressive dog behavior towards strangers, you must recognize that proper socialization of your dog is the most important, first step of training your dog.

If you want to stop aggressive dog behavior, you must be consistent in your obedience training efforts and remain patient as dog aggression is a problem that cannot be cured overnight.
