A dog can be a very good companion for just about anyone. You really only need to have the time, a good home, and money to care for your pet. Dogs are prejudice to only one thing, mistreat them and they will not like you. Other than that, dogs will love you no matter what. They can truly be man's or woman's best friend.

What kind of dog do you want? What size of dog can you really keep for your living situation? Big dogs need more room and leave bigger piles behind them when they defecate. Smaller dogs can be more yappy and snappy than larger dogs. Do you want a purebred or just a mixed breed, or a mutt as they are called.

With purebred dogs you can be assured of the size and of the temperament of a particular breed. With temperament you have a lot to do with this too on how the dog is treated. Some purebreds can have genetic problems with their physical makeup and this will not show up till the dog gets some age on. Quality breeders will select good mates to keep this problem down. But here again the mutt can have a bad gene passed on to it too.

Mutts or mixed breed dogs can grow into any size. Mixed breeds seem to be healthier as a hole over purebred dogs, as a lot of people believe, but this is not always true. Temperament can be anything, but here again; you can have a lot to do with it also. But some dogs do have traits of being very friendly to every body, and some are known for being very protective and not friendly at all.

If you want a dog and do not know what breed to get, first decide what you want in the dog as far as size and traits or concerned. This way you will know what breeds to choose from and what breeds to stay away from. This will give you a good starting point.

Even when looking at mixed breeds, you can tell somewhat kind of mix the dog has in it. This will give you somewhat of an idea of what to expect when the dog grows to full size. With any dog when it is just a puppy, look at the feet to get an idea of how big it will grow. Just compare known purebreds puppies feet size to its body and us this to judge the mixed breeds size.

When it comes to a dog's temperament, you can only go by what the breed has shown to be in the past. Yes if you mistreat any dog you can make it mean. But there are some breeds that are better than others when it comes to getting along with everyone. Not all dogs will like everyone, especially any one that is not one of the family that the dog is use to being around. Ever been a stranger in a house that has a Chihuahua living in it?

The best thing that you can do when picking out a puppy or even a full-grown dog is to spend some time with it. You will get to see how the dog reaches to difference situations. See if the dog is skittish or willing to play. Does he or she like to be handled and seem to enjoy the interaction? Just try to pick the breed that fits your situation the best, and you will have a friend for a long time.
