How to determine whether a pressure gate or a mounted gate would be the best option for you.

The basic difference between a pressure gate and a mounted gate is that most of the time with a pressure gate there is no need to put any screw holes into your door frames or walls.

The pressure screws in either side of the gate ( top and bottom) simply screw out from the sides of the gates towards the walls until sufficient pressure holds the gate firmly in place.

With mounted gates, a bracket must be secured to the wall on both sides, and then the gate is attached to the brackets. One of the wall brackets will be a hinge, which allows the gate to swing from that side. The other bracket will contain the latching mechanism, to lock the gate in the closed position.

Although the decision on which gate type to purchase usually comes down to a desire not to have to put screw holes in your walls, there are more variables to consider.

Pros and Cons of a Pressure Gate:

Pros:

most of the time there is no need for screws in your walls or door frames
pressure gates often include a centered swinging doorway
gate extensions can be added to either side or both sides of the gate
easier to install and uninstall
can easily be moved to any location in your home

Cons:

not as strong as a mounted gate (less secure ??)
maximum width is around 60 inches
variable width is only 4 to 5 inches (measurements need to be accurate)

Pros and Cons of a Mounted Gate:

Pros:

highest level of security and safety
can be extended to almost any width with the use of extensions and extension stabilizer bars
variable width is usually between 12 and 24 inches

Cons:

requires screws in the door frames or walls
more difficult to assemble and disassemble
not very portable
extensions can only be added to one side
swinging doorway is not centered when extensions are used

Alternatives:

To provide the option for a more secure pressure gate, manufacturers often include pressure screw receptors ( cup shaped accessories), which can be screwed into the wall or door frame. The pressure screws on the gate fit into these receptors providing for a more slip resistant gate.

Another alternative that many people are now adopting are the newer "free standing" gates which as the term implies, do not connect with walls or door frames in any way. These gates have a "Tee" end on both sides, which provides the stability.

The "free standing" gates can be applied to suit just about any width requirement. They are obviously less stable than either the pressure gates or the mounted gates, but they are finding a very positive acceptance in the market place.

Making your choice:

Choose you pet gate or baby gate wisely ensuring that your gate supplies the level of safety and security that you require. Getting the right gate from the start will provide you with peace of mind and a much happier experience in the long run.
