How do I stop my dog from chewing on his tags and charms?

I have a maltese puppy and I got him an engraved dog tag with his name and my phone number on it. I also got him a little charm to wear too..just for decoration. Well, somehow he got the dog tag in his mouth and chewed the heck out of it, so now it's hard to see my phone number and it's basically worthless. He also ripped off the charm and hid it in his bed. Luckily he didn't swallow it because it's real small. How do I stop him from doing this again? I have to get him a new dog tag. He can't go around without a tag showing his name and my phone number, so how can I stop him from chewing on it and ruining it? He doesn't do it often while I'm around, instead he does it when he's alone in his bed. He just chews on it because he's bored I guess.
Bonzie, that's a good suggestion but he freaks out when I take his collar off. It's like he feels naked without it on or something.

remove the collar when he is in the house, that way he can't chew on it. Also, maybe the collar is too lose. If he can get his mouth to the tags, you may be able to tighten up the collar a bit.
