Dog Aggression Training

It is quite natural that every dog has some form of aggression. However, as domesticated pets, we expect our dogs to be calm to a given extent. Territorial aggression is the most common behavior problem by dogs. This refers to the state in which dogs go absolutely crazy every time strangers approach their homes.

What encourages dogs to display territorial aggression?

Every dog has the natural instinct to defend his home and what he considers his territory. While this is perfectly acceptable, there are circumstances in which the aggressive behavior by the dog seems to go overboard.

There are circumstances in which a dog's aggressive behavior escalates and knowing why the dog is behaving in a certain aggressive way could help you know the action to take to improve on his behavior. Aggressive behavior may be experienced in the following circumstances:

1. Aggressive behavior by a dog gets compounded when a person drops off a package at your house and then leaves immediately thereafter. In such circumstances, your dog assumes that he is responsible for driving off this person and this increases his aggression.

2. Dogs experience increased territorial aggression when riding in cars and this makes them to bark continuously at everything that seems to be in motion outside the cars. By barking at the objects outside the car, the dog is actually demanding that these people as well as things keep off what he considers his territory. Because no one actually approaches the car, such dogs may consider themselves winners and may bark even louder in celebration of their success.

3. Dogs may also experience increased territorial aggression whenever they act out and bark at the door, (whatever their reasons may be) and their owners yell at them to keep quiet. This serves to create more aggression although many dog owners do not realize this. Unknown to most dog owners, the dog actually thinks your yelling at him is in support of his barking and this makes him bark even more.

4. When you isolate them and lock them up because you have visitors in the house, dogs can experience increased territorial aggression. During such times, dogs actually know that there are strangers in the house. A dog is able to identify the smell of the visitors whom he considers intruders. Since he is locked away and feels unable to do anything about the intruding group, his anxiety level rises and this leads to increased behavioral problems.
