Ada County Pet of the Week: Charlie the dog
Charlie, 4, is a male purebred English setter. His previous owner could no longer afford to keep him.

Choosing a dog to be a family pet is a difficult decision to make. Not only do you have to pick the right dog but you are responsible for your pet for itÂ’s whole life. Your new best friend will make a significant impact on your life. Pick the right dog and it will enrich your life. Go for the wrong breed and you and your dog may well be extremely miserable indeed.

Unfortunately, many folks thinking about a dog and which breed to choose make size or the way the look their number one priority, yet, however there is much more in finding the right dog for you family than meets the eye. Picking a dog breed whose natural manner and requirements fit into your life is your first stop.

Your fist step in attaining your is to go for the best breed category. This way you will be considering dog breeds whose natural characteristics should make them more successful for your family.

Fortunately for you, originations all over the world have adopted a system of assigning different dog breeds in broad categories by the type of job they were bred for. A great place to start your research is your national canine organization. The one to examine are: American Kennel Club, UK Kennel Club and Canadian Kennel Club.

Usually the following categories to separate the different dog breeds:

Hunting Dogs (Gundogs)

Working Dogs

Utility Dogs

Terriers

Toy Dogs

Hounds

Lets take a look at these categories in depth.

Hounds were bred for their keen sense of smell and sight. Again they were used (and still are) for hunting. Dogs in this group make great pets but must have lots of exercise if you are to make them happy in your family. Well known breeds include: Daschunds, Basset Hounds, Irish Wolfhounds, Deerhounds, Beagles, Whippets and Greyhounds. You may have noticed there great variation in stature in this group.

Hunting dogs were bred originally for searching for and recovering game. Typically they are easily trainable, loyal and companionable animals. They make fantastic pets and have a idealall-round temperament which makes for easy integration into homes with children. They do often need lots of exercise and crave attention which if not given often leads to behavior difficulties. The hunting dog group can be segmented into four sub-groups: Spaniels, Hunt/Point/Retrieve, Retrievers, and Setters.

Toy dogs are the tiny companions and lap animals of the canine catagories. Althoug each dog was used for a certain use, they are placed into this group for their size. Typically, toy dogs are amicable and faithful, and need lots of care. They are intelligent and are easily over indulged as their masters can be poor on obedience due to their diminutive size. In this group are: Chihuahuas, Pugs, Papillions, Yorkshire Terriers and Poodles.

In the beginning, all terriers were used in order to hunt unwanted rodents like . They are usually small dogs, as they needed to be lower to the ground to seize the vermin and other pests that they hunted. These dogs are often brave, and intensely resolute. They are ancient forms of breeds, as far – if not further – than the Middle Ages. Today terriers are thought of as handsome dogs, butthey are better suited tomore expert dog masters because of their more aggressive temperament. Some of the terriers include: Airedale, Boston, Welsh, Border, Wire Fox, Cairn, Jack Russell, Staffordshire, Scottish, Lakeland and West Highland White and Miniature Schnauzer.

Utility dogs are a group of many many different kinds of breeds put in the same catagory because of their non sporting beginnings. They have generally been bred for a specific purpose, but, these functions are greatly varied. Here you will find breeds like: Dalmations, English Bulldogs, American Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Shih Tzus and Poodles. Breeds in this group are often the oldest breeds recorded.

Working dogs have been designed for rescuing, guarding and searching. Example breeds in this group include: Great Danes, Collies, Rottweillers, Mastiffs, Corgis, German Shepherds, Dobermanns, Old English Sheepdogs, Newfoundlands and Boxers. Often called the “champions” of the dog world, being bred to succeed at their particular job.

Having shown you more information about the different groups of dog breed and their virtues you should be able to choose a group and dog suited to you and your family.

How To Choose A Dog Breed
Dog grooming is a career that takes skill, patience, love
Published: Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at 4:01 a.m. Last Modified: Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at 2:04 a.m. WASHINGTON - It's a busy day at the grooming salon at Happy Paws.

If you are struggling with the question of choosing the best dog breed for you and you are thinking about adopting puppies or a dog, it can be a tough question, especially if adopting puppies or dogs is a first experience for you.

If it is your first time adopting puppies, choosing the best breeds can be tricky. If you have children, then you should most certainly choose a dog breed that will be suitable for and will get friendly with children.

It's an acknowledged fact that a few dog breeds may be incline to turn over jealous towards kids in looking for for attention, and that could be unsafe in a home depending on the age of your kids. Consequently, you will want to study the nature of dog breeds, primary dog care know-hows and what sort of surroundings are appropriate for the puppy breed that you may be planning on adopting.

A quick look at the American kennel society you will find they have recognized over 150 dog breeds which also includes companion dogs, working dogs, and more. Every dog owner should realize that certain dogs have personalities of their own hence, they act uncertain ways.

Although many breeds can be best friends for people, it is also crucial to think about the aspects that may go awry when adopting a particular dog breed. Again always keep in mind the question of "is this the best dog breed for me?" A few breeds of dogs demand a single master who will take the command over the dog s behavior and recognize how to correct them. A good illustration of such single master dogs are guard duty dogs used by the police force.

Some dogs really know how to obey people and they will also know how to tease. So read up on the general temperament of the dog and its nature before settling on any dog breeds.

If the puppy breed you select has a calm disposition, then that implies it is easy to discipline and they would in all likelihood make dependable friends with kids. If not so calm of a disposition, That dog breed might a good choice for a guard dog.

Grooming can be a hassle for allot of dog owners but if you check into all relevant data about dog breeds prior to making your choice of purchasing a certain dog breed, then you will have a better idea as to what to expect. Generally, the long hair types are difficult to keep up while the short haired ones are easier to get by.

You may want to familiarize yourself with different grooming methods depending on the dog breed you wish to adopt. With the right consideration of your home environment, and targeted research you'll find that adopting puppies is very rewarding. Choosing the best dog breed for me just became a little less intimidating.

Boxer Dog Origin

This breed originates from Germany and finds its early ancestor to be a mastiff type dog, the large Molossian Hound. Later, this dog evolved into what was called the Bullenbeisser. The Bullenbeiszer's roots go back to Belgium and these ancestors were known as great hunting and working dogs.

Originally used to hunt wild boar and later used for working with cattle these dogs eventually diverged into different types, the smaller of which were called the Brabanter Bullenbeiszer. After mixing with a forerunner of the English Bulldog, the dog became what is known today as the Boxer breed around the mid to late 19th century. The Boxer dog origin and history becomes well documented at that point as dog breed clubs were formed in Germany in the 1860s.

Boxer Dog Breed History

What we know of as the Boxer today can be traced to the 1830s when a breeder crossbred the Brabanter Bullenbeiszer with the English Bulldog, but the Boxer dog breed history really begins in the 1860s as breeders began to establish and develop guidelines for the breed. In 1895 the Boxer Club was formally formed and further improvements were made to the standards of the Boxer dog breed.

Although initially the Boxer dog breed was generally white, by 1925 white was not accepted as a proper color for the breed. In fact, the color of choice now is fawn and brindle and any dog with more than a third of its coat white will be disqualified in AKC events.

This dog breed came to the United States around the beginning of the 1900s but did not become a popular dog breed until the 1940s. The breed was first registered by the American Kennel Club in 1904 and the first Boxer Champion was recognized in 1915. In 1949 a famous Boxer dog, Bang Away, won Best in Show at the Westminster and went on to win 121 more Best in Shows over the course of six years.

Bang Away became a famous dog, appearing on the front of magazine such as Life and Esquire. Due to the success of this one dog, the breed became very popular in the United States at the time and continues to be one of the 10 most popular breeds as determined by the American Kennel Club.

Being a dog owner can be one of the most rewarding things in life and can be even more rewarding if you choose the right dog breed. When you decide to bring a dog or puppy into the home you will soon realize what superb, loving and fantastic companions they will make for your family. However, if you choose the wrong breed of dog for your living situation, it can easily go the other way. Hopefully these quick tips will help you on your way to choosing the right dog for you.

Time and Exercise

Before even beginning your search for a dog, you need to first decide whether or not you have the time to devote to dog ownership. Dogs are extremely social animals and desire your companionship as much as, if not more than, you desire theirs. If your life is busy and hectic right now, dog ownership may not be for you.

For those of you that do live a busy life schedule, and are still determined to choose a dog, then going for a smaller dog breed will be much better than a larger dog breed. Smaller dog breeds, or less active dog breeds, will require less exercise to stay fit and healthy. One caveat you should be aware of is that not all small dog breeds are less active dogs, nor are all large dog breeds more active dogs.

Space and Comfort

The amount of living space you have and the amount of space you are prepared to allot for your dog is a major contributing factor in choosing the breed of dog for you. The most important factor to consider in regards to space is: How active is your dog going to be? If your living space is small, for instance, you may still choose a larger less active dog breed. In contrast, if you choose a highly active small dog breed, you will need to provide the space for them.

In addition to have the space for your dog to reach the activity levels he or she will require, you will also need to choose a dog breed that will live comfortably within your living arrangements. A couple of simple, yet often overlooked questions, one might ask themself when choosing a dog breed are: 'Do I intend on having my dog live outside, am I able to provide a dog house or other means of shelter?' and 'Do I have the extra living space to provide my new dog with his or her own area?'

Available Funds

Yep, money also is a contributing factor to choosing the right dog breed for you. Firstly, can you actually afford the dog itself? Some dog breeds are far more valuable, in a monetary sense, than others. A quick look through your local classifieds will easily inform you of the going rates of particular breeds in your area. Another place you can find information on the prices of dogs is a simple search on the Internet.

The more important things you need to take into consideration are whether you are going to be able to afford to buy dog food, pay for regular vet checkups, medicinal supplies, purchase necessary equipment such as leashes or kennels and grooming. Oh yeah, treats and toys too, dogs love treats and toys.

Every person's life is different and for every person the factors to consider for choosing a dog breed are different. In the end, the right dog breed for you to choose is the dog that best suits your life as it is now.

Cold, hard laughs :Head north this winter for Michigan comedy fest
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- Here's a prescription for curing those midwinter blues: Forget jetting off to Florida or the Caribbean. Instead, spend a long weekend in snowbound, frostbitten northern Michigan.

Question 1: A Timid German Shepherd

I have a dog of breed German shepherd and age 11 months bought from a private breeder when he was only 8 weeks old. He was a well mannered and happy puppy who never got any punishment from any of the family members throughout the period of his stay with us. It is a pity that he has become an introvert. He is afraid of all people other than those in the family and me. Since we are living on a carnation ranch there are a lot of people around the ranch all the time and hence there was no reason for the dog to become shy and scared. I would like know the reason for this sort of behavior by the dog and also the reason for doing this.

Answer 1:

The main reason for this sort of behavior of the dog is lack of proper socialization as a puppy. Living on a carnation ranch and having lots of visitors are not good enough for the puppy's socialization. This requires optimum emotional development for which the puppies have to be petted, talked to and played with, fondled etc. by a large number of people in addition to the members of the family.

It would have been ideal if you had taken your puppy with you on trips to town when it was in the age group of 8 and 16 weeks; it is advisable that the dog is not kept only in the carnation ranch. At the current age of 11 months, the possibility of improving the dog in this aspect is low and the damage appears to be permanent. You could try to take your dog for formal obedience training classes in your area which might help in his confidence building; by doing this there could be a possibility of improving the dog's behavior.

Question 2: What Is The UKC?

I would like to know the following details on UKC.

1. What is UKC?

2. Is it affiliated to AKC?

3. If so, will the dog registered with UKC automatically qualify for registration with the AKC

Answer 2:

The UKC (acronym for United Kennel Club) is the second-largest office for the registering purebred dogs in the USA. Its network of business with breeders and owners has spread to Canada, Mexico, Japan, South Africa etc. For that matter, this has spread throughout the world. This has no affiliation with the AKC (American Kennel Club); it registers dogs which are not recognized by the AKC; also registers dogs which have neither been recognized nor registered.

It is not practicable to give the list of all the breeds recognized and registered by the UKC since the number is very large; however to give you a broad idea this list includes breeds such as Bluetick coonhound, American black and tan coonhound, Plott hound, English shepherd, Collies, Boxers, German Shepherds etc.

Both UKC and AKC have their own standards for the dogs; hence a dog which can be registered under the AKC need not necessarily be recognized by UKC and vice versa.

Adopting a pet is a wonderful idea, but owning one is also associated to having responsibilities. Just because you find a dog to be cute, it does not mean that you have to immediately get it. There are a lot of things that you have to consider before you adopt a pet and bring it to your home. Choosing dog breed quiz will help you determine which dog breed would best suit you.

You have to answer different questions pertaining to the kind of dog that may suit your lifestyle, the size of your home, your availability, and the people that live with you in your house. You have to consider those things to make sure that you can really attend to the needs of the dog and no one will be bothered once the dog gets on its feet inside the house.

What is your objective of having a dog? The usual answer to this question is that some people would want to get a dog to serve as their child's friend. Those who live alone may want to have a companion and would want to have someone (or something) that guards their house. Some people feel secured when they have dogs either to watch over their house or to be with them while they stroll around.

While a dog is under your care, it means that you have to take some time with it. What is your daily routine? How do you want your house to be like? If you want to keep your house clean, make sure your dog would need less drooling and shedding. A dog which is highly socialized is not recommended for you if you are not always at home. Do you travel a lot and want to bring the dog with you? If yes, make sure your dog is suitable for this kind of activity.

Who are the people in your house? Do you have kids or do you always accommodate visitors? Your dog must be socialized enough and must get friendly to strangers eventually. But if you want to feel more secured, perhaps a dog that does not trust strangers easily is good for you. There are also dogs that are kid-friendly even if they are large in size.

You also have to consider the type of house you live in because that is where your dog will also spend his everyday existence. If your house is large enough and has enough outdoor space, any size of dog will be okay. Most dogs need to go out and need daily exercise. But if your house does not have enough indoor or outdoor space, you must consider your availability to take your dog in a park.

How do you do with your financial capabilities? Owning a dog is quite expensive because it needs checkup, professional grooming, right food, and other stuff. A responsible pet owner must not ignore the needs of his or her pet.

All of these questions are the common ones that you will find in choosing dog breed quiz. These factors are all important when you are choosing the temperament, size, abilities, and behaviors of the dog breed that you desire.

When determining which of the top 20 dog breeds to own as a pet, there is a good reason why the above listed breeds are usually chosen by families. Even if you do not have a large family, when seeking a dog to have as a pet you want one that has certain traits. Your pet should be friendly, yet loyal and protective. Your pet should also be tolerant and patient. All of the top 20 dog breeds listed above have each of these qualities.

Some of these dogs such as the Bichon, Basset Hound, Shih tzu, Cairn Terrier, Collie, Pomeranian and Pug are the best dog breed for families with younger children because they are more tolerant of the "accidental" poor behaviors of children like the occasional rough petting or tug. Of course, good and bad dogs can be found in almost any dog b reeds, so if you do have young children you should take your dog ownership seriously and be a responsible pet owner and parent, and never leave your children unattended with your pets.

For people looking for calm dog breeds to own as a pet, there are plenty to choose from in the top 20 dog listed above. The Basset Hound, Shih tzu, Collie, Boston Terrier and Pugs are all playful in their own right, but are also well-known for being calm dog breeds and are perfect for those families that are looking for a dog that is a little less demanding.

Dog ownership can be very rewarding provided you find the right dog breed for you and your family. The best way for you to find the right dog breed is to thoroughly research each of the breeds that you are interested in, and learn as much as you can about them. Dog ownership should be taken very seriously. Even if you find a dog breed within this list of top 20 breeds and you conclude that the dog is not a good fit for you and your family, then you should find another dog to adopt. However, once you take the time to ensure that you are getting the best dog for your family, you will enjoy many years as a happy and proud dog owner.

Dog breeds are certain types of dogs which have distinctive looks and

temperament. Dog breeds can reveal a lot about the size, appearance, and

personality of a canine. Doing research to find out which dog breed will suit

your personality and lifestyle is essential. Dog breeds are plentiful and you

can always find a reputable dog breeder, but it is important that you

understand the dog breed you are interested in before going to the dog

breeder.

Size should be a factor when deciding on which type of breed would be best

for you. Naturally, if you live in a small house or apartment, a smaller dog

would be better, where as a larger dog would be better suited with a large

yard or out in the country.

There are different dog breed groupings consisting of: The Sporting Dogs...

The Hound Dogs...The Working Dogs...The Terriers...The Toy Group...The Non-

Sporting Dogs.

The Sporting dogs were developed as bird dogs. These include the Pointers,

Retrievers, Setters, Spaniels and others.

The Hound dogs were developed to hunt using sight (sight hounds) or scent (

scent hounds). These include the Beagle, Coonhound, Bloodhound and others.

The Working dogs were developed for a variety of jobs, including guarding

property, guarding livestock, or pulling carts. These include the Alaskan

Malamute, Siberian Husky, Bernese Mountain Dogs and others.

The Terrier dogs were developed mainly to hunt vermin and rodents and to dig

them from their burrows or dens. These come in various sizes, from the small

Cairn Terrier to the large Airedale Terrier.

The Toy dogs are small companion breeds that include the Toy Poodles,

Chihuahua,Toy Spaniels, Miniature Pinscher and others. The Toy Group make up

for their small size with their big personalities. These are well suited for

older or disabled people, because they are easier to look after, as they eat

less and need less exercise. Usually, small dog breeds are just ten inches or

less tall at the shoulder. In most breeds, the male is slightly larger than

the female, but the difference is generally small. This is referred to as

breeding true.

The Non-Sporting dogs that do not fit into any of the other groups, are

usually larger than Toy dogs. These include the Miniature Poodles, Boston

Terrier, Bichon Frises and others.

For those who suffer from allergies, a Hypoallergenic dog is a breed that

might enable them to have a pet in their home. Some dog breeds have been

considered as hypoallergenic, such as the Yorkshire Terrier and the Afghan

Hound whose is the same pH as human hair, therefore, creating no threat. Some

other good breed choices for those who have allergies are the Soft-Coated

Wheaten Terrier...Bichon Frisé...Shih Tzu...Bolognese...Poodle...Barbet...

Portuguese Water Dogs...Schnauzer...Maltese. These dogs shed very little of

their hair. However, they do produce dander, but the amount is so small that

very few people experience allergy symptoms when in contact with these breeds.

However, no canine is known to be completely 100% non allergenic.

Hypoallergenic dog breeds are usually single-coated, non-shedding (or low-

shedding), and generally smaller dogs.

The top 5 dogs registered for 2007 with the AKC are:

* Labrador Retriever

* Yorkshire Terrier

* German Shepherd

* Golden Retriever

* Beagle

Breed types include Hounds, which are bred to hunt and work with humans; Toys,

which are great adult companions; and Terriers, which are excellent dogs for

training.

From cute to tough breeds, toy dogs to working dogs - there are many

different dog breeds for you to choose from.

Bulldog Named Razzle Dazzle Is Among Early Winners at Westminster

Who doesn't love a friendly dog? They're cute, lovable and make for a great companion, unless you have asthma and allergies related to dogs.

If you have a asthma caused by allergies and are considering getting a dog, there's several things you should consider before welcoming the four legged canine into your family.

To start with, you need to know that there's no dog breed that is one hundred percent hypoallergenic. That means that if you have allergies and asthma triggered by pet dander, there's no breed that is going to be completely safe for you to get. That's because all dogs create dander, however there are some breeds that create produce less than others.

Before you take home any dog, take some time to visit a breeder so you can spend time with the dog you're thinking about bringing into your family. By spending time with the dog, you can see if it causes any problems before you actually get the dog. It would be a lot better to spend a short amount of time now with the dog, then to discover six months later that you have to give it away because you can't live with the dog.

If you still want to go through and get a dog, the best breeds have no hair at all or just a single coat. I put together a lot of some of the best dogs for people with allergies and asthma. It is by no means a definitive list. There's some breeds on this list that might cause you specifically problems, and other breeds on this list that won't cause you any allergy problems.

American Hairless Terrier -This breed is actually considered an excellent choice for people with allergy problems. That's because it doesn't have any hair and little to no dander.

Bedlington, Terrier -The Bedlington Terrier is a described as a dog with the heart of a lion, but looks like a lamb. Took a look at their pictures pictures, you'll to agree that it really does look like a sheep.

Bichon Friese - This a white or cream colored breed, known to be friendly and is literally described as a charming puffball.

Chinese Crested - There's two varieties of this breed. One only has hair around it's feet, head and tail. The other has a full coat coat, but both varieties can come from the same litter.

Kerry Blue Terrier - This is another well built, muscular medium sized dog. It's black at birth, but the coat changes color to a dark blue shade to a slate blue or light gray as it becomes an adult.

Maltese - It's hard to miss the Maltese. It has long, white hair that can grow to to nine inches long.

Peruvian Inca Orchid - It's another hairless dog and has a very soft skin.

Poodle - This is often the first breed that people think of when they think of a breed that would be good for asthma. There's toy poodle which is under ten inches at it's shoulder. The miniature poodle which is between 10 and 15 inches tall. The standard poodle is over 15 inches.

Portuguese Water Dog - This breed is hardy and muscular, medium sized dog. It has a single-layered, non-shedding coat that is virtually hypoallergenic.

Schnauzer - The schnauzer is a tiny, square proportioned dog with a long head, bush beard, mustache and eyebrows.

Shih Tzu - The name comes from the Mandarin language for lion dog. It's a small, yet sturdy dog with an ample amount of fur.

Yorkshire Terrier - This dog has very long, fine and silky fur. The puppies are generally black and tan, while the adults are mostly tan.

Here's a few other breeds that you might consider:

Airedale Terrier Bergamsco  Coton de Tulear  Dandie Dinmont Terrier  Havanese  Irish Water Spaniel  Lagotto Romagnolo  Polish Lowland Sheepdog  Portuguese Water Dog  Puli
