Your dog will be wearing their dog collar for a long time. This is because they hold important information such as ID tags. This means that if your dog happens to get lost, when it is found you can be located as the owner and get your dog back. So you do not want the dog collar to be too tight on your dog since it will be wearing it a lot, as this would be uncomfortable for your dog. On the other hand, a dog collar is very important for when you are walking your dog, as you attach your leash to it, so you do not want your dogs collar to be too big, as if it spots a cat it will likely run off after it. You do not want it to slip off!

First of all, it is important to note that there are no one-size-fits-all collars. There are many collars to pick from. There are three things to consider when picking the right size collar for your dog. First of all, you need to consider the width of the collar. You will also need to consider the length. Finally, you will need to consider how tight the collar feels on your dog before making your decision. Below are some tips for each one, to help you make a good decision;

Width

Width is another way of saying how thick a collar is. When deciding how thick a collar should be, you should go with common sense. Consider the size of your dog. You should never get a poodle and one-inch wide collar. Not only would this look ridiculous, but your dog would struggle to hold the weight of it on its neck. Conversely, you will want to give a big dog a thick collar so it is not too flimsy.

Length

This is a very important step. Before you buy a dog collar, make sure you measure your dogs neck. Take this measurement and then add two or three inches on to the measurement. The length you are left with should be the correct target length of whatever collar you buy. Do not worry about not being able to find a collar to fit the length of your dogs neck. There are lots of different sizes of collars out there.

Tightness

When you put your collar on your dog, you should be able to slip two fingers in between the collar and your dogs neck. If you are unable to do this, then you know that the collar is too tight on your dogs neck and should be loosened so it does not restrict your dogs breathing. If you can slip more than two fingers in, then you know that it is too loose.

An unruly dog can be quite a nuisance when going to the park, walking, or even in your own back yard. Neighbors and bystanders can get frustrated by barking and being bothered by your pet. Although running around, barking and playing are all natural behaviors of your dog, everyday activities with them are much easier if they are taught to obey commands and behave in an appropriate manner. Sometimes leash training is not enough and other methods must be used.

A remote trainer is a device many owners are now using as a way to teach their dog appropriate behavior and follow commands. This device allows you to train your dog without a leash. It consists of a collar and a remote control device that delivers a set level of static shock when a command is disobeyed. This shock grabs your dog's attention and teaches them that the discomfort will come when they do not listen to you. The collar has a box with two electrodes. These electrodes must contact the skin in order for it to function properly.

When using one of these devices, take off their regular collar. Have them wear the trainer collar a few times before starting to correct their behaviors so they can become accustomed to it. Training is much like any other dog training. Start with one basic behavior command such as sit or stay and use the correction if they do not follow the command. You may have to show them what the command means a few times before using the correction. Attempt to teach them with a leash for basic understanding before using the remote trainer. If they disobey, correct them with the collar. Give them praise if they follow the command. After one command has been mastered, move on to the next one.

Always start out with the lowest correction level. Increase it as the dog continues to disobey. Continue repeating the command word and giving corrections until the dog obeys. These trainers are not only good for correcting bad behavior, you can also use them to teach your dog tricks and keep them safe. Walking can be a much more pleasant event because you will not have to shout at your dog and can walk them without a leash if desired. This means no more jerking and pulling.

As a dog owner, activities with your dog should be enjoyable for both you and your pet. When your dog does not listen and obey you, this makes each activity stressful and frustrating. All the fun and relaxation is removed and your pet does not get the satisfaction they need while being out. A remote trainer may be just what you need when your dog is not behaving properly and will not listen to you. It will allow you to adjust corrections according to the situation and has been proven to help correct the most disobedient of dogs. Don't spend all your time yelling at your companion and confusing them. Train them to listen to you and understand what is expected of them and everything you do with your best friend will be rewarding and fun.

What is an invisible fence, and when should it be used?

The Instant Fence system was originally designed to be used in RVs. The idea was to give pet owners who already had pets being contained by an wired fence system a portable system to take with them when camping or on vacation. It was never originally intended to be a replacement for the 'underground' (wired) fences. However, because of its 'Plug & Play' functionality, the Instant Fence quickly became a favorite item of pet owners.

Recently the Instant Fence received a significant upgrade. In the past, it only came with a rather large, 1 level receiver collar that was best suited for medium to larger dogs due to its size and strength. PetSafe wisely changed the receiver to an adjustable 6 level collar and reduced its size by 20%. This made this

system much more beneficial, as now pets as small as 8 lbs and as large as 100 lbs or more can be contained by this system.

The Instant Fence and its receiver collar - the PIF-275 are the only PetSafe Invisible Fence items that are not interchangeable with any other PetSafe system. The reason for this is that they work in exactly the opposite way from an 'underground' (wired) system. When activated, the PIF-300 emits a radio signal up to 90 feet in every direction in a perfect circle.

The PIF-275 receiver worn by the pet is always hearing this signal and therefore it does not activate. However once the dog walks out of the zone and the collar loses this signal, that is when the receiver wakes up and begins to correct the pet via stimulation through 2 contact points on the Receiver Collar that touch your pet's neck.

With an underground fence, the only place that the signal exists is around the buried boundary wire. Once the pet walks up to that wire and the receiver hears the signal, it then wakes up and activates.

So with our Instant Fence, the receiver collar needs to always hear the signal; otherwise it activates.

With our 'underground' (wired) systems, the receiver collar never wants to hear the signal; if it does, then it activates.

The two main drawbacks to our Instant Fence are:

1. It has a maximum range of 90 feet in any direction.

2. The boundary shape cannot be adjusted. It can only transmit in a perfect circle in every direction. If you wish to increase the boundary, you may use multiple transmitters and overlap the signal to create a boundary of 180 feet in every direction but keep in mind that the transmitters must be indoors and out of the weather. Overall the Instant Fence is a great product for someone who needs simple installation and is not concerned with its limited adjustability.

All dogs bark at one time or another. I've had a dozen or so dogs during my lifetime and I have heard all of them bark at various times. But for the last fifteen years I've owned small, toy breeds such as Maltese, Yorkshire Terriers, Chihuahuas, and Dachshunds and the barking is unbelievable! I decided to investigate why this occurs.

Dogs bark when they have something to tell us or when something is different in their surroundings and they need to evaluate the situation. Just like infants and toddlers, making noise gets attention from the creatures around you who are able to help. I currently have a male Maltese and a female Yorkshire Terrier at my house. I have taken a survey over the past two weeks and found that they are most likely to bark when:

• they run out of drinking water and need for me to refill it
• they are missing a favorite toy and want me to locate it
• they hear an unusual sound and want me to know about it
• they hear a vehicle that they are not familiar with, or that makes a loud annoying sound, such as the garbage truck or a furniture delivery truck
• they hear an unfamiliar voice
• someone they do not know comes too close to them
• someone they do know tries to leave them

All of these examples are instances where they are uncomfortable with what is happening in their territory. They do not bark when the phone rings, the television or radio is playing, people they know come and go from the house, or when the dishwasher is on. They have become accustomed to these sounds and have no reason to be alarmed. My recommendation to teach you small, toy breed dogs to keep from barking so much is twofold. First, get them used to as many sounds as possible that are likely to be heard in your home on a regular basis, and second, do not subject your dog to sounds or events that you already know will be upsetting or unsettling to them.

Dogs truly are man's best friend. If we treat them with respect and dignity they will give us years of faithful companionship.

A dog can be a very good companion for just about anyone. You really only need to have the time, a good home, and money to care for your pet. Temperament can be anything, but here again; you can have a lot to do with it also. But some dogs do have traits of being very friendly to every body, and some are known for being very protective and not friendly at all.

If you want a dog and do not know what breed to get, first decide what you want in the dog as far as size and traits or concerned. This way you will know what breeds to choose from and what breeds to stay away from. This will give you a good starting point.

Even when looking at mixed breeds, you can tell somewhat kind of mix the dog has in it. This will give you somewhat of an idea of what to expect when the dog grows to full size. With any dog when it is just a puppy, look at the feet to get an idea of how big it will grow. Just compare known purebreds puppies feet size to its body and us this to judge the mixed breeds size.

When it comes to a dog's temperament, you can only go by what the breed has shown to be in the past. Yes if you mistreat any dog you can make it mean. But there are some breeds that are better than others when it comes to getting along with everyone. Small dogs or lap dogs or comforters as they were once called have a very extensive history, encompassing several thousand years. Small breeds were often kept by nobility and given as presents to royal figures. It was also thought that small breeds were good for ones health. The Pekingees, pug and King Charles Cavalier Spaniel are three examples.

Many dog owners have a preference for small dogs over larger breeds, and for many different reasons. However, by virtue of their diminutive size, these dogs are much more affordable to keep, need less exercise in relation to larger breeds in general, and are simple to transport for example.

Many owners of larger dogs, and often those thinking of caring for a new dogs avoid smaller breeds, because of the perceived differences in their behaviour, in relation to larger dogs. It is thought, and wrongly of course, that smaller dogs are by nature, yappy, aggressive, possessive, over protective and demanding,, and so on.

If this assumption is not true, then why do so many small dog owners experience problems with their dogs behaving aggressively towards other dogs and humans and displaying possessive and demanding behaviours etc?

To get an understanding of the problem, we need to begin at the beginning. All puppies are cute and adorable, even the largest breed was small and cuddly at one time. However, the small breeds tend to retain their puppy looks and size, long after the cute Rottweiler puppy has grown and gained 50 Kg in weight, for instance

Researchers have found that humans have developed a biological response to 'cute' things, especially baby animals. It is thought the need to nurture and protect, perceived defenceless creatures is automatic.

This is where problems often begin; the owner over protects the dog, may carry him round, let him sleep on the bed or jump on the furniture when he chooses, and picks him up in the presence strange dogs, and gives in to his demands for attention. This is often done through the misguided notion that the dog needs protecting, by virtue of his size and 'baby like' qualities.

So how is this all worked out in the dogs mind? Although our domestic dogs are very different in many ways to his ancestor, the wolf, he has inherited much of his ancestors instinctual behaviours. A part of this instinctual blue print,comes the desire to be part of a group or pack. Although most dogs are more than happy to be the follower in their human pack, if their is no obvious leader, or the dog is getting signals from his owner that he is the leader of the pack, then the dog will have no option but to fill the role, as this is how life is played out in the dogs world.

Over time, the dog may show behaviours that to the experienced eye would be considered dominant, however, to the dogs owner these behaviours are seen as either breed specific, for example, 'that's how Chihuahuas's are', or part and parcel of the dogs personality, eg 'he's always been this way'. This kind of behaviour would be a cause for concern if seen in a larger dog, but somehow overlooked, or not considered serious in many smaller breeds.

There are a number of behaviours that are common to small dogs acting dominantly, so much so, that this type of behaviour observed in smaller breeds, has inherited the label 'small dog syndrome' or 'little dog syndrome'. Some of the common behaviours that characterise 'small dog syndrome' are listed below.

• Your dog has developed the habit of sitting on you, or jumping on you, or next to you, when he pleases.
• Your dog does not allow you near him when he is eating or has a toy he is playing with
• Your barks excessively to get your attention.
• Your dog is over protective when other dogs or humans come near you.
• Your dog growls when you attempt to move him from his favourite resting place.
• Your dog is generally stubborn and refuses to follow commands given to him.
• Your dog displays an exaggerated reaction to being left alone, characterised by constant barking, or destructive behaviour.

Much can be done to turn this problem around, however, owners must first consider the role they play in encouraging this type of behaviour in their dogs. Owners must come to realise that their small breed dogs are in fact animals and not little humans.

Secondly, owners must understand that it is natural for dogs to be a part of a 'pack' and more importantly, a pack in which they would much prefer to be a follower, than a leader. Understanding these two concepts alone, will help greatlyreduce the problem.

In terms of retraining, owners must communicate to their dogs that they are the leader, provider, and protector of the team. This can be done by controlling all of the dogs resources, for example, food, toys, treats, walks, and favourite places of rest, and allowing the dog access to them when the owner decides.

All demanding behaviour, for example barking for treats or to be picked up and so on, should be ignored, and all appropriate behaviour praised.

Aggressive and possessive behaviour towards other humans by the dog can be dealt with by having a place for the dog to go to when the owner is interacting with others. This may be to his crate, or a cushion in the corner of the room for example.

Owners should be aware that retraining takes time, especially in the case of dogs who have been allowed to display this kind of behaviour for a long time. With patience and repetition however, the dog will be content to become a follower, rather than the leader, of his human pack.

The pinch or prong training collaris perhaps the most misunderstood dog training tool on the market. In this review I will touch on two different aspects of the pinch collar:

1- Its benefits in training
2- My review of the best pinch or prong collar on the market.

Why the pinch collar is actually one of the most humane dog training tools on the market-

Whenever I state something like this I am invariably met with incredulity and often times hatred. I stand by my statement, though. The pinch collar is one of the most humane dog training tools on the market. Admittedly, it looks like a torture device. So how can it be a humane tool?

The answer lies in proper dog training methods. Whenever you are training a dog your efforts will only be as successful as your ability to form positive associations with desired and acceptable behavior AND negative associations with behaviors you wish to get rid of. In order to form positive associations with 'good' behaviors that requires motivational training methods such as praise, toys, and treats. In order to form negative associations with 'bad' behaviors that requires corrections such as leash corrections, e-collar corrections, spray bottles, or the withholding of treats or praise.

Therein lies the reason why the prong collar is a very humane tool. When it is appropriate to give a leash correction the pinch collar allows you to use the least amount of force yet get the greatest level of control. Its design leverages any tug you give on the leash so that you are able to give a very light correction and yet have it be meaningful and capable of teaching and training your dog. Anytime that I can reduce the amount of force I use with my dog, I'm all for it.

The Herm Sprenger pinch collar is the ONLY prong collar you should use-

As with many dog training products there is one brand of pinch collar that stands for timeless quality. With living in an apartment, picking the right dog can be difficult-especially coming from a person who isn't partial to small dogs. After doing some research, I was surprised to find that there are numerous large-breed dogs that are well-suited for apartment living.

1. Mastiff - Mastiffs are huge so when my boyfriend told me they are actually perfect for apartments, I called him crazy. Come to find out, they really are! Because of their massive size, they tend to be lazy. Being calm-mannered dogs, they aren't yappers either. His parents have two mastiffs and I have only heard them bark when they feel there is danger. Also, they don't require a ton of exercise so a large backyard or constant walks are not necessary.

2. Greyhound - My cousin has a greyhound and it is, by far, the sweetest dog I have ever encountered. Though she is a large, lean dog, she sees herself as a lapdog, always trying to snuggle on the couch. Greyhounds are good apartment dogs because they are so mellow and sweet. They require a bit more exercise than a mastiff would but still not so that it would cut into your daily routine.

3. Great Dane - I would only recommend a Great Dane for someone that can make a commitment to daily jogs. Though Great Danes are mild mannered dogs that do not bark a lot and tend to be lazy around the house, they do need to get out a lot more than the other dogs listed.

The Beagle, also commonly known as the English Beagle, is a British breed. They are a very vocal dog that requires a lot of attention to stay happy. They grow to be about 16 inches tall and they usually weigh between 18 and 30 pounds when fully grown. They have a short, dense, and waterproof fut coat that comes in a variety of colors and patterns. Some of the coat colors commonly found in Beagle coats include: blue mottle, red, black, white, tan, and yellow.

Beagles are very affectionate dogs that have the perfect personality for family life. They tend to get along great with kids. If properly socialized they can also get along with other family pets. However, because they have been bred as a hunting dog they may not be the best bedfellows for small pets such as rabbits and cats.

Care and grooming

The Beagle is a low maintenance breed. Their coats need minimal brushing and bathing. However, their floppy ears make them prone to ear infections. You will need to clean them out regularly to prevent chronic problems from occurring . You will also need to trim their nails regularly. This breed needs obedience training especially to control their vocalizations and to improve their obedience. They are very intelligent dogs and tend to be good at problem solving and are known for their ability to escape enclosures. Because of this and their tendency to bark and howl, they are not a breed that should be left alone a lot.

Who said aggressive dog behavior is only found in big dogs? Little dogs are sometimes a lot more aggressive because they can get away with it. I have two little dogs, two dachshunds, and one of them, I hate to say, used to embarrass me a lot.  

I love my dogs dearly, no less because she was aggressive and crazy, but it scared me that she could get hurt or hurt another dog. She mainly didn't like other dogs too much and would growl and want to fight with them when they came close. It made me nervous and I was always having to pull her leash really tight so she could not get the other dogs, even in passing them on the sidewalk.

Not only that, but she would pick on a lot bigger dogs too.  I knew if I didn't put an end to her aggressive dog behavior she was going to get me and her in trouble.  

One day while we were at the park playing fetch another dog suddenly came up to her. I knew this could be trouble, because she was very possessive of her ball and would not share it or let another dog near it. But I had no time to get close before she started attacking the other dog. 

Well by the time I got to her and was able to separate them she was hurt, and bleeding all over. Even though she started the fight and it was her fault, it broke my heart. I know I never want to see that kind of scene again. 

So I decided I had to put an end to her aggressive dog behavior right then and there. I had to find a way to train her. I did not want to pay a dog trainer. That was out of the question.

I started trying to do the things that I thought would work, like give her commands and reward her with treats. But I needed more help, as this was only working when I had the treats, and not all the time. I needed a much deeper understanding of how to train a dog. I needed some insider information from professionals.

So I finally found a system that really worked and helped me understand what I needed to do so I could help myself and then help her with her aggressive dog behavior.  She is really so much better. I wouldn't say she is a submissive dog, but a far cry from where she was. She still pulls on the leash some, but not as much. And, she doesn't try to fight other dogs anymore, which was my main concern. 

I heartily recommend the #1 system for stopping aggressive dog behavior.
