The Boxer dog is a German developed breed and is part of the Molosser group. It was derived from two or more Mastiff type dogs, the now extinct Bullenbeisser and the English bulldog. These ancestors of the Boxer had been used to hunt boar, bear and deer for centuries as well as for bull baiting when it became a sport. The boxer was stabilised and exhibited as a breed in its own right in Munich in 1895 and the first Boxer club was founded a year later.

The breed was introduced across Europe in the late 19th century and to America at the turn of the century. The American kennel club recognised the first boxer champion in 1915 but the breed was not register t o the British kennel club until 1933. This breed is a stocky, medium sized, short haired dog, with a smooth fawn or brindled coat, sometimes with white markings. It has a square muzzle and very strong jaw. It also shows a high level of intelligence and is quick to learn.

The name Â‘BoxerÂ’ is thought by many to have derived form the tendency the breed has to fight standing on its hind legs and boxing with its front paws, but this is unlikely as the breed was German so therefore not likely to be given such an anglicised name. There are many other theories about the origins of the name which linguistic scientists have debated. Perhaps one of the more likely explanations is that the Bullenbeisser breed was also known as the Â‘BoxlÂ’ and Boxer is simply a corruption of that word.

During World War I the Boxer was used by the military and did valuable work as a messenger dog, guard dog, pack carrier and attack dog. But it was not until after the Second World War that the Boxer became popular around the world. They were taken home by returning soldiers and soon became a favorite companion, guard dog and show dog. By 2002 the Boxer was the seventh most popular breed in the USA with around 35,000 new registrations a year.

While Boxers are typically fawn in colour with a white underbelly and feet, around a quarter of Boxers are born completely white. This variety has a higher risk of sunburn and skin cancers than coloured Boxers. The gene which is responsible for producing white Boxers is also linked to deafness and around 20% of this variety is deaf in both ears. In the past breeders often euthanized white Boxers at birth and today many are put in pet homes. White Boxers are also disqualified from conformation showing and prohibited from breeding by all national Boxer clubs.

Boxers are energetic and playful and good with families and children. They need to be trained early as they have strong personalities which can be harder to train when older. They have a slight reputation of being difficult to manage which is a result of poor obedience training at a young age. Their intelligence and working breed characteristics mean than they respond well to positive reinforcement techniques such as clicker training. Boxers do have a long adolescence and are not fully mature until two to three years old which is why they need early training to keep their high energy from wearing out the owner. While the breed is not aggressive or vicious they can be over-protecting, territorial and dominating which can lead to a problem with destructive behavior especially in male dogs. They need socialisation, companionship and exercise to counteract these traits.

Boxers are prone to develop various illnesses including cancers, heart conditions and intestinal problems. Responsible breeders screen their breeding stock in an attempt to minimise the occurrence of these diseases in future generations. Proper exercise and conditioning is important for continued health but young dogs should not be over exercised as this may damage bones. Once fully grown Boxers are excellent running companions although they do not do well in high heat or humidity so care should be taken in these conditions.

You may already know that there's a big difference between a "designer dog" and a "mutt." While both are mixed-breeds, the designer dog (sometimes called a hybrid) is a deliberate combining of the traits of two different purebred breeds. Mutts and their heritage? Who knows?

When you opt for a designer dog, you can expect that the parents have been carefully investigated and chosen so that their traits complement each other. When you opt for a Goldendoodle, you're getting a deliberate cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. And if you buy a Goldendoodle puppy from a reputable breeder, you're getting the result of a very careful and considered mix, where both parents are healthy, purebred, and lacking any known problems.

Goldendoodles are a very popular hybrid dog. Poodles and Golden Retrievers are both very popular breeds; they use their high native intelligence in a heart-felt desire to please people. And the Goldendoodle puppy generally shares these traits.

Goldendoodles are similar to Cockapoos (a designer dog of Cocker Spaniel and Poodle mix), but are usually much larger. Goldendoodle females are about 40 to 60 pounds; males are around 60 to 70 pounds. These weights represent a cross of a Golden Retriever with a Standard Poodle; Golden Retriever crosses with Miniature Poodles are generally smaller.

One of the goals of breeders of these dogs is a desire to breed dogs that are more hypoallergenic. This is hoped to be one of the results of the Poodle's contribution to the mix. Poodles do not shed as much as most other breeds. When combined with the genes of a Golden Retriever -- a shedder extraordinaire -- the hope is that the puppies will have all the good traits -- an active, friendly, intelligent dog -- with a coat more like the Poodle and with the Poodle's lower level of shedding.

Some breeders will attempt to claim that Goldendoodles are hypoallergenic; the truth is that it depends upon the individual dog. Because of their gentleness and trainability, Goldendoodles have been used as guide dogs and assistance dogs for more than 20 years.

First-generation Goldendoodles -- those bred from a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, rather than from a pair of Goldendoodles -- tend to be more uniform. Some of these puppies will resemble Golden Retrievers; others will resemble Poodles. Temperaments may lean toward the Poodle or toward that of the Golden Retriever parent. Coats may range from black, blond, caramel, chocolate, parti-colored, phantom colored, red, silver, and other Poodle-like colors. Your competent breeder, familiar with Goldendoodles, will have a pretty good idea of how each puppy will develop.

When breeding designer dogs, breeders are, among other things, trying to produce dogs without some of the problems known to the two separate breeds. This is known as "hybrid vigor." The first generation of such breeding can appear to be lacking some of the problems known to exist among the purebred dogs. First generation Goldendoodles may be healthy; then again, they may not.

The difficulty arises when both parents have similar genetic problems. For instance, hip dysplasia is a known problem within the Golden Retriever breed. If the Poodle parent shares this problem then the difference in breeds is of no effect and the puppies will probably inherit a tendency toward similar hip dysplasia difficulties.

For this reason, it is vitally important that your breeder is testing/investigating the health and lineage of the both parents. Do not buy a Goldendoodle -- or any other dog, for that matter -- without discussing the health-and-bloodline issues with the breeder. Because Poodles demonstrate a tendency toward progressive retinal atrophy, this can also be an issue with Goldendoodles.

When a breeder breeds from succeeding generations of Goldendoodles -- rather than breeding directly from a Golden Retriever and a Poodle -- the benefits begin to subside and the puppies will tend to resemble more closely either a Poodle or a Golden Retriever.

Goldendoodles -- in fact, many designer dogs -- are currently very popular. But before you bring one home, do your research concerning potential health problems. Be especially concerned if both breeds share a tendency toward the same problem(s). And familiarize yourself with the contributing breeds, too. That is, if you don't like Poodles or you don't like Golden Retrievers as separate breeds, then there's a good chance you won't like the Goldendoodle, either.

Which dog would be best for me?

I'm trying to find the perfect breed of dog for me and the rest of my family. I keep using the dog breed selector quiz's that I find, and they NEVER give me a dog that matches what I'm looking for. So, here I am to ask the dog owners. I'm looking for a medium sized dog, one that doesn't weigh too much (I guess up to 50/60 pounds), not TOO fluffy (all the dogs I like, Samoyed, Husky, Finnish spitz are all fluffy. But I wish they weren't.), good with kids under 5, very loyal to one but also a great family dog, one that has little barking (One that's not exactly bred to bark), very active and playful (But knows when its time to calm down), and only slightly cautious around strangers. Any dog breeds come to mind? Right now though, I'm considering the samoyed, but its hard to find it in my area not from a breeder. (The money I'm allowed to spend on a dog isn't really enough to buy straight from a breeder)

I have a female labrador retriever and she is about 60 pounds. We picked the smallest dog in the litter, and met her parents (who were not very big for labs). She does shed, but she is not very fluffy. Labs are notoriously loyal and playful. I have had four years of constant entertainment and love with this dog, so I would suggest a lab.

The only thing is, a couple of your requirements are things that you really need to train your dog to do--it won't necessarily come naturally. For example, you can train your puppy not to bark, and when to calm down, but these things are not necessarily inherent in any particular dog breed. If you have children, and you bring a puppy into your home, then the dog will grow up around kids and most likely be good with them.

Dog Training Help

It is that time of year. The Christmas pups are 16 to 24 weeks old. Now what do we do with him? The person on the other end of the phone begs for mercy. The calls are coming in and people are in a panic. With so many "ways" to train, which direction do you turn? TV shows have to sensationalize dog training to keep their ratings and anyone and their brother can call themselves a trainer. Look for someone that shares the same ideals and philosophies you do. Your new dog and family "coach" should have an education in the theory and process of learning and comprehension not just a "certificate" in dog training. They should have years of experience training and handling dogs and not just a person who needs extra money after their day job making pizzas. This is serious business. After all, this is the dog you will be keeping for the next fourteen years. Let us not mess his head up before he is even a year old.

I for one, am tired of hearing about the "pack", being the "leader" getting "control", showing him who is "boss" etc., etc. Yikes! What a bunch of control freaks! Dogs are perpetual toddlers. Show them, teach them, set them up for success, have limitations, boundaries and reasonable expectations and stick to it! Don not change the rules. Have all the members of the household participate in their education, follow a plan and live happily ever after. Sound too simple to be true? Dog training is crazy simple...it is teaching people how to behave that is difficult.

Get help with house training your pup. The process is not difficult but too lengthy to approach here. Patricia McConnell has a great little book, Way to Go, that really explains all the details. Google Patricia McConnell for more info. All of Trisha's books are great! Once you are on the right track with that, be reasonable with the length of time you expect your dog to stay by himself. Dogs by the way are not "pack" animals and there is plenty of scientific evidence to prove this. But, they do live in extended family groups. So that one is easy, they live in families just like us, so they understand our basic social structure. Providing your family is an emotionally healthy unit all should go well. Let us talk about being the "leader". How about being a good "parent"? A good parent is not a bully, does not go around controlling and intimidating and certainly tries to provide a healthy environment. So, set the pups up to be right, do not place them in an area where they will constantly be able to get in to trouble and be yelled at for every step they take.

Provide a "baby" safe area, such as the kitchen for the pup to play with his toys. Everything on the floor is his. Pick up your things. Now is not the time to teach him "No" because you are too lazy to pick up your shoes and socks. Interact with him, play with him, pet him and when you are finished, put him back in his crate or out of doors if he is not completely house trained. If your house has an open floor plan and is too hard to section off for the pup, then the pup should wear a harness and a "drag line". The line can be an inexpensive piece of clothes line or the like. Cut the line about twelve feet in length and tie it to the harness. The pup can now go about the house with you. The line prevents him from getting into trouble. You still should be playing and interacting with him, distracting him away from trouble. Prevention is not the cure, but it will teach him the right way to live in your house while you are teaching him puppy obedience exercises. Make sure he gets enough "doggie play time" and not just walking....slowly next to your side, under control. BORING! UGH! Dogs travel at a much faster pace than we humans do. They naturally want to hustle and move out at a nice trot. We need to save that thought for another article. Play time should be out of doors. Don not rough house in doors if you expect your pup to have "house manners". All the chase games, ball tossing and in general "fly around and be crazy" should be out of doors games. If your pup starts to "boogy butt" in the house, tell him, "Not inside" and take him out and play with him until he is tired. Go back in side and expect him to settle.

Norma Jean Najorka is the owner and founder of The Canine Center, Inc. (Dog Boarding Orlando - blog) Norma has been training, breeding and showing dogs for thirty four years. As a professional handler she has shown dogs in the United States, Porto Rico, Mexico, Canada and Europe. She has accumulated over two hundred seventeen titles in Conformation (Breed), Obedience, Agility, Herding and Tracking. Norma has also participated in Schutzhund, Dog Sledding, Weight Pulling, Carting and Search and Rescue. She has owned and bred multiple breed Champions of Record and multiple Dual Champions (breed and performance) To date, Norma Jean has produced 14 "home bred" Champions. She has shown dogs of all breeds although she has personally owned Shetland Sheepdogs, Rottweilers, Akita, Belgian Tervuran, Australian Cattle Dogs and Border Collies. Norma established her training center near downtown Orlando in 1991 where she conduced multiple classes and seminars encompassing dog training, breeding, grooming and dog behavior.

She has taught courses at local zoos, science centers, schools and universities. She has established educational programs for the 4-H, both local and national, and has helped to develop Handicap Service Dog Training Programs. Her interest is in the behavioral sciences and has a formal education in Psychology. Norma's passion is to always create a better world for our canine companion, through understanding and education. She currently lives with her husband in South Orlando where the Canine Center now offers dog boarding, training, private lessons, seminars, agility events, day care and herding. Question 1: A Timid German Shepherd

I have a dog of breed German shepherd and age 11 months bought from a private breeder when he was only 8 weeks old. He was a well mannered and happy puppy who never got any punishment from any of the family members throughout the period of his stay with us. It is a pity that he has become an introvert. He is afraid of all people other than those in the family and me. Since we are living on a carnation ranch there are a lot of people around the ranch all the time and hence there was no reason for the dog to become shy and scared. I would like know the reason for this sort of behavior by the dog and also the reason for doing this.

Answer 1:

The main reason for this sort of behavior of the dog is lack of proper socialization as a puppy. Living on a carnation ranch and having lots of visitors are not good enough for the puppy's socialization. This requires optimum emotional development for which the puppies have to be petted, talked to and played with, fondled etc. by a large number of people in addition to the members of the family.

It would have been ideal if you had taken your puppy with you on trips to town when it was in the age group of 8 and 16 weeks; it is advisable that the dog is not kept only in the carnation ranch. At the current age of 11 months, the possibility of improving the dog in this aspect is low and the damage appears to be permanent. You could try to take your dog for formal obedience training classes in your area which might help in his confidence building; by doing this there could be a possibility of improving the dog's behavior.

Question 2: What Is The UKC?

I would like to know the following details on UKC.

1. What is UKC?

2. Is it affiliated to AKC?

3. If so, will the dog registered with UKC automatically qualify for registration with the AKC

Answer 2:

The UKC (acronym for United Kennel Club) is the second-largest office for the registering purebred dogs in the USA. Its network of business with breeders and owners has spread to Canada, Mexico, Japan, South Africa etc. For that matter, this has spread throughout the world. This has no affiliation with the AKC (American Kennel Club); it registers dogs which are not recognized by the AKC; also registers dogs which have neither been recognized nor registered.

It is not practicable to give the list of all the breeds recognized and registered by the UKC since the number is very large; however to give you a broad idea this list includes breeds such as Bluetick coonhound, American black and tan coonhound, Plott hound, English shepherd, Collies, Boxers, German Shepherds etc.

Both UKC and AKC have their own standards for the dogs; hence a dog which can be registered under the AKC need not necessarily be recognized by UKC and vice versa.

Many hunters prefer to train their hunting dog themselves; this is for a few reasons. Oftentimes dogs will only respond and obey one person when taking commands; if this person isn't the hunter, there will be plenty of problems in the field. The other reason is that the hunter can have complete control over what his dog learns, and how he learns it. A hunter will genuinely have more trust in a dog if he's played a large part in the training process. While it may seem overwhelming at first, training a dog isn't that difficult; most hunters take great pride and enjoy the process. There are some supplies however that every hunter should use when training his hunting dog.

One of the simplest, yet most effective dog training supplies is the use of the dog treat. This technique is well known and used for good reason; it is quite possibly the most effective way to train a dog. A good way to teach your dog obedience and willpower is to put the treat on his nose and not allow him to eat it until you say so. This is certainly a difficult trick for any dog to accomplish, but with time and patience on the hunter's part, it can be done. The longer the dog is able to leave the treat on his nose the better. When the hunter does tell the dog to get the treat, the dog will learn that when he listens to his owner, good things will happen. It's best when a dog is just starting out to use a lot of treats in training, but as training advances many prefer to alternate the reward of the treat with the reward of affection. When a hunter is out in the field and the dog performs well, the hunter will probably not have a treat for the dog, so the dog needs to learn that his owner's attention is just as important.

Another tool many dog trainers use is the whistle. This can be used in a few different ways, and how you choose to use it will be up to your own preference. Most trainers use the whistle to get the dog's attention; if the dog isn't paying attention, or is far out in the field, blowing one short blow on the whistle is an effective way to turn your dog. The other way in which trainers use the whistle is for punishment. While a short blow won't bother them, a longer, harder blow will. When they do something wrong this can be an effective way to let them know that it's wrong. Some trainers even use the whistle in both ways; either way, your dog is bound to learn the lesson.

One of the most important things to know as a pet owner is dog first aid. Having a few supplies at your house and knowing what to do when your dog is in trouble can save their life.

The first thing that you should have at your house is a first aid kit for your pet. You can make one yourself or buy one from your veterinarian. First, make sure you have your veterinarian's phone number on a card along with the local emergency clinic address and phone number and poison control number. You should also have your pet's rabies certificate on hand as well, just in case you need to show the papers to the emergency clinic. It would also be a good idea to have other medical papers that could be of importance. For example, any allergies that your pet has along with when they last had all of their vaccinations. This information will help to assist the emergency clinic veterinarian if your dog has to go there.

In putting together an emergency first aid kit for your home for your pet, you should buy a couple of items that can help you save your pet. One item to have is a rectal thermometer. If your dog seems to be abnormal, check their temperature. If their temperature is lower than 100 degrees and higher than 103 degrees, your dog needs to go to the veterinarian or the emergency clinic. Also make sure to have a leash and a muzzle. If your dog is in pain and under stress, they might bite you. A pack of square gauze is good to have in case your pet is bleeding. This will help to minimize the bleeding and clean off any wounds. Gloves should be on hand and worn if your pet is bleeding.

Nonstick bandages and bandage tape is important to use besides human band-aids because these will help protect a wound and stop bleeding. Human band-aids can get stuck in your pet's fur and cause more discomfort for them. Band-aids are intended for human use only, not for pets. Milk of magnesia is crucial to your pet's health if they eat something that is poisonous. Milk of magnesia will absorb the poison that is in your dog's stomach; however, consult your veterinarian first before administering this to your pet. Also make sure to have a clean, dry towel for your first aid kit to use to dry your pet, or any other practical purposes. If your pet is unable to move and a stretcher is needed, you can use a doormat, poster board, or anything else that is sturdy and will not collapse.

Always remember, if your pet is ill, do not panic. Make sure to keep your first aid materials in a spot where you can easily locate them. Immediately call your veterinarian or local emergency center to ensure that your pet is not in danger. Your number one priority with your pet is to make sure that they live a long, happy and healthy life.

Chihuahua, as long as there are no small children in the house. These dogs usually have their special people and stick to them like glue. You still need to socialize it with other people and dogs, or it will become fearful and yappy. But, you will always be it's favorite.

The Miniature Schnauzer (pronounced as Miniature SCHNOW-zer) is a compact robust dog. It is naturally small in size, has whiskers, shaggy beard, and arched spiking eyebrows. This squarely proportioned breed also has long mustache that is regularly sheared to play up with its figure. It has a firm sinewy hair coat. Its hair coat colors vary from black, salt and pepper, to white or black and silver coat. Its salt and pepper or gray shade is the outcome of distinctive dark and light clustering of each hair. This dog's tail is typically curtailed and its frontal legs are neatly straight. The miniature schnauzer's head is long with a black nose and egg-shaped, dark eyes. Its v-shaped ears naturally fold frontward or shorten to a point. It usually weighs thirteen to fifteen pounds and stands from twelve to fourteen inches. The Schnauzer's size enables it to adjust to both small urban districts and country boroughs.

Personality

The miniature schnauzer is a fantastic companion and family pet. It is an affectionate dog who likes to be around people including kids. Some can be suspicious and aloof with strangers, yet the majority enjoys being with a group. It is docile, smart, bouncy and a good watch dog. It is likely to bark often, but it's not as irritating as one imagines.

Origin and History

The actual origin of the Miniature Schnauzers is quite unclear, though speculations declare that the German Terrier, Wolfspitz, and black Poodle are the dog breeds that possibly have took part in the first evolution of the Miniature Schnauzer. This breed was nurtured by means of breeding the Standard Schnauzer with several small dogs, probably with Affenpinschers and Poodles. These dogs were largely employed for hunting, droving, pulling farm carts, stock tender, as well as watching kids and herds. They have a somewhat distinctive personality than other terriers.

In 1492, Albrecht Durer crafted a painting called "Madonna with the Many Animals". In this masterpiece, a Schnauzer was portrayed as a domestic buddy. The Miniature Schnauzers became recognized in Germany as "kinder watchers" and was chiefly utilized to look after children and farm animals. Golden Retrievers

Golden Retrievers are mid-size dogs with a medium-length coat. They are known to be highly intelligent and empathetic, and share a close bond with their family. Golden Retrievers enjoy both play and relaxation, and because of their size require a fair amount of exercise. They love to swim and are highly trainable, known to be one of the most adaptable dog breeds in the world; they have been trained to be guide dogs for the blind or deaf, drug detectors, search-and-rescue animals, and hunting dogs. Recently, some have even been trained to detect the minute chemical changes in diabetics and epileptics. Golden Retrievers make excellent pets for families and active adults, although they can be a bit of a handful if they're confined to smaller spaces.

Terriers

While there are many breeds that make up the Terrier group, they all share certain characteristics. Small but bold, Terriers are known for their silky coats, and many breeds are hypoallergenic, which means they make good dogs for people with allergies. And because of their size, they are good for smaller apartments. Though their personality varies from breed to breed, many Terriers are very fond of their owners but wary towards strangers.

Boxer

The Boxer is known for its fondness to its owners, but also for its solitary nature towards strangers and other dogs. Muscular and energetic, they are fond of children, but wary of people they don't know. Because of this, they make great family pets, and are also capable of defending the homestead. Boxers require a fair amount of training, discipline, and exercise, so they require a dedicated owner.

Imagine how you would feel if you knew that all of the work and effort you put into clicker training your dog could be completely undone by being a split second off in your timing. Here are the mistakes to avoid:

You must practice to be able to set off the clicker at the exact moment you want it to. Anyone who has used a clicker knows that it takes awhile to get this down perfectly. You must think of the clicker box like a touchy camera exposure button. You want to capture the desired behavior from your dog the moment it happens. If you "press the button" at the wrong time you will be enforcing the wrong behavior. Everyone has had the experience where a camera took the picture a second after the button was pressed, missing the image you wanted to capture. In the same way that the resulting image is not what you want; the behavior reinforced will not be what you want.
Say you want to teach your dog to sit. Wait until the exact moment your dog's bottom hits the floor. Only click and treat at that moment. The click must go off at that exact instant. You are looking for a full sit, not a half squat or bounce. It will be strange to give the command "sit" and only have your dog do a half booty drop as a result, (unless you are training the dog to be a backup dancer in a rap video). Your dog will soon understand that sitting down means a click and a treat. And he should soon start offering the sit position to continue to get treats.
You must also make sure that your training sessions are short, never longer than 5 minutes. Sessions should be condensed learning where you are giving a treat and rewarding at a rapid pace. Every few seconds during the training session you should be rewarding your dog with a treat. The amount of food you will be giving your dog is going to be high so make sure to factor these treats into your dog's daily calorie count.
