The Boxer dog is a German developed breed and is part of the Molosser group. It was derived from two or more Mastiff type dogs, the now extinct Bullenbeisser and the English bulldog. These ancestors of the Boxer had been used to hunt boar, bear and deer for centuries as well as for bull baiting when it became a sport. The boxer was stabilised and exhibited as a breed in its own right in Munich in 1895 and the first Boxer club was founded a year later.

The breed was introduced across Europe in the late 19th century and to America at the turn of the century. The American kennel club recognised the first boxer champion in 1915 but the breed was not register t o the British kennel club until 1933. This breed is a stocky, medium sized, short haired dog, with a smooth fawn or brindled coat, sometimes with white markings. It has a square muzzle and very strong jaw. It also shows a high level of intelligence and is quick to learn.

The name ‘Boxer’ is thought by many to have derived form the tendency the breed has to fight standing on its hind legs and boxing with its front paws, but this is unlikely as the breed was German so therefore not likely to be given such an anglicised name. There are many other theories about the origins of the name which linguistic scientists have debated. Perhaps one of the more likely explanations is that the Bullenbeisser breed was also known as the ‘Boxl’ and Boxer is simply a corruption of that word.

During World War I the Boxer was used by the military and did valuable work as a messenger dog, guard dog, pack carrier and attack dog. But it was not until after the Second World War that the Boxer became popular around the world. They were taken home by returning soldiers and soon became a favorite companion, guard dog and show dog. By 2002 the Boxer was the seventh most popular breed in the USA with around 35,000 new registrations a year.

While Boxers are typically fawn in colour with a white underbelly and feet, around a quarter of Boxers are born completely white. This variety has a higher risk of sunburn and skin cancers than coloured Boxers. The gene which is responsible for producing white Boxers is also linked to deafness and around 20% of this variety is deaf in both ears. In the past breeders often euthanized white Boxers at birth and today many are put in pet homes. White Boxers are also disqualified from conformation showing and prohibited from breeding by all national Boxer clubs.

Boxers are energetic and playful and good with families and children. They need to be trained early as they have strong personalities which can be harder to train when older. They have a slight reputation of being difficult to manage which is a result of poor obedience training at a young age. Their intelligence and working breed characteristics mean than they respond well to positive reinforcement techniques such as clicker training. Boxers do have a long adolescence and are not fully mature until two to three years old which is why they need early training to keep their high energy from wearing out the owner. While the breed is not aggressive or vicious they can be over-protecting, territorial and dominating which can lead to a problem with destructive behavior especially in male dogs. They need socialisation, companionship and exercise to counteract these traits.

Boxers are prone to develop various illnesses including cancers, heart conditions and intestinal problems. Responsible breeders screen their breeding stock in an attempt to minimise the occurrence of these diseases in future generations. Proper exercise and conditioning is important for continued health but young dogs should not be over exercised as this may damage bones. Once fully grown Boxers are excellent running companions although they do not do well in high heat or humidity so care should be taken in these conditions.

I have a female labrador retriever and she is about 60 pounds. We picked the smallest dog in the litter, and met her parents (who were not very big for labs). She does shed, but she is not very fluffy. Labs are notoriously loyal and playful. I have had four years of constant entertainment and love with this dog, so I would suggest a lab.

The only thing is, a couple of your requirements are things that you really need to train your dog to do--it won't necessarily come naturally. There are some supplies however that every hunter should use when training his hunting dog.

One of the simplest, yet most effective dog training supplies is the use of the dog treat. This technique is well known and used for good reason; it is quite possibly the most effective way to train a dog. A good way to teach your dog obedience and willpower is to put the treat on his nose and not allow him to eat it until you say so. This is certainly a difficult trick for any dog to accomplish, but with time and patience on the hunter's part, it can be done. The longer the dog is able to leave the treat on his nose the better. When the hunter does tell the dog to get the treat, the dog will learn that when he listens to his owner, good things will happen. It's best when a dog is just starting out to use a lot of treats in training, but as training advances many prefer to alternate the reward of the treat with the reward of affection. When a hunter is out in the field and the dog performs well, the hunter will probably not have a treat for the dog, so the dog needs to learn that his owner's attention is just as important.

The other way in which trainers use the whistle is for punishment. While a short blow won't bother them, a longer, harder blow will. You should also have your pet's rabies certificate on hand as well, just in case you need to show the papers to the emergency clinic. It would also be a good idea to have other medical papers that could be of importance. For example, any allergies that your pet has along with when they last had all of their vaccinations. This information will help to assist the emergency clinic veterinarian if your dog has to go there.

In putting together an emergency first aid kit for your home for your pet, you should buy a couple of items that can help you save your pet. One item to have is a rectal thermometer. If your dog seems to be abnormal, check their temperature. If their temperature is lower than 100 degrees and higher than 103 degrees, your dog needs to go to the veterinarian or the emergency clinic. Also make sure to have a leash and a muzzle. If your dog is in pain and under stress, they might bite you. A pack of square gauze is good to have in case your pet is bleeding. This will help to minimize the bleeding and clean off any wounds. Gloves should be on hand and worn if your pet is bleeding.

Nonstick bandages and bandage tape is important to use besides human band-aids because these will help protect a wound and stop bleeding. Human band-aids can get stuck in your pet's fur and cause more discomfort for them. Band-aids are intended for human use only, not for pets. Milk of magnesia is crucial to your pet's health if they eat something that is poisonous. Milk of magnesia will absorb the poison that is in your dog's stomach; however, consult your veterinarian first before administering this to your pet. Also make sure to have a clean, dry towel for your first aid kit to use to dry your pet, or any other practical purposes. If your pet is unable to move and a stretcher is needed, you can use a doormat, poster board, or anything else that is sturdy and will not collapse.

Always remember, if your pet is ill, do not panic. Make sure to keep your first aid materials in a spot where you can easily locate them. Immediately call your veterinarian or local emergency center to ensure that your pet is not in danger. Your number one priority with your pet is to make sure that they live a long, happy and healthy life.

Chihuahua, as long as there are no small children in the house. These dogs usually have their special people and stick to them like glue. You still need to socialize it with other people and dogs, or it will become fearful and yappy. But, you will always be it's favorite.

The Miniature Schnauzer (pronounced as Miniature SCHNOW-zer) is a compact robust dog. It is naturally small in size, has whiskers, shaggy beard, and arched spiking eyebrows. This squarely proportioned breed also has long mustache that is regularly sheared to play up with its figure. It has a firm sinewy hair coat. Its hair coat colors vary from black, salt and pepper, to white or black and silver coat. Its salt and pepper or gray shade is the outcome of distinctive dark and light clustering of each hair. This dog's tail is typically curtailed and its frontal legs are neatly straight. The miniature schnauzer's head is long with a black nose and egg-shaped, dark eyes. Its v-shaped ears naturally fold frontward or shorten to a point. It usually weighs thirteen to fifteen pounds and stands from twelve to fourteen inches. The Schnauzer's size enables it to adjust to both small urban districts and country boroughs.

Personality

The miniature schnauzer is a fantastic companion and family pet. It is an affectionate dog who likes to be around people including kids. Some can be suspicious and aloof with strangers, yet the majority enjoys being with a group. It is docile, smart, bouncy and a good watch dog. It is likely to bark often, but it's not as irritating as one imagines.

Origin and History

The actual origin of the Miniature Schnauzers is quite unclear, though speculations declare that the German Terrier, Wolfspitz, and black Poodle are the dog breeds that possibly have took part in the first evolution of the Miniature Schnauzer. Golden Retrievers

Imagine how you would feel if you knew that all of the work and effort you put into clicker training your dog could be completely undone by being a split second off in your timing. Here are the mistakes to avoid:

• You must practice to be able to set off the clicker at the exact moment you want it to. Anyone who has used a clicker knows that it takes awhile to get this down perfectly. You must think of the clicker box like a touchy camera exposure button. You want to capture the desired behavior from your dog the moment it happens. If you "press the button" at the wrong time you will be enforcing the wrong behavior. Everyone has had the experience where a camera took the picture a second after the button was pressed, missing the image you wanted to capture. In the same way that the resulting image is not what you want; the behavior reinforced will not be what you want.
• Say you want to teach your dog to sit. Wait until the exact moment your dog's bottom hits the floor. Only click and treat at that moment. The click must go off at that exact instant. You are looking for a full sit, not a half squat or bounce. It will be strange to give the command "sit" and only have your dog do a half booty drop as a result, (unless you are training the dog to be a backup dancer in a rap video). Your dog will soon understand that sitting down means a click and a treat. And he should soon start offering the sit position to continue to get treats.
• You must also make sure that your training sessions are short, never longer than 5 minutes. Sessions should be condensed learning where you are giving a treat and rewarding at a rapid pace. Every few seconds during the training session you should be rewarding your dog with a treat. The amount of food you will be giving your dog is going to be high so make sure to factor these treats into your dog's daily calorie count.

As a potential Yorkshire Terrier buyer, one of the first decisions you have is determining if a male or female dog is the best match for you.

There are certain characteristics that most male and female Yorkies will have, and knowing these characteristics will help you make the best choice.

Even if you plan to spay or neuter your Yorkshire Terrier, it is still important to consider the characteristics of male and female dogs, as they will still be present even after the procedure, although the characteristics will not be as pronounced.

Avoid the temptation to just pick the "cutest" puppy or older Yorkie when choosing from Yorkshire Terrier breeders, and try to determine which gender will be the best possible match for you and your family.

Males

One of the most obvious physical characteristics of the male dog is that it is generally larger than females of the same breed, and eats more. Males are heavier, taller and stronger than female dogs, although this may be particularly of concern more in the larger breed dogs. Usually the size difference will only be a few inches in height, but it may be more substantial in weight. Male dogs tend to eat significantly more food than non-pregnant females.

Teacup Yorkies, being so small, tend to eat less but bear in mind Teacup Yorkies are not a recognized breed.

Male Yorkshire Terriers may be more aggressive and independent than female dogs. Again, this is a more important consideration in larger breeds than smaller breeds. Some male Yorkies tend to be more difficult to manage in small, confined areas and often do not socialize well with other males. This will be particularly true if there are female dogs in the area that are in heat.

A male Yorkshire Terrier often will form a closer bond with one person, whereas a female dog tends to bond equally with many people.

Male Yorkshire Terrier puppies to develop quicker sexually than female dogs, and will display sexual tendencies at a younger age. This is a concern if there are other dogs in the house or in the neighborhood that may come into heat. The male dogs will tend to roam, as they can smell female dogs in heat for many miles and if allowed, may even be gone for several days in a row in pursuit of females. Neutering your male Yorkshire Terrier help will minimize this problem.

You may find that the male becomes very possessive of the female - even towards humans. This may be a concern if you have small children in house, or do not have the dogs kenneled. In addition, the male may become aggressive towards the female if she is not receptive to his advances. Any breeding pair of dogs needs to be carefully monitored.

Male Yorkshire Terrier puppies tend to be more difficult to train than female Yorkshire Terrier puppies, and are more independent in nature. They also tend to be friskier and require more exercise. Males may be more difficult to socialize with other animals and other dogs, and need to begin socialization training at a young age.

Females

Female Yorkshire Terriers tend to be smaller than male dogs of the same breed and are often less aggressive. However, a female dog protecting a litter of puppies can be just as aggressive as a male. A female Yorkshire Terrier with her first litter should be carefully monitored for the first few weeks, to see how protective she becomes of the puppies.

Females will come into heat at least twice a year for approximately three weeks. During this time there will be a noticeable discharge of fluid from the female, that is designed to attract the male dog. Spaying the female Yorkshire Terrier will prevent this from occurring. If the female is to be used for breeding purposes, there are products on the market designed to address this problem.

Female Yorkies tend to be less excitable and easier to train. They can, however, become easily cowed or shy if treated harshly, or scolded in a rough or angry tone of voice. Female dogs tend to bond with many people. They may be less protective in general than male dogs, however are also easier to socialize with other animals.

Female dogs will fight with other females, but tend to get along generally well with male dogs. Usually a group of female dogs will establish a hierarchy, and will bond with each other after the initial pecking order is established.

Similarities

With both male and female dogs, it is important to consider the amount of time, attention and effort that will be spent in training the dogs and socializing with them afterwards. Both male and females require the same amount of exercise, training, feeding, general care, and love. In addition, regular veterinary checkups and yearly vaccinations will be required for both genders.

Deciding on a male or female Yorkshire Terrier is largely a personal decision. Unless the dog is being used for breeding purposes, consideration should be given to spaying or neutering the animal as soon as recommended by your veterinarian, to prevent unwanted pregnancies and puppies.

Who doesn't love a friendly dog? They're cute, lovable and make for a great companion, unless you have asthma and allergies related to dogs. 

If you have a asthma caused by allergies and are considering getting a dog, there's several things you should consider before welcoming the four legged canine into your family. 

To start with, you need to know that there's no dog breed that is one hundred percent hypoallergenic. That means that if you have allergies and asthma triggered by pet dander, there's no breed that is going to be completely safe for you to get. That's because all dogs create dander, however there are some breeds that create produce less than others. 

Before you take home any dog, take some time to visit a breeder so you can spend time with the dog you're thinking about bringing into your family. By spending time with the dog, you can see if it causes any problems before you actually get the dog. It would be a lot better to spend a short amount of time now with the dog, then to discover six months later that you have to give it away because you can't live with the dog. 

If you still want to go through and get a dog, the best breeds have no hair at all or just a single coat. I put together a lot of some of the best dogs for people with allergies and asthma. It is by no means a definitive list. There's some breeds on this list that might cause you specifically problems, and other breeds on this list that won't cause you any allergy problems. 

American Hairless Terrier -This breed is actually considered an excellent choice for people with allergy problems. That's because it doesn't have any hair and little to no dander. 

Bedlington, Terrier -The Bedlington Terrier is a described as a dog with the heart of a lion, but looks like a lamb. Took a look at their pictures pictures, you'll to agree that it really does look like a sheep. 

Bichon Friese - This a white or cream colored breed, known to be friendly and is literally described as a charming puffball. 

Chinese Crested - There's two varieties of this breed. One only has hair around it's feet, head and tail. The other has a full coat coat, but both varieties can come from the same litter. 

Kerry Blue Terrier - This is another well built, muscular medium sized dog. It's black at birth, but the coat changes color to a dark blue shade to a slate blue or light gray as it becomes an adult. 

Maltese - It's hard to miss the Maltese. It has long, white hair that can grow to to nine inches long. 

Peruvian Inca Orchid - It's another hairless dog and has a very soft skin. 

Poodle - This is often the first breed that people think of when they think of a breed that would be good for asthma. There's toy poodle which is under ten inches at it's shoulder. The miniature poodle which is between 10 and 15 inches tall. The standard poodle is over 15 inches. 

Portuguese Water Dog - This breed is hardy and muscular, medium sized dog. It has a single-layered, non-shedding coat that is virtually hypoallergenic. 

Schnauzer - The schnauzer is a tiny, square proportioned dog with a long head, bush beard, mustache and eyebrows. 

Shih Tzu - The name comes from the Mandarin language for lion dog. It's a small, yet sturdy dog with an ample amount of fur. 

Yorkshire Terrier - This dog has very long, fine and silky fur. The puppies are generally black and tan, while the adults are mostly tan.

Many breeds of dogs have histories that originated from the sea. However, sorting out what is pure rumor, folklore, or documented fact can be amusing at best! And just because something is folklore does not mean it's not true. Read on and decide for yourself!

Bolognese ~ Folklore: Centuries ago, these highly prized and popular dogs were taken aboard ships sailing in the Mediterranean. They were specifically meant to be presented as gifts to merchants and noblemen, with whom the sea captain wanted to establish trading relationship.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever ~ Folklore: In 1807 an English ship was wrecked off the coast of Maryland. All onboard the ship survived, including two St. John's water dogs (puppies). They were then cross-bred with local retrievers and the Chesapeake Bay Retriever was born.

Chinese Crested ~ Folklore: Chinese ships were sailing the coast of Africa, and picked up these dogs along the way, to keep the rodent population under control.

Coton De Tulear (the possible ancestors of the Bichon Frise) ~ Folklore: Sailing ships going from France to the West Indies, in the 15th Century, carried small white dogs as not only company for women, but to use as ratters. A particular ship (of unknown name) sank off the coast of Madagascar and everyone aboard perished. But the dogs managed to get to shore near the port of Tulear. Hence the name...Coton De Tulear.

Havanese (National dog of Cuba and its only native breed) ~ Folklore: This breed came to Cuba in the early 16th Century aboard the trade ships sailing from the island of Tenerife.

Portuguese Water Dog ~ Fact: Historically these dogs lived aboard boats and worked with fisherman. They acted as couriers between ships, and were taught to herd fish into nets and dive underwater to retrieve nets and gear.

Folklore: There's a claim that half the ships of the Spanish Armada had Portuguese Water Dogs onboard to carry messages from ship to ship. The Kerry Blue, the Irish Water Spaniel and the Poodle also claim that it's possible that they descended from the same ancestry as the Portuguese Water Dog, and all of these breeds have tales of the Spanish Armada in their historic lore.

Newfoundland ~ Fact: This breed lived aboard fishing boats, in Newfoundland, Canada. They hauled nets out to sea and retrieved both people and objects that fell into the waters.

Folklore: In the 15th and 16th Century, European explorers came to North America with Mastiffs, Sheepdogs and Waterdogs. The Newfoundland came about as an interbreeding of these dogs.

Skye Terrier ~ Folklore: A man-of-war ship from the Spanish Armada was wrecked off the coast of Scotland. A dog survived, and then bred with a local terrier - producing an offspring with the typical long silky coat of a Skye.

Teacup Chihuahua ~ Folklore: In the mid to late 1800's, Chihuahua's were considered excellent companions onboard vessels. Their diminutive size allowed them to chase vermin out of small spaces that other dogs could not reach.
