What can i do, White Dog-Gray Collar?

I have an all White Siberian Husky and we have one of those chain collars on him, not one with spikes! In any event, no matter what we do, every time we bath him or even get him professionally, he in a day or two has a gray collar on his fur from the chain... We have tried a harness when he was a young pup, however he found a way to chew it off, we have also tried leather, and all sorts of regular collars, and he just chews them off, this one has worked the best, he just gets that gray ring around his neck on his fur.... Any suggestions?
Only serious ones please.

You should never leave a choke chain (the chain collar) on a dog full-time. Those collars are for training only. He could catch the rings on something and choke himself -- then the grey ring around his neck would be the least of your worries.

The only way he could chew a collar off is if it's too loose. You should only be able to get 2-3 fingers (side by side, not stacked) under the dog's collar when he is wearing it; anything else is too loose.

I've had Siberians for 20 years, and none of them have chewed off a properly fitted collar. Get him a regular nylon or leather collar, fit it properly, and please don't leave a choke chain on him anymore.

As for the currently existing grey ring, find a good whitening shampoo -- talk to a groomer in your area for recommendations.

There are many different kinds of dog collars on the market that are available for you to buy. There are so many, in fact, that it can get a little confusing. What do you want to buy? A pinch collar, an adjustable nylon collar, a regular leather buckle? There are so many choices that it can make your head spin!!

Martingale collars are a special kind of dog collar & are starting to gain popularity with the general population of dog owners. They have other names like; safety collar, greyhound collar, humane choke collar, training collar, hound collar or limited slip collar. How a martingale collar works, is to tighten up around a dogs neck while giving greater control to the handler. This is done by a loop system that tightens around the dogs neck when it puts tension on the leash. It reduces the risk of a dog "backing out" of it's collar and escaping, which is important with dogs like Salukis, Greyhounds and Whippets, since the circumference of their heads is smaller than their necks.

Fitting a martingale collar to your dog is especially important. If the collar is too loose, it will not tighten up as it is supposed to & your dog could escape from it's collar. To measure your dog for a proper fit you must measure the dogs neck right behind the ears. Since most martingale collars come with an adjustable feature, choose a collar that offers a size that comfortably fits between the measurements that you have just taken.

If you want to use a martingale collar for training your dog, it is best to buy a nylon one that has a chain loop. This will give you greater control over your dog & not be as harsh as a regular choke chain collar. If you want to 'show off' your dog, there are many collar makers that make beautiful collars from colourful ribbons & fabrics. The choices are endless & you will make yourself dizzy just trying to pick the right one.

An important note about martingale collars as since they do have a loop, your dog should never be left unattended while wearing one. It could snag on something & hurt your dog.

Remote Dog Training Collars

Gaining psychological advantage is the most important component of creating meaningful change within the context of Nature and the pack relationship. Increasing the level of authoritative thinking and interaction is needed to allow the dominant dog to release the lead role. Often owners express too high of a level of emotion which creates a power vacuum within the relationship and forces the dog to take the dominant role. Expressing a higher level of what the owner wants which is linked to confidence creates the framework towards meaningful change. Certain personality types have an easier time but the goal for all owners is to change how they think in a way which creates meaningful change. Using certain methods or being within a certain environment or situation can impact how an owner thinks in a negative or positive way. Often the dog owner will gain a certain level of psychological advantage within a dog obedience class however seem to lose whatever gains were achieved once they return home. Taking an owner's dog to dog training camp without the owner may not change how a owner thinks and interacts when the dog returns. The dominant dog will release this role to the trainer as power is eliminated, associations are gone. Once returned back to the owner the dog often will regain power over time if the owner fails to change how they think and interact.

Certain devices, such as remote collars, can cause negative issues if they are not associated to the owner within the context of Nature and the pack relationship. If a disconnect exists between a device and the owner via the psychological it can cause issues within the relationship. When you begin to recognize the psychological connection between dogs and humans a device can be seen an merely an extension of self, of how the owner thinks. Some devices, such as remote collars can cause a psychological twister effect for dogs if the physical is disconnected from the psychological. Authority is expressed via the psychological before it manifests itself through the device. Corrective collars such as choke chains usually connect to the psychological where remote collars may not. Physical manipulation of the leash while expressing what you want a dog to do indicates the psychological is following the same authoritative path. With a remote collar this may not be the case. The owner can push a button to create a physical manifestation of authority while maintaining an emotionally high psychological state. The dog feels authority manifested through the physical but not connected via the psychological with the owner. The dog may not link or associate the physical presence of authority with the owner. Real and meaningful change with how the owner is thinking and interacting is not occuring. Within this context an increase of stress will result for the dog. Further the owner may increase the level on the remote collar thus creating the possibility of psychological issues for the dog. To overcome these issues everything must be stripped away and brought back to the psychological path. To understand the power of this connection is to observe how power can shift from a dog rehab context. Owners will express a higher level of emotion towards an injured dog which is interpreted as power. The dog will recover from the physical injury but become damaged psychologically. Owners must learn how to discipline how they think to maintain balance within Nature.

Dogs are more complicated than a device or gadget. They are more than a physical being. They share an unseen connection with us through Nature and the pack relationship. Changing how we think can truely change everything, at least in a dog's world.

Most people have one of two opinions about dog bathing.  Some believe that dogs only need to be washed every year or so.  Others believe that they should bathe their pets once a month.

Bathing is really good for dogs, but it may cause problems if you do it too much.

This is because dogs have natural skin and fur oils, the same way that people do.  If you bathe your dogs too frequently, their skin will become dry and itchy.  This creates a risk of scratching and breaking skin.  Remember that the natural oils really are beneficial, and that they protect your dog from many things.

With care, you can make bathing entertaining for you and your pet.  Just watch for a few things.

1. It's important to provide protection for your dog's ears.  Soap and water, if they get into the ear canal, can cause significant infections.  This is often temporary, but infections can cause real damage, up to and including deafness.  If you think your dog may have an ear infection, look for frequent head shaking and discharge from the ears to be sure.

To make sure that this doesn't occur, all you need to do is use cotton balls to stop your dog's ears.  Never force these into the ear canal - just place them securely at the entrance of the ear, keeping water out.  Once the bath is over, dry the ears to keep moisture out - a finger wrapped in a cloth works well.  If you decide to use a cotton swab, make sure you don't put it too deeply into the ear canal, since it could damage the ear drum.

2. Remember to use a shampoo that's been made for dogs, since they're formulated to protect the fur and skin of your pet.  Soaps made for humans are often harsh or irritating, plus dogs may be allergic to the scents used in them.

3. The frequency with which you bathe your dog will depend on the breed you have.  Dogs with long hair need to be washed more often than breeds that have short hair. That means that if you have a hairy breed, such as a spaniel, you may need to bathe as often as once every two months.  Other breeds could go as long as eight months, but outdoor dogs will probably need more frequent bathing.

Start your dog off the right way when it comes to bathing - patience and compassion are extremely important.  Scaring your dog will make the entire process more difficult.  Dogs enjoy being wet, and may enjoy running into lakes and rivers or having water sprinkled on them.

Set the bath up outside when you can, and encourage your pet to run through it.  Distract your pet from the water with a toy or two, and once your pet calms down, you can start the bath.  Some people use a leash to keep their dog from running off.

When you bathe your pet, get the shampoo, towel, soap and other tools together early, and avoid using the hose.  Water from the garden hose is usually too cold.  Use a bowl with water from the bath instead - it'll be warmer.

If you teach your dog that bathing is to be enjoyed, you and your pet will enjoy the next session.

There was a time that when dog people spoke of a "training collar," they were referring to a choke chain. Fortunately, in this insane world, sanity has prevailed, and dog trainers and in-the-know dog people no longer use choke chains as training collars. There is a good reason for this return to sanity. Choke chains are dangerous. Choke chains can cause very serious injury and even death to a dog. Don't buy or use a choke chain as a training collar for your dog!

My personal preference for a training collar is just a simple flat buckle collar. When you put the collar on the dog, you should be able to insert two fingers between the collar and the dog's neck. If you make the collar any looser, the dog will be able to slip it over his head; and if you make the collar any tighter, it will be uncomfortable to the dog. It is important to remember that puppies grow. When you put a collar on a puppy, be certain that you check the collar at least once a week to be sure that it hasn't gotten too tight on the dog's neck.

The width of the collar should be determined by the size of the dog. A heavy collar that is wide and thick isn't really appropriate for, say, a toy poodle. On the other hand, a dainty little narrow jewel encrusted collar would look pretty ridiculous on a German shepherd. Remember that you need to affix the dog's vaccination tag and his identification tag to the collar.

The leash that you use for your dog doesn't need to be fancy or expensive. Some owners prefer to use a retractable leash and that's fine. Retractable leashes actually give owners more control of their dogs. You can just "reel" him in, so to speak, if there is another dog or if you see your dog in a dangerous situation. Retractable leashes are more expensive than just regular leashes, of course, and you should only buy the type that have a one-button braking system.

For training:
Well-fitted choke chain or prong collar, depending on the need. Used for control and correction. I'm very well aware of how these collars need to fit for maximum impact with minimal correction.
Also, a 4-ft. leather lead.

For dog shows:
Diamond-link ("snake") or jeweler's link choke chain, various widths. I use these for control, a bit "dressier" than your average choke chain and not as easy to see against the dog's coat. Like a regular choke, should fit high and snug on the dog's neck.

Retractable or nylon dog leash? And gentle leader, flat collar or choke chain. Which 2 go together best?

I have a lab, and need to know which ones are best, 1 from each group: choke chain, flat collar or gentle leader and: retractable leash or normal leash? He is like 70 lbs and I am like 59 lbs so he has control over me aka not the other way around.
I go to dog classes, he only pulls when we are at home and sees a deer in our 5 acer yard and jerks, so there is NO time for me to stop him. And the retractable leash is 16 ft and is xxlarg and for dogs up to 110 lbs.

I assume you are asking this because your dog is pulling you down the street. I am writing this for the use of a choke collar (and pinch collars) as training aids to help you teach your dog how to walk. At 59 lbs, I don't expect you are very old and would recommend that you talk to a trainer (or take a class). This would be a lot more effective than even using any of these collar and leash combinations - if your dog is well trained, the leash and collar make no difference.

I think choke chains (and even pinch collars) are great training tools, but you should learn how to use them before your first walk. Both are training tools, they aren't supposed to be used indefinitely for walks.

I started out using a choke collar for my 8 month old lab and have since switched to a pinch collar because she just pulled until she was weezing, choking, and still heaving against the chain. With the pinch collar, she walks on a loose leash. If she tugs or pulls, I do a quick tug to tighten the collar (and administer the pinch). She has learned really quick.

I switch up what collar I use - her regular collar, the choke collar, and the pinch collar. I also let her off the leash but leave whatever collar on (pinch or choke) while she runs around free during our walks or at the park. This teaches her that it's not the collar that causes the discomfort, it's her pulling on the leash. I also administer the tug even when she has just her regular collar on.

Another trick I learned when she begins to pull (especially just with her regular collar) is that I stop. I don't move forward, I don't acknowledge her pulling, I don't talk to her, nothing. I just stand there until she refocuses on me. Then I wait until she loosens the leash on her own. I then make her sit. After she sits, I say okay and then we start walking again. I do this every time she pulls - you'd be surprised how quickly they pick up that they need to have a loose leash before we walk. It can make for a long walk - but you'll be a lot happier on future walks.

I let my dog off her leash in safe areas (at the lake or park) and let her run around and chase ducks and geese and squirrels. I also let her swim and chase her retriever toy BEFORE we go on our standard walk - this seems to tired her out and then she is more mellow on our leash walks.

As far as a leash goes, I prefer the nylon (6 ft) leash. My dog walk buddy has a retractable leash and absolutely loves it, but I just don't feel like I have as much control of my dog when she's on a retractable leash.
