There are many different kinds of dog collars on the market that are available for you to buy. There are so many, in fact, that it can get a little confusing. What do you want to buy? A pinch collar, an adjustable nylon collar, a regular leather buckle? There are so many choices that it can make your head spin!!

Martingale collars are a special kind of dog collar & are starting to gain popularity with the general population of dog owners. They have other names like; safety collar, greyhound collar, humane choke collar, training collar, hound collar or limited slip collar. How a martingale collar works, is to tighten up around a dogs neck while giving greater control to the handler. This is done by a loop system that tightens around the dogs neck when it puts tension on the leash. It reduces the risk of a dog "backing out" of it's collar and escaping, which is important with dogs like Salukis, Greyhounds and Whippets, since the circumference of their heads is smaller than their necks.

Fitting a martingale collar to your dog is especially important. If the collar is too loose, it will not tighten up as it is supposed to & your dog could escape from it's collar. To measure your dog for a proper fit you must measure the dogs neck right behind the ears. Since most martingale collars come with an adjustable feature, choose a collar that offers a size that comfortably fits between the measurements that you have just taken.

If you want to use a martingale collar for training your dog, it is best to buy a nylon one that has a chain loop. This will give you greater control over your dog & not be as harsh as a regular choke chain collar. If you want to 'show off' your dog, there are many collar makers that make beautiful collars from colourful ribbons & fabrics. The choices are endless & you will make yourself dizzy just trying to pick the right one.

An important note about martingale collars as since they do have a loop, your dog should never be left unattended while wearing one. It could snag on something & hurt your dog.

Keeping your dog safe is a concern for every pet owner. There are many ways to protect your pet including fencing in your yard, gating off areas where they could get hurt, and giving them the proper care and nutrition. One of the simplest ways to keep them safe is a collar and pet tags. Collars help with pet identification, exercise, and can be used for training purposes. The three main purposes of a collar are for control, identification, and fashion. Most have a place for the identification and vaccination tags to be attached as well as a place for a leash. A basic nylon collar can be used for a house dog that just needs identification tags to help find their home if they get loose. Larger breeds may need a stronger collar. Dogs that spend a lot of their time outdoors may need collars that allow them to get free if they get hung up on an item. Training collars might be an option if you will be training your dog.

A regular dog collar can be made with leather, nylon, or cotton. They are available in many sizes and colors. Clasps vary as well. Boston terrier training should start with the idea that you are the leader of your Boston's pack. Like all dogs, Boston terriers are pack animals. If you are not acting like the pack leader, your Boston will step into the vacuum and take over that position. Training is essential when you get your puppy from a Boston terrier breeder. You may also need to do some training for an older dog you get by going through Boston terrier adoption.

One important consideration is what kind of leash to use in Boston terrier training. The "choke" collar is not a good idea. A Boston terrier has a delicate trachea, or windpipe, and the choke collar can injure it. Prong collars are not advisable since the pinch relies on pinching the dog when you pull at the collar. It's better to use halters on Boston terriers.

If you decide to do the Boston terrier training yourself, you may want to get a book or video on dog training. Some outstanding training books have been written by Cesar Milan, the Dog Whisperer, whose methods are featured on a National Geographic television show.

Another approach is to give your Boston terrier training at a class with other dogs. It's great fun to learn training methods with other dog owners. In a class, your Boston gets experience socializing with other people and dogs. If you have children, be sure to bring them with you. Children are greatly amused by the concept of school for dogs. At class, your children will learn the training methods along with you and your Boston. That will help to make your Boston terrier training efforts consistent among all the family members.

Some people like to have professional trainers train their dogs. That's fine if you have the money, but Boston terrier training is easy enough that shouldn't really need a professional. If you decide to use a professional trainer, be sure to practice commands with your Boston so he or she knows you are the alpha dog.

One thing to be aware of with Bostons is that they are very smart and will get bored with too much repetition. Your Boston may do very well with a command at first and then play around instead of obeying. That's a sign that he's bored and you should practice more later. Some common dog training collars are: the prong collar, the Halti, the Gentle Leader, the choke collar and the electronic collar.

Prong Collar

This collar is made up of metal prongs that have been linked together. When you apply a pulling pressure to the collar (via the leash), it gives the dog a little pinch that is meant to duplicate the effect of a mother dog's teeth when she grabs here pup by the scruff of the neck.

The prong collar is a safe and effective training tool as long as the fit is correct and the collar is used appropriately. The prong collar should not be used if your dog is one to consistently yank at his leash.

The prong collar should fit snugly against the dog's neck. A properly fitted collar should leave approximately ½ of a finger space in between your dog's neck and the prong tip. A collar that is any looser than that won't do its job and will needlessly chafe the dog's skin.

Halti and Gentle Leader

Both the Halti and Gentle Leader head halter devices look a lot like the harnesses that are used to control horses. While the prong collar is designed to condition behavior and movement, the head halter is designed to restrict or restrain your dog's movements. The thought behind the halter's design is that if you can control the head, the body will follow its movement.

When you pull on the attached leash the device closes the dog's mouth and restrains his head. These types of collars are great for dogs that lunge, bite or display other aggressive behaviors.

There are drawbacks, however, to using a head halter device. Most dogs will not take very easily to any device that positions a strap over its nose. You may have to struggle with your dog many, many times before he will submit to wearing it.

Another drawback is that pulling at your dog's head makes it a lot more likely that you'll inadvertently injure the dog's neck or back. To avoid injury, you should always make sure you're restraining your dog in the correct manner.

Choke Collar

The choke collar is one of those dog training devices that is often surrounded by controversy. Proponents of the choke collar point to its humane effectiveness, while critics say that the collar is more torture device than training tool. The truth is that what the collar becomes is largely dependent upon who is using it.

A properly fitted choke collar works by tightening around the dog's throat when the trainer pulls on the leash and then releasing pressure when the trainer does. If the collar is not put on correctly, however, the pressure will remain and the dog could truly choke to death. These collars are not meant for dogs that consistently pull at their leash or for inexperienced trainers. As is the case with head halters, the choke collar has the potential to cause injury to the dog's neck.

Electronic Collar

Just mention the option of an electronic dog collar and many dog owners (even some people with no pets at all) will look at you as if you have suggested training your dog with a stun gun.

The reality is that electronic collars can be a very humane way to train a dog. As with any other training device, however, whether or not it is used for purposes of cruelty is totally dependent upon the intentions and experience of the trainer.

The electronic collar works by allowing the trainer to give the dog small, electric shocks (via remote control) in order to modify its behavior. The intensity of the shock is left to the trainer. In general, the setting should be strong enough to make the dog's ears twitch. If the dog howls or yelps when the shock is delivered, then the setting is too high. Again, the electronic collar should only be used by experienced trainers.

So you do not want the dog collar to be too tight on your dog since it will be wearing it a lot, as this would be uncomfortable for your dog. On the other hand, a dog collar is very important for when you are walking your dog, as you attach your leash to it, so you do not want your dogs collar to be too big, as if it spots a cat it will likely run off after it. You do not want it to slip off!

First of all, it is important to note that there are no one-size-fits-all collars. There are many collars to pick from. There are three things to consider when picking the right size collar for your dog. First of all, you need to consider the width of the collar. You will also need to consider the length. Finally, you will need to consider how tight the collar feels on your dog before making your decision. Below are some tips for each one, to help you make a good decision;

Width

Width is another way of saying how thick a collar is. When deciding how thick a collar should be, you should go with common sense. Consider the size of your dog. You should never get a poodle and one-inch wide collar. Not only would this look ridiculous, but your dog would struggle to hold the weight of it on its neck. Conversely, you will want to give a big dog a thick collar so it is not too flimsy.

Length

If you are unable to do this, then you know that the collar is too tight on your dogs neck and should be loosened so it does not restrict your dogs breathing. If you can slip more than two fingers in, then you know that it is too loose.

Dog training courses can mean the difference between having a happy dog and happy life - or not. Dogs are happier, healthier and safer when they have loving boundaries set for them and that's what dog training courses help you learn to set for your dog.

First let's take a look at the overall methods that dog training courses use. If you find a method that suits you best, you will know the type of course that will best for you and your dog.

Types of Dog Training Courses

Reward Training: Emphasizes positive reinforcement -- instead of punishing or yelling at your dog for what you don't want him to do, you reward your dog for doing what you want him to do. Rewards consist of praise and petting as well as treats. Treats are especially used in the early learning stages of a new behavior.

Dog Whispering: Dog Whispering is more of a general philosophy than a method. This is a more advanced method that should taken on by dog lovers who feel very confident in their connection with their dogs and are interested in learning about canine behaviors, motivation and body language.

Choke or Check Collar Training: Choke collars are collars that slip over a dogs head onto it neck and tighten down on the dogs neck when it pulls too hard on its leash. Choke collars were designed for professional trainers and for limited use - there is a health risk to your dog's neck and trachea when using them. In general, dog training courses that emphasize choke or check collar training are not recommended.

Prong Collar Training: Don't even think about this method. A prong collar has metal ends that stick into a dog's flesh and digs into its neck when it pulls on its leash. Inhumane period!

Head Collar Training: Very humane collar that gently redirects a dog's attention or the way you want him to go instead of punishing or hurting him as the two methods directly above do. Very effective especially when used with Reward Training.

Clicker Training: This method takes a hand-held clicker which, oddly enough, makes a "clicking" noise when squeezed. During clicker training, a dog is reinforced in behaviors with doggie treats paired with the clicking noise. At some point, the treats will be eliminated and the dog will know it has done something right simply by hearing the clicking noise. Very effective.

Electric Collar Training: As the name implies, this type of training involves your dog wearing a collar in which you are able to administer an electric shock to discourage certain behaviors. this method should only be used by professional trainers in the most extreme circumstances.

Ultrasonic Whistle Training: You know of the dog whistles that you can't hear but a dog can - right? This method uses these whistles to get your dog's attention as well as to train him. You will need to be trained in this method first.

If the hearing of a dog is amazing then you can only describe the ability to use the sense of smell as incredible. Dogs can be taught to find people buried many feet under snow or collapsed buildings. They can detect gas leaks, sniff out drugs or explosives and can even sense when a cow is in season!

When a dog is on the scent his nose is very moist and the molecules forming the scent are dissolved into this mucus and transferred by the nerve receptors to the brain. How many time more powerful than our smell is often asked. Some professionals believe it could be as much as 10 million times better than our sense of smell.

Some people then ask, how can a dog get lost, it should always be possible for it to find the way home? The answer can be find if you compare the life of the wolf in the open countryside and the built up environment most dogs live in. The number of different smells being piled one on top of another in an urban environment makes it much more difficult to follow familiar scents. In the open countryside there are plenty of different smells but not the confusion caused by humans.

Dogs sense of smell can be affected by a number of different things such as illness; distemper, hepatitis, diabetes; by infections or obstructions in the nose and by ageing.

How can the sense of smell cause problems for us and our dog?

• Dogs are attracted to smells we find obnoxious. My Golden Retriever loves to roll in any foul smelling substances she can find... and comes back looking as pleased as punch!
• Smelling food on the table or in the kitchen might prove too tempting for your dog to resist. A compliment to the cook I would suggest.
• Talking about the kitchen, rubbish bins often located there are sources of great smells for dogs to go and investigate. This can not always be sensible as some foods and objects in the rubbish might be dangerous for the dog.
• Poison left around for rats and slugs might be very interesting but dangerous for the dog.

How can we use the sense of smell to improve our training
?

1. The use of food and the dog's ability to smell and find it.
2. Use strong smelling treats in training.
3. Treats kept in pocket and then your hand going into the pocket will keep your dogs attention.

Most owners now about treats being used as a training aid. The finding of ways to use treats to encourage the behaviours we want is what we need to consider.

If you own a dog then you know how difficult your furry friend can be at times. However, with the proper training and a whole lot of patience, your dog can start behaving the way you want him to.

Before you start training your dog, there are several common mistakes that many people make when they begin training. I will be going over the top 3 most common mistakes, so pay attention!

1. Don't make it a habit of always "punishing" your dog when you call him. What I'm talking about is doing something to him that he doesn't enjoy. For example, it's not a good idea to call your dog and then clip his nails. Don't make it a habit of calling your dog and then tying him up. Make sure you occasionally call your dog just to talk to him in a cheerful voice, pet him, and tell him what a good dog he is. You don't want him to always associate bad things when you call for him, or he won't want to continue coming when you call!

2. Don't simply ignore your dog's bad behavior because you think he will eventually grow out of it, because he won't. Instead, make it a point to teach what is, and what is not, appropriate behavior.

3. Don't ever hit your dog or cause him physical pain as method of training. This will only make your dog aggressive, or at the very least, a submissive wetter. It's always more effective to reward your dog for good behavior instead of punishing him. After all, your dog's goal is to please you!

When training a gundog there are some basic tools which should be a part of the trainers repertoire. First and foremost a good leash is indispensable. The ideal all around leash needs to be at least six feet long and made of leather. The snap on the end needs to be brass or other metal. If you have a pup that is a chewer, the leash can be of nylon braid at first, but in the end you will want to have a leather leash for durability over the years and for the flexibility it gives to the training process, allowing for just enough "give and take" that the signals you give to the dog can travel easily through the leather.

The collar should always be worn by the dog when outdoors for identification purposes. This should be a good leather buckle collar on which he can wear his tags and which will not slip off should he become lost. There are three basic collar types. The heavy coated dogs do well with the rolled leather collar which will not tangle amongst the long hairs on the neck. The short coated breeds need a flat collar about an inch wide, this type of collar will not slip off as easily as a narrow collar. And lastly the training collar, which is either a choke collar or a pronged collar, is the collar that should be used only during the training of the dog. Added to that of course are several different varieties of electronic training collars which serve several different purposes. But for basic training the collars mentioned previously are most necessary.

The whistle is another necessity. The ordinary police type whistle is the most preferred. Silent whistles are not to be used, regardless. A gundog trainer uses a variety of different whistles and trills and if he is using a silent whistle he can not determine what he is conveying to the dog, since he cant hear the whistle himself! Of course, a trainer who can whistle on his own talent does not need to have an extra man made whistle, but since one can not always guarantee that his own ability will work, it is best to train from the beginning with a man made whistle.

The gundog can not be successfully trained without a blank cartridge gun. The most common type is the .22 caliber. The gun is used to accustom the dog to the noise of the gun associated with hunting. It should be a revolver rather than an automatic.

The dog bell is actually not a training device but is necessary for the hunter or trainer to keep track of the dog in heavy cover. For Pointing dogs the bell has an extra value....when the noise stops, the dog is on point.

The flushing whip is specifically used during field trials and training for the usual purpose of flushing out the birds in heavy cover. The standard flushing whip is about 20 to 36 inches long and is made of leather surrounding a flexible spring which is at least two thirds the length of the whip. Usually the flushing whip has a snap on the end so that the trainer can attach it to his clothing or gear. It can also be used as a correction tool in the sense that it can be used to snap for gaining the attention of the dog or to encourage him to sit or to come to heel by brushing it against the dogs body. It should never be used to physically "beat" the dog. Not only is it not made for that purpose but there are much better and less cruel methods of conveying correction than beating the dog.

The training dummies are also important in field training a retriever. Most are of the heavy duty canvas type and often are the type that can float. The dummies can be impregnated with bird scent or can have feathers attached. They are used for teaching the dog to retrieve and should be soft enough that they resemble the softness of the body of a bird. They come in many sizes for small and larger dogs. Most are made with a rope attached for easy throwing and retrievability.

There are many other articles for training which the modern hunter has access to but the ones mentioned are the old favorites and are the most useful and basic necessary tools for training a gundog.

For travel, White Pine soft half-slip collars with tags. Love these collars, because the dogs can't slip out of them, and they provide control.

For sledding:
1" nylon half-slip collars. I choose these for comfort, durability and safety -- again, it is nearly impossible for a dog to back out of these collars, but they don't tighten enough to choke.

For training:
Well-fitted choke chain or prong collar, depending on the need. Used for control and correction. I'm very well aware of how these collars need to fit for maximum impact with minimal correction.
Also, a 4-ft. leather lead.

For dog shows:
Diamond-link ("snake") or jeweler's link choke chain, various widths. I use these for control, a bit "dressier" than your average choke chain and not as easy to see against the dog's coat. Like a regular choke, should fit high and snug on the dog's neck.
