You are considering getting a dog.Â Why?Â If one of these is your reason, you need to reconsider.Â

You want a dog for protectionÂ

Some people get dogs for security, forgetting that dogs are living, breathing, social creatures with a need to be part of a pack.Â Dogs which are relegated to the backyard as security instead of being integrated into the family are often not well socialized and can often end up being aggressive.Â Dogs that are isolated alone in the backyard are more likely to attack and cause problems for their owners with neighbors and with law enforcement.Â If you are not in a position to offer a dog a genuine home, with human interaction, you should not get a dog.Â A security system for your home is a far better solution for protecting your home.Â Additionally, you will never have to worry about a vet bill or getting your security system groomed!

Your kids need a toyÂ

Sometimes parents get a dog for the kids, hoping that the dog will babysit them or entertain them.Â This is not a good idea either.Â Dogs aren't toys.Â You should only get your kids a dog if they really want one, are ready for the responsibility and are able to understand that the dog is a real, living creature.Â A dog should be welcomed by everyone in the family.Â And you should know before you get any dog that no matter what, you, will have to be ultimately responsible for its feeding and care.Â A dog is not a toy or something to add to the dÃ©cor.Â Bringing a dog home makes him part of your family, and as a result, he deserves the love and care any other family member would receive.

You're going to make lots of money breeding your dog!

There are many wonderful breeders in the world who are devoted to improving their breeds.Â There are also many hardworking, licensed commercial breeders who breed healthy dogs for people because there is a demand for purebred dogs.Â Unfortunately, there are also some people who think they can make a lot of money breeding dogs just because they have a male and a female.Â Good breeders may have spent many years with their breed and know all about it, both its strengths and weaknesses.Â They have animals that have been through health testing to make sure they are sound for breeding.Â There are numerous expenses associated with good breeding that the novice doesn't usually know about.Â It probably seems like it would be easy to make money at breeding dogs - until your female requires a cesarean section in the middle of the night to save the puppies or you start adding up how much puppy shots for nine puppies cost, or how much it costs to raise a litter for eight weeks, not to mention stud fees.Â If a breeder tries to do things the right way (including health testing), you can quickly see that breeding can be very expensive.Â If you want a pet then don't think about breeding him or her for profit.Â That's a very bad reason to get a dog and it's not something you want to go through with your pet.Â

There are lots of good reasons for getting a pet.Â The reasons listed above aren't on the list.Â Make sure your reason for getting a dog is a good one and that you have the time to commit to your new relationship!

If you don't already own a dog, it is important to choose the right breed for your family. Deciding on getting a pet, much less what type of pet, is a very tough decision. Once you and your family decide on getting a dog, it is important that you find the right dog that fits your family's lifestyle. For those that have young children, you need to find a dog that is suitable and one you can trust. To help with your search, listed is information on five types of dogs that are the most suitable for having around young children.

1. Retrievers

This category consists of both Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers. Both dogs are loyal and devoted family members and can be easily trained. These dogs love the outdoors and will play very well with your young kids. Kids usually tend to have more patience with the dogs than adults, which will help the bond between the dog and the child and help to train the dog to behave properly. Retrievers make great companions for kids of all ages.

2. Poodles

Poodles come in a variation of sizes, which gives you the choice of what size of poodle would best suit your family. This breed can work with the best of them - hunting, swimming and retrieving! They are also extremely intelligent and do well in all dog sports. Their affectionate and patient nature makes them a great choice for families. Another plus with this breed is the lack of shedding.

3. Pug

Pugs are a smaller breed, yet have the personality of a big loyal dog. These stocky little wrinkled dogs have been described by breed experts using the Latin term "multum in parvo" ("much in little"). This breed is incredibly sociable, preferring the company of humans over other dogs or pets (though they usually do get along with them). They seem to have a special bond with children and love to play.

4. Irish Setter

This is a larger breed of dog, yet they are calm and love to be within a family. They are loyal and enjoy watching over young kids. These dogs are eager to please, so they are easily trained to follow commands and day-to-day behavior. Originally, these dogs were bred for hunting, but they also make a great family pet.

5. Bichon Frise

The bichon frise is a smaller breed that looks like a big cuddly white fluff ball. They have happy-go-lucky spirits and are faithful and obedient. This breed stands out from other small dog breeds because of their lovable personality. The bichon does however require regular grooming, but because of its small stature does not have the hip problems like larger dog breeds.

All of the above listed breeds are proven to be great family pets, especially those with small children. These breeds range from large to small in size, yet all of them have the best qualities that you can find in a dog. I'm sure that any of these would be great additions to a family with children.
