Keeping your dog safe is a concern for every pet owner. There are many ways to protect your pet including fencing in your yard, gating off areas where they could get hurt, and giving them the proper care and nutrition. One of the simplest ways to keep them safe is a collar and pet tags. Collars help with pet identification, exercise, and can be used for training purposes. Many types of collars are available and it may be hard to choose the right one for your dog.
The three main purposes of a collar are for control, identification, and fashion. Most have a place for the identification and vaccination tags to be attached as well as a place for a leash. A basic nylon collar can be used for a house dog that just needs identification tags to help find their home if they get loose. Larger breeds may need a stronger collar. Dogs that spend a lot of their time outdoors may need collars that allow them to get free if they get hung up on an item. Training collars might be an option if you will be training your dog.
A regular dog collar can be made with leather, nylon, or cotton. They are available in many sizes and colors. Clasps vary as well. Included in these are quick release collars that clasp with a plastic clip and breakaway collars that have a safety clip which allows them to get free if they get caught on something. Halters can be a good alternative to a collar if the dog will be on a leash and gets over excited. A halter goes around the dog's mouth but they are still able to use their mouth. Harnesses wrap around the body and are very good for smaller dogs. When the dog lunges, they will not choke themselves or get free.
Choke collars are used for dog training. They can be made of medal, leather, or nylon. They have rings at either end that allow it to cinch up when the leash is pulled and then released after the dog has been corrected. Pinch collars have prongs on the inside of the collar and pressure is placed on the dog's neck when pulled. They are used in training when other types of training collars are not responded to and can often be used to train a dog not to pull on their leash.
The main thing to consider when choosing from the many dog collars available is what purpose it will serve. A standard collar will do for identification. If your dog will be outdoors, use a breakaway collar so they do not choke when getting stuck on something. Use a harness for smaller dogs that will be walked regularly. They make walking a lot easier and the dog cannot hurt themselves or get loose as easily. Halters serve the same purpose for larger dogs. Various collars exist for training besides the choke or pinch collars. Research the training method and results you want and then choose the appropriate training collar.
Dog collars are available in a large variety and serve many purposes. They can be used for identification, control, training, and for looks. Determine what the collar will be used for and your decision will be a lot easier. And you will always need the proper dog supplements to keep your dog healthy and happy. If you currently own a dog that seems a bit hard to train then you might be considering buying an electronic dog training collar. While the idea of using an electronic collar may be appealing it is important to understand that it is just another method of training your dog. It is not the be all and end all of dog training, but used properly it can deliver very good results when other training methods just donÂ’t seem to work.
When you go to buy an electronic dog training collar be aware that you will find several different types that have differences in how they work. The type most people are familiar with is the electronic shock collar, which emits a low voltage charge that gets the dog attention. There are two other types of electric dog collars, one that works by emitting a high pitched sound that the dog finds extremely annoying and the other choice is a citronella collar that works by squirting citronella in front of the dogÂ’s nose. Dogs do not particularly like the smell of citronella. No matter which version you choose they all work by getting your dogs attention and annoying it in an unpleasant way. Dogs, much like humans, will do whatever is necessary to avoid these annoyances even if it means obeying their owner.
Using an electronic dog training collar is rather straightforward, but remember, it is only a tool to help you achieve the results you want with your dog. The collar won’t train your dog for you; it is a tool that you use to reprimand your dog when it does not obey your commands. For instance when training your dog to sit give the command “sit”, push gently but firmly on the lower back which makes your dog assume the sitting position. You must do this several times so the dog understands what you are asking it to do. Only after demonstrating to the dog several times what he is to do with a certain command do you try and give the command without any human intervention, ie pushing his but down. A dog that catches on quick and obeys should be praised and rewarded with a treat. If the dog refuses to obey this is the time to use the electronic collar. After getting your dogs attention with the collar start over by giving the command and pushing his hind end down into the sitting position and repeat the whole process over.
One of the more popular uses for an electronic dog training collar is the invisible fence. By running a thin wire around the outside of your yard the dog that sets off a beeping alarm whenever your dog approaches the property boundaries the dog learns to stay on your property and not wander off. If the dog ignores the beeping and continues to approach the boundary the collar will give a low grade shock that gets his attention. Soon the dog learns to recognize the beeping and what ignoring the warning means. It should be mentioned that while this method works with the majority of dogs if your dog is overly aggressive no amount of beeping, citronella, or electrical shock will keep him from running through an invisible fence boundary.
Using an electronic dog training collar is a good alternative to training a hard to train dog as long as it is used for its intended purpose. This type of dog collar should be used as a training tool that helps modify a dogÂ’s behavior. It should never be used as a way to punish or in any way inflict needless pain on a dog. Used correctly chances are you will only need to use it sparingly and before long your dog will learn to obey your commands without it.

Dog Spiked Collar How do pitbull owners help change the image of the pitbull?
I'm part of a pitbull club in my area and one of the central themes is "redefining the image." Some members often disagree about putting spiked collars on the dogs or displaying the dogs using large chains while involved in public events. I believe if the pitbulls image is going to be changed societies opinion and views are very important. I would also like any opinions on what other methods could we use to improve or change this image.
Be on top of the training, constantly. I'm paraphrasing a quote I read, but your dog can't be as good as all the other dogs, s/he has to be BETTER. I took mine to a professional trainer who gave me some valuable tips. She responds extremely well to me. People do back up at first when they see her but when they realize how sweet and well behaved she is they warm up immediately. I call her my PitBull ambassador.
With regard to getting the word out, it's not hard if you know where to look. Pits are drug dogs, rescue dogs, volunteer dogs, and aid dogs. Find as many as you can and put their image out. It's all about propaganda. Pit bulls got a bad rap from it, they can get thier good rap back the same way.
Did you know the Lil Rascals dog is/was a pit? And Teddy Roosevelt's family dog. I show people those images as often as I can

Headcollar Dog Gentle Leader or Headcollar? Which one works better? Will not use Prong/Choke because not experienced enough.?
Just wondering which one works better for training a dog to not pull. I will not use Prong/Choke b/c I am not experienced enough to use one correctly. Thanks.
I know how to use them, and Tiger is a bit smaller than a Border Collie. Same body build.
@Malice...LMAO...not a brainwashed wussy child...if they are so easy to use then I will use one and see if it works. Now, instead of screaming why don't you explain how to use it?
I feel I can train my own dog, with assistance of training tools. I don't need someone to train my dog for me.
Sorry, ok Pop & Release, see i"m not familiar with prongs....didn't know that that was what it meant!
Mutt, all those are worthy training options, IF you are trained in how to use them. An improperly used head collar is just as bad as an improperly used prong collar. It is admirable that you are seeking knowledge in something you are not familiar with prior to just jumping in and using it. Smart cookie!
Its difficult to explain full and proper use of these in text form. I would suggest that you call around and find a reputable trainer, who is experienced in the use of these, and can give you a private lesson to demonstrate them and teach you how to use them, that way you could try each one and that way, learn which works best for you. Also, if your guy is pulling, perhaps hes just not working hard enough. I imainge he would do well wearing a pack, thats carrying a little weight in it, this would give him a "job" and make him work more, which is going to serve to fulfil the mental need for work in him as well as the physical need for work. Also would not hurt to have a few lessons with your guy, Obedience is an excellent way to strengthen the bond with your dog, and teach him not to pull at the same time.
Good luck, HTH,
