If you currently own a dog that seems a bit hard to train then you might be considering buying an electronic dog training collar. While the idea of using an electronic collar may be appealing it is important to understand that it is just another method of training your dog. It is not the be all and end all of dog training, but used properly it can deliver very good results when other training methods just donÂ’t seem to work.

When you go to buy an electronic dog training collar be aware that you will find several different types that have differences in how they work. The type most people are familiar with is the electronic shock collar, which emits a low voltage charge that gets the dog attention. There are two other types of electric dog collars, one that works by emitting a high pitched sound that the dog finds extremely annoying and the other choice is a citronella collar that works by squirting citronella in front of the dogÂ’s nose. Dogs do not particularly like the smell of citronella. No matter which version you choose they all work by getting your dogs attention and annoying it in an unpleasant way. Dogs, much like humans, will do whatever is necessary to avoid these annoyances even if it means obeying their owner.

Using an electronic dog training collar is rather straightforward, but remember, it is only a tool to help you achieve the results you want with your dog. The collar won’t train your dog for you; it is a tool that you use to reprimand your dog when it does not obey your commands. For instance when training your dog to sit give the command “sit”, push gently but firmly on the lower back which makes your dog assume the sitting position. You must do this several times so the dog understands what you are asking it to do. Only after demonstrating to the dog several times what he is to do with a certain command do you try and give the command without any human intervention, ie pushing his but down. A dog that catches on quick and obeys should be praised and rewarded with a treat. If the dog refuses to obey this is the time to use the electronic collar. After getting your dogs attention with the collar start over by giving the command and pushing his hind end down into the sitting position and repeat the whole process over.

One of the more popular uses for an electronic dog training collar is the invisible fence. By running a thin wire around the outside of your yard the dog that sets off a beeping alarm whenever your dog approaches the property boundaries the dog learns to stay on your property and not wander off. If the dog ignores the beeping and continues to approach the boundary the collar will give a low grade shock that gets his attention. Soon the dog learns to recognize the beeping and what ignoring the warning means. It should be mentioned that while this method works with the majority of dogs if your dog is overly aggressive no amount of beeping, citronella, or electrical shock will keep him from running through an invisible fence boundary.

Using an electronic dog training collar is a good alternative to training a hard to train dog as long as it is used for its intended purpose. This type of dog collar should be used as a training tool that helps modify a dogÂ’s behavior. It should never be used as a way to punish or in any way inflict needless pain on a dog. Used correctly chances are you will only need to use it sparingly and before long your dog will learn to obey your commands without it.

Goldendoodles are a very popular hybrid dog. Poodles and Golden Retrievers are both very popular breeds; they use their high native intelligence in a heart-felt desire to please people. And the Goldendoodle puppy generally shares these traits.

Goldendoodles are similar to Cockapoos (a designer dog of Cocker Spaniel and Poodle mix), but are usually much larger. Goldendoodle females are about 40 to 60 pounds; males are around 60 to 70 pounds. These weights represent a cross of a Golden Retriever with a Standard Poodle; Golden Retriever crosses with Miniature Poodles are generally smaller.

One of the goals of breeders of these dogs is a desire to breed dogs that are more hypoallergenic. This is hoped to be one of the results of the Poodle's contribution to the mix. Poodles do not shed as much as most other breeds. When combined with the genes of a Golden Retriever -- a shedder extraordinaire -- the hope is that the puppies will have all the good traits -- an active, friendly, intelligent dog -- with a coat more like the Poodle and with the Poodle's lower level of shedding.

Some breeders will attempt to claim that Goldendoodles are hypoallergenic; the truth is that it depends upon the individual dog. Because of their gentleness and trainability, Goldendoodles have been used as guide dogs and assistance dogs for more than 20 years.

First-generation Goldendoodles -- those bred from a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, rather than from a pair of Goldendoodles -- tend to be more uniform. Some of these puppies will resemble Golden Retrievers; others will resemble Poodles. Temperaments may lean toward the Poodle or toward that of the Golden Retriever parent. Coats may range from black, blond, caramel, chocolate, parti-colored, phantom colored, red, silver, and other Poodle-like colors. Your competent breeder, familiar with Goldendoodles, will have a pretty good idea of how each puppy will develop.

When breeding designer dogs, breeders are, among other things, trying to produce dogs without some of the problems known to the two separate breeds. This is known as "hybrid vigor." The first generation of such breeding can appear to be lacking some of the problems known to exist among the purebred dogs. First generation Goldendoodles may be healthy; then again, they may not.

The difficulty arises when both parents have similar genetic problems. For instance, hip dysplasia is a known problem within the Golden Retriever breed. If the Poodle parent shares this problem then the difference in breeds is of no effect and the puppies will probably inherit a tendency toward similar hip dysplasia difficulties.

For this reason, it is vitally important that your breeder is testing/investigating the health and lineage of the both parents. Do not buy a Goldendoodle -- or any other dog, for that matter -- without discussing the health-and-bloodline issues with the breeder. Because Poodles demonstrate a tendency toward progressive retinal atrophy, this can also be an issue with Goldendoodles.

When a breeder breeds from succeeding generations of Goldendoodles -- rather than breeding directly from a Golden Retriever and a Poodle -- the benefits begin to subside and the puppies will tend to resemble more closely either a Poodle or a Golden Retriever.

Goldendoodles -- in fact, many designer dogs -- are currently very popular. But before you bring one home, do your research concerning potential health problems. Be especially concerned if both breeds share a tendency toward the same problem(s). And familiarize yourself with the contributing breeds, too. That is, if you don't like Poodles or you don't like Golden Retrievers as separate breeds, then there's a good chance you won't like the Goldendoodle, either.

Bullmastiff Origin

The Bullmastiff origin and history display a great example of a purpose-bred dog with a lineage that can be easily traced and understood. The Bullmastiff dog breed history originates from England and while its history is not as long and storied as other breeds, it is a close descendant of one of the oldest breed of dogs in England, the Mastiff. The Mastiff, a giant dog breed that descended from the Alaunt and the Molosser, is believed to have been introduced into ancient Britain more than 2000 years ago.

The Bullmastiff, however, was only introduced in about 1860 when the Mastiff was crossed with the Old English Bulldog. At this time, gamekeepers needed a dog to help protect their estates and flocks from game poachers, mostly poachers of deer from their estate. The Mastiff was apparently too slow and cumbersome for the job and the Bulldog was too small to be effective. The solution was a mix of about 60% Mastiff with 40% Bulldog, thus creating the Bullmastiff.

This new dog called the "Mastiff with a touch of bull" or more commonly Bullmastiff, was just what gamekeepers needed to watch their estates as his dark coat and quiet demeanor could surprise poachers, and then, rather than maul or kill the criminal, they would pin them to the ground without biting them. The Bullmastiff origin, then, arises from this practical application and was commonly called the "gamekeeper's night dog".

Bullmastiff Dog Breed History

The Bullmastiff dog breed was used for some time as the gamekeeper's guard, however, eventually the Bullmastiff was used in other capacities, such as a sentry or guard dog as well as work with the army and police. The crossbreeding between the Mastiff and the Bulldog and the magic 60/40 mix, continued, but eventually a purebred line was formed. In 1924 some conformity was established in the Bullmastiff dog breed and it was recognized by the English Kennel Club in 1924.

The American Kennel Club later would recognize the breed in 1933. The dog was famously used to guard the DeBeer diamond mines in South Africa as well as John D. Rockefeller's New York estate in addition to being used in emergencies such as the one in Mau-Mau Uprising in Kenya.

As a potential Yorkshire Terrier buyer, one of the first decisions you have is determining if a male or female dog is the best match for you.

There are certain characteristics that most male and female Yorkies will have, and knowing these characteristics will help you make the best choice.

Even if you plan to spay or neuter your Yorkshire Terrier, it is still important to consider the characteristics of male and female dogs, as they will still be present even after the procedure, although the characteristics will not be as pronounced.

Avoid the temptation to just pick the "cutest" puppy or older Yorkie when choosing from Yorkshire Terrier breeders, and try to determine which gender will be the best possible match for you and your family.

Males

One of the most obvious physical characteristics of the male dog is that it is generally larger than females of the same breed, and eats more. Males are heavier, taller and stronger than female dogs, although this may be particularly of concern more in the larger breed dogs. Usually the size difference will only be a few inches in height, but it may be more substantial in weight. Male dogs tend to eat significantly more food than non-pregnant females.

Teacup Yorkies, being so small, tend to eat less but bear in mind Teacup Yorkies are not a recognized breed.

Male Yorkshire Terriers may be more aggressive and independent than female dogs. Again, this is a more important consideration in larger breeds than smaller breeds. Some male Yorkies tend to be more difficult to manage in small, confined areas and often do not socialize well with other males. This will be particularly true if there are female dogs in the area that are in heat.

A male Yorkshire Terrier often will form a closer bond with one person, whereas a female dog tends to bond equally with many people.

Male Yorkshire Terrier puppies to develop quicker sexually than female dogs, and will display sexual tendencies at a younger age. This is a concern if there are other dogs in the house or in the neighborhood that may come into heat. The male dogs will tend to roam, as they can smell female dogs in heat for many miles and if allowed, may even be gone for several days in a row in pursuit of females. Neutering your male Yorkshire Terrier help will minimize this problem.

You may find that the male becomes very possessive of the female - even towards humans. This may be a concern if you have small children in house, or do not have the dogs kenneled. In addition, the male may become aggressive towards the female if she is not receptive to his advances. Any breeding pair of dogs needs to be carefully monitored.

Male Yorkshire Terrier puppies tend to be more difficult to train than female Yorkshire Terrier puppies, and are more independent in nature. They also tend to be friskier and require more exercise. Males may be more difficult to socialize with other animals and other dogs, and need to begin socialization training at a young age.

Females

Female Yorkshire Terriers tend to be smaller than male dogs of the same breed and are often less aggressive. However, a female dog protecting a litter of puppies can be just as aggressive as a male. A female Yorkshire Terrier with her first litter should be carefully monitored for the first few weeks, to see how protective she becomes of the puppies.

Females will come into heat at least twice a year for approximately three weeks. During this time there will be a noticeable discharge of fluid from the female, that is designed to attract the male dog. Spaying the female Yorkshire Terrier will prevent this from occurring. If the female is to be used for breeding purposes, there are products on the market designed to address this problem.

Female Yorkies tend to be less excitable and easier to train. They can, however, become easily cowed or shy if treated harshly, or scolded in a rough or angry tone of voice. Female dogs tend to bond with many people. They may be less protective in general than male dogs, however are also easier to socialize with other animals.

Female dogs will fight with other females, but tend to get along generally well with male dogs. Usually a group of female dogs will establish a hierarchy, and will bond with each other after the initial pecking order is established.

Similarities

With both male and female dogs, it is important to consider the amount of time, attention and effort that will be spent in training the dogs and socializing with them afterwards. Both male and females require the same amount of exercise, training, feeding, general care, and love. In addition, regular veterinary checkups and yearly vaccinations will be required for both genders.

Deciding on a male or female Yorkshire Terrier is largely a personal decision. Unless the dog is being used for breeding purposes, consideration should be given to spaying or neutering the animal as soon as recommended by your veterinarian, to prevent unwanted pregnancies and puppies.
