Short-haired dog breeds have many advantages over long-haired breeds. One of these is that short-haired dog breeds do not shed as much hair. While a shaggier coat makes a dog look fluffier and aesthetically more pleasing, it should be remembered that more hair means more time spent on bathing and grooming. Short-hairs are also good because pests can not hide on them very well, so they are better from a hygienic point of view.

Here are some grooming tips for short-haired dog breeds.

- Brush your dog regularly, preferably at least once a day. Make sure to brush against the hair growth direction to monitor for pests.

- Stainless steel combs are best for short-haired dogs. Slicker brushes are better for medium to long-haired dogs. Use a flea comb during the summer days to make certain your dog has not attracted those parasites. A bristle brush can be a final touch for adding gloss to the dog's coat.

- In case you dog has a tendency to avoid being brushed because of dislike for the process, it might be a good idea to try brushing immediately after play time. Start gently by brushing in the hair growth direction. Remember that successful training means frequent rewards. Give your dog a treat after the first brushing is complete. Increase the length of the brushing sessions little by little to allow the dog to get used to it.

- Brushing is also important before giving your dog a bath. Wet matted hair is only going to create problems later on, so make sure there is no matted hair before proceeding with the bath. Water and good shampoo in a sink works great for small dogs. Note that shampoos used by humans are not good for dogs and can cause irritation that might require medication. Start with the tail and wash the head the last. No one likes soap in his or her eyes.

- Rinse as many times as required to make sure that all residual shampoo has been rinsed out of the dog's coat.

- Short-haired dog breeds will naturally dry of faster. Usually a gentle towel rub is all that they need. Longer haired dogs need more attention and you should consider brushing the hair while it is drying to avoid tangles.

- If your dog tends to dislike baths then remember to reward it with a treat after each bathing session.

When most people picture a Weimaraner, they picture a large, regal-looking dog with a short, gray coat. This gray is often a muted brown, giving the dog's color an overall sepia tone, like an old photograph. However, there is another coat color for Weimaraners. This color is also gray, but is richer, darker, and has beautiful undertones of blue. Whereas the standard Weimaraner's gray coat color is derivative of a brown coat, the Blue Weimaraner's coat color is a muted black with no brown hues. Blue Weimaraners range from a slate gray to a dark gunmetal color. These dogs are quite beautiful, though somewhat rare.

Many Weimaraner clubs accept this gorgeous coat variation without hesitation. Unfortunately, most large canine registries refuse to recognize the Blue Weimaraner and see its coat color, however attractive, as a flaw. Until the 1970s, this was not always the case. In '72, the American Kennel Club altered its regulations for the breed to ban Blue Weimaraners from competing in the ring, however, the American Kennel Club will allow registration of a Blue Weimaraner under certain circumstances. For instance, if both the dog's sire and dam are AKC registered, he or she can be registered with the AKC as well. The thing is, registration with the AKC doesn't imply full acceptance. Blue Weimaraners are only allowed to compete in non-breed specific competitions, such as agility trials, obedience trials, and other various competitions that are based on performance instead of appearance.

It is assumed that the Blue Weimaraner is an intentional variation of the genetic breed, as this darker coat coloration has only appeared very, very rarely when not specifically bred for. In fact, there are only two documented cases of Blue Weimaraners being born to a gray sire and gray dam in the twentieth century, the first of which was in Austria in the latter half of the '40s. A man called Captain Holt was traveling through Germany and was entranced by this different-colored dog. He purchased his new Weimaraner, imported him to the United States, and used him to sire many generations of beautiful Blue Weimaraners. This single dog is considered the primary reason for the expansion of the Weimaraner's blue coat variation in the United States. Many of the dogs sired by Captain Holt's Blue Weimaraner were champions of their breed.

Originally, when Captain Holt discovered the Blue Weimaraner, it was assumed that the blue coat gene was recessive. In previous years, studies of the genetics and breeding patterns of the Weimaraner have proved just the opposite. The genes that dictate coat color of a dog are called "alleles". The Weimaraner breed posses only two of these: blue and gray. Not all blue alleles are passed down from sire or dam to puppy, so it is possible that Weimaraners of blue parents can be born gray. However, if the puppy does inherit the blue allele, its coat color will most definitely be blue.

The Blue Weimaraner is a beautiful and impressive variation of the standard Weimaraner. Many Blue Weimaraner enthusiasts consider it very unfortunate and short-sighted that this fascinating coloration is not recognized by the American Kennel Club and other large dog registries. Fans and breeders of the Blue Weimaraner are fighting to not only ensure the health and longevity of the breed, but to have the AKC recognize the Blue Weimaraner as a valid breed in competition.

Doberman Pinscher

The Doberman Pinscher is a German breed that originated sometime in the late 19th century. It is suspected that this breed developed by crossing the Rottweiler, a Black and Tan Terrier, and a short-haired shepherd. This breed was developed as a guard dog. Today this breed is still used as a guard dog, however, they are also used for a companion dog, a guard dog, a watch dog, a defense dog, and a family dog.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a British breed that originated from the King Charles Spaniel breed. The British breeders achieved a longer face and a heavier build by crossing the King Charles Spaniel with a Cocker Spaniel. The resulting dog breed stands between 12 and 13 inches tall and weigh between 10 and 18 pounds. They come in a variety of color combinations including black and tan, ruby and white and Blenheim (chestnut and white and tan.)

To care for this breed you will need to brush their coat weekly. Like most breeds with long floppy ears you will need to check their ears regularly and make sure that they stay clean. This breed doesnÂ’t require a lot of exercise. You can keep them healthy by simply playing with them in the backyard or by taking them for a walk around the block once a day. Some of the health issues that you will need to keep your eyes open for include heart murmurs, patella luxation, ear infections, and eye conditions.

Siberian Husky

The Siberian Husky, also called the Arctic Husky, is a Russian breed that was developed as a sled dog. They are a working dog that requires both physical and mental stimulation to stay happy, healthy, and out of trouble. They are a medium sized dog that stands between 20 and 23.5 inches tall and they weigh between 35 and 60 pounds. They have a medium length thick coat that has a double layer. The outer layer is straight and smooth and the undercoat is dense and downy. They have a lot of color variations. However, having a white base with grey or red markings on their backs, around their eyes, and on their foreheads, is common.

Black and Tan Coonhound

The Black and Tan Coonhound, also referred to as the American Black and Tan Coonhound, is an American hunting dog breed. It is suspected that this breed originated when the Bloodhound, the American Foxhound and the English Foxhound were crossed. This dog usually stands between 23 and 27 inches tall, and it usually weighs in between 55 and 75 pounds. They have a dense coat of short hair that is black and tan.

Collie

The Collie, also referred to as the Scottish Collie, is a Scottish breed that was developed as a sheepdog. They come in two varieties, rough and smooth. The Smooth Coated Collie has a medium length coat that is soft and dense. The Rough Coated Collie has short hair that is smooth. Both variations come in colors of blue merle, sable and white, and tri colored. This is a medium sized dog that typically stands between 22 and 26 inches tall.

You are considering getting a dog. Why? If one of these is your reason, you need to reconsider. 

You want a dog for protection 

Some people get dogs for security, forgetting that dogs are living, breathing, social creatures with a need to be part of a pack.  Dogs which are relegated to the backyard as security instead of being integrated into the family are often not well socialized and can often end up being aggressive.  Dogs that are isolated alone in the backyard are more likely to attack and cause problems for their owners with neighbors and with law enforcement.  If you are not in a position to offer a dog a genuine home, with human interaction, you should not get a dog.  A security system for your home is a far better solution for protecting your home.  Additionally, you will never have to worry about a vet bill or getting your security system groomed!

Your kids need a toy 

Sometimes parents get a dog for the kids, hoping that the dog will babysit them or entertain them.  This is not a good idea either.  Dogs aren't toys.  You should only get your kids a dog if they really want one, are ready for the responsibility and are able to understand that the dog is a real, living creature.  A dog should be welcomed by everyone in the family.  And you should know before you get any dog that no matter what, you, will have to be ultimately responsible for its feeding and care.  A dog is not a toy or something to add to the décor.  Bringing a dog home makes him part of your family, and as a result, he deserves the love and care any other family member would receive.

You're going to make lots of money breeding your dog!

There are many wonderful breeders in the world who are devoted to improving their breeds.  There are also many hardworking, licensed commercial breeders who breed healthy dogs for people because there is a demand for purebred dogs.  Unfortunately, there are also some people who think they can make a lot of money breeding dogs just because they have a male and a female.  Good breeders may have spent many years with their breed and know all about it, both its strengths and weaknesses.  They have animals that have been through health testing to make sure they are sound for breeding.  There are numerous expenses associated with good breeding that the novice doesn't usually know about.  It probably seems like it would be easy to make money at breeding dogs - until your female requires a cesarean section in the middle of the night to save the puppies or you start adding up how much puppy shots for nine puppies cost, or how much it costs to raise a litter for eight weeks, not to mention stud fees.  If a breeder tries to do things the right way (including health testing), you can quickly see that breeding can be very expensive.  If you want a pet then don't think about breeding him or her for profit.  That's a very bad reason to get a dog and it's not something you want to go through with your pet. 

There are lots of good reasons for getting a pet.  The reasons listed above aren't on the list.  Make sure your reason for getting a dog is a good one and that you have the time to commit to your new relationship!

With the dog population increasing in the United States every year, more and more pet owners are forced to deal with the ever-more growing problem of aggressive dog behavior. Aggressive dog behavior sends hundreds of thousands of people to the emergency room every year because of dog bites. For most families they have no clue that their dog is aggressive until he or she bites a loved one for the first time. The worst part of this situation for most dog owners isn't that one of their family members may need a few stitches. The problem is that now their beloved dog, beloved family member almost, may now need to be put down because of their aggressive behavior.

The largest group of people attacked by aggressive dogs is children under the age of twelve. Often times children are more susceptible to dog bites because of their smaller size, and not fully understanding how the mind of a dog works. Dogs cannot comprehend reasoning or rational behavior, its just not in their nature. Canines have a basic understanding of the world, if they feel threatened or scared they respond often times with violent behavior. Now this reaction most of the time isn't your dogs fault, or your child's fault. Young children and dogs really don't know any better. So as the dog owner, and adult, it is your job to set boundaries and rules for all persons of canines living in your home.

Whether you agree or not, I believe over the past 15 or so years, many dogs owners are treating their pets as a true member of the family, instead of the family pet. While I agree you should treat your dog well with love and respect, you must understand that regardless of how much you love your dog, it is in essence still a dog. Dogs cannot think like us, and never will. So while your canine is still a puppy you must guide them with proper training and boundaries. You must get it into their heads that YOU are the boss, you are the pack leader and what you say goes. Humanizing your pet is often times the root of aggressive dog behavior because your dog feels your family and him are on the same level, instead of thinking you are the leader and he is just a follower.

As a dog owner you must take the responsibility to be on the watch for signs of aggressive dog behavior.If your dog ever shows signs of aggression towards members of your family or strangers you must take charge and squash the problem right from the start. Ignoring dog aggression and hoping it goes away and disappears will only make matters worse. Dogs do not forget about their aggression like humans, they will continue to show their aggressive side when agitated unless you put your foot down on against their aggressive dog behavior. Aggression in dogs is not just a breed problem, it is a dog obedience problem.

With living in an apartment, picking the right dog can be difficult-especially coming from a person who isn't partial to small dogs. After doing some research, I was surprised to find that there are numerous large-breed dogs that are well-suited for apartment living.

1. Mastiff - Mastiffs are huge so when my boyfriend told me they are actually perfect for apartments, I called him crazy. Come to find out, they really are! Because of their massive size, they tend to be lazy. Being calm-mannered dogs, they aren't yappers either. His parents have two mastiffs and I have only heard them bark when they feel there is danger. Also, they don't require a ton of exercise so a large backyard or constant walks are not necessary.

2. Greyhound - My cousin has a greyhound and it is, by far, the sweetest dog I have ever encountered. Though she is a large, lean dog, she sees herself as a lapdog, always trying to snuggle on the couch. Greyhounds are good apartment dogs because they are so mellow and sweet. They require a bit more exercise than a mastiff would but still not so that it would cut into your daily routine.

3. Great Dane - I would only recommend a Great Dane for someone that can make a commitment to daily jogs. Though Great Danes are mild mannered dogs that do not bark a lot and tend to be lazy around the house, they do need to get out a lot more than the other dogs listed.
