What can i do, White Dog-Gray Collar?

I have an all White Siberian Husky and we have one of those chain collars on him, not one with spikes! In any event, no matter what we do, every time we bath him or even get him professionally, he in a day or two has a gray collar on his fur from the chain... We have tried a harness when he was a young pup, however he found a way to chew it off, we have also tried leather, and all sorts of regular collars, and he just chews them off, this one has worked the best, he just gets that gray ring around his neck on his fur.... Any suggestions?
Only serious ones please.

You should never leave a choke chain (the chain collar) on a dog full-time. Those collars are for training only. He could catch the rings on something and choke himself -- then the grey ring around his neck would be the least of your worries.

The only way he could chew a collar off is if it's too loose. You should only be able to get 2-3 fingers (side by side, not stacked) under the dog's collar when he is wearing it; anything else is too loose.

I've had Siberians for 20 years, and none of them have chewed off a properly fitted collar. Get him a regular nylon or leather collar, fit it properly, and please don't leave a choke chain on him anymore.

As for the currently existing grey ring, find a good whitening shampoo -- talk to a groomer in your area for recommendations.

There are many different kinds of dog collars on the market that are available for you to buy. There are so many, in fact, that it can get a little confusing. What do you want to buy? A pinch collar, an adjustable nylon collar, a regular leather buckle? There are so many choices that it can make your head spin!!

Martingale collars are a special kind of dog collar & are starting to gain popularity with the general population of dog owners. They have other names like; safety collar, greyhound collar, humane choke collar, training collar, hound collar or limited slip collar. How a martingale collar works, is to tighten up around a dogs neck while giving greater control to the handler. This is done by a loop system that tightens around the dogs neck when it puts tension on the leash. It reduces the risk of a dog "backing out" of it's collar and escaping, which is important with dogs like Salukis, Greyhounds and Whippets, since the circumference of their heads is smaller than their necks.

Fitting a martingale collar to your dog is especially important. If the collar is too loose, it will not tighten up as it is supposed to & your dog could escape from it's collar. To measure your dog for a proper fit you must measure the dogs neck right behind the ears. Since most martingale collars come with an adjustable feature, choose a collar that offers a size that comfortably fits between the measurements that you have just taken.

If you want to use a martingale collar for training your dog, it is best to buy a nylon one that has a chain loop. This will give you greater control over your dog & not be as harsh as a regular choke chain collar. If you want to 'show off' your dog, there are many collar makers that make beautiful collars from colourful ribbons & fabrics. The choices are endless & you will make yourself dizzy just trying to pick the right one.

An important note about martingale collars as since they do have a loop, your dog should never be left unattended while wearing one. It could snag on something & hurt your dog.

You want a well trained, well mannered companion for a pet. We all do. To achieve one in the quickest manner possible you may be considering a dog shock collar. The manufacturers say that they provide a totally safe tool to assist you in training your dog.

But are they really safe and harmless to your pet? Before you decide to go this route in training you need to be aware that there are risks in using an electronic shock training collar.

A shock collar is primarily used to transmit small electric shocks to the dogs on which it is attached. It replaces the dog's original collar and the owner or trainer of the dog uses a transmitter to send signals to the shock collar. When the owner pushes a button the dog receives a shock to his neck from the collar.

There are three basic types of shock collars:

the manual collar which requires a person to press a button to shock the dog,
the bark activated shock collar and,
the electronic fence type that shocks the dog when it approaches or crosses a given perimeter.

Human error and equipment malfunction can cause inhumane treatment. The collar may randomly shock your dog when it has done nothing. This not only needlessly hurts your dog but it also can undo the good that has been done and may confuse the dog.Â

The owner or trainer may not properly control the strength or length of a transmission and create a shock that is so intense that it harms the dog. Some dogs seem to tolerate electric shocks until they are strong enough to seriously hurt them.

Some dogs also quickly figure out that the collars are the cause of the pain and fight to not have the collar put on. This can lead to worse behavior than the problem you are trying to correct.

Before deciding to purchase a shock collar to train your dog, search YouTube for dog shock collars and see the harm they are capable of causing even on humans that are much larger than a dog.

With other, more humane methods of training your dog available, the risks associated with using a dog shock collar are not worth the possible benefits. With a little patience and research you can discover safe, effective and humane ways to train your dog.

Keeping your dog safe is a concern for every pet owner. There are many ways to protect your pet including fencing in your yard, gating off areas where they could get hurt, and giving them the proper care and nutrition. One of the simplest ways to keep them safe is a collar and pet tags. Collars help with pet identification, exercise, and can be used for training purposes. Many types of collars are available and it may be hard to choose the right one for your dog.

The three main purposes of a collar are for control, identification, and fashion. Most have a place for the identification and vaccination tags to be attached as well as a place for a leash. A basic nylon collar can be used for a house dog that just needs identification tags to help find their home if they get loose. Larger breeds may need a stronger collar. Dogs that spend a lot of their time outdoors may need collars that allow them to get free if they get hung up on an item. Training collars might be an option if you will be training your dog.

A regular dog collar can be made with leather, nylon, or cotton. They are available in many sizes and colors. Clasps vary as well. Included in these are quick release collars that clasp with a plastic clip and breakaway collars that have a safety clip which allows them to get free if they get caught on something. Halters can be a good alternative to a collar if the dog will be on a leash and gets over excited. A halter goes around the dog's mouth but they are still able to use their mouth. Harnesses wrap around the body and are very good for smaller dogs. When the dog lunges, they will not choke themselves or get free.

Choke collars are used for dog training. They can be made of medal, leather, or nylon. They have rings at either end that allow it to cinch up when the leash is pulled and then released after the dog has been corrected. Pinch collars have prongs on the inside of the collar and pressure is placed on the dog's neck when pulled. They are used in training when other types of training collars are not responded to and can often be used to train a dog not to pull on their leash.

The main thing to consider when choosing from the many dog collars available is what purpose it will serve. A standard collar will do for identification. If your dog will be outdoors, use a breakaway collar so they do not choke when getting stuck on something. Use a harness for smaller dogs that will be walked regularly. They make walking a lot easier and the dog cannot hurt themselves or get loose as easily. Halters serve the same purpose for larger dogs. Various collars exist for training besides the choke or pinch collars. Research the training method and results you want and then choose the appropriate training collar.

Dog collars are available in a large variety and serve many purposes. They can be used for identification, control, training, and for looks. Recently there has been an increase in popularity in using a head collar for dog training because it has been found that head collars would give you the better control over your dog. The two most popular head collars available in the market are the Halti Training Collar and the Gentle Leader Training Collar.

How Does The Collar Works

The Halti and the Gentle Leader collars provide control over a dog's direction and movement without restricting airflow, panting, drinking or grasping objects in his mouth. Pressure on this type of collar pulls the dog's head towards the handler. When you have control of your dog's head, you have control of the dog.

These training collars look more like a horse's halter, with a band going around the back of the head and another around the nose. The leash snaps onto the collar under the chin. When you pull on the leash, the dog's head will either be pulled down or to the side Â– this makes it virtually impossible for the dog to move ahead or pull you forward.

Why Train With the Halti Collar

Training with a Halti or Gentle Leader collar has some advantages over a traditional training collar. Head collars are usually more intuitive to use than a traditional training collar. If walking your dog is important to you, head collars make this much easier. Head collars also make it easy to keep your dog from pulling you when walking. Head collars are a good tool for those who are not strong enough to control a dog with a regular training collar.

Head collars can be effectively used to control dogs in difficult situations or where training the dog would require too much effort. This could be situations were you know you will have a hard time controlling the dog, and it can include times when the dog will have a difficult time with self-control. ItÂ’s better to physically restrain the dog with a head collar than have the dog learn to be out of control.

When to Use The Head Collar

A good time to use the head collar is when you are on an outing where you know there will be high level distractions and youÂ’re also aware that you will be paying more attention to having fun than training your dog. Training a dog with the head collar is most effective when done in combination with reinforcement training (giving your dog a reward for good behavior).

There are some dog owners who are hesitant to use the collar because they feel it looks more like a muzzle than a collar. You may even find them asking you about the collar and it may make you feel uncomfortable. You can take some time off to explain the benefits of using the head collars and tell them they can use it to aid in their dog training too!

Boston terrier training should start with the idea that you are the leader of your Boston's pack. Like all dogs, Boston terriers are pack animals. If you are not acting like the pack leader, your Boston will step into the vacuum and take over that position. Training is essential when you get your puppy from a Boston terrier breeder. You may also need to do some training for an older dog you get by going through Boston terrier adoption.

One important consideration is what kind of leash to use in Boston terrier training. The "choke" collar is not a good idea. A Boston terrier has a delicate trachea, or windpipe, and the choke collar can injure it. Prong collars are not advisable since the pinch relies on pinching the dog when you pull at the collar. It's better to use halters on Boston terriers.

If you decide to do the Boston terrier training yourself, you may want to get a book or video on dog training. Some outstanding training books have been written by Cesar Milan, the Dog Whisperer, whose methods are featured on a National Geographic television show.

Another approach is to give your Boston terrier training at a class with other dogs. It's great fun to learn training methods with other dog owners. In a class, your Boston gets experience socializing with other people and dogs. If you have children, be sure to bring them with you. Children are greatly amused by the concept of school for dogs. At class, your children will learn the training methods along with you and your Boston. That will help to make your Boston terrier training efforts consistent among all the family members.

Some people like to have professional trainers train their dogs. That's fine if you have the money, but Boston terrier training is easy enough that shouldn't really need a professional. If you decide to use a professional trainer, be sure to practice commands with your Boston so he or she knows you are the alpha dog.

One thing to be aware of with Bostons is that they are very smart and will get bored with too much repetition. Your Boston may do very well with a command at first and then play around instead of obeying. That's a sign that he's bored and you should practice more later. Boston terrier training will be a lot of fun if you are a wise leader of your Boston's pack.

Some common dog training collars are: the prong collar, the Halti, the Gentle Leader, the choke collar and the electronic collar.

Prong Collar

This collar is made up of metal prongs that have been linked together. When you apply a pulling pressure to the collar (via the leash), it gives the dog a little pinch that is meant to duplicate the effect of a mother dog's teeth when she grabs here pup by the scruff of the neck.

The prong collar is a safe and effective training tool as long as the fit is correct and the collar is used appropriately. The prong collar should not be used if your dog is one to consistently yank at his leash.

The prong collar should fit snugly against the dog's neck. A properly fitted collar should leave approximately Â½ of a finger space in between your dog's neck and the prong tip. A collar that is any looser than that won't do its job and will needlessly chafe the dog's skin.

Halti and Gentle Leader

Both the Halti and Gentle Leader head halter devices look a lot like the harnesses that are used to control horses. While the prong collar is designed to condition behavior and movement, the head halter is designed to restrict or restrain your dog's movements. The thought behind the halter's design is that if you can control the head, the body will follow its movement.

When you pull on the attached leash the device closes the dog's mouth and restrains his head. These types of collars are great for dogs that lunge, bite or display other aggressive behaviors.

There are drawbacks, however, to using a head halter device. Most dogs will not take very easily to any device that positions a strap over its nose. You may have to struggle with your dog many, many times before he will submit to wearing it.

Another drawback is that pulling at your dog's head makes it a lot more likely that you'll inadvertently injure the dog's neck or back. To avoid injury, you should always make sure you're restraining your dog in the correct manner.

Choke Collar

The choke collar is one of those dog training devices that is often surrounded by controversy. Proponents of the choke collar point to its humane effectiveness, while critics say that the collar is more torture device than training tool. The truth is that what the collar becomes is largely dependent upon who is using it.

A properly fitted choke collar works by tightening around the dog's throat when the trainer pulls on the leash and then releasing pressure when the trainer does. If the collar is not put on correctly, however, the pressure will remain and the dog could truly choke to death. These collars are not meant for dogs that consistently pull at their leash or for inexperienced trainers. As is the case with head halters, the choke collar has the potential to cause injury to the dog's neck.

Electronic Collar

Just mention the option of an electronic dog collar and many dog owners (even some people with no pets at all) will look at you as if you have suggested training your dog with a stun gun.

The reality is that electronic collars can be a very humane way to train a dog. As with any other training device, however, whether or not it is used for purposes of cruelty is totally dependent upon the intentions and experience of the trainer.

The electronic collar works by allowing the trainer to give the dog small, electric shocks (via remote control) in order to modify its behavior. The intensity of the shock is left to the trainer. In general, the setting should be strong enough to make the dog's ears twitch. If the dog howls or yelps when the shock is delivered, then the setting is too high. Again, the electronic collar should only be used by experienced trainers.
