Designer Dog Beds Buying Tips

If you were able to watch Beverly Hills Chihuahua the movie then you are not a stranger to dogs living the good life. The leading dog character in the movie may be living an ultra-luxurious life but this is not far from reality especially for those who have the money to spend for dog luxuries. However, you need not spend much to pamper your pet because dogs would be contented living with affordable designer dog beds.

Dogs are like humans who need someplace to relax and just laze around. And just like humans dogs also have their own preferences when it comes to their sleeping habits. You can expect a wide variety of dog bed types to match not only your dog's sleeping preferences but also your home decor.

Dog sleeping preferences

Before you even take a look at designer dog beds make sure you know what kind of a sleeper your dog is. Is your dog a burrower, a curler, a sprawler or a leaner? The type bed you choose should match the sleeping position your dog prefers to maximize the dog bed use.

There are different types of dog beds from the simple dog pillows, nesting dog beds, orthopedic dog beds, luxury dog beds, outdoor dog beds and waterproof dog beds. Each of these beds offer a different kind of comfort for pet dogs so you only have to decide based on your budget, how it matches your home decor, the durability of the bed and the specific purpose for which it is needed and that's not just for sleeping.

One of the most preferred beds by dog owners are designer dog beds. These specialty beds give your dog a chance to sleep in a bed that looks just like the bed of his human. These dog beds are actually replicas of human furniture but are specifically designed and built for dogs. A dog that prefers to curl while sleeping but is also fond of stretching will have a grand time in his own specialty luxury bed or sofa. You can even match the dog's bed with that of your home decor.

Will the bed fit your dog?

Once you have determined your dog's sleeping preferences you now have to measure your dog from the tip of the head to the tail. Always make some allowances when measuring your dog to ensure his comfort when using the bed.

Choose a dog bed that will fit your dog's breed size. There are small dogs like the Chihuahua which is the smallest in the category and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier which is by far larger and heavier. Your dog breed is also important in determining which type of dog bed you are going to get.

While this type of bed can be ordered to match your home decor make sure you do not lose sight of the real reason why you are buying a dog bed. You may commit the mistake of buying a dog bed which will fit your space and will look fabulous in your home but the main consideration really is the comfort that it will provide for your dog.

Getting a designer bed for your dog can be fabulous but if it fails to provide comfort for your dog because he is not comfortable with it or for any reason at all then you would just be wasting precious money. Avoid this by making sure your designer dog beds do not only look great but it also fits your dog's needs.

Mammoth Dog Beds manufacture designer dog beds for larger breeds that come highly recommended. Made like furniture, the pillow supports up to 250lbs and lasts a lifetime. When shopping for a dog bed, make sure you Google them.

Best Dog Training Collar

In recent times, dog training videos have become increasingly helpful in showing dog owners how to hold their dogs by the collar without fear of harm to either their dog or themselves.

Quite a number of dog bites have come about as a result of 'collar-grabbing'. These collar-grab bites usually happen when the owner suddenly reaches for their dog's collar or collar regions, sometimes without any dog training intent on the dog owner's part.

What then happens is that the dog comes to associate being held by the collar with pain or discomfort.

This association can switch the dog into a defensive mode when an attempt is made to hold her by the collar. Some dogs don't bite but instead use defensive techniques such as playing "catch me".

It's best to begin your collar grab training while your dog is just a puppy. You must do all you can not to let your dog or puppy create a negative association in it's mind with collar grabbing.

Instead, seek to reassure your dog when reaching for it's collar with positive reinforcement.

1. Collar grab training should not be solely associated with the end of a play session. Do not fall into the pattern of only reaching for your pup's collar at the end of play time. This pattern will create an impression in your dog's mind that collar grabbing is bad and unwelcome because it always signals the end of play time.

What you should do instead is interrupt play time with collar grabbing every now and then and mix it up with some obedience training exercises like "sit" and "stand". Be sure to reward your dog generously at the end of each session.

This will create a positive connection in your dog's mind that says there is a reward associated with collar grab. Your frequent collar grabs during play time will now no longer signal end of play time but rather, time for refreshments or a quick timeout.

2. Collar grab training should not be associated with confinement. Animals by nature do not like to be confined. If you grab your puppy by the collar and lead or drag her to confinement, naturally she will come to associate the negative results of being confined to collar grab.

To create a positive atmosphere, associate confinement with something positive. An idea would be to throw some kibble or favorite chew toys into the confinement area. In no time at all, your pup will be happy to follow instructions to go to it's room or dog house.

3. Most of all, do not ever allow your dogs to associate collar grabbing as being a prelude to punishment and reprimand. Don't call your dog over only to scold her and grab her by the collar.

This will almost invariably result in your dog never wanting to come to you. The result is that your pup will grow into a dog that hates being collar grabbed and when she senses an attempt to grab her by the collar, she becomes evasive and offensive and might even resort to snarling and biting.

Following a good dog training video or program will help you prevent this from happening.

Some common dog training collars are: the prong collar, the Halti, the Gentle Leader, the choke collar and the electronic collar.

Prong Collar

This collar is made up of metal prongs that have been linked together. When you apply a pulling pressure to the collar (via the leash), it gives the dog a little pinch that is meant to duplicate the effect of a mother dog's teeth when she grabs here pup by the scruff of the neck.

The prong collar is a safe and effective training tool as long as the fit is correct and the collar is used appropriately. The prong collar should not be used if your dog is one to consistently yank at his leash.

The prong collar should fit snugly against the dog's neck. A properly fitted collar should leave approximately ½ of a finger space in between your dog's neck and the prong tip. A collar that is any looser than that won't do its job and will needlessly chafe the dog's skin.

Halti and Gentle Leader

Both the Halti and Gentle Leader head halter devices look a lot like the harnesses that are used to control horses. While the prong collar is designed to condition behavior and movement, the head halter is designed to restrict or restrain your dog's movements. The thought behind the halter's design is that if you can control the head, the body will follow its movement.

When you pull on the attached leash the device closes the dog's mouth and restrains his head. These types of collars are great for dogs that lunge, bite or display other aggressive behaviors.

There are drawbacks, however, to using a head halter device. Most dogs will not take very easily to any device that positions a strap over its nose. You may have to struggle with your dog many, many times before he will submit to wearing it.

Another drawback is that pulling at your dog's head makes it a lot more likely that you'll inadvertently injure the dog's neck or back. To avoid injury, you should always make sure you're restraining your dog in the correct manner.

Choke Collar

The choke collar is one of those dog training devices that is often surrounded by controversy. Proponents of the choke collar point to its humane effectiveness, while critics say that the collar is more torture device than training tool. The truth is that what the collar becomes is largely dependent upon who is using it.

A properly fitted choke collar works by tightening around the dog's throat when the trainer pulls on the leash and then releasing pressure when the trainer does. If the collar is not put on correctly, however, the pressure will remain and the dog could truly choke to death. These collars are not meant for dogs that consistently pull at their leash or for inexperienced trainers. As is the case with head halters, the choke collar has the potential to cause injury to the dog's neck.

Electronic Collar

Just mention the option of an electronic dog collar and many dog owners (even some people with no pets at all) will look at you as if you have suggested training your dog with a stun gun.

The reality is that electronic collars can be a very humane way to train a dog. As with any other training device, however, whether or not it is used for purposes of cruelty is totally dependent upon the intentions and experience of the trainer.

The electronic collar works by allowing the trainer to give the dog small, electric shocks (via remote control) in order to modify its behavior. The intensity of the shock is left to the trainer. In general, the setting should be strong enough to make the dog's ears twitch. If the dog howls or yelps when the shock is delivered, then the setting is too high. Again, the electronic collar should only be used by experienced trainers.

Dog Training Course

Dog training courses can mean the difference between having a happy dog and happy life - or not. Dogs are happier, healthier and safer when they have loving boundaries set for them and that's what dog training courses help you learn to set for your dog.

First let's take a look at the overall methods that dog training courses use. If you find a method that suits you best, you will know the type of course that will best for you and your dog.

Types of Dog Training Courses

Reward Training: Emphasizes positive reinforcement -- instead of punishing or yelling at your dog for what you don't want him to do, you reward your dog for doing what you want him to do. Rewards consist of praise and petting as well as treats. Treats are especially used in the early learning stages of a new behavior.

Dog Whispering: Dog Whispering is more of a general philosophy than a method. This is a more advanced method that should taken on by dog lovers who feel very confident in their connection with their dogs and are interested in learning about canine behaviors, motivation and body language.

Choke or Check Collar Training: Choke collars are collars that slip over a dogs head onto it neck and tighten down on the dogs neck when it pulls too hard on its leash. Choke collars were designed for professional trainers and for limited use - there is a health risk to your dog's neck and trachea when using them. In general, dog training courses that emphasize choke or check collar training are not recommended.

Prong Collar Training: Don't even think about this method. A prong collar has metal ends that stick into a dog's flesh and digs into its neck when it pulls on its leash. Inhumane period!

Head Collar Training: Very humane collar that gently redirects a dog's attention or the way you want him to go instead of punishing or hurting him as the two methods directly above do. Very effective especially when used with Reward Training.

Clicker Training: This method takes a hand-held clicker which, oddly enough, makes a "clicking" noise when squeezed. During clicker training, a dog is reinforced in behaviors with doggie treats paired with the clicking noise. At some point, the treats will be eliminated and the dog will know it has done something right simply by hearing the clicking noise. Very effective.

Electric Collar Training: As the name implies, this type of training involves your dog wearing a collar in which you are able to administer an electric shock to discourage certain behaviors. this method should only be used by professional trainers in the most extreme circumstances.

Ultrasonic Whistle Training: You know of the dog whistles that you can't hear but a dog can - right? This method uses these whistles to get your dog's attention as well as to train him. You will need to be trained in this method first.

The Mountain News and Crestline Courier-News invite their readers to post general comments in this section about story ideas, suggestions for improving the papers and/or other comments not related to a specific story. Thank you.

When finding a pet it is important to do the necessary research to ensure you find a good match. Different breeds are different temperaments and characteristics. Some dogs do well with children while others may be aggressive towards young kids. Here we have outlined a few common dog breeds to help you find the pet that is right for you and your family.

Doberman Pinscher

The Doberman Pinscher is a German breed that originated sometime in the late 19th century. It is suspected that this breed developed by crossing the Rottweiler, a Black and Tan Terrier, and a short-haired shepherd. This breed was developed as a guard dog. Today this breed is still used as a guard dog, however, they are also used for a companion dog, a guard dog, a watch dog, a defense dog, and a family dog.

This breed is very loyal and protective, however, they can be a bit too aggressive for some families, the elderly, and for the handicapped. If you plan on adding a Doberman Pinscher to your family you will want to make sure that both the dog and your family goes through proper obedience training. This will help you to maintain the dominant position in the household and prevent the dog from becoming overly aggressive with your family members.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a British breed that originated from the King Charles Spaniel breed. The British breeders achieved a longer face and a heavier build by crossing the King Charles Spaniel with a Cocker Spaniel. The resulting dog breed stands between 12 and 13 inches tall and weigh between 10 and 18 pounds. They come in a variety of color combinations including black and tan, ruby and white and Blenheim (chestnut and white and tan.)

To care for this breed you will need to brush their coat weekly. Like most breeds with long floppy ears you will need to check their ears regularly and make sure that they stay clean. This breed doesnÂ’t require a lot of exercise. You can keep them healthy by simply playing with them in the backyard or by taking them for a walk around the block once a day. Some of the health issues that you will need to keep your eyes open for include heart murmurs, patella luxation, ear infections, and eye conditions.

Siberian Husky

The Siberian Husky, also called the Arctic Husky, is a Russian breed that was developed as a sled dog. They are a working dog that requires both physical and mental stimulation to stay happy, healthy, and out of trouble. They are a medium sized dog that stands between 20 and 23.5 inches tall and they weigh between 35 and 60 pounds. They have a medium length thick coat that has a double layer. The outer layer is straight and smooth and the undercoat is dense and downy. They have a lot of color variations. However, having a white base with grey or red markings on their backs, around their eyes, and on their foreheads, is common.

Black and Tan Coonhound

The Black and Tan Coonhound, also referred to as the American Black and Tan Coonhound, is an American hunting dog breed. It is suspected that this breed originated when the Bloodhound, the American Foxhound and the English Foxhound were crossed. This dog usually stands between 23 and 27 inches tall, and it usually weighs in between 55 and 75 pounds. They have a dense coat of short hair that is black and tan.

To care for this breed you will need to brush their coat two to three times per week. Also, because they have long floppy ears you will need to check them daily and clean them as needed. This will help to prevent foul odors from developing and to prevent chronic ear problems. This dog requires a lot of space and a lot of exercise. They are not suited for apartment living or being kenneled. To keep this breed from wandering it will need to be socialized and trained as a puppy.

Papillon

The Papillon, also referred to as the Epagneul Nain and the Continental Toy Spaniel, is a toy breed that originated in France. This breed can be traced back to at least the 14th century. Today this breed is exclusively used as a pet.

The Papillon is a toy breed that stands between 8 and 11 inches tall and weighs between 3 and 9 pounds. They have no undercoat and their overcoat is long and silky. They come is several color combinations including lemon and white, white and red, chestnuts, mahoganies, black and white, and tricolored.

Collie

The Collie, also referred to as the Scottish Collie, is a Scottish breed that was developed as a sheepdog. They come in two varieties, rough and smooth. The Smooth Coated Collie has a medium length coat that is soft and dense. The Rough Coated Collie has short hair that is smooth. Both variations come in colors of blue merle, sable and white, and tri colored. This is a medium sized dog that typically stands between 22 and 26 inches tall.

The Collie has an excellent temperament that makes it ideal as both a family pet and as a working dog. They are very gentle and intelligent, and they enjoy being sociable. They are an excellent addition for homes with children and homes with other pets. Some of the health problems that are associated with breed include skin infections, eye problems and hip dysplasia.

Pug

The Pug, also called Mops or Carlin, is a toy breed that originated in China some where around 400 B.C. This small dog stands between 10 and 11 inches and weighs between 13 and 18 pounds. They have a short, glossy coat that comes in a variety of colors including fawn, black, silver and apricot. It is not uncommon for the Pug to also have a black face or muzzle mask. This is a healthy breed, but they are known for having problems with epilepsy.

Dog Training Aids

If the hearing of a dog is amazing then you can only describe the ability to use the sense of smell as incredible. Dogs can be taught to find people buried many feet under snow or collapsed buildings. They can detect gas leaks, sniff out drugs or explosives and can even sense when a cow is in season!

When a dog is on the scent his nose is very moist and the molecules forming the scent are dissolved into this mucus and transferred by the nerve receptors to the brain. How many time more powerful than our smell is often asked. Some professionals believe it could be as much as 10 million times better than our sense of smell.

Some people then ask, how can a dog get lost, it should always be possible for it to find the way home? The answer can be find if you compare the life of the wolf in the open countryside and the built up environment most dogs live in. The number of different smells being piled one on top of another in an urban environment makes it much more difficult to follow familiar scents. In the open countryside there are plenty of different smells but not the confusion caused by humans.

Dogs sense of smell can be affected by a number of different things such as illness; distemper, hepatitis, diabetes; by infections or obstructions in the nose and by ageing.

How can the sense of smell cause problems for us and our dog?

  • Dogs are attracted to smells we find obnoxious. My Golden Retriever loves to roll in any foul smelling substances she can find... and comes back looking as pleased as punch!
  • Smelling food on the table or in the kitchen might prove too tempting for your dog to resist. A compliment to the cook I would suggest.
  • Talking about the kitchen, rubbish bins often located there are sources of great smells for dogs to go and investigate. This can not always be sensible as some foods and objects in the rubbish might be dangerous for the dog.
  • Poison left around for rats and slugs might be very interesting but dangerous for the dog.

How can we use the sense of smell to improve our training
?

  1. The use of food and the dog's ability to smell and find it.
  2. Use strong smelling treats in training.
  3. Treats kept in pocket and then your hand going into the pocket will keep your dogs attention.

Most owners now about treats being used as a training aid. The finding of ways to use treats to encourage the behaviours we want is what we need to consider.

Choose A Dog Breed
David Gershon: Empowering a Climate Change Movement, Part 3: Instead of Cursing the Dark, Light a Candle
The purpose of a Cool Community campaign is to empower residents through local organizations across all sectors to reduce their carbon footprint by 25 percent through participation in the Low Carbon Diet program.

Being a dog owner can be one of the most rewarding things in life and can be even more rewarding if you choose the right dog breed. When you decide to bring a dog or puppy into the home you will soon realize what superb, loving and fantastic companions they will make for your family. However, if you choose the wrong breed of dog for your living situation, it can easily go the other way. Hopefully these quick tips will help you on your way to choosing the right dog for you.

Time and Exercise

Before even beginning your search for a dog, you need to first decide whether or not you have the time to devote to dog ownership. Dogs are extremely social animals and desire your companionship as much as, if not more than, you desire theirs. If your life is busy and hectic right now, dog ownership may not be for you.

For those of you that do live a busy life schedule, and are still determined to choose a dog, then going for a smaller dog breed will be much better than a larger dog breed. Smaller dog breeds, or less active dog breeds, will require less exercise to stay fit and healthy. One caveat you should be aware of is that not all small dog breeds are less active dogs, nor are all large dog breeds more active dogs.

Space and Comfort

The amount of living space you have and the amount of space you are prepared to allot for your dog is a major contributing factor in choosing the breed of dog for you. The most important factor to consider in regards to space is: How active is your dog going to be? If your living space is small, for instance, you may still choose a larger less active dog breed. In contrast, if you choose a highly active small dog breed, you will need to provide the space for them.

In addition to have the space for your dog to reach the activity levels he or she will require, you will also need to choose a dog breed that will live comfortably within your living arrangements. A couple of simple, yet often overlooked questions, one might ask themself when choosing a dog breed are: 'Do I intend on having my dog live outside, am I able to provide a dog house or other means of shelter?' and 'Do I have the extra living space to provide my new dog with his or her own area?'

Available Funds

Yep, money also is a contributing factor to choosing the right dog breed for you. Firstly, can you actually afford the dog itself? Some dog breeds are far more valuable, in a monetary sense, than others. A quick look through your local classifieds will easily inform you of the going rates of particular breeds in your area. Another place you can find information on the prices of dogs is a simple search on the Internet.

The more important things you need to take into consideration are whether you are going to be able to afford to buy dog food, pay for regular vet checkups, medicinal supplies, purchase necessary equipment such as leashes or kennels and grooming. Oh yeah, treats and toys too, dogs love treats and toys.

Every person's life is different and for every person the factors to consider for choosing a dog breed are different. In the end, the right dog breed for you to choose is the dog that best suits your life as it is now.

Choose A Dog Breed

Dog House Training

You spent half a dozen books on dog house training, enrolled your dog in obedience school, spent a fortune on dog biscuits --- and still, your dog refuses to follow your commands. Add to that, the dog still pees on your couch. Is your dog trying to wear your patience out?

No. Your dog didn't just wake up one morning and decided to make your life miserable. There is no such thing. It is just that complex commands are not something dogs are capable of responding to. Ultimately, dogs respond to straightforward emotions such as fear, sadness or happiness.

Through time, dogs are able to connect certain emotions to certain events. If an act is repeated, they can only draw an emotion from it. Suffice to say, not because you hit your dog for peeing on the carpet, it would retaliate and bite you. Instead, it could only express an emotion, such as, probably fear, when you hit it.

So say you have made a house training rule that your dog should only pee on the newspapers you set up by the door. But one time, you forgot and left newspapers on the living room floor. The next scene, you see your dog peeing on these newspapers. Now scolding or hitting your dog from doing so would confuse the house training you have already began. Your dog already has associated newspapers as the peeing area.

Remember not to punish your dog when he makes this mistake as fear may cause it to stop learning your rules. Instead, take care in formulating your commands and maybe next time; take care of leaving the newspapers in the designated area only.

So what do you do if your dog pees on your furniture? One thing is for sure --- do not throw a fit. Do not show that you are upset. Quickly take your dog outside or in another area and clean up the mess. In order that your dog does not repeat the incident, remove the smell completely. For dogs, their pee marks the area where they can repeat the act again and again. Vinegar is a good choice for removing the smell. Stay away from ammonia-smelling disinfectants since it mimics that smell of dog urine.

If after all these efforts and your dog still strikes your ire you might want to bring your dog to the veterinarian. Studies show that certain illnesses may affect your dog's response in house training.

Certain conditions can cause your dog to urinate or poop uncontrollably and therefore cannot meet your demands in dog house training.

Dog Toilet Training

Space is one of the most important factors you have to consider in building your beloved pet a house. There is really no exact size of space you have to make for your dog, roomy dog house won't be very attractive for them. What you have to do is make a room enough for your full-grown dog to walk in and out, turn around inside and stretch its body completely.

Then you have to consider the ventilation inside the dog house. In damp or cold season, dog's body heat keeps it warm and makes enough heat to warm its house, your dog's breath will steam up the house causing to form molds inside it. In hot season, good air ventilation will keep your dog from sweltering. To solve, making a vent on the top of the roof will do the job, just make sure you leave its door open or cover it loosely with blinkers.

When you build a dog house, make sure you place it off the ground. This does not only prevent the wood from rotting easily it also keeps your dog from lying on damp soil. Also make sure rain water can't enter to keep your dog from colds.

Don't use pressure-treated woods in building your dog house. It can stand longer against moist and rot compared to non pressure-treated wood, but it is infused with arsenic and heavy metal making it highly poisonous to pets especially to dogs that often scratches and bites on surfaces. You may use pressure-treated wood it but make sure your dog can't bite and tear the wood by using it to the house's base frame. When you do use pressure-treated wood, make sure you wear gloves and protective mask for its chemicals are harmful to humans too.

After your done building the house for your dog, always look for some improvements. You can add porch for your dog's comfort and for it to stay out of the sun and rain. Custom fit your dog house according to your dog's needs.

Protection Dog Training

A dog kennel or a dog run is an enclosed outdoor area, usually secured by a chain-link fence and gate, in which a canine is kept. The use of a kennel has become standard practise, especially among owners of working dogs and other large canines. However, while the use of a dog kennel certainly isn't terrible, it may not be the best solution for your canine.

When making your decision on whether or not to kennel your protection dog, you must take into consideration the natural behavior of a dog. Many people make the mistake of assuming that what feels natural to them as a human will be true of their canine. Unlike many humans, dogs are not claustrophobic. In fact, small enclosed environments that simulate natural dens make them feel protected and comfortable. However, while this applies to the dog house or crate where your canine will be spending his nights, it does not apply to the kennel or dog run where your canine may have to spend his days.

The ideal environment to keep your dog would be a large, fenced-off yard. Some kind of fence or enclosure is preferred, especially in rural environments, as it helps prevent other wild animals from wandering in. If your yard is not an option, a kennel may be the only other solution, but remember that bigger is always better. The more space you can give your canine, the happier and healthier it will be.

We at CCK9 don't believe in housing our Guard Dogs and Protection Dogs in the traditional method, which is to have dog kennels or dog runs. We feel that this creates erratic behavior in the dogs; they end up pacing back and fourth, and it creates a spinning effect. We at CCK9 prefer a more natural environment. That is why we give all of our Guard Dogs and Protection Dogs free range on our 105 acre state-of-the-art facility. This creates a much more balanced canine, and a much happier dog.
