Some common dog training collars are: the prong collar, the Halti, the Gentle Leader, the choke collar and the electronic collar.

Prong Collar

This collar is made up of metal prongs that have been linked together. When you apply a pulling pressure to the collar (via the leash), it gives the dog a little pinch that is meant to duplicate the effect of a mother dog's teeth when she grabs here pup by the scruff of the neck.

The prong collar is a safe and effective training tool as long as the fit is correct and the collar is used appropriately. The prong collar should not be used if your dog is one to consistently yank at his leash.

The prong collar should fit snugly against the dog's neck. A properly fitted collar should leave approximately Â½ of a finger space in between your dog's neck and the prong tip. A collar that is any looser than that won't do its job and will needlessly chafe the dog's skin.

Halti and Gentle Leader

Both the Halti and Gentle Leader head halter devices look a lot like the harnesses that are used to control horses. While the prong collar is designed to condition behavior and movement, the head halter is designed to restrict or restrain your dog's movements. The thought behind the halter's design is that if you can control the head, the body will follow its movement.

When you pull on the attached leash the device closes the dog's mouth and restrains his head. These types of collars are great for dogs that lunge, bite or display other aggressive behaviors.

There are drawbacks, however, to using a head halter device. Most dogs will not take very easily to any device that positions a strap over its nose. You may have to struggle with your dog many, many times before he will submit to wearing it.

Another drawback is that pulling at your dog's head makes it a lot more likely that you'll inadvertently injure the dog's neck or back. To avoid injury, you should always make sure you're restraining your dog in the correct manner.

Choke Collar

The choke collar is one of those dog training devices that is often surrounded by controversy. Proponents of the choke collar point to its humane effectiveness, while critics say that the collar is more torture device than training tool. The truth is that what the collar becomes is largely dependent upon who is using it.

A properly fitted choke collar works by tightening around the dog's throat when the trainer pulls on the leash and then releasing pressure when the trainer does. If the collar is not put on correctly, however, the pressure will remain and the dog could truly choke to death. These collars are not meant for dogs that consistently pull at their leash or for inexperienced trainers. As is the case with head halters, the choke collar has the potential to cause injury to the dog's neck.

Electronic Collar

Just mention the option of an electronic dog collar and many dog owners (even some people with no pets at all) will look at you as if you have suggested training your dog with a stun gun.

The reality is that electronic collars can be a very humane way to train a dog. As with any other training device, however, whether or not it is used for purposes of cruelty is totally dependent upon the intentions and experience of the trainer.

The electronic collar works by allowing the trainer to give the dog small, electric shocks (via remote control) in order to modify its behavior. The intensity of the shock is left to the trainer. In general, the setting should be strong enough to make the dog's ears twitch. If the dog howls or yelps when the shock is delivered, then the setting is too high. Again, the electronic collar should only be used by experienced trainers.

If the hearing of a dog is amazing then you can only describe the ability to use the sense of smell as incredible. Dogs can be taught to find people buried many feet under snow or collapsed buildings. They can detect gas leaks, sniff out drugs or explosives and can even sense when a cow is in season!

When a dog is on the scent his nose is very moist and the molecules forming the scent are dissolved into this mucus and transferred by the nerve receptors to the brain. How many time more powerful than our smell is often asked. Some professionals believe it could be as much as 10 million times better than our sense of smell.

Some people then ask, how can a dog get lost, it should always be possible for it to find the way home? The answer can be find if you compare the life of the wolf in the open countryside and the built up environment most dogs live in. The number of different smells being piled one on top of another in an urban environment makes it much more difficult to follow familiar scents. In the open countryside there are plenty of different smells but not the confusion caused by humans.

Dogs sense of smell can be affected by a number of different things such as illness; distemper, hepatitis, diabetes; by infections or obstructions in the nose and by ageing.

How can the sense of smell cause problems for us and our dog?

Dogs are attracted to smells we find obnoxious. My Golden Retriever loves to roll in any foul smelling substances she can find... and comes back looking as pleased as punch!
Smelling food on the table or in the kitchen might prove too tempting for your dog to resist. A compliment to the cook I would suggest.
Talking about the kitchen, rubbish bins often located there are sources of great smells for dogs to go and investigate. This can not always be sensible as some foods and objects in the rubbish might be dangerous for the dog.
Poison left around for rats and slugs might be very interesting but dangerous for the dog.

How can we use the sense of smell to improve our training
?

The use of food and the dog's ability to smell and find it.
Use strong smelling treats in training.
Treats kept in pocket and then your hand going into the pocket will keep your dogs attention.

Most owners now about treats being used as a training aid. The finding of ways to use treats to encourage the behaviours we want is what we need to consider.

Dog training, if you ask any pet owner or anyone who is an authority on dogs, is absolutely essential. The need to train your dog goes far beyond peeing or pooping in the house. It can mean a matter of life or death for your beloved canine companion.

An animal that bites is a danger and one that cannot be excused. The risks to neighborhood children are not worth the price of pet training obedience classes. If you find yourself unable to train your pet to behave around strangers, find a dog training class that can.

An aggressive canine that bites others is not tolerated by the law. You can find yourself fined and possibly losing your pet should it bite someone.

Dog training can also be used to teach an animal not to eat food unless it is given by the owner. Each year thousands of dogs undergo veterinarian attention due to poisoning.

There are many things we often do not consider as poisonous or dangerous that can mean life or death to a pet. Three of the most common harmful items found around most houses are: chocolate, anti-freeze and chicken bones.

Most people know that anti-freeze is toxic but often give their pet chocolate and chicken bones, both of which are harmful to dogs. The tiniest piece of chocolate can begin a terrible pattern that might result in poisoning due to theobromine.

Chicken bones splinter when bitten and can become lodged in a dog's mouth and windpipe resulting in choking. So in reality it is both human and dog behavior training.

You can love your pet by learning the essentials to dog training. It may be tough at times but it will be well worth it in the end. The animal will know the rules and the consequences of disobeying.

If you own a dog then you know how difficult your furry friend can be at times. However, with the proper training and a whole lot of patience, your dog can start behaving the way you want him to.

Before you start training your dog, there are several common mistakes that many people make when they begin training. I will be going over the top 3 most common mistakes, so pay attention!

1. Don't make it a habit of always "punishing" your dog when you call him. What I'm talking about is doing something to him that he doesn't enjoy. For example, it's not a good idea to call your dog and then clip his nails. Don't make it a habit of calling your dog and then tying him up. Make sure you occasionally call your dog just to talk to him in a cheerful voice, pet him, and tell him what a good dog he is. You don't want him to always associate bad things when you call for him, or he won't want to continue coming when you call!

2. Don't simply ignore your dog's bad behavior because you think he will eventually grow out of it, because he won't. Instead, make it a point to teach what is, and what is not, appropriate behavior.

3. Don't ever hit your dog or cause him physical pain as method of training. This will only make your dog aggressive, or at the very least, a submissive wetter. It's always more effective to reward your dog for good behavior instead of punishing him. After all, your dog's goal is to please you!
