Dog Training Help

It is that time of year. The Christmas pups are 16 to 24 weeks old. Now what do we do with him? The person on the other end of the phone begs for mercy. The calls are coming in and people are in a panic. With so many "ways" to train, which direction do you turn? TV shows have to sensationalize dog training to keep their ratings and anyone and their brother can call themselves a trainer. Look for someone that shares the same ideals and philosophies you do. Your new dog and family "coach" should have an education in the theory and process of learning and comprehension not just a "certificate" in dog training. They should have years of experience training and handling dogs and not just a person who needs extra money after their day job making pizzas. This is serious business. After all, this is the dog you will be keeping for the next fourteen years. Let us not mess his head up before he is even a year old.

I for one, am tired of hearing about the "pack", being the "leader" getting "control", showing him who is "boss" etc., etc. Yikes! What a bunch of control freaks! Dogs are perpetual toddlers. Show them, teach them, set them up for success, have limitations, boundaries and reasonable expectations and stick to it! Don not change the rules. Have all the members of the household participate in their education, follow a plan and live happily ever after. Sound too simple to be true? Dog training is crazy simple...it is teaching people how to behave that is difficult.

Get help with house training your pup. The process is not difficult but too lengthy to approach here. Patricia McConnell has a great little book, Way to Go, that really explains all the details. Google Patricia McConnell for more info. All of Trisha's books are great! Once you are on the right track with that, be reasonable with the length of time you expect your dog to stay by himself. Dogs by the way are not "pack" animals and there is plenty of scientific evidence to prove this. But, they do live in extended family groups. So that one is easy, they live in families just like us, so they understand our basic social structure. Providing your family is an emotionally healthy unit all should go well. Let us talk about being the "leader". How about being a good "parent"? A good parent is not a bully, does not go around controlling and intimidating and certainly tries to provide a healthy environment. So, set the pups up to be right, do not place them in an area where they will constantly be able to get in to trouble and be yelled at for every step they take.

Provide a "baby" safe area, such as the kitchen for the pup to play with his toys. Everything on the floor is his. Pick up your things. Now is not the time to teach him "No" because you are too lazy to pick up your shoes and socks. Interact with him, play with him, pet him and when you are finished, put him back in his crate or out of doors if he is not completely house trained. If your house has an open floor plan and is too hard to section off for the pup, then the pup should wear a harness and a "drag line". The line can be an inexpensive piece of clothes line or the like. Cut the line about twelve feet in length and tie it to the harness. The pup can now go about the house with you. The line prevents him from getting into trouble. You still should be playing and interacting with him, distracting him away from trouble. Prevention is not the cure, but it will teach him the right way to live in your house while you are teaching him puppy obedience exercises. Make sure he gets enough "doggie play time" and not just walking....slowly next to your side, under control. BORING! UGH! Dogs travel at a much faster pace than we humans do. They naturally want to hustle and move out at a nice trot. We need to save that thought for another article. Play time should be out of doors. Don not rough house in doors if you expect your pup to have "house manners". All the chase games, ball tossing and in general "fly around and be crazy" should be out of doors games. If your pup starts to "boogy butt" in the house, tell him, "Not inside" and take him out and play with him until he is tired. Go back in side and expect him to settle.

Hope that helps. Until next time, hug the pup and remember how much you wanted that little guy!

Dog Training Books

Not too long ago I was at a book signing in Meriden, CT. While I was there, I received a lot of positive feedback about my new book, The Amazing Dog Training Man. One of the trainers that attended did ask me about the Spring Loaded Recall Exercise. In case you haven't read the book, The Spring Loaded Recall Exercise is how I teach the Come Command.

Personally, I hate having my dogs on leash. A dog that can be allowed off leash has a better life and will usually be more emotionally stable and physically fit. So let me share the secret of teaching your dog to come when called. Would you like to know the secret? You would? Here it is: Teaching your dog to come when called is a game. The more fun you make the game the better your come command will be. The best game to start with is the Spring Loaded Recall Exercise.

You see, most dogs live a big part of their lives on leash, in a fenced in yard, in a house, in a crate and so on. When your dog gets a taste of freedom the last thing they want to do is come back to you. It's party time when they get off leash. If we can make you, the owner, fun and exciting it is very easy for the dog to come back to you. If on the other hand you are boring, your dog will not come when called. So let's do the Spring Loaded Recall Exercise. Here is how it is done.

First you'll need a friend to help you. Your friend is going to put your dog on leash, please don't use a choke or prong collar for this exercise. While your friend is holding the leash you are going to get your dog real excited. Don't be afraid to get a little goofy here; wrestle with your dog, jump up and down, clap your hands until your dog is straining and pulling on the leash.

At that point run about 30 feet away from your dog and crouch down. As soon as you crouch down loudly say your dog's name and the command come. At that point your friend should let go of the leash. If you got your dog excited enough, your dog should make a bee line straight for you. Once your dog gets to you quickly, reward your dog.

If you are not sure what your dog is going to do, please practice this exercise in a fenced in area or with a long line on your dog.

This is how you start to lay the foundation for the Come Command. It is one of the most important commands you'll teach your dog. Take the time to teach and practice this command. You and your dog will be much happier.

Best Dog Training Book

Almost all dog owners agree that a barking dog is a good protection and an outstanding burglar alarm, but you need the ability to control the barking. If you don't educate your dog to bark only at the appropriate times (fire alarms, noise outside the window and when approached by strangers), your neighbors are likely to resent your best friend, and you because you fail to control your dog.

Not all dog owners want their dogs to stop barking completely, but many want to be able to control their barking dog, and to know that when the dog is barking is because of something that really deserves the owner's attention. A barking dog is an annoying dog only when the owner can't control the barking or when the dog barks excessively for everything and at every little thing or object.

This article will not only show you how to stop your dog from barking, but also how to train your dog to bark on command. You can find, in almost all dog training books or in almost dog training videos how to stop your dog from barking. There are multiple dog training advices on this matter, but it is not only important to stop your dog from barking, but also to teach your dog to bark when you want him to. Some trainers recommend a dog shocking collar, but below I am going to share with you a very effective method, that only uses positive reinforcement, which is the best way to train your dog.

If you desire your dog to become security for you, teach him the "guard" command rather than "speak" command, a trespasser or somebody who's endangering you'll not know precisely how much your dog knows about "guard" and it's an excellent deterrent. This command doesn't mean that your dog will in reality attack somebody, but the barking can be an effective prevention for your safety both inside and outside your home.To instruct your dog to "guard or speak" tie his leash to a fence or some other immobile item. Stand approximately 3 feet aside and tease him with a toy or food, when he starts to bark, reward him.

Now put the food and toy aside and change the treat to verbal praise once he starts to bark. The command "guard or speak" should be given as soon as the dog barks, the timing is crucial here, observing his body language, you'll be able to tell when he's ready to bark.Once he becomes mindful of the "guard" command, give the "quiet" command when he's barking; give the reward as soon as he has stopped barking, this is really important. If the barking continues, give strong "no" command.

When he's successfully learned the command, move farther away and continues the training, he needs to know and react to these commands from whatever distance.Once this training is successful, untie him from the fence and continue to train him the commands "guard" and "quiet".

Trust me, you and your neighbors will appreciate this training when they've a peaceful night, and they'll learn that if your dog is barking, there's something wrong.

Security Dog Training

Online Home Jobs. Solid Gold. Grab the bull by the horns and set yourself up for security on YOUR terms before someone in some head office decides that you are too expensive to keep around.

"Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will gain neither and lose both."

- Benjamin Franklin

The world is in more chaos than it has ever been. Employees are at the mercy of every change in the political or business climate. Change is everywhere yet few people try to adapt to it. I compliment you on your seeking another way.

Online home jobs are a new phenomena. If you have access to the internet and own a computer (even an old clunky one that freezes up), you can successfully build security for yourself and your loved ones working from home.

What jobs are available? Just about anything you like. There is a key issue. Unlike when you were on the pavement looking for work, decide now that you are going to do work that you LOVE. Do it for you.

If you love flowers, start looking for online work for a florists association or flower growers. If you love old books, look for work with book sellers, book dealers, publishers or authors. And so.

Where to find these jobs?

The best tool I have ever found are called forums. They are all over the internet and are chock full of people discussing, complaining, raving and exchanging experience on just about anything.

If you love to train dogs, let's say, go to a dog training forum. Do a web search by entering the following information exactly as shown including the quotation marks: "dog training+forums". I just did a search on dog training and 16,800 forum responses. Some of the results are: Puppy and dog forums, Gun dog and bird training forum, K9 obedience dog training and so on. The people you will contact are experienced. The greatest advantage I have ever seen is that these folks can come up with the darndest new ideas on the subject you were thinking of.

What is needed to start? Basic typing skills are required and a place to work in your home. If the online home jobs you will be getting require that you use the phone, you will need either a very quiet room to work in or the co-operation of family members to be quiet while you are doing business.

If your typing is a little slow, work on making it faster. As your speed increases many companies will pay a little extra because you are producing more.

"If you want total security, go to prison. There you're fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking... is freedom."

- Dwight D. Eisenhower

What hazards are there regarding online home jobs?

1. When you have decided on which companies to approach, go online or by phone to your local Better Business Bureau and get whatever information they have. Any scams out there will be recorded with them.

2. By far the best source of information regarding hazards are the people who have done a particular kind of work or have done work for a particular company. That takes you back to the forums again. You cannot place a price on human experience.

If you really want to earn serious income from your kitchen table in your underwear (I recommend closing the curtains!), click on Online Home Jobs where I will explain to you more about the internet and introduce you to a massive free library of instantly downloadable FREE ebooks. No information will be asked of you, not even your email address! I promise.

If your REALLY SERIOUS about creating your own job at home, I recommend this page on my site: Work From Home.

Dog Training Ebook

A mistake many dog owners make is to not train their dog to give back a toy when commanded. This can lead to a dog that is aggressive when it has toys, as it refuses to give and wants to warn anyone that comes near that the toy is its alone. Training your dog to retrieve an object is also a great way to give it exercise, as games of fetch can burn off a lot of energy.

Choose one of your dogs favourite toys that will get its attention quickly. You will probably want the dog on a lead at this point so you have more control, then you can build up to further distances and no lead once the dog has an idea of what the commands mean.

Next, throw the object a short distance away so the dog can reach it while still on the lead. As soon as you throw the object say the command "fetch", it is important to say it once every time so your dog begins to understand what it means.

When the dog picks up the object, get it to come to you. Encourage the dog as it comes back by crouching down. Now take the object out of the dogs mouth using a command such as "give", although you can choose whatever you like a long as it is simple and concise. Once this has been completed it is a good idea to get the dog to sit in anticipation of a repeat.

Do you want to train your dog like a professional? A top quality dog training ebook can be found here.
