Dog Training Collar Reviews

Fixing a break in your Invisible Dog Fence or Underground Dog Fence is cheap and easy. You will periodically get breaks in the boundary line of your dog fence. You will know that the line is broken because the dog fence transmitter unit attached to your house will signal an error by either a flashing red light or a beeping noise. You will also notice that your dog's receiver collars no longer work and will not beep when you take them over the boundary line.

The boundary wire for your underground dog fence needs to make a complete loop, beginning and ending at the transmitter unit. When you get a break in the loop the signals cannot get through and the unit stops working. Our job is to find the break in the boundary wire and fix it. Before you start you need to remove the receiver collars from your dogs.

Here are the tools you will need for this DIY voyage:

  1. One 100 µH RF Choke (available from Radioshack (catalog number 273-102)) - $1.39
  2. One waterproof wire nut (available from most home improvement or hardware stores) - $0.39
  3. One AM radio - any portable AM radio will do, tuned to 600.
  4. One pair of scissors
  5. One Shovel or anything else you can dig with

Time: 30 minutes

There are two ways to find the break, we start with the easiest way:

Finding a Break by Visual Inspection

Most breaks are caused by someone running an edger, aerator or otherwise digging through the boundary wire. These breaks can usually be found by walking along where the boundary wire runs and looking for spots where there has been recent digging. Unearth the wire in these spots and check for damage. The most likely spots are where the boundary wire crosses your driveway or pathways. Also check that the boundary wire is properly connected to the transmitter box.

If you found the break, proceed to the section on fixing the break. If not, proceed to the following section where we will show you how to use an RF Choke to make the boundary wire 'sing' and reveal the location of the break to you.

RF Choke Method

The RF Choke will make your boundary wire 'sing.' We will be able to listen to this sound with the AM radio you have tuned to 600 and will be able to find the break by looking for the part of the wire that is not singing.

First switch off the transmitter box. Now, disconnect the two boundary wire leads that connect to the box. In their place, connect the two legs of the RF choke. Now turn the transmitter box back on. The transmitter box should no longer be signalling that there is an error.

Now turn the transmitter box back off. Take the two boundary wires and wrap an insulated section of each wire around different legs of the RF choke. Now turn the transmitter box back on. The transmitter should still signal that there is no error. Rotate the knob labeled "field width" on the transmitter box clockwise till it is at full power.

Now turn on the radio tuned to AM 600, and walk along the boundary wire. When you hold the radio near the boundary wire it should make a deep pulsing/throbbing noise, like Ugh-Ugh-Ugh-Ugh-Ugh ... As you move the radio closer and further away from the boundary wire you will notice that there are some distances where the sound is louder and some distances where it gets quieter. As you walk around the boundary you will find a spot where there is no sound coming from the AM radio irrespective of whether you move the radio closer or further from the boundary wire. This is where you should dig up the wire and look for the break. It will be within three yards of the quiet spot

Now that you have done the hard part let's fix the break

Fixing the Break

Use the scissors to strip the wire on each side of the break in the boundary wire. Now insert the two stripped sections into the wire nut and gently twist until you start to get a bit of resistance from the wire nut. Now we will test to see if you have fixed the problem.

Return to the transmitter unit and turn off the power. Disconnect the RF choke legs and reconnect the boundary wire. Power back on the transmitter and there should be no error signal. If there is an error signal, look for another break, it is possible that there was more than one. If there was no error signal, bury the boundary wire you dug up. Reset the "field width" knob on the transmitter box to it's original setting and you are done. Congratulations you just saved yourself a house call from the local Underground Dog Fence company and a large bill!

Dog Breed Comparison
The larger the paw, the larger the footprint
In the mountains, a 4x4 SUV is almost a necessity if you plan to drive when it’s snowy. But if you live almost anywhere else, the “gas guzzlers” are a target of green scorn.

Looking for a design that's chic and at the same time unconventional? Try your luck at animal jewelry. Far from being tacky or inelegant, animal designs are actually rather distinctive. Finely crafted jewelry with animal motifs lends a mysterious air to the person who wears them.

Graceful jewelry patterns can be achieved with animal motifs. Dolphins, snakes, swans, and other beautiful beings of nature depict naked beauty and mysticism, and including images of them in jewelry inspires this "look." Moreover, the carnal appeal of wearing nature-themed jewelry should not be bypassed; sporting nature-themed accessories speaks of someone who is in tune with an "inner animal." If we're going to talk sex appeal -- well, animal jewelry may just be an understated way to achieve it!

Animal jewelry is also a great way of encouraging environmental awareness and love of nature -- even among children. A child who has a favorite pet may appreciate having animal jewelry to remind him or her of that pet. In fact, if the pet were domesticated enough to sport a little jewelry as well -- like a cat or a dog -- it might be great if master and pet could have matching pieces! Like a pendant for the collar for Poochie, which could also be worn as a bracelet charm for Nancy.

In fact, not only children would appreciate jewelry that would remind them of favorite pets. If one had a favorite animal, a pet, a totem spirit or just an animal with whom s/he identifies with, a piece of charm jewelry would be a great gift. An accessory that reminds one of a pleasant thought is always something that makes one glow.

The inner strength one derives from inspiring motifs is one of the best things about animal jewelry; when a person is calmed or energized by the sight of a familiar animal, it affects one's mood and the way one looks at things. In fact, Native American tradition believes that animals can give you strength and guidance. Jewelry symbolizing these animals may serve as a reminder for someone who desires to be stronger in one particular aspect. For example: the dragonfly symbolizes illusion, the deer symbolizes gentleness, the bear means power, and so forth.

A person may select his/her ensemble based on his/her philosophies, or simply the feelings of the moment. A person who wishes to give another the gift of animal jewelry may consider which particular animal/s the recipient brings to mind. This requires a personal touch, and this in itself makes the act of selecting animal jewelry a cherished moment indeed!

Dog Training Help

It is that time of year. The Christmas pups are 16 to 24 weeks old. Now what do we do with him? The person on the other end of the phone begs for mercy. The calls are coming in and people are in a panic. With so many "ways" to train, which direction do you turn? TV shows have to sensationalize dog training to keep their ratings and anyone and their brother can call themselves a trainer. Look for someone that shares the same ideals and philosophies you do. Your new dog and family "coach" should have an education in the theory and process of learning and comprehension not just a "certificate" in dog training. They should have years of experience training and handling dogs and not just a person who needs extra money after their day job making pizzas. This is serious business. After all, this is the dog you will be keeping for the next fourteen years. Let us not mess his head up before he is even a year old.

I for one, am tired of hearing about the "pack", being the "leader" getting "control", showing him who is "boss" etc., etc. Yikes! What a bunch of control freaks! Dogs are perpetual toddlers. Show them, teach them, set them up for success, have limitations, boundaries and reasonable expectations and stick to it! Don not change the rules. Have all the members of the household participate in their education, follow a plan and live happily ever after. Sound too simple to be true? Dog training is crazy simple...it is teaching people how to behave that is difficult.

Get help with house training your pup. The process is not difficult but too lengthy to approach here. Patricia McConnell has a great little book, Way to Go, that really explains all the details. Google Patricia McConnell for more info. All of Trisha's books are great! Once you are on the right track with that, be reasonable with the length of time you expect your dog to stay by himself. Dogs by the way are not "pack" animals and there is plenty of scientific evidence to prove this. But, they do live in extended family groups. So that one is easy, they live in families just like us, so they understand our basic social structure. Providing your family is an emotionally healthy unit all should go well. Let us talk about being the "leader". How about being a good "parent"? A good parent is not a bully, does not go around controlling and intimidating and certainly tries to provide a healthy environment. So, set the pups up to be right, do not place them in an area where they will constantly be able to get in to trouble and be yelled at for every step they take.

Provide a "baby" safe area, such as the kitchen for the pup to play with his toys. Everything on the floor is his. Pick up your things. Now is not the time to teach him "No" because you are too lazy to pick up your shoes and socks. Interact with him, play with him, pet him and when you are finished, put him back in his crate or out of doors if he is not completely house trained. If your house has an open floor plan and is too hard to section off for the pup, then the pup should wear a harness and a "drag line". The line can be an inexpensive piece of clothes line or the like. Cut the line about twelve feet in length and tie it to the harness. The pup can now go about the house with you. The line prevents him from getting into trouble. You still should be playing and interacting with him, distracting him away from trouble. Prevention is not the cure, but it will teach him the right way to live in your house while you are teaching him puppy obedience exercises. Make sure he gets enough "doggie play time" and not just walking....slowly next to your side, under control. BORING! UGH! Dogs travel at a much faster pace than we humans do. They naturally want to hustle and move out at a nice trot. We need to save that thought for another article. Play time should be out of doors. Don not rough house in doors if you expect your pup to have "house manners". All the chase games, ball tossing and in general "fly around and be crazy" should be out of doors games. If your pup starts to "boogy butt" in the house, tell him, "Not inside" and take him out and play with him until he is tired. Go back in side and expect him to settle.

Hope that helps. Until next time, hug the pup and remember how much you wanted that little guy!

Dog Training Program

Generally, people think that well trained dogs are much Improved friend as judge against to untrained dogs. If you also think this, then you will be happy to know that skilled dogs behave better in family and friends. Once your dog knows that you are his boss, he would cheerily follow you and act upon your orders. much people like dog training program for their dogs so as to make them be trained obedience, but the finest part is that you can teach your dog yourself without the help out of any professional trainer. Nevertheless, if your dog is taking orders from a dog trainer and it is not able to make out correctly, then it is Totally your error. Just like owners, dogs also feel happy when their owner is happy with them.

While training your dog, initial vital thing that you should keep in mind is to know about your pet's manners. Getting familiar with the dog's behavior Assist it to raise well, both mentally and physically. You should take care of all the behavior of your dog and should work upon them little by little and in an simple manner. Expecting your pet to achieve the orders and following them immediately would be Incorrect, as every pet has its own power to learn things. besides, making your dog be trained by using modes is not a way to turn your pet into a disciplined family dog. If your dog constantly keeps on trying to get your attention, jumps on the friends, dribbles or even licks them, then your pet does not need any hard line method to be controlled because it just need to make you understand, ", Here I am, Love me always". If your dog is a puppy, do not try to exceed its puppy training stage, as dogs normally get bored and occasionally also get irritated with extended training sessions. Common training for five or ten minutes is plenty to make your dog be trained whatever you want. Not just this, when it performs well and obeys you immediately, you should admire him and give some prize. Dog biscuits can be a good alternative while praising dogs.

Persistence is the most excellent way to make your dog a fully trained pet. If you patiently wait for its response, it would absolutely respond at your order and will follow whatever you say. During the training sessions and after or before the sessions all the time admire your dog, pat on its back, give it reward treats on doing well and by no means use hard line methods while instructing. Training can be began with simple orders like sit, down, stay, come and more. Your dog will all the time go after you and your orders, if treated with patience and love. A dog adores its trainer when it feels that the boss also loves it the similar way. Dogs learn very quickly, if trained properly and you can also make your dog learn by following these simple guidelines. Dogs are the most faithful companions of humans, if treated properly and loved always, so always care for your pet dog.

Dog Training Tools

Most people have one of two opinions about dog bathing.  Some believe that dogs only need to be washed every year or so.  Others believe that they should bathe their pets once a month.

Bathing is really good for dogs, but it may cause problems if you do it too much.

This is because dogs have natural skin and fur oils, the same way that people do.  If you bathe your dogs too frequently, their skin will become dry and itchy.  This creates a risk of scratching and breaking skin.  Remember that the natural oils really are beneficial, and that they protect your dog from many things.

With care, you can make bathing entertaining for you and your pet.  Just watch for a few things.

1. It's important to provide protection for your dog's ears.  Soap and water, if they get into the ear canal, can cause significant infections.  This is often temporary, but infections can cause real damage, up to and including deafness.  If you think your dog may have an ear infection, look for frequent head shaking and discharge from the ears to be sure.

To make sure that this doesn't occur, all you need to do is use cotton balls to stop your dog's ears.  Never force these into the ear canal - just place them securely at the entrance of the ear, keeping water out.  Once the bath is over, dry the ears to keep moisture out - a finger wrapped in a cloth works well.  If you decide to use a cotton swab, make sure you don't put it too deeply into the ear canal, since it could damage the ear drum.

2. Remember to use a shampoo that's been made for dogs, since they're formulated to protect the fur and skin of your pet.  Soaps made for humans are often harsh or irritating, plus dogs may be allergic to the scents used in them.

3. The frequency with which you bathe your dog will depend on the breed you have.  Dogs with long hair need to be washed more often than breeds that have short hair. That means that if you have a hairy breed, such as a spaniel, you may need to bathe as often as once every two months.  Other breeds could go as long as eight months, but outdoor dogs will probably need more frequent bathing.

Start your dog off the right way when it comes to bathing - patience and compassion are extremely important.  Scaring your dog will make the entire process more difficult.  Dogs enjoy being wet, and may enjoy running into lakes and rivers or having water sprinkled on them.

Set the bath up outside when you can, and encourage your pet to run through it.  Distract your pet from the water with a toy or two, and once your pet calms down, you can start the bath.  Some people use a leash to keep their dog from running off.

When you bathe your pet, get the shampoo, towel, soap and other tools together early, and avoid using the hose.  Water from the garden hose is usually too cold.  Use a bowl with water from the bath instead - it'll be warmer.

If you teach your dog that bathing is to be enjoyed, you and your pet will enjoy the next session.

It's also important to look into the right dog training tools to make sure your pooch behaves like you want him or her to.

Obedience Training For Dogs

When is the best time to start obedience training puppies? Puppies are ready to learn from about 10 weeks of age. You should start with the very basics, and not expect too much from your little pooch too soon.

Puppies are babies, just like children, so keep this in mind when you start obedience training puppies. It should not be all "business", you should definitely include plenty of playtime or your little pooch will not listen when you try to teach it some commands.

One of the most important thing about obedience training puppies is to make it fun. Do not yell at your pet or be negative. Positive reinforcement and praise are the best ways to teach a pet a new behavior.

Here are the basic things you should be doing with your puppy:

1. Immediately from when you get your little pooch home, you should regularly bathe and brush him. Trim his nails and brush his teeth. Put a collar on him and attach a leash. This will get your pet used to the idea of being handled and also lets him know who is boss.

2. When you feed your puppy, take his food dish away several times. This will teach him to not be aggressive when he is eating his food.

3. Socialization is very important. Take your pet puppy out for a walk where you will encounter other dogs. Allow your pet to explore those dogs and play with them, if possible. Make sure your pet's vaccinations are up to date.

4. When your puppy is about 1 month old, you can start to teach him simple things like "come", "sit", "wait", "don't touch".

5. Teach your little pooch not to bite. If your pet nips or bites you, you should have a toy ready in your other hand to put in their mouth and then praise them.

Obedience training puppies requires a great deal of patience and love. Never get angry with your pet or hit your pet. Make sure that you spend a great deal of time playing with your pet and never leave it alone with small children.

As your puppy grows older, it is ready to learn more complicated commands. Around the five-month mark, you can teach your pet manners with commands such as "off", "stand", "down" and "stand". Never use punishment as a training method. Any good training method uses rewards to motivate your dog to behave.

Advanced Dog Training

There is such a wide range of dog training books, picking the right one for you and your dog can be confusing. Some aspects of these books need to be considered before you make the decision to buy an expensive training book. Keep these things in mind when you go shopping for your training book.

The first question you should ask yourself is exactly what you are hoping to accomplish with the dog training. The greatest dog training books out there are the ones that work on creating a meaningful connection between you and your pet. Your highest ambition should be to create such a connection, and not be simply concentrating on training your dog.

It's really important that you be aware of what "method" that each of the various dog training books use before you decide to purchase it. Some methods work better than others, and some don't work at all. When considering the methods and choosing one, there are several things you should keep in mind. A few things you need to think about when deciding upon which technique you will employ are:

• Has this method been successful for anyone?

• Is this particular method easy to understand or too complicated?

• Do you feel comfortable with these techniques and will you be able to use them?

• How will your own dog react to these techniques?

• What incentives do they require you to offer to your pet?

• Do they continually use treats and praise incentives, or do they include affirmative reinforcement techniques?

• Is there additional training equipment such as clickers or collars that you will need to purchase and how expensive will that equipment be?

The experience level should also be taken into consideration when choosing the right book for dog training. For a puppies and untrained dogs, look specifically for books that are written for these beginners. But you can also find advanced books for dogs that already have basic training. Remember, we're not talking about just your dog's level of experience you will be taking into consideration, but your own level, too. For those who are somewhat new at training dogs, some of the more complicated methods and advanced techniques for learning tricks might end up confusing both of you.

Be sure to take your dog's breed into consideration when you are choosing a dog training book. Purebred dogs will sometimes have certain quirks that are specific to each of the breeds. These quirks are acknowledged and discussed in a lot of the more breed specific books. However, you'll notice that purebreds are not the only dogs that have specialized books about them. There are dog training books geared to specific mixed breed dogs as well. It's important to know that mixed breeds, or those with questionable parentage, are not shut out of the loop.

When you're considering purchasing any book, checking out customer reviews is always a good idea. Customers who have already purchased and tried the methods offered in the book are a good source of information. They can give you invaluable information on what works or not, and how worthwhile the advice on dog training really was. These comments are completely based upon the user's personal experience, so you can figure out which techniques are better than others simply by reading quite a few reviews.

The last suggestion is to talk to people you know. Go talk to people who already have dogs, and see what they would recommend as good dog training books for you. If nothing else, this information may give you either a starting point for choosing a training book for your dog, or may help you narrow down a list that is too extensive. In addition, you will learn what techniques were effective and which ones were not. Just remember the most important part is that you and your dog find a type of training that fits both of you well.

Chances are that you have at least once stumbled upon a website or advertisement proclaiming that your pet's commercial dog food is wholly inadequate, or worse, killing your dog. These internet smear campaigns started shortly after the dog food recall scare in 2005 due to Aflotoxins in a variety of pet foods. Aflotoxins are produced by a fungus, and in this case the fungus was growing on a bad batch of corn, which unfortunately was used in a shipment of pet food.

The company, which shall remain nameless, failed to comply with standard internal quality control and testing procedures, which resulted in the illness and death of over 100 dogs, and 1 cat. The company as since cleaned up its act, and other companies followed suit by strengthening their quality control measures.

As a result, our pet's food supply is safer, and healthier than it has ever been. Dogs are living much longer than they had just a decade ago, and much of this longevity can be attributed to the great strides made in animal nutrition. One of the lesser known reasons for the overcrowding of animal shelters is that people's pets are living much longer than they used to, and as a result, they adopt new dogs less frequently.

Critics will argue that if the food is so nutritious, then why do they have to spray it after processing to give it more nutritional value?

The answer is simply that micro-nutrients, such as vitamin-a for example, must be added evenly to the food and in precise and minute quantities. They are added in such a manner to ensure that every morsel is as nutritionally balanced as the next.

The only caveat to the commercialization of dog food is that there are loopholes in the regulation of dog food brands that are only sold instate. If the manufacturer does not ship his pet food product across state lines, then his product is not has heavily regulated as some of the larger, nationwide brands.

Companies will not profit from killing their clients pets. They want nothing more than for your pets to live for decades, so that you continue to purchase their product on a regular basis. As terrible as that may sound, it is the truth. It is the motivation behind the rapid advances in animal nutrition in recent years. There is no "dog food conspiracy".

Dog Training Class

People who have never owned a dog cannot fully understand the benefit of such a relationship. While they viewed as a pet to others, to those who love them, dogs become furry members of the family. Their pack-oriented nature makes them highly social and receptive to human contact. The human dog relationship is a special and unique one.

Where else can you find unconditional love? You may punish your dog, but he or she will not look at you any differently five minutes later. A canine is one best friend you never have to worry about having arguments with and they will never talk about you behind your back. They are equally as excited to see you the seventh, seventeenth, and seven millionth time. The relationship with your dog should be nurtured and given time and attention. Your dog would certainly do the same for you!

Positive dog training is an excellent option for keeping your pet and family happy and your belongings safe. While a dog can be a healthy addition to your home, improper care and lack of good dog training can turn your sweet little couch potato into a destructive demon. Avoid these issues before they begin by putting time in to strengthening the relationship with your dog through training.

You may be very limited on time. Do not worry. Easy dog training does not require hours put in. You may find the time goes by quickly. Each session may become a fun and exciting time for you and your pet. If done properly, dog training at home can feel less like a chore and more like a hobby.

Even if you choose a more formal method of training your dog, such as taking an obedience class, the experience will benefit you both. Your dog learns to love, respect, and pay attention to you. These three factors combined can make the entire training process far easier. In turn, you will learn a better appreciate for your dog's unconditional love and unique personality. In the end, whether you train at home, at a class, or at a park, you will enjoy a bond that only human and canine can share.

There are two main things used for positive reinforcement. These both work regardless of whether you are large or small dog training. The first is positive reinforcement through food. Just about every dog loves to eat. Some may be fussier than others are, so learn what your dog's favorite treats are and use that information to your advantage. Most respond very well to food and tend to learn quickly when expecting a treat reward. This may be beneficial as you start with basic commands that require only one or two steps to be developed.

Food rewards can have negative effects when not used properly, especially as you move into more complicated advanced dog training. Over feeding your dog can lead to obesity and other health problems. Make sure you are rewarding with a healthy treat, and only when the reward was earned.

Praise is a second reward option. This is a wonderful way to tell your pet "good job" without any risk of overfeeding. Some dogs may not be as receptive to this as they might a food reward, but stick to it and they will learn! Also, remember, it is more difficult once they become accustomed to a constant food reward, to switch to praise. Consider staring out with praise, or a mix of the two. Keep your canine companion on his toes by randomly switching the reward. Praise a few times then treat for a big accomplishment. It will keep him or her working hard for the prize!

Natural dog training does not have to be a difficult process. With patience, consistency and understanding, you and your pet will develop a strong bond. In the meantime, you will keep your possessions safe from a destructive dog with nothing else to preoccupy his or her mind. An obedient dog is also much easier to take with you in public or other social situations. Work on training so that you can include your beloved pet in many fun family events. Dog training can greatly enhance the relationship with your dog!
