Therapy Dog Training

Would you believe that you can now use your dogs fat as a treatment for arthritis? Sounds crazy but it is true. New technology in veterinary medicine exists that is bringing stem cell therapy using fat to dogs as a way to treat arthritis.

Stem cells are primitive, undifferentiated cells within the body. They have the ability to change into any type of tissue within the body such as bone, tendon, cartilage, muscle, nerve, etc. When we talk about stem cells, we group them into two types, embryonic and adult. Embryonic stem cells are the controversial ones since they come from fetal tissue and they have the ability to create an entire person or animal. Adult stem cells are cells that are found in almost every type of tissue in the body and have the capability to differentiate into any type of tissue but not an entire person or animal.

Although embryonic stem cells are extremely powerful, they do have some disadvantages associated with trying to use them. One is trying to get them since they come from fetal tissue and their use is highly controversial. The second problem with using them is that because they are from another person or animal, they are considered foreign material and the body may reject them. Adult stem cells, although not as powerful, have the advantages that they are easy to obtain, and because they come from the same person that is receiving them, there is no chance of rejection by the body.

In dogs, we are using technology to obtain adult stem cells from fat tissue and then use these cells as a treatment for osteoarthritis. In studies, with a single injection, some dogs are showing dramatic improvement in lameness for several months to over a year.

The stem cells being used for this are obtained from fat within the body. Fat, or adipose as it is medically termed, is a great source of adult stem cells, having a 500 greater yield of stem cells than bone marrow for the same amount. The nice part about this is that by using fat, the stem cells do not need to be cultured which usually takes a week or longer. This means that once the fat is harvested, the turnaround time to being able to treat the patient with the adult cells is as quick as 48 hours.

Stem cells work in a number of ways to help with osteoarthritis and other conditions. The main way is that they release substances called trophic factors which stimulate the other cells around the area to do things. They also have anti-inflammatory properties and can differentiate into any cell to stimulate repair of damaged tissues.

The process that is involved with using these cells to treat arthritis in dogs is relatively simple. The first step is harvesting the fat. This procedure does require the dog to be anesthetized and is a sterile surgical procedure so that the fat does not become infected. Fat is obtained from one of three locations in the body where there is always an abundance of fat, the inguinal region, the thoracic region, or the falciform fat which is in the abdomen. Only 15 grams of fat are necessary which is about the size of a large test tube.

Once the fat is harvested, it is sent overnight to a company that processes the fat and extracts the stem cells from it. The company can do this within 12 hours and ships it back overnight so it is back at your doctors hospital within 48 hours from the time it was harvested. The cells are packed in a sterile syringe, ready to be injected into the affected, arthritic joints.

Injecting of the cells can usually be done with just sedation. Although the cells can be injected into the bloodstream and will have an effect at the arthritic joints, it has been found to be more effective if it is injected directly into the affected joints. With a good sample of fat submitted for processing, up to 4 joints can easily be injected with the quantity of cells that are returned.

Results from the stem cells being injected usually take about a month to fully manifest and can last for several months to over a year in some patients. Complications from the procedure are minimal with irritation and swelling at the injection sites and fluid pocket formation where the fat was harvested as the most common problems seen.

Good Dog Training

It is highly important that dogs be fed regularly, on a schedule, rather than have the food available for them on a self feeding basis. There are many good reasons for this. For one thing, this is the best thing for their digestion and can help you to be aware of the health of your pet. Dogs who go off their feed are recognized more quickly when the feeding is done on a regular schedule and not "on demand".

Also, feeding dogs on demand does not allow for a period of rest for their digestive systems. The digestive juices within a dogs stomach are stimulated by the sense of smell, thus if a dog is constantly exposed to the smell of his food, even though he may not be eating it and it is just there for him 24/7, his stomach does not have a chance to rest.

Training a non-aggressive approach when around food is also important and this can not be done successfully unless you are the one to offer the food to the dog and thus can control his eating. When a dog is eating, you will be present and can train him to allow people to approach his food bowl. It is a good idea to pick his food bowl up while he is eating, stir your hand around in it, then set it back down. Occasionally you can also add a small tidbit of something special. this will teach your dog not to bite the hand that feeds him (or anyone else's hand).

Dogs need to be able to eat in different places. Feeding them on a regular basis but moving their food bowl to different areas of the living quarters, outside, inside, in the garage, etc., will be helpful should you ever take your dog with you on a camping trip or trips of an overnight nature.

Training the dog to sit or stand or wait or even do tricks is much easier when you are the one to set his food in front of him. If you are working on a particular skill with your dog, you can ask him to perform it and then set his food down. Teaching the "down" and the "sit" become much easier when you use the feeding time as an incentive for practice. A dominant dog learns that he is still subordinate to you, his human leader, when you are the one offering the food and providing it only after he has worked to get it.

Lastly but still important, there should be times during the feeding of your dog on a daily basis that you do have other people feed your dog. What if you should become ill or not able to be present? One of the important benefits of your dog being fed on a regularly scheduled basis is that he will be used to eating at a particular time and is much more likely to eat when a stranger might have to feed him.

A sure sign of a well-behaved dog is when you enter someone's home and their pet does not jump on you in greeting. Not only is jumping on guests annoying, it can be dangerous. Large dogs can knock people down and are capable of seriously injuring small children or the elderly. Not to mention all the mud he gets on your clothes on rainy days!

Jumping on people is also a sure signal that your dog thinks he's the leader of the pack. Watch dogs together and you'll see them exhibiting the same behavior. Allowing your dog to jump on people undermines all your training.

These dogs have learned if they jump on people they get attention and often petted. Your job is to help them unlearn that with positive reinforcement. Here are some tips to help you do just that:

1. Ignore your dog when you arrive and leave the house. Ditch the long goodbye and the long-lost dog owner greeting. Don't greet your pet for five minutes once you get home. This will help break the habit.

2. Do you want to dance? If a week or so of not greeting your dog doesn't break the behavior, try this on your medium or large dog. When he jumps on you, firmly grip his paws while he's still on his hind legs. Hold them without squeezing until he starts to squirm, then firmly command, "Off!" Some trainers recommend stepping on your pet's back paws at the same time, but this could cause injury to your pet's delicate feet. Holding his front paws, sometimes for several minutes, will do the trick and won't be painful.

3. Use the leash. If guests are coming over, keep your dog on a leash. When he jumps on the visitors, pop the leash to engage his training collar, command, "Off!" and lead him to the other side of the room. Praise him after you lead him away.

Dog Training Secrets

Schutzhund dog training is not for everyone, but it certainly has its benefits. Schutzhund dog training started in Germany in the 1900s as a test for the working dog qualities of the German Shepherd dog breed. Training your dog using the Schutzhund method gives the dog the ability to protect its master, but show enough restraint to still obey its master despite highly stressful circumstances. For example, the dog should not be afraid to bite the arm of an assailant, but still have the presence of mind to let go if the master bids the dog to do so. Today, this type of dog training is a popular sport that tests the dog characters in three stages: obedience, tracking, and protection.

Obedience

This Schutzhund dog training stage is conducted in a large field and involves two dogs. One dog is left on a corner of the field while the handler works on the other dog. Then, after the first dog completes the course, the dogs switch places. The dog is taken through a series of exercises, such as heeling among a group of people, recalls, and retrieves. There is also a time in Shutzhund dog training that gunshots are fired and the dog is expected to remain in heeling position. This tests the dog's reactions to stressful situations. If the dog is too aggressive or shows fear, the dog doesn't pass this part of training.

Tracking

In this part of the training, the dog is asked to track a series of articles that are previously laid in a field. The dog then finds the articles and shows that he or she has found the article. Usually, the dog indicates this by lying down with the article between his or her front paws.

Protection

Training your dog using the Schutzhund method is not complete without the third stage, which is protection. The dog is tested on how he or she can protect his or her master and still have the presence of mind to obey its master through this. A decoy, who wears a heavily padded sleeve, then pretends to attack the master. The dog is expected to stop the attack by biting the padded sleeve. As part of the schutzhund dog training, the dog must also let go of the padded sleeve when given a command. Failure to do so will result to the dog not passing the test. As part of the schutzhund dog training protection phase, the dog is also asked to find a hiding decoy and to bark and keep the decoy until the handler dismisses him or her.

Competitions that feature the best of Schutzhund dog training abounds. There are several training levels in which your dog can compete.

House Training A Dog

House training dogs is easier when you get to start them as puppies, as they are younger it is easier for them to learn. You have decided to do the humane thing and rescue an adult dog from the pound, you have come home and have just now realized that your new pet is not house trained as you discover a little present in the kitchen...now what. Never fear, it is possible to house train adult dogs.

As with house training puppies; this will require diligence, commitment, patience and a good nature. As with puppies, no punishment, this will only cause more problems in the future. If you catch you dog eliminating in the house, rush the dog outside, once they have finished going outside praise them. If the dog makes a mistake while you weren't paying attention, clean up the mess and move on, there is no point is punishing the animal because you weren't paying attention.

Don't kid yourself, this will be a lot of work, every time your dog goes outside, you go with them so you can praise them at the right moment, remember, dogs live in the now you must praise them at the moment, not later when you let them back inside. As laborious as this will be it allows your canine to get an understanding of what you want and allows you to get a feel for their schedule.

As you can see, house training dogs is easier the younger they are, don't let this dissuade you from adopting an adult dog that may not be trained. Just as with puppies, once trained they will follow the rules unless they have no other option. Remember, adult dogs need homes, families and love to.
