Are you confused about which wire to use when getting your electronic dog fence. The 2 most common types of dog fence wire are 18 Gage and 20 Gage. Which should you choose for your situation and why? Obviously, both gages work for all underground fence systems or Innotek, PetSafe or other manufacturers would not pack their dog fence systems with 20 Gage wire. However, there are some recommended guidelines that will help you decide which dog fence wire will be better for you. First 18 Gage is stronger and more durable and long lasting than 20 Gage Boundary wire. Solid core copper wire is better than stranded wire.

Here are some guidelines to follow:

Use 18 Gage if you have

• Rocky soil or rocks
• If you are not burying the wire
• Many trees or vegetation
• Larger than 5 acres

Use 20 Gage if you have:

• Loose sandy or clay soil
• Putting wire next to a fence
• Few trees or vegetation
• 5 acres or smaller area

PLEASE NOTE - If installing an electronic dog fence above ground, you will need to use lawn staples every 5 feet to keep the wire in place. If the wire moves around then the dog will become confused about where his boundaries are. These are sold in packages of about 100 staples. One package will take care of one 500 foot spool of wire. Where you cut grass, it is best to bury the wire.

A few important tips to keep in mind when purchasing a fence system:

-Installing the wire underground the best tool to use is an edger, a gas powered edger or an edger that also lays cable at the same time, it could be called a cable layer or edger-trencher. The wire only needs to be buried 2 -3 in but can go deeper if you want.

-Never mix 2 types of wire! Mixed wire can give you signal problems and affect the functioning of your system. If you use 20 Gage stranded to start, then stick with 20 Gage stranded. Don't go from stranded to solid core. The same goes for all the different types and sizes of wire. If more than 500 foot is being purchased for larger areas, make sure that extra wire is the same type of wire.

- If you are using the pre-twisted wire you must use 20 Gage twisted wire with 20 Gage solid core wire and if you are using 18 Gage wire for your fence you must use 18 Gage twisted wire. Pre-twisted wire is use to create a gateway or place where the dog can cross the dog fence wire and not get a stimulation or shock from his collar.

-NEVER attach or weave dog your fencing wire through a CHAIN LINK FENCE or metal fence; it will negatively affect the functioning of the fence systems.

-If you have an existing fence that your dog jumps, climbs over or digs under, it would be best to put the electric fence wire at least one foot inside the existing fence, not attach it to the existing fence. That way the dog will be able to get the collar, he is wearing, to cross the wire in order to get a shock . If the dog fence wire is too close to the existing wooden or chain link fence then the dog will not get a shock and not be deterred.

-If you are running the dog fence wire going through a forest or heavily treed area, where you cannot bury the wire, just leave it on the surface. Use staples or trees to keep the wire in place and the ground will grow up over it. It is important to bury the wire where you will be cutting grass over the wire.

-The wire is waterproof with a Polyurethane coating and can also go through wet or swampy areas and still work just fine.

-IMPORTANT, if your are ordering extra rolls of wire, you should always order an extra set of 50 boundary flags with every extra roll of 500 foot of wire that you purchase. It is important for your pet to know the boundary. If you order 1500 foot of wire for example, you should get 150 boundary flags.

What is an invisible fence, and when should it be used?

The Instant Fence system was originally designed to be used in RVs. The idea was to give pet owners who already had pets being contained by an wired fence system a portable system to take with them when camping or on vacation. It was never originally intended to be a replacement for the 'underground' (wired) fences. However, because of its 'Plug & Play' functionality, the Instant Fence quickly became a favorite item of pet owners.

Recently the Instant Fence received a significant upgrade. In the past, it only came with a rather large, 1 level receiver collar that was best suited for medium to larger dogs due to its size and strength. PetSafe wisely changed the receiver to an adjustable 6 level collar and reduced its size by 20%. This made this

system much more beneficial, as now pets as small as 8 lbs and as large as 100 lbs or more can be contained by this system.

The Instant Fence and its receiver collar - the PIF-275 are the only PetSafe Invisible Fence items that are not interchangeable with any other PetSafe system. The reason for this is that they work in exactly the opposite way from an 'underground' (wired) system. When activated, the PIF-300 emits a radio signal up to 90 feet in every direction in a perfect circle.

The PIF-275 receiver worn by the pet is always hearing this signal and therefore it does not activate. However once the dog walks out of the zone and the collar loses this signal, that is when the receiver wakes up and begins to correct the pet via stimulation through 2 contact points on the Receiver Collar that touch your pet's neck.

With an underground fence, the only place that the signal exists is around the buried boundary wire. Once the pet walks up to that wire and the receiver hears the signal, it then wakes up and activates.

So with our Instant Fence, the receiver collar needs to always hear the signal; otherwise it activates.

With our 'underground' (wired) systems, the receiver collar never wants to hear the signal; if it does, then it activates.

The two main drawbacks to our Instant Fence are:

1. It has a maximum range of 90 feet in any direction.

2. The boundary shape cannot be adjusted. It can only transmit in a perfect circle in every direction. If you wish to increase the boundary, you may use multiple transmitters and overlap the signal to create a boundary of 180 feet in every direction but keep in mind that the transmitters must be indoors and out of the weather. Overall the Instant Fence is a great product for someone who needs simple installation and is not concerned with its limited adjustability.

Most people have heard of gun shy dogs. It's really a misnomer, because they aren't afraid of guns as such. They're afraid of any loud noises that resemble a gun being shot. This includes vehicles backfiring, fireworks, thunderstorms and, of course, gunfire.

Many gun shy dogs have been seriously injured and even killed when fireworks displays have scared them. Their first instinct is to run and, unfortunately, that often means running into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

Dog owners with gun shy dogs have to be watchful, especially in summer, when there often are loud noises that come out of the blue. Apart from running into harms way, gun shy dogs can be extremely destructive.

They climb on and destroy furniture, they scratch in corners, at walls and doors. They dig under fences in a desperate attempt to escape. Some dogs have severely injured themselves jumping through glass windows in fear.

Dog owners who inadvertently leave a door or gate open will soon discover that their beloved dogs have disappeared. If you're lucky, your dog will return when the fear and the perceived danger has stopped.

Here are six safety tips you can use to protect your gun shy dog.

Dog Safety Tip #1. Travel safety

If your gun shy dog travels with you, be aware of areas where there might be loud noises, such as while driving past road construction. The workers often use dynamite and heavy machinery that can scare your dog. Keep your car windows rolled up.

Dog Safety Tip #2. Keep an ID on your dog

A gun shy dog should always wear a secure collar with an ID tag attached that contains the dog's name and dog owner's phone number, and a current rabies tag.

Be sure to include any special information that finders might need to know. For instance, if he requires medication (ie: diabetes, thyroid, epilepsy), just in case you don't get him back before his next dose. If he does go into a health situation, the finder won't have to worry that he might have rabies or other dangerous disease. Besides, the person will know to get treatment for your dog.

Dog Safety Tip #3. Find a safe place for your gun shy dog

Dogs will seek shelter where they can hide, often somewhere tight and dark such as under a table or in a cave. You can ease his distress by making a spot for him in a closet or under the bed where he can head when he becomes afraid. Get him used to that area prior to such an emergency. Put a familiar blanket on the floor and include a favorite toy to help distract him from the noise. A radio will help.

Dog Safety Tip #4. Seek medical advice

Some gun shy dogs are absolutely terrified and anxious during fireworks displays and thunder storms. Ask your vet if he can prescribe a sedative you can keep on hand for such events.

Dog Safety Tip #5.

Get training for your gun shy dog. Dog trainers can advise you on how to desensitize your pet to those alarming loud noises. It will take some time, but it can be done.

Dog Safety Tip #6: Watch your own reaction

The first instinct of many dog owners is to hold their trembling dog and talk sweetly to try to calm him. This is one of the worst things you can do because it confirms his beliefs that something is wrong.

The best approach is to talk normally to your dog, reassure him by telling him "it's okay, relax", and pet him normally. Don't make a big fuss. Laughing is a good response because it's the opposite of what he's experiencing and sends the message that there really is nothing to fear.

Distraction is extremely effective. Call his name when he's listening intently to the noise. Offer his squeaky toy. Play with him while constantly talking to keep his ears busy.

With these six dog safety tips, dog owners can alleviate their pet's fears and keep them safe from harm.

Preparation is important. Have a leash handy for when things get too noisy. Have sedatives on hand. Make sure all the doors, windows and gates are secured. Close your car windows. Get your dog used to a safe hideout in your home where he can feel protected.

Dog safety is of prime importance for any dog owner with a gun shy dog.

Gun Dog Training

German Shepherds make excellent guard dogs for a number of reasons. They are strong, clever and highly obedient which makes training German Shepherds a pleasant task. Only specific dogs have the ability to be trained to work with people and the public. Guard dogs are used by the police, private security companies and for personal use. Many people have bought a German Shepherd as a family dog and if the dog shows potential during basic obedience training they might want to advance and train the dog to be a guard dog.

Training should start when the dog is still young because this is when the dog will want to learn. You can train your German Shepherd the basic skills of obedience training and scent discrimination yourself without any assistance. After your German Shepherd has mastered the basics and if you are prepared to advance you might want to approach your local dog club for advice in training a guard dog. In order for your dog to become an official guard dog you will have to attend guard dog trials. Guard dogs are required to complete various tests as well as be able to past a character test.

The following criteria are included in most guard dog trials:

• Basic obedience exercises
• Scent discrimination
• No gun shyness
• Protective instinct
• Listening skills
• Following of orders

Trainers and officials will assist you in preparing your German Shepherd for guard dog training trials. Your German shepherd needs to be able to perform a number of exercises in order to pass the test. Some examples of the exercises asked in guard dog training are:

• Simulated attacks on the dog and its master
• Flight of the attacker
• Pursuit by the dog

Training Collars For Dogs

The pinch or prong training collaris perhaps the most misunderstood dog training tool on the market. In this review I will touch on two different aspects of the pinch collar:

1- Its benefits in training
2- My review of the best pinch or prong collar on the market.

Why the pinch collar is actually one of the most humane dog training tools on the market-

Whenever I state something like this I am invariably met with incredulity and often times hatred. I stand by my statement, though. The pinch collar is one of the most humane dog training tools on the market. Admittedly, it looks like a torture device. So how can it be a humane tool?

The answer lies in proper dog training methods. Whenever you are training a dog your efforts will only be as successful as your ability to form positive associations with desired and acceptable behavior AND negative associations with behaviors you wish to get rid of. In order to form positive associations with 'good' behaviors that requires motivational training methods such as praise, toys, and treats. In order to form negative associations with 'bad' behaviors that requires corrections such as leash corrections, e-collar corrections, spray bottles, or the withholding of treats or praise.

Therein lies the reason why the prong collar is a very humane tool. When it is appropriate to give a leash correction the pinch collar allows you to use the least amount of force yet get the greatest level of control. Its design leverages any tug you give on the leash so that you are able to give a very light correction and yet have it be meaningful and capable of teaching and training your dog. Anytime that I can reduce the amount of force I use with my dog, I'm all for it.
