Dog training isn't difficult, but it does require consistency and the right methods. If you issue a command, do so with authority. Some commands are taught together to be effective. Once you know the secrets to basic dog training, advanced training will come much easier.

Here are solutions to some of the common problems new puppy owners face.

Before any dog training can begin, you'll need a training collar and leash for your puppy.

1. Puppy runs out the door and won't come back.

Until your puppy receives his dog training, the only solution is to ensure he can't get out the door or gate. The sooner you teach him the proper commands, however, the sooner you can stop worrying about him escaping.

There actually are two commands that work together in this situation: sit or down, and stay. You'll start by teaching your puppy to sit. Once he's learned this, which shouldn't take long, you can teach him to stay. So he doesn't get confused, it's best if you save the stay lesson until tomorrow.

Teach to sit:

Kneel or squat down beside your puppy. Keep the leash at a length of about two feet between the puppy's collar and you hand. Gently but firmly grasp the spot on his back just in front of your puppy's hips. Press down firmly to force his back end down while holding his head end up with the leash. While doing this, tell your puppy to Sit, making sure you emphasize the 't'.

Teach to stay:

There are two parts to the stay command. You'll tell him to stay and block him with your hand. With leash in hand, stand beside your puppy so that you're both facing in the same direction. Tell him to sit. He should have learned to obey this command in the "Teach to sit" instruction. Then, order him to stay while holding your flat hand about four inches in front of his face.

Be persistent with your dog training, but don't work with him for more than 10-15 minutes at a time or he and you will become frustrated.

Don't forget the consistent praises for a job well done.

Once he's learned the sit-stay command, you'll find lots of opportunities to use it, like when he jumps on people.

2. Puppy is destructive when he's left in a closed room.

Being social animals, puppies hate being separated from the pack. The separation anxiety, fear and distress caused by being isolated causes him to chew anything in site. There are several, solutions. First, never use a barrier that he can't see through, such as a door or piece of wood. Use a special dog gate or other such item that enables him to see the other "pack" members.

Putting a radio in the room can help, too. And don't forget the toys.

3. Puppy eats shoes, socks and other clothing.

One mistake many owners make is to give their puppies old socks or shoes to gnaw. While this is great fun for the puppy, it sets you up for problems later on. What you're essentially doing is dog training. He doesn't know the difference between your clothes and the ones you give him. Never give your puppy socks or shoes. Provide him with proper puppy chew toys and special jaw exercisers.

4. Puppy won't leave visitors alone.

Puppies love everybody and are anxious to show it. To break your puppy of this habit, teach him the sit-stay command. Of course, you can't do that when company's around. The sooner he goes through dog training, the easier it is to resolve these situations. After he's trained, issue the sit-stay command whenever he jumps on people. In the meantime, simply put him in a confined area with a see-through gate until your guests leave.

Dog training is very important for a number of reasons. It saves you a lot of problems when certain situations arise. It gives you control over your puppy. In addition, it can save his life. Some owners are content just to teach their puppies the basics: sit, stay, come, fetch, and wait.

The advantages of the Gentle Leader are you get definite control of your dog on walks. The Gentle Leader is inexpensive. Although it does take getting used to, a dog can adapt to it rather quickly. You don't have to be a dog trainer to get him to respond to it.

Fixing a break in your Invisible Dog Fence or Underground Dog Fence is cheap and easy. You will periodically get breaks in the boundary line of your dog fence. You will know that the line is broken because the dog fence transmitter unit attached to your house will signal an error by either a flashing red light or a beeping noise. You will also notice that your dog's receiver collars no longer work and will not beep when you take them over the boundary line.

The boundary wire for your underground dog fence needs to make a complete loop, beginning and ending at the transmitter unit. When you get a break in the loop the signals cannot get through and the unit stops working. Our job is to find the break in the boundary wire and fix it. Before you start you need to remove the receiver collars from your dogs.

Here are the tools you will need for this DIY voyage:

1. One 100 µH RF Choke (available from Radioshack (catalog number 273-102)) - $1.39
2. One waterproof wire nut (available from most home improvement or hardware stores) - $0.39
3. One AM radio - any portable AM radio will do, tuned to 600.
4. One pair of scissors
5. One Shovel or anything else you can dig with

Time: 30 minutes

There are two ways to find the break, we start with the easiest way:

Finding a Break by Visual Inspection

Most breaks are caused by someone running an edger, aerator or otherwise digging through the boundary wire. These breaks can usually be found by walking along where the boundary wire runs and looking for spots where there has been recent digging. Unearth the wire in these spots and check for damage. The most likely spots are where the boundary wire crosses your driveway or pathways. Also check that the boundary wire is properly connected to the transmitter box.

If you found the break, proceed to the section on fixing the break. If not, proceed to the following section where we will show you how to use an RF Choke to make the boundary wire 'sing' and reveal the location of the break to you.

RF Choke Method

The RF Choke will make your boundary wire 'sing.' We will be able to listen to this sound with the AM radio you have tuned to 600 and will be able to find the break by looking for the part of the wire that is not singing.

First switch off the transmitter box. Now, disconnect the two boundary wire leads that connect to the box. In their place, connect the two legs of the RF choke. Now turn the transmitter box back on. The transmitter box should no longer be signalling that there is an error.

Now turn the transmitter box back off. Take the two boundary wires and wrap an insulated section of each wire around different legs of the RF choke. Now turn the transmitter box back on. The transmitter should still signal that there is no error. Rotate the knob labeled "field width" on the transmitter box clockwise till it is at full power.

Now turn on the radio tuned to AM 600, and walk along the boundary wire. When you hold the radio near the boundary wire it should make a deep pulsing/throbbing noise, like Ugh-Ugh-Ugh-Ugh-Ugh ... As you move the radio closer and further away from the boundary wire you will notice that there are some distances where the sound is louder and some distances where it gets quieter. As you walk around the boundary you will find a spot where there is no sound coming from the AM radio irrespective of whether you move the radio closer or further from the boundary wire. This is where you should dig up the wire and look for the break. It will be within three yards of the quiet spot

Now that you have done the hard part let's fix the break

Fixing the Break

Use the scissors to strip the wire on each side of the break in the boundary wire. Now insert the two stripped sections into the wire nut and gently twist until you start to get a bit of resistance from the wire nut. Now we will test to see if you have fixed the problem.

Return to the transmitter unit and turn off the power. Disconnect the RF choke legs and reconnect the boundary wire. Power back on the transmitter and there should be no error signal. If there is an error signal, look for another break, it is possible that there was more than one. If there was no error signal, bury the boundary wire you dug up. Reset the "field width" knob on the transmitter box to it's original setting and you are done. Congratulations you just saved yourself a house call from the local Underground Dog Fence company and a large bill!

In recent times, dog training videos have become increasingly helpful in showing dog owners how to hold their dogs by the collar without fear of harm to either their dog or themselves.

Quite a number of dog bites have come about as a result of 'collar-grabbing'. These collar-grab bites usually happen when the owner suddenly reaches for their dog's collar or collar regions, sometimes without any dog training intent on the dog owner's part.

What then happens is that the dog comes to associate being held by the collar with pain or discomfort.

This association can switch the dog into a defensive mode when an attempt is made to hold her by the collar. Some dogs don't bite but instead use defensive techniques such as playing "catch me".

It's best to begin your collar grab training while your dog is just a puppy. You must do all you can not to let your dog or puppy create a negative association in it's mind with collar grabbing.

Instead, seek to reassure your dog when reaching for it's collar with positive reinforcement.

1. Collar grab training should not be solely associated with the end of a play session. Do not fall into the pattern of only reaching for your pup's collar at the end of play time. This pattern will create an impression in your dog's mind that collar grabbing is bad and unwelcome because it always signals the end of play time.

What you should do instead is interrupt play time with collar grabbing every now and then and mix it up with some obedience training exercises like "sit" and "stand". Be sure to reward your dog generously at the end of each session.

This will create a positive connection in your dog's mind that says there is a reward associated with collar grab. Your frequent collar grabs during play time will now no longer signal end of play time but rather, time for refreshments or a quick timeout.

2. Collar grab training should not be associated with confinement. Animals by nature do not like to be confined. If you grab your puppy by the collar and lead or drag her to confinement, naturally she will come to associate the negative results of being confined to collar grab.

To create a positive atmosphere, associate confinement with something positive. An idea would be to throw some kibble or favorite chew toys into the confinement area. In no time at all, your pup will be happy to follow instructions to go to it's room or dog house.

3. Most of all, do not ever allow your dogs to associate collar grabbing as being a prelude to punishment and reprimand. Don't call your dog over only to scold her and grab her by the collar.

This will almost invariably result in your dog never wanting to come to you. The result is that your pup will grow into a dog that hates being collar grabbed and when she senses an attempt to grab her by the collar, she becomes evasive and offensive and might even resort to snarling and biting.

Following a good dog training video or program will help you prevent this from happening.
