Using a leave command will give you much greater control over what your dog eats and sniffs when you are out walking the streets. You can also use it at home or any situation. The leave command is essentially a word that tells your dog not to sniff or eat something and it is the first step in training food refusal. There is not usually a hand signal involved in this type of training because it is more than likely used when you are walking and as your dog may be on the leash, you will not have your hands free.

Why should I use a leave command?

A leave command is a very useful tool to have in your dog training toolkit because it is easy to train and can be used in a variety of situations. It is also very important because it can stop your dog from eating something that may make it sick or may cause choking.

How do I start training a leave command?

Choose the word you want to use - some trainers use the word 'leave'. You can do either or both of the following. For the quickest and best results, do both and ask someone to help you when training food refusal. When you are out in the street and your dog goes to sniff or eat something off the ground, say 'leave' and keep walking. Don't give your dog the opportunity to get to it anyway by walking quickly away. Because this is a form of capturing, it will take some time because you are reliant on there being something on the ground. The second method is better because you have full control and can practise it anytime.

Choose a food that your dog likes and leave a very small pile on the ground. Put your dog on the leash and walk by the food. Walk close enough for him to sniff it but not too close so he can reach it. Give the leave command just as your dog goes for the food. In all good training timing is everything. Your dog needs to understand what you want straight away. You need to interrupt his behaviour as soon as it starts.

When you are walking past, give your dog praise. If you want to use treats to reward him, wait until you are five paces away. Your dog needs to learn that he is being rewarded for leaving the food on the ground and walking away so putting a small distance between the treat and the food on the ground will reinforce this.

FOOD REFUSAL

Food refusal can save your dog from eating poisoned food or over eating. Training food refusal may take a long time depending upon your dog's appetite and with some breeds like Labradors it needs constant practise and reminders.

Before you begin food refusal, choose an 'eat' command. Some people use 'eat' and others 'OK'. Whatever word you choose has to be different from any other word you use for your training.

Put your dog on his leash and get him into a sit. Ask someone to walk up to him and offer him some treats. It is important that you keep your dog in a sit and only let him have the treats when you say so. If he learns forward and stands up, re-command him into a sit and ask the person with the food to step away. When he can sit and wait for your command to eat, that's when he has learnt what you want. Now you have to practise and start making his training more intense.

Remember: always give your dog or puppy the opportunity to correct his behaviour and do the right thing. It is up to you to teach him what is acceptable and what is not. Reward acceptable behaviour; discourage unacceptable behaviour by using loud unpleasant noises, withdrawal of attention or treats or leaving your puppy on its own. Never hit or strike your puppy; you will only be teaching him that violence is an acceptable behaviour in your pack and he may use it on other pack members or friends including children.

Dogs are natural companions for seniors. Dogs are good company. They can help seniors feel secure by keeping the house under watch. They also have the added bonus of giving seniors a reason to be more active. But when considering a dog for a senior, there should be several things taken into consideration in order to find the best match. 

First, the dog should be suited to living in an apartment or small space. They should be able to get most of their exercise indoors and grooming should not be too demanding, since most seniors are on a fixed income and cannot afford to pay for such services. I tried to stick with breeds that are relatively easy to train and don't need a strong pack leader.

Taking all those things into consideration, I've devised a short list of the Top Five Dog Breeds that would work best for Seniors.

The first on the list is my favorite breed; the Chihuahua. This breed is perfect for seniors because they are easy to keep and maintain and their exercise level will easily adapt to that of their household. They do need to be socialized thoroughly so that they do not become fearful or too yippy. They are a loving dog, but they need rules and boundaries, just like any other.

The second dog is the Chinese Crested. This may seem like an unusual choice, but they are very loving dogs and get along well with other pets. They are a true companion dog. As with the Chihuahua, the Chinese Crested needs to be socialized properly to prevent timidness and they do need to be protected from the sun and cold weather.  

The third dog is the Pug. They are very happy and playful dogs and they get along well with other pets and people. They do need to be protected from the heat, as they tend to overheat quickly, but they do benefit from short walks. The fourth dog is the Lucas Terrier. This cute little terrier is sweet and easy to train. They are a very friendly terrier. They do require a weekly brushing, but they have a low doggie odor and shed very little. 

Another one of my favorite breeds is the sweet little English Toy Spaniel (King Charles Spaniel), which ends the list at number five. This is a breed that LOVES to be around people. They get along great with children and are friendly with other dogs. They are happy and playful; a real treat to be around.

There is no reason why a senior cannot enjoy the companionship of a canine, but they need to be sure to choose a dog that will be happy in the environment and lifestyle that they live. Make sure the dog is easy to keep and maintain and both the dog and the senior will be happy for many years.

Not too sure which type of dog to buy? This is part 1 of 3 articles that addresses the different needs and characteristics of some of the popular dogs.

Chihuahua

A small, fast-moving toy dog named after the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. It stands between 15 cm to 25 cm tall, but some grow as tall as 35 cm. There are only 2 recognised varieties of Chihuahuas, the long-coat and the short-haired. Long-coat Chihuahuas have a downy undercoat, which makes them look 'fluffy'. Short-haired Chihuahuas, on the other hand, require minimal grooming. Although Chihuahuas are small, they are not suitable for families with very young children because they have the tendency to bite when frightened. They can also be quite picky eaters. Overfeeding is definitely a no-no because overweight Chihuahuas are prone to joint injuries, diabetes and shortened life span. And they don't really cool that cute.

Maltese

This is one of the oldest breed around and is believed to be originated from the island of Malta. A Maltese is a toy dog that is covered with long, silky fur and is usually pure white in colour. They have very expressive facial features, which makes them popular as pets. They are companion dogs and love attention from their owners. They are also extremely playful, and are good with children. They thrive well in small enclosed areas, and are popular with those living in the cities. However, Maltese can get very aggressive and they have the behaviour of barking constantly.

Australian Silky Terrier

They are a friendly lot. They originated from Australia (hence its name) and this breed is classified as a toy dog in Australia but a terrier in Europe. It has a silky coat and it is usually non-shedding. This breed is suitable for those who are allergic to pet hair. Similar to the Maltese, they love the attention of their owners. A playful breed, it is suitable for those families with older children. They respond well to obedience training, coupled with rewards and praise. The only main problem with this breed is that it's coat tangles easily and will need daily grooming.

Pomeranian

This is one of my favourite breed. It looks lively and graceful with its trademark tail. They are typically friendly and active, but they can develop a bad habit of barking excessively if allowed to do so. They are also intelligent creatures and can be trained easily. Note that they are extremely loyal and will lay around their owners' feet. Owing to this loyal behaviour, they will follow the owners from room to room, thus risking getting stepped on. It is important to train them not to do so.

Shih Tsu

It's name was derived because it looks like a lion (Shih Tzu literally means "lion dog" in Chinese), and it originated from China. They are very sensitive to high temperatures, so it is important to keep them in cooler conditions. They need regular grooming to maintain their coats, and they shed little if proper care is given. Supervision is recommended during drinking because water can enter their flat noses easily and cause breathing problems. Not suitable for busy professionals due to its constant grooming needs.

Question 1: A Timid German Shepherd

I have a dog of breed German shepherd and age 11 months bought from a private breeder when he was only 8 weeks old. He was a well mannered and happy puppy who never got any punishment from any of the family members throughout the period of his stay with us. It is a pity that he has become an introvert. He is afraid of all people other than those in the family and me. Since we are living on a carnation ranch there are a lot of people around the ranch all the time and hence there was no reason for the dog to become shy and scared. I would like know the reason for this sort of behavior by the dog and also the reason for doing this.

Answer 1:

The main reason for this sort of behavior of the dog is lack of proper socialization as a puppy. Living on a carnation ranch and having lots of visitors are not good enough for the puppy's socialization. This requires optimum emotional development for which the puppies have to be petted, talked to and played with, fondled etc. by a large number of people in addition to the members of the family.

It would have been ideal if you had taken your puppy with you on trips to town when it was in the age group of 8 and 16 weeks; it is advisable that the dog is not kept only in the carnation ranch. At the current age of 11 months, the possibility of improving the dog in this aspect is low and the damage appears to be permanent. You could try to take your dog for formal obedience training classes in your area which might help in his confidence building; by doing this there could be a possibility of improving the dog's behavior.

The UKC (acronym for United Kennel Club) is the second-largest office for the registering purebred dogs in the USA. Its network of business with breeders and owners has spread to Canada, Mexico, Japan, South Africa etc. For that matter, this has spread throughout the world. This has no affiliation with the AKC (American Kennel Club); it registers dogs which are not recognized by the AKC; also registers dogs which have neither been recognized nor registered.

It is not practicable to give the list of all the breeds recognized and registered by the UKC since the number is very large; however to give you a broad idea this list includes breeds such as Bluetick coonhound, American black and tan coonhound, Plott hound, English shepherd, Collies, Boxers, German Shepherds etc.

Both UKC and AKC have their own standards for the dogs; hence a dog which can be registered under the AKC need not necessarily be recognized by UKC and vice versa.

With the dog population increasing in the United States every year, more and more pet owners are forced to deal with the ever-more growing problem of aggressive dog behavior. Aggressive dog behavior sends hundreds of thousands of people to the emergency room every year because of dog bites. For most families they have no clue that their dog is aggressive until he or she bites a loved one for the first time. The worst part of this situation for most dog owners isn't that one of their family members may need a few stitches. The problem is that now their beloved dog, beloved family member almost, may now need to be put down because of their aggressive behavior.

The largest group of people attacked by aggressive dogs is children under the age of twelve. Often times children are more susceptible to dog bites because of their smaller size, and not fully understanding how the mind of a dog works. Dogs cannot comprehend reasoning or rational behavior, its just not in their nature. Canines have a basic understanding of the world, if they feel threatened or scared they respond often times with violent behavior. Now this reaction most of the time isn't your dogs fault, or your child's fault. Young children and dogs really don't know any better. So as the dog owner, and adult, it is your job to set boundaries and rules for all persons of canines living in your home.

Whether you agree or not, I believe over the past 15 or so years, many dogs owners are treating their pets as a true member of the family, instead of the family pet. While I agree you should treat your dog well with love and respect, you must understand that regardless of how much you love your dog, it is in essence still a dog. Dogs cannot think like us, and never will. So while your canine is still a puppy you must guide them with proper training and boundaries. You must get it into their heads that YOU are the boss, you are the pack leader and what you say goes. Humanizing your pet is often times the root of aggressive dog behavior because your dog feels your family and him are on the same level, instead of thinking you are the leader and he is just a follower.

As a dog owner you must take the responsibility to be on the watch for signs of aggressive dog behavior.If your dog ever shows signs of aggression towards members of your family or strangers you must take charge and squash the problem right from the start. Ignoring dog aggression and hoping it goes away and disappears will only make matters worse. Dog tear stains are a cosmetic problem, caused by an overflow of tears onto the cheeks, which is most obvious on dogs with white and other light color coats. Tear accumulation on facial hair can lead to matting of the hair, skin irritation and possibly infection. Hair can act like a wick, drawing the tears out of the eye. This is correctable by removing the hair, keeping the area clean and removing accumulated material or crusts. If a skin lesion or any type of eye infection or problem is suspected, see your veterinarian.

Face hair is a breeding ground for bacterial and yeast growth.

You need to take steps to eliminate any bacterial or yeast infections. The most common is "red yeast", associated with reddish-brown facial stains and possibly a moderate to strong odor, as bacteria on hair and skin react with the clear tears.

If you plan on purchasing a puppy and the potential for chromodacryorrhea (dog tear stains) is an issue for you, observe the mother, sire and others in the lineage.

Many specialists believe the individual structure around the eye area plays a significant role in dog tear stains. If so, then genetics may be the source of the problem. Miniature breeds, and Persian cats, often have more prominent eyes that stretch the eyelid and can cut off the drainage system. There is little that can be done to correct this. Sometimes the eyelids turn inward and block the drainage; this is surgically correctable. However, if you think surgery is too drastic and the problem isn't that bad, try alternative methods that are less harsh.

Who has a predisposition towards dog tear stain problems?

Akita, American Bulldog, American Eskimo Dog, Bichon Frise, Brussels Griffon, Cairn Terrier, Chihuahua, Chinese Crested, Cocker Spaniel, Corgi, Dachshund, English Toy Spaniel, French Bulldog, Golden Retriever, Havanese, Japanese Chin, King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, Lhasa Apso, Lion Dog, Maltese, Maltipoos, Miniature Schnauzer, Papillion, Pekingese, Pomeranian, Saint Bernard, Sharpei, Shih Tzu and West Highland White Terrier.

Determine the source of tear and face stains. The dog tear stain issue is more than an appearance problem. Tear staining can be traced to health and diet, as well as genetics. Make sure there are no underlying health problems causing the excessive tearing and staining.

Keeping your canine healthy is most important.

Dog tear stains might be a sign that your pet is ill. Ear infections, eye infections, eye irritations, allergies, yeast infections, and inflammation of the duct system are all possible reasons. These conditions are often painful and should be addressed immediately by your veterinarian.

Diet changes or minerals in drinking water can cause dog tear stains. Mineral issues can be remedied by the dog drinking distilled or reverse osmosis purified water.

Food sources or even plastic food bowls may be causing the staining that can be corrected. However, if you remove the tear stains and continue feeding a food that causes them, you won't solve the problem.

Changing the dog's pH slightly can do wonders in the tear stain war and help eliminate bacteria, the deep stain color and prevent yeast buildup. A preventative strategy best used once you have the tear stains removed or nearly removed.

500mg calcium carbonate, your basic antacid, twice daily helps change the pH of your dog's system and aids in preventing yeast or infection, thus treating dog tear stains from the inside out. Vinegar will work much like the calcium antacid in changing the pH of drinking water. Add a teaspoon of white cider vinegar to your dog's drinking water to control new tear stains. It may take a while for your pet to adapt to this water so start with a little less and gradually increase the amount of vinegar.

An option that can be discussed with your vet is a common eye drop called napthazoline, which dilates the tear ducts so more tears flow where they are supposed to instead of over the lids and onto the face.

Another possibility is to put your dog on a very low dose of antibiotics which will eliminate bacterial overgrowth. However, this should be a last resort, not used for continued treatment, and not be considered for puppies without their adult teeth.

Dog tear staining is often more complex than simple answers offer.

Veterinary consultation is appropriate in determining the source of a dog tear staining problem. Have your vet give the dog a complete exam to rule out any serious eye conditions before trying anything.

Home remedies do exist, using mixtures of milk of magnesia, corn starch, bleach, hydrogen peroxide, boric acid and lemon juice. However, harsh ingredients can irritate and make tearing worse. A stain remover should be free of alcohol or bleach. If such ingredients aren't mixed properly, using precisely the right strength, and applied safely, you could potentially harm your dog.

No solution should be allowed to wick through the facial hair or splash into the pet's eye, or into the eye area. For this reason, caution suggests you look to over-the-counter products, and refrain from using these home formulas.

Use a quality over-the-counter dog tear stain remover to safely, effectively and gently minimize the condition for a "satisfactory enough" rather than complete elimination result. Unless your pet is a show dog, this is not really a serious issue. A protective sterile ophthalmic ointment under the eyes, when applying stain remover, is an excellent idea. It will keep the eyes comfortable because the filmy barrier prevents irritation.

With living in an apartment, picking the right dog can be difficult-especially coming from a person who isn't partial to small dogs. After doing some research, I was surprised to find that there are numerous large-breed dogs that are well-suited for apartment living.

1. Mastiff - Mastiffs are huge so when my boyfriend told me they are actually perfect for apartments, I called him crazy. Come to find out, they really are! Because of their massive size, they tend to be lazy. Being calm-mannered dogs, they aren't yappers either. His parents have two mastiffs and I have only heard them bark when they feel there is danger. Also, they don't require a ton of exercise so a large backyard or constant walks are not necessary.

2. Greyhound - My cousin has a greyhound and it is, by far, the sweetest dog I have ever encountered. Though she is a large, lean dog, she sees herself as a lapdog, always trying to snuggle on the couch. Greyhounds are good apartment dogs because they are so mellow and sweet. They require a bit more exercise than a mastiff would but still not so that it would cut into your daily routine.

3. Great Dane - I would only recommend a Great Dane for someone that can make a commitment to daily jogs. Though Great Danes are mild mannered dogs that do not bark a lot and tend to be lazy around the house, they do need to get out a lot more than the other dogs listed.

You will need to be sure that when you are breeding a female boxer you make frequent and regular vet visits, most importantly when the delivery date is nearing.$40 to $50 is the normal cost for a typical check-up at the vet.Estimating a cost for the puppies during and after birth is also something to come up with. Ears cropped and tails docked is something the puppies will need to have done eventually.For each pup that will usually cost you around $500 or more.

Do not forget to register your boxer puppies with America Kennel Club (AKC) so that they will be official boxers. When selling your boxer puppies, you need to have health records and AKC certificate. Before you sell your puppies be sure that your adult boxer is AKC registered and if it is not you will need to have that completed.
