The Gentle Leader is a dog leash, harness or head collar (sometimes referred to as a Halti) designed to stop your dog from pulling while walking your dog. Will it actually stop your dog from pulling? Yes. It will stop your dog from pulling while on walks. But it is not really a training tool. It doesn't teach your dog anything else. And you have not established yourself as your dog's pack leader. The Gentle Leader dog leash is strictly a restraint mechanism. There is a huge difference between restraining your dog and training him. How does it work?

The Gentle Leader slides over the head and muzzle. When the dog pulls, pressure is applied from the back of the neck causing the dog to pull backward instead of pulling forward. It controls the dog's head. Whatever direction the head goes, the body must follow.

The advantages of the Gentle Leader are you get definite control of your dog on walks. The Gentle Leader is inexpensive. Although it does take getting used to, a dog can adapt to it rather quickly. You don't have to be a dog trainer to get him to respond to it.

The disadvantages of the Gentle Leader are that it is a restraining device rather than a training tool. Its purpose is really only for walking your dog. The dog will probably become "collar smart" which means you will have to use the Gentle Leader every single time you want to take your dog for a walk. It is not designed to work on other dog behaviors. Your dog may go through some spastic reactions while learning to wear it.

You will hear claims from head collar enthusiasts and others state that it is a humane device for dogs. It is no more humane than other tools such as training collars, martingale collars and pinch collars as long the person using them knows how to use them. In fact, I will go so far as to say that the latter tools will address more behaviors and make your dog more obedient than the Gentle Leader or head collar.

In conclusion, if all you want to do is be able to walk your dog without him pulling, the Gentle Leader dog leash will do the job. If you want total respect from your dog, I recommend a sound obedient training program. The money will be well spent if you get the right dog trainer and you commit to leading your dog.

Recently there has been an increase in popularity in using a head collar for dog training because it has been found that head collars would give you the better control over your dog. The two most popular head collars available in the market are the Halti Training Collar and the Gentle Leader Training Collar.

How Does The Collar Works

The Halti and the Gentle Leader collars provide control over a dog's direction and movement without restricting airflow, panting, drinking or grasping objects in his mouth. Pressure on this type of collar pulls the dog's head towards the handler. When you have control of your dog's head, you have control of the dog.

These training collars look more like a horse's halter, with a band going around the back of the head and another around the nose. The leash snaps onto the collar under the chin. When you pull on the leash, the dog's head will either be pulled down or to the side – this makes it virtually impossible for the dog to move ahead or pull you forward.

Why Train With the Halti Collar

Training with a Halti or Gentle Leader collar has some advantages over a traditional training collar. Head collars are usually more intuitive to use than a traditional training collar. If walking your dog is important to you, head collars make this much easier. Head collars also make it easy to keep your dog from pulling you when walking. Head collars are a good tool for those who are not strong enough to control a dog with a regular training collar.

Head collars can be effectively used to control dogs in difficult situations or where training the dog would require too much effort. This could be situations were you know you will have a hard time controlling the dog, and it can include times when the dog will have a difficult time with self-control. ItÂ’s better to physically restrain the dog with a head collar than have the dog learn to be out of control.

When to Use The Head Collar

A good time to use the head collar is when you are on an outing where you know there will be high level distractions and youÂ’re also aware that you will be paying more attention to having fun than training your dog. Training a dog with the head collar is most effective when done in combination with reinforcement training (giving your dog a reward for good behavior).

There are some dog owners who are hesitant to use the collar because they feel it looks more like a muzzle than a collar. You may even find them asking you about the collar and it may make you feel uncomfortable. You can take some time off to explain the benefits of using the head collars and tell them they can use it to aid in their dog training too!

Some common dog training collars are: the prong collar, the Halti, the Gentle Leader, the choke collar and the electronic collar.

Prong Collar

This collar is made up of metal prongs that have been linked together. When you apply a pulling pressure to the collar (via the leash), it gives the dog a little pinch that is meant to duplicate the effect of a mother dog's teeth when she grabs here pup by the scruff of the neck.

The prong collar is a safe and effective training tool as long as the fit is correct and the collar is used appropriately. The prong collar should not be used if your dog is one to consistently yank at his leash.

The prong collar should fit snugly against the dog's neck. A properly fitted collar should leave approximately ½ of a finger space in between your dog's neck and the prong tip. A collar that is any looser than that won't do its job and will needlessly chafe the dog's skin.

Halti and Gentle Leader

Both the Halti and Gentle Leader head halter devices look a lot like the harnesses that are used to control horses. While the prong collar is designed to condition behavior and movement, the head halter is designed to restrict or restrain your dog's movements. The thought behind the halter's design is that if you can control the head, the body will follow its movement.

When you pull on the attached leash the device closes the dog's mouth and restrains his head. These types of collars are great for dogs that lunge, bite or display other aggressive behaviors.

There are drawbacks, however, to using a head halter device. Most dogs will not take very easily to any device that positions a strap over its nose. You may have to struggle with your dog many, many times before he will submit to wearing it.

Another drawback is that pulling at your dog's head makes it a lot more likely that you'll inadvertently injure the dog's neck or back. To avoid injury, you should always make sure you're restraining your dog in the correct manner.

Choke Collar

The choke collar is one of those dog training devices that is often surrounded by controversy. Proponents of the choke collar point to its humane effectiveness, while critics say that the collar is more torture device than training tool. The truth is that what the collar becomes is largely dependent upon who is using it.

A properly fitted choke collar works by tightening around the dog's throat when the trainer pulls on the leash and then releasing pressure when the trainer does. If the collar is not put on correctly, however, the pressure will remain and the dog could truly choke to death. These collars are not meant for dogs that consistently pull at their leash or for inexperienced trainers. As is the case with head halters, the choke collar has the potential to cause injury to the dog's neck.

Electronic Collar

Just mention the option of an electronic dog collar and many dog owners (even some people with no pets at all) will look at you as if you have suggested training your dog with a stun gun.

The reality is that electronic collars can be a very humane way to train a dog. As with any other training device, however, whether or not it is used for purposes of cruelty is totally dependent upon the intentions and experience of the trainer.

The electronic collar works by allowing the trainer to give the dog small, electric shocks (via remote control) in order to modify its behavior. The intensity of the shock is left to the trainer. In general, the setting should be strong enough to make the dog's ears twitch. If the dog howls or yelps when the shock is delivered, then the setting is too high. Again, the electronic collar should only be used by experienced trainers.

If the hearing of a dog is amazing then you can only describe the ability to use the sense of smell as incredible. Dogs can be taught to find people buried many feet under snow or collapsed buildings. They can detect gas leaks, sniff out drugs or explosives and can even sense when a cow is in season!

When a dog is on the scent his nose is very moist and the molecules forming the scent are dissolved into this mucus and transferred by the nerve receptors to the brain. How many time more powerful than our smell is often asked. Some professionals believe it could be as much as 10 million times better than our sense of smell.

Some people then ask, how can a dog get lost, it should always be possible for it to find the way home? The answer can be find if you compare the life of the wolf in the open countryside and the built up environment most dogs live in. The number of different smells being piled one on top of another in an urban environment makes it much more difficult to follow familiar scents. In the open countryside there are plenty of different smells but not the confusion caused by humans.

Dogs sense of smell can be affected by a number of different things such as illness; distemper, hepatitis, diabetes; by infections or obstructions in the nose and by ageing.

How can the sense of smell cause problems for us and our dog?

  • Dogs are attracted to smells we find obnoxious. My Golden Retriever loves to roll in any foul smelling substances she can find... and comes back looking as pleased as punch!
  • Smelling food on the table or in the kitchen might prove too tempting for your dog to resist. A compliment to the cook I would suggest.
  • Talking about the kitchen, rubbish bins often located there are sources of great smells for dogs to go and investigate. This can not always be sensible as some foods and objects in the rubbish might be dangerous for the dog.
  • Poison left around for rats and slugs might be very interesting but dangerous for the dog.

How can we use the sense of smell to improve our training
?

  1. The use of food and the dog's ability to smell and find it.
  2. Use strong smelling treats in training.
  3. Treats kept in pocket and then your hand going into the pocket will keep your dogs attention.

Most owners now about treats being used as a training aid. The finding of ways to use treats to encourage the behaviours we want is what we need to consider.

quick collar type question?

My dog wears a regular buckle nylon collar that leaves a mark on her neck. The hair is shorter and when she doesnt have her collar on you can tell that she wears one. Not sure what thats called...

Have you considered a Fur Saver collar? They are most usually constructed of either chrome, brass or stainless steel links.

it works great on my dog. However I know some dogs absolutley hate it and it takes a while to get used to. My sisters dog clawed his face trying to get it off. Make sure someone shows you how to properly fit it. It is worth a try if you have a difficult dog.

Gentle Leader or Headcollar? Which one works better? Will not use Prong/Choke because not experienced enough.?

Just wondering which one works better for training a dog to not pull. I will not use Prong/Choke b/c I am not experienced enough to use one correctly. Thanks.
I know how to use them, and Tiger is a bit smaller than a Border Collie. Same body build.

Mutt, all those are worthy training options, IF you are trained in how to use them. An improperly used head collar is just as bad as an improperly used prong collar. It is admirable that you are seeking knowledge in something you are not familiar with prior to just jumping in and using it. Smart cookie!
Its difficult to explain full and proper use of these in text form. I would suggest that you call around and find a reputable trainer, who is experienced in the use of these, and can give you a private lesson to demonstrate them and teach you how to use them, that way you could try each one and that way, learn which works best for you. Also, if your guy is pulling, perhaps hes just not working hard enough. I imainge he would do well wearing a pack, thats carrying a little weight in it, this would give him a "job" and make him work more, which is going to serve to fulfil the mental need for work in him as well as the physical need for work. Also would not hurt to have a few lessons with your guy, Obedience is an excellent way to strengthen the bond with your dog, and teach him not to pull at the same time. icon smile Headcollar Dog

Retractable or nylon dog leash? And gentle leader, flat collar or choke chain. Which 2 go together best?

I have a lab, and need to know which ones are best, 1 from each group: choke chain, flat collar or gentle leader and: retractable leash or normal leash? He is like 70 lbs and I am like 59 lbs so he has control over me aka not the other way around.
I go to dog classes, he only pulls when we are at home and sees a deer in our 5 acer yard and jerks, so there is NO time for me to stop him. And the retractable leash is 16 ft and is xxlarg and for dogs up to 110 lbs.

I assume you are asking this because your dog is pulling you down the street. I am writing this for the use of a choke collar (and pinch collars) as training aids to help you teach your dog how to walk. At 59 lbs, I don't expect you are very old and would recommend that you talk to a trainer (or take a class). This would be a lot more effective than even using any of these collar and leash combinations - if your dog is well trained, the leash and collar make no difference.

I think choke chains (and even pinch collars) are great training tools, but you should learn how to use them before your first walk. Both are training tools, they aren't supposed to be used indefinitely for walks.

I started out using a choke collar for my 8 month old lab and have since switched to a pinch collar because she just pulled until she was weezing, choking, and still heaving against the chain. With the pinch collar, she walks on a loose leash. If she tugs or pulls, I do a quick tug to tighten the collar (and administer the pinch). She has learned really quick.

I switch up what collar I use - her regular collar, the choke collar, and the pinch collar. I also let her off the leash but leave whatever collar on (pinch or choke) while she runs around free during our walks or at the park. This teaches her that it's not the collar that causes the discomfort, it's her pulling on the leash. I also administer the tug even when she has just her regular collar on.

Another trick I learned when she begins to pull (especially just with her regular collar) is that I stop. I don't move forward, I don't acknowledge her pulling, I don't talk to her, nothing. I just stand there until she refocuses on me. Then I wait until she loosens the leash on her own. I then make her sit. After she sits, I say okay and then we start walking again. I do this every time she pulls - you'd be surprised how quickly they pick up that they need to have a loose leash before we walk. It can make for a long walk - but you'll be a lot happier on future walks.

I let my dog off her leash in safe areas (at the lake or park) and let her run around and chase ducks and geese and squirrels. I also let her swim and chase her retriever toy BEFORE we go on our standard walk - this seems to tired her out and then she is more mellow on our leash walks.

As far as a leash goes, I prefer the nylon (6 ft) leash. My dog walk buddy has a retractable leash and absolutely loves it, but I just don't feel like I have as much control of my dog when she's on a retractable leash.
