Fortunately for you, originations all over the world have adopted a system of assigning different dog breeds in broad categories by the type of job they were bred for. A great place to start your research is your national canine organization. The one to examine are: American Kennel Club, UK Kennel Club and Canadian Kennel Club.

Usually the following categories to separate the different dog breeds:

Hunting Dogs (Gundogs)

Working Dogs

Utility Dogs

Terriers

Toy Dogs

Hounds

Lets take a look at these categories in depth.

Hounds were bred for their keen sense of smell and sight. Again they were used (and still are) for hunting. Dogs in this group make great pets but must have lots of exercise if you are to make them happy in your family. Well known breeds include: Daschunds, Basset Hounds, Irish Wolfhounds, Deerhounds, Beagles, Whippets and Greyhounds. You may have noticed there great variation in stature in this group.

Hunting dogs were bred originally for searching for and recovering game. Typically they are easily trainable, loyal and companionable animals. They make fantastic pets and have a idealall-round temperament which makes for easy integration into homes with children. They do often need lots of exercise and crave attention which if not given often leads to behavior difficulties. The hunting dog group can be segmented into four sub-groups: Spaniels, Hunt/Point/Retrieve, Retrievers, and Setters.

Toy dogs are the tiny companions and lap animals of the canine catagories. Althoug each dog was used for a certain use, they are placed into this group for their size. Typically, toy dogs are amicable and faithful, and need lots of care. They are intelligent and are easily over indulged as their masters can be poor on obedience due to their diminutive size. In this group are: Chihuahuas, Pugs, Papillions, Yorkshire Terriers and Poodles.

In the beginning, all terriers were used in order to hunt unwanted rodents like . They are usually small dogs, as they needed to be lower to the ground to seize the vermin and other pests that they hunted. These dogs are often brave, and intensely resolute. They are ancient forms of breeds, as far – if not further – than the Middle Ages. Today terriers are thought of as handsome dogs, butthey are better suited tomore expert dog masters because of their more aggressive temperament. Some of the terriers include: Airedale, Boston, Welsh, Border, Wire Fox, Cairn, Jack Russell, Staffordshire, Scottish, Lakeland and West Highland White and Miniature Schnauzer.

Utility dogs are a group of many many different kinds of breeds put in the same catagory because of their non sporting beginnings. They have generally been bred for a specific purpose, but, these functions are greatly varied. Here you will find breeds like: Dalmations, English Bulldogs, American Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Shih Tzus and Poodles. Breeds in this group are often the oldest breeds recorded.

Working dogs have been designed for rescuing, guarding and searching. Example breeds in this group include: Great Danes, Collies, Rottweillers, Mastiffs, Corgis, German Shepherds, Dobermanns, Old English Sheepdogs, Newfoundlands and Boxers. Often called the “champions” of the dog world, being bred to succeed at their particular job.

Having shown you more information about the different groups of dog breed and their virtues you should be able to choose a group and dog suited to you and your family.

The German Shepherd Dog, or Alsatian, is a comparatively modern breed of dog, dating from 1899. As its name suggests, the breed has its origins in Germany and was bred as a herding dog. Today, the breed is most well known as a police dog. Because of its intelligence, obedience and protective nature, it is used by police forces around the world. Although, the German Shepherd is still used as an extremely effective working dog, it is also a wonderfully popular family pet.

The Origins of the German Shepherd

During the 19th century, in Germany, local communities would select and breed dogs with desirable qualities, such as obedience and intelligence, to aid in the job of herding and protecting sheep. The result was excellent sheepdogs, but they varied from one community to the next in appearance and ability. In an attempt to eradicate these differences, the Phylax Society was formed, in 1891, which aimed to standardize the dog breeds of Germany. Unfortunately, due to disagreements over the ideal traits of breeds, or what we would now call 'artistic differences', the Society lasted only three years.

However, the Phylax Society was influential in promoting the idea of standardized dog breeds. Consequently, Max von Stephanitz, who believed that dogs should be bred with the aim of acquiring excellent working animals, came across a dog that lived up to his ideal. He immediately purchased the dog, named it Horand von Grafrath and founded the Society for the German Shepherd Dog. Subsequently, Max von Stephanitz is credited with the creation of the breed.

A Change of Name

The breed was first exported to Britain in 1908. Oddly, the popularity of the breed increased after soldiers returning from World War I spoke enthusiastically about it. I say 'oddly', because, after the war, anti-German sentiment led the UK Kennel Club to change the breed's name to Alsatian Wolf Hound. Eventually, the 'Wolf Hound' was lost and the breed became known simply as the Alsatian. It was not until 1977, that UK Kennel Clubs reverted to the name German Shepherd Dog.

Appearance

The German Shepherd is one of the large breeds of dog, which grows to approximately 22 to 26 inches in height and weighs between 50 and 88lbs. According to the Kennel Club, the breed should have a domed forehead with a long muzzle and black nose. It also has brown eyes of a medium size and large erect ears. According to the breed specifications, the German Shepherd should have a long neck, which is raised when excited. Another prominent feature of the breed is a long bushy tail, which should reach the hock.

The breed has a variety of colors, the most common being black and tan or red and tan. However, German Shepherd's can also be all black, all white, sable, liver, brindle, blue and panda.

Temperament and Character

Unfortunately, in some quarters, the breed has a reputation for biting humans and attacking smaller dogs. However, reputable sources, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and American Veterinary Medical Association, argue that there is no accurate way to determine the bite rate of breeds, because of inaccurate reports and mixed breeding. Moreover, studies have shown that smaller dogs are much more likely to bite than larger dogs. Of course, due to the fact that German Shepherds are popular pets and often used for protection, the statistical analysis, on which claims of aggression in German Shepherds is based, is flawed.

The German Shepherd is a highly intelligent animal that thrives on having an active part of the family. The breed can be wary of strangers, which is what makes it a good guard dog, but once a German Shepherd has befriended you, you'll have a friend for life. Moreover, despite their unfair depiction, the breed makes a wonderful family pet, because it bonds extremely quickly with children. As with any dog, it is happy to share its home with other animals if trained correctly.

The German Shepherd Dog is a wonderfully loyal animal, which can make a marvelous family pet. Easy to train and a joy to be around, there is a good reason that this breed routinely ranks among the most popular in the UK and USA.

Dog Breed Guide
The larger the paw, the larger the footprint
In the mountains, a 4x4 SUV is almost a necessity if you plan to drive when it’s snowy. But if you live almost anywhere else, the “gas guzzlers” are a target of green scorn.

The voyages of ships of yore are sure to evoke all kinds of images in our minds.

Perhaps you're thinking of the romantic journeys across the high seas. Or maybe you are envisioning the hardships endured by the passengers and crew of long ago sea vessels. It might be the establishment of the great trading routes that's captured your imagination.

But, are you thinking about the evolution of dog breeds? If not, you should be!

Many breeds of dogs have histories that originated from the sea. However, sorting out what is pure rumor, folklore, or documented fact can be amusing at best! And just because something is folklore does not mean it's not true. Read on and decide for yourself!

Bolognese ~ Folklore: Centuries ago, these highly prized and popular dogs were taken aboard ships sailing in the Mediterranean. They were specifically meant to be presented as gifts to merchants and noblemen, with whom the sea captain wanted to establish trading relationship.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever ~ Folklore: In 1807 an English ship was wrecked off the coast of Maryland. All onboard the ship survived, including two St. John's water dogs (puppies). They were then cross-bred with local retrievers and the Chesapeake Bay Retriever was born.

Chinese Crested ~ Folklore: Chinese ships were sailing the coast of Africa, and picked up these dogs along the way, to keep the rodent population under control.

Coton De Tulear (the possible ancestors of the Bichon Frise) ~ Folklore: Sailing ships going from France to the West Indies, in the 15th Century, carried small white dogs as not only company for women, but to use as ratters. A particular ship (of unknown name) sank off the coast of Madagascar and everyone aboard perished. But the dogs managed to get to shore near the port of Tulear. Hence the name...Coton De Tulear.

Havanese (National dog of Cuba and its only native breed) ~ Folklore: This breed came to Cuba in the early 16th Century aboard the trade ships sailing from the island of Tenerife.

Portuguese Water Dog ~ Fact: Historically these dogs lived aboard boats and worked with fisherman. They acted as couriers between ships, and were taught to herd fish into nets and dive underwater to retrieve nets and gear.

Folklore: There's a claim that half the ships of the Spanish Armada had Portuguese Water Dogs onboard to carry messages from ship to ship. The Kerry Blue, the Irish Water Spaniel and the Poodle also claim that it's possible that they descended from the same ancestry as the Portuguese Water Dog, and all of these breeds have tales of the Spanish Armada in their historic lore.

Newfoundland ~ Fact: This breed lived aboard fishing boats, in Newfoundland, Canada. They hauled nets out to sea and retrieved both people and objects that fell into the waters.

Folklore: In the 15th and 16th Century, European explorers came to North America with Mastiffs, Sheepdogs and Waterdogs. The Newfoundland came about as an interbreeding of these dogs.

Skye Terrier ~ Folklore: A man-of-war ship from the Spanish Armada was wrecked off the coast of Scotland. A dog survived, and then bred with a local terrier - producing an offspring with the typical long silky coat of a Skye.

Teacup Chihuahua ~ Folklore: In the mid to late 1800's, Chihuahua's were considered excellent companions onboard vessels. Their diminutive size allowed them to chase vermin out of small spaces that other dogs could not reach.

Dog Training Secrets

Schutzhund dog training is not for everyone, but it certainly has its benefits. Schutzhund dog training started in Germany in the 1900s as a test for the working dog qualities of the German Shepherd dog breed. Training your dog using the Schutzhund method gives the dog the ability to protect its master, but show enough restraint to still obey its master despite highly stressful circumstances. For example, the dog should not be afraid to bite the arm of an assailant, but still have the presence of mind to let go if the master bids the dog to do so. Today, this type of dog training is a popular sport that tests the dog characters in three stages: obedience, tracking, and protection.

Obedience

This Schutzhund dog training stage is conducted in a large field and involves two dogs. One dog is left on a corner of the field while the handler works on the other dog. Then, after the first dog completes the course, the dogs switch places. The dog is taken through a series of exercises, such as heeling among a group of people, recalls, and retrieves. There is also a time in Shutzhund dog training that gunshots are fired and the dog is expected to remain in heeling position. This tests the dog's reactions to stressful situations. If the dog is too aggressive or shows fear, the dog doesn't pass this part of training.

Tracking

In this part of the training, the dog is asked to track a series of articles that are previously laid in a field. The dog then finds the articles and shows that he or she has found the article. Usually, the dog indicates this by lying down with the article between his or her front paws.

Protection

Training your dog using the Schutzhund method is not complete without the third stage, which is protection. The dog is tested on how he or she can protect his or her master and still have the presence of mind to obey its master through this. A decoy, who wears a heavily padded sleeve, then pretends to attack the master. The dog is expected to stop the attack by biting the padded sleeve. As part of the schutzhund dog training, the dog must also let go of the padded sleeve when given a command. Failure to do so will result to the dog not passing the test. As part of the schutzhund dog training protection phase, the dog is also asked to find a hiding decoy and to bark and keep the decoy until the handler dismisses him or her.

Competitions that feature the best of Schutzhund dog training abounds. There are several training levels in which your dog can compete.
