The purpose of this article is to improve the publicÂ’s knowledge about dogs, the West Highland Terrier in particular. Many people decide that they want a dog based off of appearance alone. While this may not be a terrible thing to do if the person has the ability to accommodate all types of dogs, for some individuals the care for specific types of dog breeds is not possible. The best way to avoid any surprises after the adopting or purchase of a dog is to understand the breed and what it takes to care for it. We will go over some of the basic characteristics of the West Highland Terrier to help you get a better understanding of the West Highland Terrier as a breed and possibly a new addition to your family.

The West Highland Terrier, or “Westie”, is a small high spirited breed with a shrill voice and insatiable appetite for companionship. The Westie is very easy to keep fed due to their small size at 11 inches and 19 lbs. The main drawback to this breed is the constant need for bathing since their snow white coat dirties easily and quickly. The Westie, as small as they are, will make a great protector of the home, as I am not sure they know their actual size. This is an ideal breed for families and individuals alike.

In the mountains, a 4x4 SUV is almost a necessity if you plan to drive when it’s snowy. But if you live almost anywhere else, the “gas guzzlers” are a target of green scorn.

The voyages of ships of yore are sure to evoke all kinds of images in our minds.

Perhaps you're thinking of the romantic journeys across the high seas. Or maybe you are envisioning the hardships endured by the passengers and crew of long ago sea vessels. It might be the establishment of the great trading routes that's captured your imagination.

But, are you thinking about the evolution of dog breeds? If not, you should be!

Many breeds of dogs have histories that originated from the sea. However, sorting out what is pure rumor, folklore, or documented fact can be amusing at best! And just because something is folklore does not mean it's not true. Read on and decide for yourself!

Bolognese ~ Folklore: Centuries ago, these highly prized and popular dogs were taken aboard ships sailing in the Mediterranean. They were specifically meant to be presented as gifts to merchants and noblemen, with whom the sea captain wanted to establish trading relationship.

Chesapeake Bay Retriever ~ Folklore: In 1807 an English ship was wrecked off the coast of Maryland. All onboard the ship survived, including two St. John's water dogs (puppies). They were then cross-bred with local retrievers and the Chesapeake Bay Retriever was born.

Chinese Crested ~ Folklore: Chinese ships were sailing the coast of Africa, and picked up these dogs along the way, to keep the rodent population under control.

Coton De Tulear (the possible ancestors of the Bichon Frise) ~ Folklore: Sailing ships going from France to the West Indies, in the 15th Century, carried small white dogs as not only company for women, but to use as ratters. A particular ship (of unknown name) sank off the coast of Madagascar and everyone aboard perished. But the dogs managed to get to shore near the port of Tulear. Hence the name...Coton De Tulear.

Havanese (National dog of Cuba and its only native breed) ~ Folklore: This breed came to Cuba in the early 16th Century aboard the trade ships sailing from the island of Tenerife.

Portuguese Water Dog ~ Fact: Historically these dogs lived aboard boats and worked with fisherman. They acted as couriers between ships, and were taught to herd fish into nets and dive underwater to retrieve nets and gear.

Folklore: There's a claim that half the ships of the Spanish Armada had Portuguese Water Dogs onboard to carry messages from ship to ship. The Kerry Blue, the Irish Water Spaniel and the Poodle also claim that it's possible that they descended from the same ancestry as the Portuguese Water Dog, and all of these breeds have tales of the Spanish Armada in their historic lore.

Newfoundland ~ Fact: This breed lived aboard fishing boats, in Newfoundland, Canada. They hauled nets out to sea and retrieved both people and objects that fell into the waters.

Folklore: In the 15th and 16th Century, European explorers came to North America with Mastiffs, Sheepdogs and Waterdogs. The Newfoundland came about as an interbreeding of these dogs.

Skye Terrier ~ Folklore: A man-of-war ship from the Spanish Armada was wrecked off the coast of Scotland. A dog survived, and then bred with a local terrier - producing an offspring with the typical long silky coat of a Skye.

Teacup Chihuahua ~ Folklore: In the mid to late 1800's, Chihuahua's were considered excellent companions onboard vessels. Their diminutive size allowed them to chase vermin out of small spaces that other dogs could not reach.

Despite the odds of Labrador dog training, it is not impossible to triumph in it. This breed's intelligence, in addition to their gentle, energetic and working personality, is what makes Labradors the most dependable and obedient breed of dog in the world.

However, it cannot be denied that few of the many owners of Labrador Retrievers complain about their dog's excessive barking. This oftentimes result to owners having to turn over their dogs to dog shelters or worst, to abandon the once beloved pet to die due to starvation, thirst or sickness. But these owners should know that dealing the problem this way is not the very best solution. Excessive barking can be possibly stopped without having to sacrifice the dog's welfare.

We are all aware of the fact that barking is a dog's natural reaction. Dogs bark when a stranger approaches the house or when they see or hear something strange. Dogs may also tend to bark when they are hurt or afraid. These reasons are appropriate enough because most owners want their dogs to be watch dogs. But problem occurs when a dog barks excessively that is annoying to you or your neighbors.

The first step in dealing with this problem is to determine the reason or the cause of the barking. Does your dog barks when nobody's at home and he is outside and he wants to go inside? Dog inside the house while everyone is away is not a problem. You can bring him inside the house and settle him in an area that is comfortable yet prevents him from destruction if he still at his destructive stage.

Shouting will only make matters worst. The dog will think that you are also barking and has joined in. It helps if you can call him and have him lie down and stay since dogs that are lying down do not bark much.

Be patient and consistent. Always remember that training a dog to do something does not happen overnight. You need to take one step at a time and believe that the problem will end sooner as long as you keep on trying. Using a one-word command is also another great way to modify your pet's behavior. Try the word 'enough' or 'quiet' and always use the same word with the same tone of voice. Have everyone in the family use the same command.

Labrador dog training is one sure way to help stop your dog's excessive barking. You may also want to use anti-bark collars or have debarking done by your veterinarian.
