German Shepherds make excellent guard dogs for a number of reasons. They are strong, clever and highly obedient which makes training German Shepherds a pleasant task. Only specific dogs have the ability to be trained to work with people and the public. Guard dogs are used by the police, private security companies and for personal use. Many people have bought a German Shepherd as a family dog and if the dog shows potential during basic obedience training they might want to advance and train the dog to be a guard dog.

Training should start when the dog is still young because this is when the dog will want to learn. You can train your German Shepherd the basic skills of obedience training and scent discrimination yourself without any assistance. After your German Shepherd has mastered the basics and if you are prepared to advance you might want to approach your local dog club for advice in training a guard dog. In order for your dog to become an official guard dog you will have to attend guard dog trials. Guard dogs are required to complete various tests as well as be able to past a character test.

The following criteria are included in most guard dog trials:

  • Basic obedience exercises
  • Scent discrimination
  • No gun shyness
  • Protective instinct
  • Listening skills
  • Following of orders

Trainers and officials will assist you in preparing your German Shepherd for guard dog training trials. Your German shepherd needs to be able to perform a number of exercises in order to pass the test. Some examples of the exercises asked in guard dog training are:

  • Simulated attacks on the dog and its master
  • Flight of the attacker
  • Pursuit by the dog
  • Barking and alerting of danger
  • Locate hiding persons
  • Keep a supposed criminal in place

Having a German Shepherd trained as a guard dog can be an asset to your personal protection and the safety of your family. Remember that not all dogs are able to under go the advance training of becoming a guard dog as it requires special behavioral traits and personality.

Many hunters prefer to train their hunting dog themselves; this is for a few reasons. Oftentimes dogs will only respond and obey one person when taking commands; if this person isn't the hunter, there will be plenty of problems in the field. The other reason is that the hunter can have complete control over what his dog learns, and how he learns it. A hunter will genuinely have more trust in a dog if he's played a large part in the training process. While it may seem overwhelming at first, training a dog isn't that difficult; most hunters take great pride and enjoy the process. There are some supplies however that every hunter should use when training his hunting dog.

One of the simplest, yet most effective dog training supplies is the use of the dog treat. This technique is well known and used for good reason; it is quite possibly the most effective way to train a dog. A good way to teach your dog obedience and willpower is to put the treat on his nose and not allow him to eat it until you say so. This is certainly a difficult trick for any dog to accomplish, but with time and patience on the hunter's part, it can be done. The longer the dog is able to leave the treat on his nose the better. When the hunter does tell the dog to get the treat, the dog will learn that when he listens to his owner, good things will happen. It's best when a dog is just starting out to use a lot of treats in training, but as training advances many prefer to alternate the reward of the treat with the reward of affection. When a hunter is out in the field and the dog performs well, the hunter will probably not have a treat for the dog, so the dog needs to learn that his owner's attention is just as important.

Another tool many dog trainers use is the whistle. This can be used in a few different ways, and how you choose to use it will be up to your own preference. Most trainers use the whistle to get the dog's attention; if the dog isn't paying attention, or is far out in the field, blowing one short blow on the whistle is an effective way to turn your dog. The other way in which trainers use the whistle is for punishment. While a short blow won't bother them, a longer, harder blow will. When they do something wrong this can be an effective way to let them know that it's wrong. Some trainers even use the whistle in both ways; either way, your dog is bound to learn the lesson.

Kennel cough is known as a very common infection and it is a frequent type of cough experienced by many dogs around the world. The kennel cough can go away on its own after a period of time, maybe within two weeks at most. It is referred to as tracheobronchitis medically because it affects the tranches of a dog with bronchitis.

There are many viruses and bacteria in the air that leads to the infection of kennel cough. Bordetella bronchiseptica is the bacteria that is responsible for the major infections of kennel cough. It can also be caused by the viruses canine parainfluenza and canine distemper. From different studies and researches Veterinary practitioners around the world have discovered that dogs get infected only when they remain in the company of other infected dogs for a long time. In other words, it will have to require a large amount of bacteria and viruses attacking at the same time to actually lead to an infection, or disease. In that case, it is advised that you should keep your dogs away from other infected animals to reduce the risk of the infection to the barest minimal.

When there is an swelling of the trachea of the dog, it will be observed that the dog begins to have spasmodic, dry coughs which is an indication of the infection of kennel cough. In this case, there is a frothy, white discharge that comes with every cough. Most times the eye lining membrane of the dog is also inflamed, this is known as conjunctivitis; there can also be some releases from the nose in some cases of this cough, this is liken to a case of the dog having a flu or so. The good thing about the kennel cough infection is that it is minor and does not lead to death unlike other infections in dogs. But care should be taken to handle the infection well, by reporting to the vet doctor.

The kennel cough is easily detected in a vet clinic through the evaluation of the dog's medical records and other examinations. The dog is made to cough always if you rub often on its throat, this is as a result of the condition. A kennel cough condition can become very complicated making the dog feel very bad and sometimes it can emit some green and yellow discharge, if this is the case, then there will be a need to investigate more and run more test to ascertain the level of infection and also to get the way out of every complication in relationship with the kennel cough.

The best way to prevent your dog from being infected with this, is to always take it for immunisation regularly, this way the dog will always remain in good health. The best way to prevent the kennel cough is just to give the dog vaccines to guard against the infection.. Prevention they say is better than cure, and that is the exact case with your dog and the kennel cough infection.

Antibiotics are the most common medication given to dogs diagnosed with kennel cough. When the antibiotic is administered it goes into the body to curb the disease so that further complications does not arise.
