K9 Dog Training

Distractions are a problem for most people. Dog owners work with their dogs endlessly on their obedience but a few key factors are either skipped completely or they are not given the right amount of attention and this creates a dog that is easily distracted.

Let's dive right in...

Mistake #1: Your training lacks motivation. Your dog is simply not motivated by you. They find the distractions around them more interesting and in this case why will not listen.

Several things can cause this.However, it is almost always a case of the dog owner not understanding how to get their dogs motivation. This is your first task when training your dog. Find out what motivates them, what gets them really pumped up and interested in you.

When you have that, you can start to train your dog. Distractions will become pointless to the dog because you, in a sense, are their biggest distraction. They are highly focused on you and what you have.

Mistake #2: Pushing the dog. Okay so you have been training for a few days and your dog is sitting nicely in your house. You take them to the groomer and ask for the sit, you dog does not do anything. They just stand there. You ask again, no response. You ask again, no response, then you get frustrated.

Dogs are situational. They do not understand that when you ask for a sit in the house and when you ask for a sit at the groomer that they should sit. You have to train them do this. This applies to all locations.

You have taken the dog from the distraction free zone of your house into a zone that has dozens of distractions. Expecting them to just get it and understand it, is unfair and counter-productive.

When you take your dog to new locations, begin the training as if they have no idea what "sit" means.

If you dog is sitting on verbal command only at the house, once you introduce them to the new location and they are understanding that sit means sit at the new location, you can then start to ask for a sit at the new location and expect them to respond.

Mistake #3: Adding to many distractions to early. When adding distractions add them gradually. Your dog should be performing a behavior reliably before you move to the next level of distraction.

Imagine your are in your house. You put your dog in a down and then toss their favorite toy or treat in front of them. This the first time you have done this so the dog gets up. You correct them (which you shouldn't but that is another article) and repeat the exercise.

You dog remains in the down so you think, hey, I'll toss a pack of hot dogs down. While I'm being dramatic for the purpose of this article, this is what a lot of dog owners do without knowing they are doing it.

You are adding far to much distraction early and the dog is learning to fail instead of learning to succeed.

In the end, add distractions gradually. Understand that your dog has to generalize a behavior before they can do it in a new location, become a highly motivating distraction to your dog and be consistent. Your dog will behave in all locations at all times.

If you have a disability or some other medical condition, chances are very good that you can still enjoy the companionship of a dog just like anyone else. It has been show that people with disabilities often have improved their quality of living by having a dog present in there homes and this is due to a number of factors. Having a disability does not have to put a damper on your relationship with your dog and their are a number of things you can do to maximize the quality of your relationship with your dog.

Dogs require care just like any other creature and this often involves giving shots, grooming, and other activities which will require your efforts. Having a disability can sometimes hinder your ability to perform these activities so you may need to turn to other sources of help, such as your veterinarian, or an in dog care representative, in order to perform these required tasks. There are many individuals who would be willing to make house visits in order to help you care for your dog including dog sitters, your own family, and perhaps some of your close neighbors. Most dog sitters are trained to handle and care for dogs so chances are they will know how to work with your dog in order to provide him the care that you are unable to do when it comes to these types of activities.

There are an unlimited number of activities that you can participate in with your dog that do not require a lot of effort on your part. Dogs love to chase and fetch and a great way to allow them to do so is by using flashlights or laser pointers. By simply moving your wrist just a little bit in order to shine the light onto the floor, you can provide your dog with hours of fun by teasing him with the light so as to make him chase it. There are other remote control toys that you can purchase that will provide your dog with plenty of entertainment as well such as remote control cars, stuffed animals, and so on. Both the laser pointer and remote control toys are excellent sources of exercise for your dog and do not require a lot of physical activity on your part.

Many dogs are trained to assist humans in some of the more simple functions of daily life like walking, seeing, and so on. If this pertains to you, then you may benefit from getting a dog that is able to assist you in some or many of these functions. If you're concerned about bringing your dog out into the public and not being able to bring him to many places that you want to go, don't worry because assistance dogs can be taken anywhere that dogs trained for leading the blind or def are allowed.

There are a number of shortcuts you can take when performing daily activities around the house for your dog. One great example is feeding strategy. You may consider saving a little effort by pre-packing your dogs food into individual serving size bags so when it comes time to feed your dog, all you have to do is dump the contents into their dog bowl. This will save you some effort of having to pick up the dog bowl and move it around in order to get it filled. If you have trouble bending over or crouching down to pick the dog bowl up off the floor, then you may want to consider purchasing a stand which will hold your dog's food dish up off the ground which will make it easier for you as well as your dog.

If you have a disability which prevents you from exerting a lot of physical activity, then you may not be able to walk your dog like you would normally want to. One option that you can consider is hiring someone to walk your dog for you, or perhaps even convincing a neighborhood kid or adult to take your dog for a walk on a regular basis. There is always someone that is willing to help walk your dog for you. If you have a fenced in yard, you may be able to get by without having to walk your dog if you simply allow them to run around in that yard on numerous occasions throughout the day. This will also allow them to get the exercise they need.

Just because you have a disability does not mean that you can't have a dog and you can enjoy all of the pleasures and happiness that any dog owner gets by having that level of companionship. If you have a disability, there are ways to continue to provide your dog with a healthy and happy lifestyle without having to make your life any different.
