I just bought my dog a Mendota leather collar, and was wondering if it is safe for the leather for it to be in water constantly?

Reason being is that my fiance and I take our dog to the lake for hours a day just about every weekend. So should I take his collar off for swim time? Or will the leather be ok and stay pretty and healthy?

PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU SUGGEST
I do NOT want collars for cats or dog, I want them for myself.
I do NOT want big chunky things of brushed steel or leather with great big studs or steel rings.
I DO want ones that look like pieces of jewellery but are actual lockable collars. They need to be femenine and pretty or bejewled.
Please do NOT just look on google or a similar search and give me a random page, I have been through hundreds, so much so that I am dreaming about collars (not that I mind).
Please do NOT just say look on e bay.

MY Dog was lost or possibly taken home by someone visiting Panama City Beach, St. Patricks Day weekend. March 17,18,19. She was last seen Saturday nite St. Patricks Day.PLEASE if anyone knows someone that was in Florida last weekend and brought a cute little black dog home,she has long hair,black and tanned, a limp, her right rear leg was injured in December, she has or had a leather collar with spikes on it. We rent a condo on the Beach and the upstairs condo is rented every week, obviously the gate wasn't closed by the new renters that weekend.
