Overview

This breed was developed during the 1800s came about as a cross between the Irish Setter, Labrador, Water Dog, and St. John's Newfoundland. Many believe the Collie to be also in the bloodline of this dog. These dogs are brilliant swimmers and bird retrievers, but they also make wonderful companion dog. This breed is usually confused with the Labrador and Golden Retriever, although they are in a category of their own. This breed does remarkably well in hunting, watch dogging, tracking and obedience. Given the correct training, this breed can do extremely well variety of sports.

Temperament

The Flat Coated Retriever has a cheerful character, and will get along with most people. They are also very good with children and other dogs. The Flat Coated Retriever is a very clever breed that is always keen to learn, but they do need human companionship and love in return. This breed does adapt well to a kennel setting, and has to be a part of the family although they are very fond of the outdoors. This breed will creep into the hearts of people very easily, as they have very charming and fun loving personalities. The Flat Coated Retriever will make a superb companion for any family.

Care

The Flat Coated Retriever requires a very small amount of grooming and trimming, but should be brushed on a weekly basis. Their coat should be maintained, particularly after they have been outdoors for extensive periods of time. It is imperative to be careful when brushing these dogs, especially when they are wet or has been in cold temperatures.

Training

The Flat Coated Retriever is an extremely sharp and trainable dog, and they make wonderful trainees. This breed is incredibly cheerful and full of energy, so their training should be consistent. Their exercise should however be not too repetitive; otherwise they will loose interest fairly quickly and get bored. Discipline is not necessary, and correction and constructive support will work best for the Flat Coated Retriever. If the training sessions is full of fun and a mix of techniques, this breed dogs will excel a lot further.

Health problems

The Flat Coated Retriever is a diligent and healthy breed. These dogs have lots of stamina by nature, and will stay mostly healthy with a lot of exercise and rest. Standard tests and clearances for inherited conditions are vital, and these dogs will need these on a regular basis. There are also a few medical conditions to be aware of, and they are hip dysplasia, diabetes, epilepsy and deafness.

Overview

The first Cavalier King Charles Spaniels were originally recorded in paintings from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries as small dogs that were regularly found in the houses of royalty and in court. The largest supporter of these dogs used to be King Charles II, and he was usually seen with several of these dogs. During that time these dogs were used to attract fleas, and were also used as a way to cure stress ailments.

Temperament

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have wonderful personalities, and is ideal dogs for families, couples and even single people. These dogs are inquisitive and playful by nature, but also like to just lie on their owner's lap. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel likes to spend time with humans, and requires a lot of attention on a daily basis. These dogs does not like to be left alone for extended periods of time, and might become destructive or even nervous when this happens. Seeing that this is a dog that loves to chase, they may require proper socialisation to not chase other animals in the home. This is not an aggressive dog, and will get along well with other dogs. These dogs love to please their owners, and are very easy to train.

Care

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel should be brushed often with a firm hair brush. Bathing should only be done if it is deemed necessary. The feathered hair on the ears of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a tendency to tangle, and should by groomed often to prevent this from happening. It is also important to trim the hair between the pads on the feet of these dogs, and check their ears for obstructions. It is important that these dogs are warm and dried properly after bath. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is an average shedding dog.

Training

This is an extremely intelligent dog, and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is very eager to learn. These dogs will do very well in hunting and agility if they receive the correct training. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel does well in competitive obedience training, and they also make wonderful therapy dogs. These dogs will respond positively to training that involves praise and fair training methods.

Health problems

Although the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a toy breed, they are amazingly healthy. But there are some serious health problems that these dogs struggle with at times. Many of these can be eliminated if these dogs are bought from a trustworthy breeder. Some of the health conditions these dogs struggle with include syringomyelia , mitral valve heart disease, patellar luxation, Cataracts, otitis externa and an early commencement of hearing loss.

Overview

The Coton is connected to the French Bichons and the Italian Bolognese. It is believed that they came to Madagascar with French troops, and was almost unknown until they were reintroduced to Europe and America. The Coton has been a prized companion dog of the rich people of Tulear in the southern part of Madagascar. Although this breed is still fairly uncommon, they are very popular with the Madagascar rich people.

Temperament

The Coton de Tulear is attentive and protective of its owners and families, and will form very strong bonds with them. They will alert them to danger by barking, but only when it is really required. This is a very intelligent breed that will take all the attention and affection they can get. The Coton is very social dog and will enjoy all outings and experiences with its family. The Coton de Tulear dogs get along well with children and other animals.

Care

The Coton De Tulear is a high maintenance dog when it comes to grooming, and their long coats needs a daily brushing. It is important that all dead hairs should be combed out. The excess hair in the inner ears and between the pads should also be removed. These dogs do not have to be bathed more than two times during the year, and their coats must not be cut with scissors. This breed sheds almost no hair, and is ideal for people having problems with allergies.

Training

Coton de Tulears are highly trainable, but they do have a tendency to be somewhat headstrong and obstinate. These dogs are very endearing and want to please their owners. All of this makes them open to positive training methods that include praise and small rewards. This breed is quick to learn both good and bad habits and have a natural talent for performing tricks. The Coton de Tulear is an ideal obedience and agility dog, and they love competition and being the centre of attraction. These dogs need consistent training and obedience classes.

Health problems

The Coton De Tulear is one of the healthiest dog breeds of dogs, and they have no known health problems. In the United States all dogs must complete a blood chemistry test as well as general health test to meet the criteria for breeding status in the Coton de Tulear registry. These exams look for conditions such as cherry eye, progressive retinal atrophy, patellar luxation and canine hip dysplasia.

Overview

The first spaniels started appearing during the early 1600s, and the Cocker and Springer Spaniels were seen as the same breed until the 1800s. The Cocker Spaniels were considered to be 25 lbs and used for woodcock, and the English Springers were measured at about 45 lbs and their purpose was to spring a game bird into the air so that a hawk could retrieve it. Today, Springer Spaniels flush and retrieve their game.

Temperament

The English Springer Spaniel is a friendly, outgoing and kind dog. They are brave, highly intelligent and also earnest. The English Springer Spaniel loves people and get along well with children. The English Springer Spaniel flourishes on human attention and likes to be with their families as much as possible. These dogs might become destructive and bark excessively when left alone for too long. The Springer Spaniel likes other pets, but may not be tolerant of same sex dogs. They are not appropriate for homes with pet birds.

Care

The field-type Springer is quite easy to maintain, and if they are brushed often with a firm hair brush, their coats will stay in a good condition. The bench-type Springer requires some more attention. Both of these types will need to be bathed and dry shampooed, but not too often. Tit is also important to check their ears often for infections. Springer Spaniels with longer coats will mat if not brushed enough. The hair on their paws should also be trimmed to stop burrs from becoming fixed. The Spaniels with longer coats will pick up burrs and branches easily, and should be combed after they have been outside. This is an average shedding breed, but the do shed constantly.

Training

English Springer Spaniels will profit from early on thorough socialisation and obedience training. It is important that handlers treat these dogs with purpose and fairness, and that their training sessions have enough praise and consistency. This breed will also stand out in agility, fly-ball, tracking, retrieving and obedience. The Springer Spaniel is a very eager hunting dog that also has the capacity to be an excellent therapy dog.

Health problems

English Springer Spaniel is prone to a few hereditary defects and these include hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, retinal dysplasia, epilepsy and Phosphofructokinase deficiency which are a blood disorder. Springer Spaniels are also likely to have problems with ear infections because of their droopy ears. Although not very common, these dogs have a few allergies to food and environment from time to time.
