Are agility competitions only for pure-bred dogs?

My mixed-breed dog is taking agility classes currently. His teacher said it's fine for the class if he's a mutt. But in his class, all the others are pure-bred dogs. Can only pure-bred dogs compete in agility competitions? Are we wasting our time? He really likes agility and I want to keep doing it with him. I don't know what dogs you have looked at already but I love the Bull Terrier they are loyal and good with family environments but are also protective. And not a whole lot of people have them so I didn't jump on any band wagon. Good luck and I am sure that any dog you chose you will love.
