Would you believe that you can now use your dogs fat as a treatment for arthritis? Sounds crazy but it is true. New technology in veterinary medicine exists that is bringing stem cell therapy using fat to dogs as a way to treat arthritis.
Stem cells are primitive, undifferentiated cells within the body. They have the ability to change into any type of tissue within the body such as bone, tendon, cartilage, muscle, nerve, etc. When we talk about stem cells, we group them into two types, embryonic and adult. Embryonic stem cells are the controversial ones since they come from fetal tissue and they have the ability to create an entire person or animal. Adult stem cells are cells that are found in almost every type of tissue in the body and have the capability to differentiate into any type of tissue but not an entire person or animal.
Although embryonic stem cells are extremely powerful, they do have some disadvantages associated with trying to use them. One is trying to get them since they come from fetal tissue and their use is highly controversial. The second problem with using them is that because they are from another person or animal, they are considered foreign material and the body may reject them. Adult stem cells, although not as powerful, have the advantages that they are easy to obtain, and because they come from the same person that is receiving them, there is no chance of rejection by the body.
In dogs, we are using technology to obtain adult stem cells from fat tissue and then use these cells as a treatment for osteoarthritis. In studies, with a single injection, some dogs are showing dramatic improvement in lameness for several months to over a year.
The stem cells being used for this are obtained from fat within the body. Fat, or adipose as it is medically termed, is a great source of adult stem cells, having a 500 greater yield of stem cells than bone marrow for the same amount. The nice part about this is that by using fat, the stem cells do not need to be cultured which usually takes a week or longer. This means that once the fat is harvested, the turnaround time to being able to treat the patient with the adult cells is as quick as 48 hours.
Stem cells work in a number of ways to help with osteoarthritis and other conditions. The main way is that they release substances called trophic factors which stimulate the other cells around the area to do things. They also have anti-inflammatory properties and can differentiate into any cell to stimulate repair of damaged tissues.
The process that is involved with using these cells to treat arthritis in dogs is relatively simple. The first step is harvesting the fat. This procedure does require the dog to be anesthetized and is a sterile surgical procedure so that the fat does not become infected. Fat is obtained from one of three locations in the body where there is always an abundance of fat, the inguinal region, the thoracic region, or the falciform fat which is in the abdomen. Only 15 grams of fat are necessary which is about the size of a large test tube.
Once the fat is harvested, it is sent overnight to a company that processes the fat and extracts the stem cells from it. The company can do this within 12 hours and ships it back overnight so it is back at your doctors hospital within 48 hours from the time it was harvested. The cells are packed in a sterile syringe, ready to be injected into the affected, arthritic joints.
Injecting of the cells can usually be done with just sedation. Although the cells can be injected into the bloodstream and will have an effect at the arthritic joints, it has been found to be more effective if it is injected directly into the affected joints. With a good sample of fat submitted for processing, up to 4 joints can easily be injected with the quantity of cells that are returned.
Results from the stem cells being injected usually take about a month to fully manifest and can last for several months to over a year in some patients. Complications from the procedure are minimal with irritation and swelling at the injection sites and fluid pocket formation where the fat was harvested as the most common problems seen.

Small dogs or lap dogs or comforters as they were once called have a very extensive history, encompassing several thousand years. Small breeds were often kept by nobility and given as presents to royal figures. It was also thought that small breeds were good for ones health. The Pekingees, pug and King Charles Cavalier Spaniel are three examples.
Many dog owners have a preference for small dogs over larger breeds, and for many different reasons. However, by virtue of their diminutive size, these dogs are much more affordable to keep, need less exercise in relation to larger breeds in general, and are simple to transport for example.
Many owners of larger dogs, and often those thinking of caring for a new dogs avoid smaller breeds, because of the perceived differences in their behaviour, in relation to larger dogs. It is thought, and wrongly of course, that smaller dogs are by nature, yappy, aggressive, possessive, over protective and demanding,, and so on.
If this assumption is not true, then why do so many small dog owners experience problems with their dogs behaving aggressively towards other dogs and humans and displaying possessive and demanding behaviours etc?
To get an understanding of the problem, we need to begin at the beginning. All puppies are cute and adorable, even the largest breed was small and cuddly at one time. However, the small breeds tend to retain their puppy looks and size, long after the cute Rottweiler puppy has grown and gained 50 Kg in weight, for instance
Researchers have found that humans have developed a biological response to 'cute' things, especially baby animals. It is thought the need to nurture and protect, perceived defenceless creatures is automatic.
This is where problems often begin; the owner over protects the dog, may carry him round, let him sleep on the bed or jump on the furniture when he chooses, and picks him up in the presence strange dogs, and gives in to his demands for attention. This is often done through the misguided notion that the dog needs protecting, by virtue of his size and 'baby like' qualities.
So how is this all worked out in the dogs mind? Although our domestic dogs are very different in many ways to his ancestor, the wolf, he has inherited much of his ancestors instinctual behaviours. A part of this instinctual blue print,comes the desire to be part of a group or pack. Although most dogs are more than happy to be the follower in their human pack, if their is no obvious leader, or the dog is getting signals from his owner that he is the leader of the pack, then the dog will have no option but to fill the role, as this is how life is played out in the dogs world.
Over time, the dog may show behaviours that to the experienced eye would be considered dominant, however, to the dogs owner these behaviours are seen as either breed specific, for example, 'that's how Chihuahuas's are', or part and parcel of the dogs personality, eg 'he's always been this way'. This kind of behaviour would be a cause for concern if seen in a larger dog, but somehow overlooked, or not considered serious in many smaller breeds.
There are a number of behaviours that are common to small dogs acting dominantly, so much so, that this type of behaviour observed in smaller breeds, has inherited the label 'small dog syndrome' or 'little dog syndrome'. Some of the common behaviours that characterise 'small dog syndrome' are listed below.
Much can be done to turn this problem around, however, owners must first consider the role they play in encouraging this type of behaviour in their dogs. Owners must come to realise that their small breed dogs are in fact animals and not little humans.
Secondly, owners must understand that it is natural for dogs to be a part of a 'pack' and more importantly, a pack in which they would much prefer to be a follower, than a leader. Understanding these two concepts alone, will help greatlyreduce the problem.
In terms of retraining, owners must communicate to their dogs that they are the leader, provider, and protector of the team. This can be done by controlling all of the dogs resources, for example, food, toys, treats, walks, and favourite places of rest, and allowing the dog access to them when the owner decides.
All demanding behaviour, for example barking for treats or to be picked up and so on, should be ignored, and all appropriate behaviour praised.
Aggressive and possessive behaviour towards other humans by the dog can be dealt with by having a place for the dog to go to when the owner is interacting with others. This may be to his crate, or a cushion in the corner of the room for example.
Owners should be aware that retraining takes time, especially in the case of dogs who have been allowed to display this kind of behaviour for a long time. With patience and repetition however, the dog will be content to become a follower, rather than the leader, of his human pack.

When a pet is lost, a pet ID tag is often the only way to find its owner. In the growing US pet market, the demand for pet tags is booming. Annual ID tag sales now surpass $155 million with more than 18 million pet tags sold.
Pet tags include the name of the pet and owner, and the ownerÂ’s address, phone number, and other relevant information. Artwork and logos may also be included. Pet tags can be designed using different materials, such as aluminum, brass, metal, plastic, and stainless steel, and in a wide range of colors, shapes and sizes (small, large and extra large). Tiny pint-size tags are especially designed for kittens, puppies and other small pets. These tags contain name, address and telephone number of pet owner. Each tag comes with a hole and is designed to be hung from a collar.
Creating and designing a pet tag is an art and big business. Durability and legibility of the tag determines whether the lost pet will reach its home or not. Hardware to wear the tag is equally important and should be of good quality. All tags should have an eyelet to put it in collar of the pet. The size of pet should be considered while selecting tags. Lightweight tiny tags are best for small size dogs and kittens. Tiny tags are still large enough to carry four lines of information just like normal-size tags. Pets should not be burdened with more than one tag.
Plastic tags can be chewed by the pet, especially teething puppies. They may be break proof but not chew proof. Quality plastic tags should be preferred. Stainless steel tags do not rust. Engraved text is very clear, legible, and looks good on steel tags. Stamped stainless steel tags may not be as good and readable as engraved ones. But brass tags are not as durable as stainless steel because brass is a soft metal. Even lacquer-coated brass tags do not last long. Vending machines can produce aluminum tags but these machines cannot engrave on stainless steel. Tags of aluminum, which is very soft metal, are inexpensive.
Pet tags are very affordable. Blank tags cost as little as quarter, while a complete pet tag can cost as little as $3.00. In some parts of the world, permanent pet tags are issued at-cost or even free.
Pet tags for dogs are the most popular form of pet tags. Dog pet tags display address and telephone number of the owner. In the case of a lost dog, this means that it easily can be sent back to respective owners. Metal tags worn around a dogÂ’s neck in its collar are a good means of identification. Data on pet dog tags may consist of allergy details, artwork, medication, logo, picture, and text. They can be personalized. Tags can be produced in matching colors and desired sizes. Double sided engraving tags may cost as little as $5.00. Many tags have separate lines for name, address, city, pin and so on.
Readily available and easily affordable, pet tags are vital for ensuring that if your pet gets lost, it will have a good chance of being found and returned to you.
