Dog Training Housebreaking

1.  Never confine your puppy to the crate unless you are at home and can observe them. The only exception to this is at night when you are going to sleep.  In the day, after an hour in the crate, give your puppy the chance to eliminate outside.  Put your puppy on a leash, take them to their designated elimination spot, and give them puppy 3 - 5 minutes to produce.

2.  If your puppy does not eliminate during the time you've given them, then just return them to their crate.  However, if they do eliminate then immediately give them praise, or reward them with treats and/or playtime.  Let your puppy run freely in the house.  Once you know they have just eliminated, you can be almost certain there won't be an accidents.  After a bit of free time, have your puppy return to their crate, and be ready to take them back outside in another 45 - 60 minutes from their last bathroom break.

3.  An easy way to keep track of the bathroom breaks is to keep a journal of your puppy's routine.  So long as you feed your puppy at a scheduled time each day, their need to eliminate should correspond with that time.  After you know what time of day your puppy needs to eliminate, begin taking them outside only at those times instead of once an hour.

4.  Once you get to this point, and your puppy is able to roam freely in the house, you should put them in the crate about an hour before their scheduled elimination time.  Doing this prevents your puppy from eliminating earlier than expected.  Being consistent with your training and giving them ample praise and rewards for eliminating outside, will make your puppy be more reliable at holding it until you take them out.  When your puppy is successful with this, begin reducing the amount of time your puppy is confined before their bathroom break.  In the end you will not need to confine your puppy in order for them to hold it until you take them outside.

5.  It is vital to create a routine, so your puppy learns to eliminate in the correct place while you are present.  Being present when your puppy eliminates gives you the chance to praise them, and will decrease the chances accidents in the house.

6.  When you are not at home make sure you don't let your puppy have free reign of the house.  Instead confine them to a small area such as the kitchen, or a bathroom where the floors are stain and water-resistant.  And remember that confinement to this area is not the same as crate training.

7.  It is likely that your puppy will have accidents during house breaking, and you must remember not to punish them for it.  The best way to train a puppy or dog is to reward the good behavior, instead of punishing the bad.  If your puppy has accidents, then go back to the steps where you are supervising them when they have free reign of the house, and using the crate to encourage them to hold it.

Rural show is top family event
CLIFTON Show Society president Kate Flynn is gearing up for a top time at the 99th annual event this weekend.

All dogs can be potentially dangerous, however some dogs are more dangerous than others. Various types of breeds can be considerably stronger and larger than a person of average size. This is why most apartment properties with many families living close together use a list of restricted breeds to approve new tenants and their animals. From my experience, the following breeds are almost always on restricted breed lists of most apartment communities.

1. Pit Bulls

Weight: 55-65 lbs.

Origin: United States

A pit bull is a fearless dog that will take on any opponent. They will lock their jaws onto the prey until it's dead. Pit bulls have a reputation of mauling people to death and they are highly sought for dog fighting.

2. Rottweilers

Weight: 100-130 lbs.

Origin: Germany

Rottweilers are known to be very aggressive dogs because of their keen territorial instincts. That's why they make great guard dogs.

3. German Shepherds

Weight: 70-100 lbs.

Origin: Germany

These dogs are intelligent and very alert. They are highly used by local authorities such as the police K-9 unit. German shepherds are known to be fearless and confident dogs.

4. Huskies

Weight: 44-66 lbs.

Origin: Alaska

Very energetic and intelligent dogs. Not considered a good guard dog because of its personality characteristics and gentle temperament. A 2000 study of dog bites resulting in human fatalities in the U.S. found fifteen such fatalities (6% of the total) were caused by "husky-type" dogs between 1979 and 1997.

5. Alaskan Malamutes

Weight: 75-100 lbs.

Origin: Nordic

These dogs are very energetic and active. If they are bored, they can become destructive. That's why this dog needs lots of exercise to be happy.

6. Doberman Pinschers

Weight: 65-90 lbs.

Origin: Germany

Dobermans are great guard dogs for their alertness, intelligence and loyalty. They can be aggressive dogs when provoked. The typical pet Doberman attacks only if it believes that it, its property, or its family are in danger.

7. Chow Chow

Weight: 50-70 lbs.

Origin: China

These dogs can be aggressive if poorly bred. The Chow Chow may appear to be independent and aloof for much of the day but needs constant reinforcement.

8. Presa Canario

Weight: 80-115 lbs.

Origin: Canary Islands

Originally bred to guard and fight with cattle, an attack by this dog has been described as hopeless for the victim. They are a guardian breed with man-stopping ability, incredible power and a complete lack of fear.

9. Boxer

Weight: 50-70 lbs.

Origin: Germany

Unlike their name suggest, these dogs are not typically aggressive by nature. They are bright, energetic and playful breed. Boxers have been known to be "headstrong", which makes it a bit difficult to train them but with positive reinforcement techniques, Boxers often respond much better.

10. Dalmatian

Weight: 40-70 lbs.

Origin: Yugoslavia

Dalmatians are very protective dogs and can be aggressive towards humans. They are very active and need lots of exercise. They have very sensitive natures and an excellent memory. This bred is famed for their intelligence, independence, and survival instincts.

Dogs most often make wonderful pets, however in certain circumstances, any type of dog can be dangerous. Even friendly dogs, may cause harm in the wrong circumstance.

Not all apartment properties have breed restriction lists but this is not something that is commonly known. Your best bet is to contact an apartment locating company in your area to obtain a list these properties and their current availability.

3 new breeds to show at Westminster

With so many different dog breeds available, how can you know which dog is right the right pet for you and your family? There are so many things to take into consideration when selecting a puppy including size, behavior, health concerns, compatibility with other pets and children, temperament and grooming requirements. Here we have outlined a few common dog breeds to help you find the dog that is best for you and your family's specific needs and lifestyle.

German Wirehaired Pointer

The German Wirehaired Pointer is known by a lot of different names including Deutscher Drahthaariger, Vorstehund, German Pointer, and Drahthaar. This German breed was first developed at the end of the 19th century as a hunting dog. This breed was created by crossing several dog breeds including Terriers, German Shorthaired Pointers, Foxhounds and Poodles. Today this breed is used as both a sporting dog and as a family dog.

Pekingese

The Pekingese, also called the Lion Dog and the Peking Palasthund, is a Chinese toy breed. Their ancestry can be traced back 1500 years. They were originally developed as a palace dog. Today this breed is very popular as a show dog, as a companion dog, and as a family dog.

The Pekingese is a tiny little dog that stands between 6 and 9 inches tall and weighs between 7 and 12 pounds. They have a long double coat that comes in a variety of colors and patters. They are a great companion dog, however, they donÂ’t get along well with little children. They can be a bit grouchy if you try to wake them up when they are sleeping so they are best suited for quieter homes.

The German Wire Haired Pointer stands between 22 and 26 inches tall and usually weighs between 45 and 75 pounds. Their coat is short, thick, and harsh. It comes in solid colors as well as multi-colors. The most common coat colors associated with this breed include liver, black, and white.

Standard Schnauzer

The Standard Schnauzer, also called the Mittelschnauzer, is a German non-sporting breed. They stand between 17.5 and 19.5 inches tall and they weigh between 26 and 40 pounds. They have the typical Schnauzer coat that is short, harsh, and wiry. They come in salt and pepper, solid black, and black and silver color variations. This is a very affectionate and tolerant dog that makes a great companion for kids and adults.

Ibizan Hound

The Ibizan Hound, also referred to as the Podenco Ibicenco, the Ca Eibisenc, and the Balaeric Dog, is a Spanish breed. Its origins can be traced back to Egypt around 3400 B.C. when this dogÂ’s ancestors were used as hunting dogs. Today they are used for both hunting and companionship.

The Ibizan Hound is a tall slender dog that stands between 22.5 and 27.5 inches tall and weighs between 42 and 55 pounds. They have a short, smooth or rough, dense coat that comes in white, lion, chestnut brown, or multi-color. This dog has a great temperament for family life, and they can be trained to get along with small pets. Some of the health issues that plague this breed include pesticide sensitivities and reproductive issues.

Scottish Terrier

The Scottish Terrier, also called a Scotty Dog or an Aberdeen Terrier, is a terrier that originated in Scotland. They were originally bred as vermin hunters. They are a short stature dog that only stands between 10 and 11 inches tall and weighs between 19 and 23 pounds. They have a medium length wiry coat that comes in black, brindle, and wheaten.

Dog Training Secrets

Schutzhund dog training is not for everyone, but it certainly has its benefits. Schutzhund dog training started in Germany in the 1900s as a test for the working dog qualities of the German Shepherd dog breed. Training your dog using the Schutzhund method gives the dog the ability to protect its master, but show enough restraint to still obey its master despite highly stressful circumstances. For example, the dog should not be afraid to bite the arm of an assailant, but still have the presence of mind to let go if the master bids the dog to do so. Today, this type of dog training is a popular sport that tests the dog characters in three stages: obedience, tracking, and protection.

Obedience

This Schutzhund dog training stage is conducted in a large field and involves two dogs. One dog is left on a corner of the field while the handler works on the other dog. Then, after the first dog completes the course, the dogs switch places. The dog is taken through a series of exercises, such as heeling among a group of people, recalls, and retrieves. There is also a time in Shutzhund dog training that gunshots are fired and the dog is expected to remain in heeling position. This tests the dog's reactions to stressful situations. If the dog is too aggressive or shows fear, the dog doesn't pass this part of training.

Tracking

In this part of the training, the dog is asked to track a series of articles that are previously laid in a field. The dog then finds the articles and shows that he or she has found the article. Usually, the dog indicates this by lying down with the article between his or her front paws.

Protection

Training your dog using the Schutzhund method is not complete without the third stage, which is protection. The dog is tested on how he or she can protect his or her master and still have the presence of mind to obey its master through this. A decoy, who wears a heavily padded sleeve, then pretends to attack the master. The dog is expected to stop the attack by biting the padded sleeve. As part of the schutzhund dog training, the dog must also let go of the padded sleeve when given a command. Failure to do so will result to the dog not passing the test. As part of the schutzhund dog training protection phase, the dog is also asked to find a hiding decoy and to bark and keep the decoy until the handler dismisses him or her.

Competitions that feature the best of Schutzhund dog training abounds. There are several training levels in which your dog can compete.
