One of the worst experiences you can go through in your life is when you have just lost a beloved pet. This invokes in many cases the same feelings as losing a dear family member or a friend. Losing a pet is not a pleasant experience and it can hurt very badly, without having much left for consolation. However there are a few things that you can do to minimize your pain as much as possible without compromising your sentiments of love for your departed pet.

When you have just lost a dear pet, you are trying to find something to ease your suffering, to ease your pain. The more recent the loss was, the stronger the grief. This is when performing a small pet funeral service might help. This can act as a catharsis, as a relief. He can have either embalming or cremation, or anything else that is available at the time. Being there for the funeral will only strengthen your bond with him, making him a stronger part of your life.

You can have some tangible memories of him, such as leashes, your pet's tag, collars, anything that will remind you of him and will ease your pain until you are ready to let go.

Some people say that the best way to make your pain less after a pet died is to replace him right away. Try to avoid that, at least avoid replacing him immediately. Give yourself some time to grieve. Even if the new puppy looks a lot like your old dog, they are not the same and while you are expecting the new dog to behave just like the old one, you will be strongly disappointed when he will not do it. Each dog is unique and has unique behaviors and tendencies.

Another thing that people tend to do is to bury their pain and act as if nothing has happened. You need to acknowledge that it hurts and that you have just suffered a loss. Also if anyone tells you that "it's only an animal, get over it", don't listen to them. Most probably they haven't had a pet before so the feeling is completely unknown to them. Only somebody who actually had a friend who died can truly understand you and your grief.

You will heal from the pain, but it takes time. This is why you need to be gentle and kind to yourself during this time. Time does heal all wounds and it will heal yours. Also don't feel guilty when you finally start to have days when you are not surrounded by your pain. Healing is natural and you need to go on. Remembering your pet and wallowing in your pain for life are completely different things. As time passes, your pain will lessen and you will find yourself often smiling when remembering various funny moments that you and your friend shared. These are your most precious, most treasured moments. Live them and enjoy them.

When your children persuade you to get a dog, then your responsibilities multiply, you have a responsibility to give your dog the best possible home, especially if he has been mistreated and is a dog you have got from a pound.

So, what do you need to give your dog a happy life?

• Food - you must give your dog the best food you can get for him. Dogs need at least 50% of their diet to be protein, so look for a food that contains a high percentage of protein.

If you cannot find a food for him with a high enough protein percentage, consider adding some meat, fish or eggs to his diet.

• All living things need water. Your dog should have access to fresh water every day, and at all times.

• A place to sleep - it is good if your dog has his own bed, or blanket; a place to call his own. Do not allow him to be disturbed by children when he is in his bed. It can be a great idea for him to have his own crate - again, no children should be allowed to go in it or disturb him while he is there.

• Exercise - All dogs need a walk every day, preferably two. One should be off-lead, so he gets a chance to forage and sniff around. If your dog is one of the breeds that will catch a scent and disappear after a rabbit then you need to find a dog-proof area for him.

If you provide all these for your dog, along with proper vet care, not only will they live a long and happy life, they will provide you with protection and companionship. They will be much more trainable because they will be happy and confident dogs.
