All dogs bark at one time or another. I've had a dozen or so dogs during my lifetime and I have heard all of them bark at various times. But for the last fifteen years I've owned small, toy breeds such as Maltese, Yorkshire Terriers, Chihuahuas, and Dachshunds and the barking is unbelievable! I decided to investigate why this occurs.

Dogs bark when they have something to tell us or when something is different in their surroundings and they need to evaluate the situation. Just like infants and toddlers, making noise gets attention from the creatures around you who are able to help. I currently have a male Maltese and a female Yorkshire Terrier at my house. I have taken a survey over the past two weeks and found that they are most likely to bark when:

• they run out of drinking water and need for me to refill it
• they are missing a favorite toy and want me to locate it
• they hear an unusual sound and want me to know about it
• they hear a vehicle that they are not familiar with, or that makes a loud annoying sound, such as the garbage truck or a furniture delivery truck
• they hear an unfamiliar voice
• someone they do not know comes too close to them
• someone they do know tries to leave them

All of these examples are instances where they are uncomfortable with what is happening in their territory. They do not bark when the phone rings, the television or radio is playing, people they know come and go from the house, or when the dishwasher is on. They have become accustomed to these sounds and have no reason to be alarmed. My recommendation to teach you small, toy breed dogs to keep from barking so much is twofold. First, get them used to as many sounds as possible that are likely to be heard in your home on a regular basis, and second, do not subject your dog to sounds or events that you already know will be upsetting or unsettling to them.

Dogs truly are man's best friend. If we treat them with respect and dignity they will give us years of faithful companionship.

The Yorkshire Terrier, which is commonly known as Yorkie, is a member of the adorable toy group of dogs. It is a combination of England's best terrier breeds-English black and tan terrier, Paisley terrier and the Clydesdale terrier. And compared to other terriers, they have a distinct tan and blue colored hair.

This dog breed originated in Yorkshire, England sometime in the 1800s and made its way to America only during the late 1800s since there were so many variety and sizes to this breed. Yorkies did not make an exclusive name however, until the early 1900s. It was also during this period when dog enthusiasts preferred Yorkshire Terriers than other breeds due to their small size.

Despite their size, the character of dogs belonging to this breed tends to be bold, courageous and confident. They almost seem oblivious to their size and height. They are however at all times eager for adventure and fun. When it comes to relating with other dogs, Yorkies can be a bit aggressive; hostile and can bark at other dogs especially smaller ones. Yorkies definitely maintains the old rough-edged temperament that terriers are known for.

Upkeep and Maintenance

Similar to other toy breeds, the Yorkie requires plenty of exercise. Since this breed is rather small in size, it can get its required exercise from running around the house from room to room. This however, should not be used as a reason for owners not to walk their Yorkies outside. Dogs belonging to this breed would in fact love brisk walks outside with their owners. You should however, do well to keep Yorkies on a leash to avoid problems with smaller dogs or other animals

When it comes to living arrangements, Yorkies are not suitable for outdoor living. They would prefer companionship with its breed or family and or with their owners. If you would need to leave your dog outdoors, you should ensure that there is plenty of shelter and bedding space/equipment.

Yorkshire Terrier dogs are likely to grow very lengthy hair. If you decide to keep your dogs hair in its natural length, it would need the necessary grooming. Most pet owners however, prefer to have their Yorkie's hair regularly trimmed so they don't need too much brushing: just three to four times in a week. Long haired Yorkies need more brushing than this since long hair will tend to tangle or mat.

Health Care Information for Yorkies

The Yorkie has generally no major health concerns however; owners should look out for patellar luxation. This condition is characterized by kneecap dislocation and is common in miniature and toy breeds; sometimes congenital in nature. Veterinarians may also suggest that Yorkie owners have their dogs under go specific testing like eye exams, liver ultrasound and knee dyplasia exams.

A healthy Yorkshire Terrier can live up to 16 years; or live the average lifespan which is from 10-15 years. Generally, smaller dog breeds have longer lifespan than larger dogs since they have lesser risk of cardiovascular and skeletal diseases.

Many may now be considering the Tibetan Terrier as a family pet, since the Tibetan Terrier 'Willy' (full name Fabulous Willy) won the trophy for Best in Show at Crufts Dog Show 2007. If you are, you will be pleased to hear that the temperament of this breed has been one of the most attractive aspects of the breed since it was first established in the 1920's. As would be expected from a dog previously used as a watch dog, they tend to be reserved around strangers, but should never be aggressive or shy with them.

One of the features for which the Tibetan Terrier is known is their broad, flat feet. We don't think that such feet can be found in any other dog breed. The eyes are large, and dark. The Tibetan Terrier is one of the most ancient of all dog breeds, as has been established by recent DNA analysis. The feet have developed for mobility in snow. It has been said that the Tibetan terrier, is more of a herding dog, than a terrier.

It makes an excellent guard and has a powerful, siren-like bark which is surprising in a dog this size. It is also a loyal and affectionate pet, though it has a mind of its own and needs firm training. Although its coat requires regular grooming, it does not need a great deal of exercise. This is a playful breed and will enjoy human company in the garden or on the occasional foray into the countryside.

The eyes are large, dark, and set fairly far apart. Long and thick, but should not be so long as to touch the floor, as is typical in breeds such as the Lhasa Apso, or the Maltese.

The appearance of the Tibetan Terrier is that of a powerful, medium sized dog of square proportions, with a shaggy coat. A fall of hair covers the face and eyes, but long eyelashes generally prevent hair from getting in the Tibetan Terrier's eyes, and the breed has very good eyesight. As such, the early history of the breed is linked to only a handful of foundation dogs.

No particular colours are preferred, as with terriers generally a wide range of colours are permissible, however, liver and chocolate are not allowed. Although waves are acceptable the coat should not be silky or curled.

Breed health problems have been seen and because of that, Tibetan Terrier clubs recommend purchasing from breeders who participate in eye and hip testing.

The Tibetan or Lhasa Terrier, being such an ancient breed, is probably the ancestor of the Lhasa Apso and Shih Tzu. The most plausible version of its history is that it was bred as a herder, working in tandem with the much larger Tibetan Mastiff which guarded the herds. Less hardy individuals were given to the Tibetan monks, who in turn may have given them to nomadic tribes to protect them on their travels; it is also possible that the nomads stole the dogs. Another account claims that the Tibetan Terrier originally came from Japan and was brought to Tibet by nomadic traders.

Like the other Tibetan dogs now popular in the West, the Tibetan Terrier has a long and luxurious coat. Typically it has a fringe falling forward over the eyes, a small beard and a jaunty kink to its tail.

Pugs are small, adorable dogs, popularly kept as house pets all over the world. At first sight, a Pug might resemble a small bulldog or a miniature mastiff. However, this breed is totally unique, with its heavily wrinkled, flat, round face.

Pugs originated in China in about 700 BC and as trade routes grew, the breed spread across to Europe and America. The dog is characterized by a big, round head, short, stocky body and a tail that is curled tightly over the hip. The Pug is a very sociable dog, but can be stubborn at times. They tend to shed a lot more than other dogs in the same category and also have a tendency to snore. They are also susceptible to several diseases, including an inflammation of the brain, a disease unfortunately specific to the breed.

Despite their loving disposition and cute appearance, Pugs are abandoned across the US every day. The reasons for these are many. In some cases, the owner might find the dog a burden as it might require more attention and time than the person is willing to give. Some Pugs are abandoned because they develop some disease or illness at an early stage. It is a sad sight to see these poor helpless animals suffer. However, all hope is not lost as several non-profit organizations look after such homeless dogs.

Pug rescue takes place on a large scale in all US states, with each having several organizations dedicated to this cause. These organizations locate homeless and neglected Pugs and Pug crossbreeds. They work towards finding them better homes where they will be well cared and protected. These Pug rescue organizations take care of vaccinations and also treat the animal for any diseases and ailments. The organizations also provide foster homes for the animals until they find a loving family.

Several Pug rescue missions run adoption centers. All applications that come in for Pug adoption are carefully screened before giving away the dog. These organizations, along with their caring volunteers, help give these innocent creatures a new life.
