However, there are some recommended guidelines that will help you decide which dog fence wire will be better for you. First 18 Gage is stronger and more durable and long lasting than 20 Gage Boundary wire. Solid core copper wire is better than stranded wire.

Here are some guidelines to follow:

Use 18 Gage if you have

• Rocky soil or rocks
• If you are not burying the wire
• Many trees or vegetation
• Larger than 5 acres

Use 20 Gage if you have:

• Loose sandy or clay soil
• Putting wire next to a fence
• Few trees or vegetation
• 5 acres or smaller area

PLEASE NOTE - If installing an electronic dog fence above ground, you will need to use lawn staples every 5 feet to keep the wire in place. If the wire moves around then the dog will become confused about where his boundaries are. These are sold in packages of about 100 staples. One package will take care of one 500 foot spool of wire. Where you cut grass, it is best to bury the wire.

A few important tips to keep in mind when purchasing a fence system:

-Installing the wire underground the best tool to use is an edger, a gas powered edger or an edger that also lays cable at the same time, it could be called a cable layer or edger-trencher. The wire only needs to be buried 2 -3 in but can go deeper if you want.

-Never mix 2 types of wire! Mixed wire can give you signal problems and affect the functioning of your system. If you use 20 Gage stranded to start, then stick with 20 Gage stranded. Don't go from stranded to solid core. The same goes for all the different types and sizes of wire. If more than 500 foot is being purchased for larger areas, make sure that extra wire is the same type of wire.

- If you are using the pre-twisted wire you must use 20 Gage twisted wire with 20 Gage solid core wire and if you are using 18 Gage wire for your fence you must use 18 Gage twisted wire. Pre-twisted wire is use to create a gateway or place where the dog can cross the dog fence wire and not get a stimulation or shock from his collar.

-NEVER attach or weave dog your fencing wire through a CHAIN LINK FENCE or metal fence; it will negatively affect the functioning of the fence systems.

-If you have an existing fence that your dog jumps, climbs over or digs under, it would be best to put the electric fence wire at least one foot inside the existing fence, not attach it to the existing fence. That way the dog will be able to get the collar, he is wearing, to cross the wire in order to get a shock . If the dog fence wire is too close to the existing wooden or chain link fence then the dog will not get a shock and not be deterred.

-If you are running the dog fence wire going through a forest or heavily treed area, where you cannot bury the wire, just leave it on the surface. Use staples or trees to keep the wire in place and the ground will grow up over it. It is important to bury the wire where you will be cutting grass over the wire.

-The wire is waterproof with a Polyurethane coating and can also go through wet or swampy areas and still work just fine.

-IMPORTANT, if your are ordering extra rolls of wire, you should always order an extra set of 50 boundary flags with every extra roll of 500 foot of wire that you purchase. It is important for your pet to know the boundary. If you order 1500 foot of wire for example, you should get 150 boundary flags.

Your dog will be wearing their dog collar for a long time. This is because they hold important information such as ID tags. This means that if your dog happens to get lost, when it is found you can be located as the owner and get your dog back. So you do not want the dog collar to be too tight on your dog since it will be wearing it a lot, as this would be uncomfortable for your dog. On the other hand, a dog collar is very important for when you are walking your dog, as you attach your leash to it, so you do not want your dogs collar to be too big, as if it spots a cat it will likely run off after it. You do not want it to slip off!

First of all, it is important to note that there are no one-size-fits-all collars. There are many collars to pick from. There are three things to consider when picking the right size collar for your dog. First of all, you need to consider the width of the collar. You will also need to consider the length. Finally, you will need to consider how tight the collar feels on your dog before making your decision. Below are some tips for each one, to help you make a good decision;

Width

Width is another way of saying how thick a collar is. When deciding how thick a collar should be, you should go with common sense. Consider the size of your dog. You should never get a poodle and one-inch wide collar. Not only would this look ridiculous, but your dog would struggle to hold the weight of it on its neck. Conversely, you will want to give a big dog a thick collar so it is not too flimsy.

Length

This is a very important step. Before you buy a dog collar, make sure you measure your dogs neck. Take this measurement and then add two or three inches on to the measurement. The length you are left with should be the correct target length of whatever collar you buy. Do not worry about not being able to find a collar to fit the length of your dogs neck. There are lots of different sizes of collars out there.

Tightness

When you put your collar on your dog, you should be able to slip two fingers in between the collar and your dogs neck. If you are unable to do this, then you know that the collar is too tight on your dogs neck and should be loosened so it does not restrict your dogs breathing. If you can slip more than two fingers in, then you know that it is too loose.

Most people have heard of gun shy dogs. It's really a misnomer, because they aren't afraid of guns as such. They're afraid of any loud noises that resemble a gun being shot. This includes vehicles backfiring, fireworks, thunderstorms and, of course, gunfire.

Many gun shy dogs have been seriously injured and even killed when fireworks displays have scared them. Their first instinct is to run and, unfortunately, that often means running into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

Dog owners with gun shy dogs have to be watchful, especially in summer, when there often are loud noises that come out of the blue. Apart from running into harms way, gun shy dogs can be extremely destructive.

They climb on and destroy furniture, they scratch in corners, at walls and doors. They dig under fences in a desperate attempt to escape. Some dogs have severely injured themselves jumping through glass windows in fear.

Dog owners who inadvertently leave a door or gate open will soon discover that their beloved dogs have disappeared. If you're lucky, your dog will return when the fear and the perceived danger has stopped.

Here are six safety tips you can use to protect your gun shy dog.

Dog Safety Tip #1. Travel safety

If your gun shy dog travels with you, be aware of areas where there might be loud noises, such as while driving past road construction. The workers often use dynamite and heavy machinery that can scare your dog. Keep your car windows rolled up.

Dog Safety Tip #2. Keep an ID on your dog

A gun shy dog should always wear a secure collar with an ID tag attached that contains the dog's name and dog owner's phone number, and a current rabies tag.

Be sure to include any special information that finders might need to know. For instance, if he requires medication (ie: diabetes, thyroid, epilepsy), just in case you don't get him back before his next dose. If he does go into a health situation, the finder won't have to worry that he might have rabies or other dangerous disease. Besides, the person will know to get treatment for your dog.

Dog Safety Tip #3. Find a safe place for your gun shy dog

Dogs will seek shelter where they can hide, often somewhere tight and dark such as under a table or in a cave. You can ease his distress by making a spot for him in a closet or under the bed where he can head when he becomes afraid. Get him used to that area prior to such an emergency. Put a familiar blanket on the floor and include a favorite toy to help distract him from the noise. A radio will help.

Dog Safety Tip #4. Seek medical advice

Some gun shy dogs are absolutely terrified and anxious during fireworks displays and thunder storms. Ask your vet if he can prescribe a sedative you can keep on hand for such events.

Dog Safety Tip #5.

Get training for your gun shy dog. Dog trainers can advise you on how to desensitize your pet to those alarming loud noises. It will take some time, but it can be done.

Dog Safety Tip #6: Watch your own reaction

The first instinct of many dog owners is to hold their trembling dog and talk sweetly to try to calm him. This is one of the worst things you can do because it confirms his beliefs that something is wrong.

The best approach is to talk normally to your dog, reassure him by telling him "it's okay, relax", and pet him normally. Don't make a big fuss. Laughing is a good response because it's the opposite of what he's experiencing and sends the message that there really is nothing to fear.

Distraction is extremely effective. Call his name when he's listening intently to the noise. Offer his squeaky toy. Play with him while constantly talking to keep his ears busy.

With these six dog safety tips, dog owners can alleviate their pet's fears and keep them safe from harm.

Preparation is important. Have a leash handy for when things get too noisy. Have sedatives on hand. Make sure all the doors, windows and gates are secured. Close your car windows. Get your dog used to a safe hideout in your home where he can feel protected.

Dog Training Housebreaking

1.  Never confine your puppy to the crate unless you are at home and can observe them. The only exception to this is at night when you are going to sleep.  In the day, after an hour in the crate, give your puppy the chance to eliminate outside.  Put your puppy on a leash, take them to their designated elimination spot, and give them puppy 3 - 5 minutes to produce.

2.  If your puppy does not eliminate during the time you've given them, then just return them to their crate.  However, if they do eliminate then immediately give them praise, or reward them with treats and/or playtime.  Let your puppy run freely in the house.  Once you know they have just eliminated, you can be almost certain there won't be an accidents.  After a bit of free time, have your puppy return to their crate, and be ready to take them back outside in another 45 - 60 minutes from their last bathroom break.

3.  An easy way to keep track of the bathroom breaks is to keep a journal of your puppy's routine.  So long as you feed your puppy at a scheduled time each day, their need to eliminate should correspond with that time.  After you know what time of day your puppy needs to eliminate, begin taking them outside only at those times instead of once an hour.

4.  Once you get to this point, and your puppy is able to roam freely in the house, you should put them in the crate about an hour before their scheduled elimination time.  Doing this prevents your puppy from eliminating earlier than expected.  Being consistent with your training and giving them ample praise and rewards for eliminating outside, will make your puppy be more reliable at holding it until you take them out.  When your puppy is successful with this, begin reducing the amount of time your puppy is confined before their bathroom break.  In the end you will not need to confine your puppy in order for them to hold it until you take them outside.

5.  It is vital to create a routine, so your puppy learns to eliminate in the correct place while you are present.  Being present when your puppy eliminates gives you the chance to praise them, and will decrease the chances accidents in the house.

6.  When you are not at home make sure you don't let your puppy have free reign of the house.  Instead confine them to a small area such as the kitchen, or a bathroom where the floors are stain and water-resistant.  And remember that confinement to this area is not the same as crate training.

7.  It is likely that your puppy will have accidents during house breaking, and you must remember not to punish them for it.  The best way to train a puppy or dog is to reward the good behavior, instead of punishing the bad.  If your puppy has accidents, then go back to the steps where you are supervising them when they have free reign of the house, and using the crate to encourage them to hold it.

German Shepherds make excellent guard dogs for a number of reasons. They are strong, clever and highly obedient which makes training German Shepherds a pleasant task. Crate Training For Dogs

Come to think of it, training a God is not just converting your dog to simple following your instructions and commands. There are numerous ways and means to train a dog, but one of the most effective dog training aids is an electronic clicker The essence of clicker training is that the dog is guided, not forced, into the desired behavior.

The clicker works on the principles of conditioning behavior and association of actions with sounds as experimented by Ivan Pavlov (a Russian Behavioral expert) long ago. He researched and established a relation between sounds and sight. He determined that even in the absence of the actual situation we can condition an intelligent animal such as a dog to react for a situation on hearing a sound even in the absence of the actual situation and associating sounds with events and required actions.

Pavlov had trained conditioned his dog for associating the sound of a bell with food and the dogs even started producing additional saliva when the bell rang and food was not provided as they had over a period of time associated the sound with food.

In the similar way you can train your dogs to act and behave in a required manner to the sound of a clicker. It takes a lot of patience, but is entirely non-confrontational. If you learn and understand clicker training you will not only be more effective in training dogs, but you will probably also improve your people handling skills.

Clicker in my opinion is one of the greatest dog training aids developed till now and suitable for dogs of all sizes and breeds.

German Shepherd Dog Training

The German Shepherd is considered as one of the most elegant and noble breed of dogs. With its high pointing ears and shiny coats, the strong and agile appearance of these dogs are only preceded by their intelligence. These dogs learn quickly and will never forget what was taught to them. Because they are hardworking and active, German Shepherds are also praised for their capability to do work. But just where did this breed come from? And how did this breed attain the reputation that it has now?

History

During the mid-1800s, a group of dog breeders called the Phylax Society was formed in order to foster a local breed of dogs for the German nation. This group conducted discussions and experiments by mixing different breeds, hoping to arrive with an offspring that had the advantages of its parents. Unfortunately, the group did not last long and in 1894, the group disbanded. Though the Phylax Society was not successful for the creation of the current German Shepherds, the studies it conducted was able to give way for its creation.

By the end of the 19th century, a German captain named Max von Stephanitz, who is considered as the father of the breed, formed another group that aimed for the creation of the best breed of sheepdogs, from which arrived the modern-day German shepherds.

Though there were high risks in having defective offsprings, inbreeding was necessary to permanently fix the qualities during the early years of the German Shepherds. In order to keep the breed alive, Von Stephanitz had to find other uses for the breed aside from regular sheep herding. He soon realized that the abilities of the breed can be very helpful for government activities. During the two world wars, the German Shepherd has gained much praise from their owners for being a very brave and reliable companion in the field. It is for these reasons that the breed has become one of the most popular breeds in the world.

Name change

After the second world war, the name of the breed was changed for certain reasons. From the German Shepherd it became the Alsatian wolf dog which was named after the German-French border Alsace-Lorraine. But in 1977, the original name of the breed was returned and is currently used in most countries.

No doubt, every owner wants that his dog obeys him in better way. Well, I can not say that how good your dog behaves with you but if it isn't than these tips worth a lot for you to train your pup. There are no such hard and fast rules you even can start practicing these tips on your pup and I am sure that you will get 100% results.

Communicate with your dog by Sign Language:

You will not believe it but yes it is true and 100% works that instead of verbal communication, sign language is very helpful to make a dog obedient. Many researches have shown that dogs feel it quite difficult to understand verbal commands of their owners. Only the commands they can understand easily are Sit, Stand, Fetch and Come etc. Except these a dog is unable to understand that owner is commanding him. So I being a good trainer analyzed that instead of verbal communication using sign language is quite effective for dog training.

Simple! you have to start communicating with your dog by different signs. Suppose if you want to call him than instead of calling him just tap your leg or clap to him. At first he might be hesitant to learn this trick but after some practice he will surely understand that what you want from him. Choose specific signs to teach them to your dog and practice them on your puppy on daily basis. I am sure that your pup will learn these tricks very quickly.

Do not shout at your dog:

To stop your dog from barking is quite difficult because it has been seen that most of the owners start yelling at their pups while they are barking. Folks, do not forget that a dog can not understand your language and you are just adding more aggression (by shouting) on his mind while he is barking. Instead of shouting make him realize by signs that it is not the time to bark. Only thing you have to do is to take him in when he is barking outside and take him out if he is showing aggression in the home. Repeat this process and this practice will surely realizes dog that it is not the time to bark.
