Dog Training Course

Dog training courses can mean the difference between having a happy dog and happy life - or not. Dogs are happier, healthier and safer when they have loving boundaries set for them and that's what dog training courses help you learn to set for your dog.

First let's take a look at the overall methods that dog training courses use. If you find a method that suits you best, you will know the type of course that will best for you and your dog.

Types of Dog Training Courses

Reward Training: Emphasizes positive reinforcement -- instead of punishing or yelling at your dog for what you don't want him to do, you reward your dog for doing what you want him to do. Rewards consist of praise and petting as well as treats. Treats are especially used in the early learning stages of a new behavior.

Dog Whispering: Dog Whispering is more of a general philosophy than a method. This is a more advanced method that should taken on by dog lovers who feel very confident in their connection with their dogs and are interested in learning about canine behaviors, motivation and body language.

Choke or Check Collar Training: Choke collars are collars that slip over a dogs head onto it neck and tighten down on the dogs neck when it pulls too hard on its leash. Choke collars were designed for professional trainers and for limited use - there is a health risk to your dog's neck and trachea when using them. In general, dog training courses that emphasize choke or check collar training are not recommended.

Prong Collar Training: Don't even think about this method. A prong collar has metal ends that stick into a dog's flesh and digs into its neck when it pulls on its leash. Inhumane period!

Head Collar Training: Very humane collar that gently redirects a dog's attention or the way you want him to go instead of punishing or hurting him as the two methods directly above do. Very effective especially when used with Reward Training.

Clicker Training: This method takes a hand-held clicker which, oddly enough, makes a "clicking" noise when squeezed. During clicker training, a dog is reinforced in behaviors with doggie treats paired with the clicking noise. At some point, the treats will be eliminated and the dog will know it has done something right simply by hearing the clicking noise. Very effective.

Electric Collar Training: As the name implies, this type of training involves your dog wearing a collar in which you are able to administer an electric shock to discourage certain behaviors. this method should only be used by professional trainers in the most extreme circumstances.

Ultrasonic Whistle Training: You know of the dog whistles that you can't hear but a dog can - right? This method uses these whistles to get your dog's attention as well as to train him. You will need to be trained in this method first.

Dog Agility Training

Using a leave command will give you much greater control over what your dog eats and sniffs when you are out walking the streets. You can also use it at home or any situation. The leave command is essentially a word that tells your dog not to sniff or eat something and it is the first step in training food refusal. There is not usually a hand signal involved in this type of training because it is more than likely used when you are walking and as your dog may be on the leash, you will not have your hands free.

Why should I use a leave command?

A leave command is a very useful tool to have in your dog training toolkit because it is easy to train and can be used in a variety of situations. It is also very important because it can stop your dog from eating something that may make it sick or may cause choking.

How do I start training a leave command?

Choose the word you want to use - some trainers use the word 'leave'. You can do either or both of the following. For the quickest and best results, do both and ask someone to help you when training food refusal. When you are out in the street and your dog goes to sniff or eat something off the ground, say 'leave' and keep walking. Don't give your dog the opportunity to get to it anyway by walking quickly away. Because this is a form of capturing, it will take some time because you are reliant on there being something on the ground. The second method is better because you have full control and can practise it anytime.

Choose a food that your dog likes and leave a very small pile on the ground. Put your dog on the leash and walk by the food. Walk close enough for him to sniff it but not too close so he can reach it. Give the leave command just as your dog goes for the food. In all good training timing is everything. Your dog needs to understand what you want straight away. You need to interrupt his behaviour as soon as it starts.

When you are walking past, give your dog praise. If you want to use treats to reward him, wait until you are five paces away. Your dog needs to learn that he is being rewarded for leaving the food on the ground and walking away so putting a small distance between the treat and the food on the ground will reinforce this.

FOOD REFUSAL

Food refusal can save your dog from eating poisoned food or over eating. Training food refusal may take a long time depending upon your dog's appetite and with some breeds like Labradors it needs constant practise and reminders.

Before you begin food refusal, choose an 'eat' command. Some people use 'eat' and others 'OK'. Whatever word you choose has to be different from any other word you use for your training.

Put your dog on his leash and get him into a sit. Ask someone to walk up to him and offer him some treats. It is important that you keep your dog in a sit and only let him have the treats when you say so. If he learns forward and stands up, re-command him into a sit and ask the person with the food to step away. When he can sit and wait for your command to eat, that's when he has learnt what you want. Now you have to practise and start making his training more intense.

Remember: always give your dog or puppy the opportunity to correct his behaviour and do the right thing. It is up to you to teach him what is acceptable and what is not. Reward acceptable behaviour; discourage unacceptable behaviour by using loud unpleasant noises, withdrawal of attention or treats or leaving your puppy on its own. Never hit or strike your puppy; you will only be teaching him that violence is an acceptable behaviour in your pack and he may use it on other pack members or friends including children.

Crate Training For Dogs

Come to think of it, training a God is not just converting your dog to simple following your instructions and commands. When you start training your dog for obedience and anti aggressive behavior you actually increase your interaction with your pet. In the course of training, your dog learns a few tricks, but at the same time you also get to learn a lot about your four legged companion.

There are numerous ways and means to train a dog, but one of the most effective dog training aids is an electronic clicker The essence of clicker training is that the dog is guided, not forced, into the desired behavior.

The clicker works on the principles of conditioning behavior and association of actions with sounds as experimented by Ivan Pavlov (a Russian Behavioral expert) long ago. He researched and established a relation between sounds and sight. He determined that even in the absence of the actual situation we can condition an intelligent animal such as a dog to react for a situation on hearing a sound even in the absence of the actual situation and associating sounds with events and required actions.

Pavlov had trained conditioned his dog for associating the sound of a bell with food and the dogs even started producing additional saliva when the bell rang and food was not provided as they had over a period of time associated the sound with food.

In the similar way you can train your dogs to act and behave in a required manner to the sound of a clicker. It takes a lot of patience, but is entirely non-confrontational. If you learn and understand clicker training you will not only be more effective in training dogs, but you will probably also improve your people handling skills.

Clicker in my opinion is one of the greatest dog training aids developed till now and suitable for dogs of all sizes and breeds.

I've created a 6 Day Dog Training Aids Program for anyone who would like to get excellent results in 6 days. This program is designed to help you start training your dogs quicker than you ever thought possible. You'll have a dog that knows how to behave in the shortest amount of time possible. You can find this plan at http://www.MyDogTrainingAids.com.

Obedience Training For Dogs

When is the best time to start obedience training puppies? Puppies are ready to learn from about 10 weeks of age. You should start with the very basics, and not expect too much from your little pooch too soon.

Puppies are babies, just like children, so keep this in mind when you start obedience training puppies. It should not be all "business", you should definitely include plenty of playtime or your little pooch will not listen when you try to teach it some commands.

One of the most important thing about obedience training puppies is to make it fun. Do not yell at your pet or be negative. Positive reinforcement and praise are the best ways to teach a pet a new behavior.

Here are the basic things you should be doing with your puppy:

1. Immediately from when you get your little pooch home, you should regularly bathe and brush him. Trim his nails and brush his teeth. Put a collar on him and attach a leash. This will get your pet used to the idea of being handled and also lets him know who is boss.

2. When you feed your puppy, take his food dish away several times. This will teach him to not be aggressive when he is eating his food.

3. Socialization is very important. Take your pet puppy out for a walk where you will encounter other dogs. Allow your pet to explore those dogs and play with them, if possible. Make sure your pet's vaccinations are up to date.

4. When your puppy is about 1 month old, you can start to teach him simple things like "come", "sit", "wait", "don't touch".

5. Teach your little pooch not to bite. If your pet nips or bites you, you should have a toy ready in your other hand to put in their mouth and then praise them.

Obedience training puppies requires a great deal of patience and love. Never get angry with your pet or hit your pet. Make sure that you spend a great deal of time playing with your pet and never leave it alone with small children.

As your puppy grows older, it is ready to learn more complicated commands. Around the five-month mark, you can teach your pet manners with commands such as "off", "stand", "down" and "stand". Never use punishment as a training method. Any good training method uses rewards to motivate your dog to behave.

Advanced Dog Training

There is such a wide range of dog training books, picking the right one for you and your dog can be confusing. Some aspects of these books need to be considered before you make the decision to buy an expensive training book. Keep these things in mind when you go shopping for your training book.

The first question you should ask yourself is exactly what you are hoping to accomplish with the dog training. The greatest dog training books out there are the ones that work on creating a meaningful connection between you and your pet. Your highest ambition should be to create such a connection, and not be simply concentrating on training your dog.

It's really important that you be aware of what "method" that each of the various dog training books use before you decide to purchase it. Some methods work better than others, and some don't work at all. When considering the methods and choosing one, there are several things you should keep in mind. A few things you need to think about when deciding upon which technique you will employ are:

• Has this method been successful for anyone?

• Is this particular method easy to understand or too complicated?

• Do you feel comfortable with these techniques and will you be able to use them?

• How will your own dog react to these techniques?

• What incentives do they require you to offer to your pet?

• Do they continually use treats and praise incentives, or do they include affirmative reinforcement techniques?

• Is there additional training equipment such as clickers or collars that you will need to purchase and how expensive will that equipment be?

The experience level should also be taken into consideration when choosing the right book for dog training. For a puppies and untrained dogs, look specifically for books that are written for these beginners. But you can also find advanced books for dogs that already have basic training. Remember, we're not talking about just your dog's level of experience you will be taking into consideration, but your own level, too. For those who are somewhat new at training dogs, some of the more complicated methods and advanced techniques for learning tricks might end up confusing both of you.

Be sure to take your dog's breed into consideration when you are choosing a dog training book. Purebred dogs will sometimes have certain quirks that are specific to each of the breeds. These quirks are acknowledged and discussed in a lot of the more breed specific books. However, you'll notice that purebreds are not the only dogs that have specialized books about them. There are dog training books geared to specific mixed breed dogs as well. It's important to know that mixed breeds, or those with questionable parentage, are not shut out of the loop.

When you're considering purchasing any book, checking out customer reviews is always a good idea. Customers who have already purchased and tried the methods offered in the book are a good source of information. They can give you invaluable information on what works or not, and how worthwhile the advice on dog training really was. These comments are completely based upon the user's personal experience, so you can figure out which techniques are better than others simply by reading quite a few reviews.

The last suggestion is to talk to people you know. Go talk to people who already have dogs, and see what they would recommend as good dog training books for you. If nothing else, this information may give you either a starting point for choosing a training book for your dog, or may help you narrow down a list that is too extensive. In addition, you will learn what techniques were effective and which ones were not. Just remember the most important part is that you and your dog find a type of training that fits both of you well.

Potty Training For Dogs

Would you like your dog to be obedient? Many of us struggle with dog training, so a dog doing what it is told is something of a dream. We know our dog's personality is important, but it doesn't make us stop wishing that our dog would do what we tell them to do.

But you can, by using advice to properly implement obedience training for dogs strategies on your own dog.

Obedience training for dogs tips

There are a wide selection of obedience training for dogs tips and hints that you should be following. Below are just a few ideas to help give you an idea of the sort of thing you should be doing to get your dog to finally listen to you.

· Keep obedience lessons brief. No matter how good a dog's stamina they are only capable of taking in new lessons for about 5 - 10 minutes at a time. Go over that and they will retain very little.

· Dogs react best to positive reinforcement and games. Ensure that the lessons are enjoyable - for both of you, and be sure to reward them for doing well.

· Ensure you give rewards right away. Dogs don't manage the concept of time well. If they are being praised for something they think it is for that exact moment - so, for example, if you are training your dog to sit you need to praise them as soon as their rear touches the floor.

· Never use negative reinforcement. If he or she has not learnt a skill before they can't be expected to know it, and if they are not understanding it is better to find another way of teaching them than it is to punish them.

These are of course rather generic tips on obedience training for dogs, but these are accurate. What specific tips you need depends very much on what it is that you are trying to teach your dog.

Training For Dogs

Buying and Introducing a Muzzle

It is vital that your dog perceives the muzzle as a positive experience. Quite often the dog's first encounter with a muzzle is in a stressful and fearful situation, such as the vet clinic, when the dog may become aggressive or difficult to handle because of fear, panic, or injury.

It is therefore prudent to introduce a dog to a muzzle over a period of time, irrespective of whether you ever intend to muzzle. Remember it may be a necessity at sometime during the dog's life, so you should introduce this aid in a non-confrontational positive manner. Depending on what muzzle you are using, there are numerous on the market, ranging from the Baskerville type which is normally a plastic type muzzle, or a canvas type muzzle with or without pinprick holes.

Which One to Choose?

The one I normally prefer is a 'mesh muzzle', which has tiny pinpricks that stop overheating of the skin, and allows treats to be fed directly into the dog's mouth. This type seems to be acceptable to most dogs. click on the image for more information on sizes or to purchase this muzzle.

Depending on which one you choose, you must make the experience rewarding and positive. Most dogs will not be over happy at this type of restriction, so initially either drop a piece of food (cheese is ideal) into the basket muzzle or hold a titbit up to end of the mesh type muzzle and bring it up to the dogs nose. The dog will smell the food and press forward to get at the titbit pushing its face into the muzzle as he does so, carefully slide the muzzle a little way over the nose so he can get the treat then immediately remove it praising at the same time.

Do this a number of times, never attaching the muzzle or forcing the issue. You can use a word like 'good', or even 'muzzle' whilst you are sliding it over the nose. Continue these exercises over a number of days in different places in the house and garden, say 4/5 times a day, if possible.

After 3 or 4 days actually clip the muzzle on for a few seconds, then take it off immediately. Do this on a number of occasions gradually increasing the time the muzzle is left on from seconds to minutes then longer. Make sure it is not too restrictive and tight around the mouth and nose as this can restrict drinking and breathing and could distress the dog.

I do not recommend muzzles for anxiety related problems such as separation anxiety, whereby the dog is destructive, or for barking or howling problems, there are much safer and more appropriate techniques for these types of behaviour. Never leave the muzzle on for long periods and always supervise the dog when he is wearing one.

The use of a muzzle can be advantageous in a number of circumstances:

1. In certain veterinary procedures a muzzle may be required.

2. When introducing another dog or puppy into the household.

3. In cases of pain related temporary aggression.

4. When introducing cats and other animals.

5. Certain breeds are required by law, other breeds may be added to the list in the future.

6. Some behavioural modifications or training procedures may require a muzzle

Whatever the reason the earlier you introduce a Muzzle the easier it will be to accept. I muzzle train all my dogs, after all they may at some time need a muzzle.

For instance when taking blood tests or they are injured and need handling or manipulation or when they are in pain. None of my dogs have ever shown aggression or bitten either a dog or a human. That is not the point, I still feel more comfortable knowing if they need one it will not need to be forced on them when they are injured, hurt or fearful.

Dog Training Leash

There was a time that when dog people spoke of a "training collar," they were referring to a choke chain. Fortunately, in this insane world, sanity has prevailed, and dog trainers and in-the-know dog people no longer use choke chains as training collars. There is a good reason for this return to sanity. Choke chains are dangerous. Choke chains can cause very serious injury and even death to a dog. Don't buy or use a choke chain as a training collar for your dog!

My personal preference for a training collar is just a simple flat buckle collar. When you put the collar on the dog, you should be able to insert two fingers between the collar and the dog's neck. If you make the collar any looser, the dog will be able to slip it over his head; and if you make the collar any tighter, it will be uncomfortable to the dog. It is important to remember that puppies grow. When you put a collar on a puppy, be certain that you check the collar at least once a week to be sure that it hasn't gotten too tight on the dog's neck.

The width of the collar should be determined by the size of the dog. A heavy collar that is wide and thick isn't really appropriate for, say, a toy poodle. On the other hand, a dainty little narrow jewel encrusted collar would look pretty ridiculous on a German shepherd. Remember that you need to affix the dog's vaccination tag and his identification tag to the collar.

The leash that you use for your dog doesn't need to be fancy or expensive. Some owners prefer to use a retractable leash and that's fine. Retractable leashes actually give owners more control of their dogs. You can just "reel" him in, so to speak, if there is another dog or if you see your dog in a dangerous situation. Retractable leashes are more expensive than just regular leashes, of course, and you should only buy the type that have a one-button braking system.

Dog Obediance Training

While there are many dogs up you can take home, most of which can be found in public shelters, it is highly recommended that you choose one that is still young - a puppy. This way, you won't have a hard time getting your dog adjust to his new surroundings, and you can have a lot of time getting to know him, as opposed to old dogs that are too stubborn to adapt to unfamiliar territories and have only a few years left in his life. And of course, it is easier to give dog training obedience to dogs still at puppyhood.

Puppies are arguably some of the cutest creatures in this world. Many people find happiness just by watching puppies active going about their business, chasing insects and other small animals that come their way, barking at cars and anything that moves, or asking for a treat from their owners. But not all puppies have a friendly, peaceable nature. Some are aggressive and need to be strictly trained so they won't become menaces of the community.

When it comes to aggressive behavior in puppies, there are two factors that come into play, namely genetics and training. Some puppies are aggressive by nature because they come from aggressive breeds, such as German Shepherd, Doberman, and Rottweiler, to name just a few. On the other hand, even puppies born from parents that come from gentle breeds can become aggressive if left exposed to aggressiveness, such as how they are treated by their owners.

Home Obedience Training for Dogs

You don't have to enroll your pup in dog obedience training classes. You can do this all on your won. In puppies, the earliest signs of aggressiveness come in the form of biting, which puppies normally do as part of play. Your puppy might grip you with his teeth when you play with him and this is acceptable behavior but only up to a certain level. When the biting becomes harder, it's time to draw the line and let your puppy know that what he is doing is not okay. You will have to introduce dog training obedience. You will have to teach him the concept of bite inhibition, and you can do this by ignoring overtures for play the moment his biting hurts or becomes too hard.

The next thing to watch out for is food guarding. Let your puppy know that there is enough food for him and that he can come to you when he's hungry. Of course, you'll have to teach him signs he can use to let you know he wants to eat, such as jumping on the table or barking at his bowl. Excessive barking, by the way, is another sign of aggressive behavior. Puppies are likely to bark at moving and sounding objects. But if your puppy's barks last for minutes on end and come at frequent intervals, you'll have to take actions to make him know it's unacceptable behavior.

The best thing you can do to ensure success in obedience training for dogs, or in this case your very first puppy, is to implement an effective reward system. Reward your puppy every time he shows good behavior; on the other hand, it isn't necessary that you punish your dog when he shows poor behavior. What you want to do is emphasize the privileges and gifts he will receive if he obeys the rules you have laid down. Consistency is key; with practice, your puppy will grow into a well-trained, well-disciplined dog you can trust and be proud of.

Finally, make your unofficial dog obedience training classes fun for both you and your puppy. Five to ten minutes a day will bring great results, but make sure to always end the session on a good note. You want your dog to associate training with love and affection; this way, he'll shed off extra aggressiveness willingly. Remember, puppies are imitable like babies, so if you show him aggressiveness, he's likely to copy your behavior. Words and acts of praise, such as patting him or showering him with food treats, are most welcome.

Training your dog is one of the most important things you can do to control any behavioural problems you may have. But your author Justin looks after more than just dog training. Dog nutrition is another aspect that just like children can cause your dog problems. To learn more check out my site about Dot Treat Recipes.

In Home Dog Training

There are many people who love to have dogs as pets in their home. They keep these pets just for fun. But you should remember that it does not happen in the same way all the time. Some people prefer dogs for security purposes. They train their pet especially for bad situations. However, you should remember that dog training is a great task. Training a pet is always a difficult and time-consuming task. You have to communicate your pet with great patience, courage and motivation. Otherwise, you cannot achieve desired results easily.

Dog's training always requires some motivation. Small pets, especially dogs and cats, behave just like human kids. They love rewards, food and toys same like our babies do love. So, while treating a pet, always behave it like a kid. For example, if you are introducing some manners to your dog and it learns them well, you can simply give some delicious food as a reward. On the other hand, if your dog starts learning behaviors, you can introduce some interesting toys to motivate it further. These toys not only motivate your dog to do better performance but also give strength to its muscles and body.

Here I am describing some examples to train your dog. For example, if your dog is interested in ball, you can ask it to sit. If it sits properly according to your desire, then you can throw ball toward it as a reward. This is a motivational game with the help of toys with your pet.

You can also motivate your pet with the help of different saying like good, nice and you can tap its back as well. Dogs are wise enough to understand all these clues. You should always encourage them so that they can improve further. You should ask your dog to be obedient. However, it is remember to note here that in the beginning, obedience requests must be short otherwise your dog will loose its interest in further training. Remember, your behavior plays a vital role to speed up the learning of your dog.
