So you're going away and you're thinking about bringing your pet. With a little bit of planning, you can have a successful trip, making memories of a lifetime together. Many people wouldn't think of traveling without their pet and you don't have to either. With a few simple tips and the right gear, your trip can be stress free for you and your pet.

If you've decided to head out on the open road with your pet in tow, the first thing you need to do is make sure your pet will not get sick or overly stressed. While most dogs enjoy traveling in a car, many cats would rather not. To determine if your pet is ready to hit the road take them on a few short trips, slowly increasing them, until you're confident they can handle it. If all goes well, then it's time to think about how you're going to transport your new road mate.

A portable kennel is the safest way for your pet to ride in the car. The type of kennel you choose is largely dependent on the type of vehicle you're driving as well as your personal preferences. If you have a sport utility vehicle or van, you may wish to consider a kennel that acts as a barrier, confining your pet to one spot, typically the cargo area. Barriers are made of metal, plastic or mesh and are installed behind the last row of seats, where the cargo area begins.

There are also portable pet kennels that keep your pet confined to a limited space. These typically have a handle and come in plastic, metal, nylon or cloth. The advantage of a portable pet kennel and the barrier type is that you don't have to give up the entire cargo area to your pet if you don't want to. The portable kennel can take up as much or as little space as you wish, depending on the size of your pet.

When traveling with your pet it is imperative that you have a collar with identification on them at all times. Included in your travel papers should be your pet's vaccination record to include their last rabies vaccine. You need to have enough food and water readily accessible that will last for the entire trip. Also, bringing along a familiar blanket, bed or toy can help calm your pet. Never leave your pet alone in a car with the windows up or down. You risk having your pet stolen or placing them at risk for heat exhaustion. Are you confused about which wire to use when getting your electronic dog fence. The 2 most common types of dog fence wire are 18 Gage and 20 Gage. Which should you choose for your situation and why? Obviously, both gages work for all underground fence systems or Innotek, PetSafe or other manufacturers would not pack their dog fence systems with 20 Gage wire. Perimeter Technologies pack their dog fence systems with 20 g or 18 g. This dog fence wire can often be very difficult to find, as individual rolls, unless the retailer actually sells the dog fence kits and sometimes they do not even sell the extra wire rolls separately.

However, there are some recommended guidelines that will help you decide which dog fence wire will be better for you. First 18 Gage is stronger and more durable and long lasting than 20 Gage Boundary wire. Solid core copper wire is better than stranded wire.

Here are some guidelines to follow:

Use 18 Gage if you have

• Rocky soil or rocks
• If you are not burying the wire
• Many trees or vegetation
• Larger than 5 acres

Use 20 Gage if you have:

• Loose sandy or clay soil
• Putting wire next to a fence
• Few trees or vegetation
• 5 acres or smaller area

PLEASE NOTE - If installing an electronic dog fence above ground, you will need to use lawn staples every 5 feet to keep the wire in place. If the wire moves around then the dog will become confused about where his boundaries are. These are sold in packages of about 100 staples. One package will take care of one 500 foot spool of wire. Where you cut grass, it is best to bury the wire.

A few important tips to keep in mind when purchasing a fence system:

-Installing the wire underground the best tool to use is an edger, a gas powered edger or an edger that also lays cable at the same time, it could be called a cable layer or edger-trencher. The wire only needs to be buried 2 -3 in but can go deeper if you want.

-Never mix 2 types of wire! Mixed wire can give you signal problems and affect the functioning of your system. If you use 20 Gage stranded to start, then stick with 20 Gage stranded. Don't go from stranded to solid core. The same goes for all the different types and sizes of wire. If more than 500 foot is being purchased for larger areas, make sure that extra wire is the same type of wire.

- If you are using the pre-twisted wire you must use 20 Gage twisted wire with 20 Gage solid core wire and if you are using 18 Gage wire for your fence you must use 18 Gage twisted wire. Pre-twisted wire is use to create a gateway or place where the dog can cross the dog fence wire and not get a stimulation or shock from his collar.

-NEVER attach or weave dog your fencing wire through a CHAIN LINK FENCE or metal fence; it will negatively affect the functioning of the fence systems.

-If you have an existing fence that your dog jumps, climbs over or digs under, it would be best to put the electric fence wire at least one foot inside the existing fence, not attach it to the existing fence. That way the dog will be able to get the collar, he is wearing, to cross the wire in order to get a shock . If the dog fence wire is too close to the existing wooden or chain link fence then the dog will not get a shock and not be deterred.

-If you are running the dog fence wire going through a forest or heavily treed area, where you cannot bury the wire, just leave it on the surface. Use staples or trees to keep the wire in place and the ground will grow up over it. It is important to bury the wire where you will be cutting grass over the wire.

-The wire is waterproof with a Polyurethane coating and can also go through wet or swampy areas and still work just fine.

-IMPORTANT, if your are ordering extra rolls of wire, you should always order an extra set of 50 boundary flags with every extra roll of 500 foot of wire that you purchase. It is important for your pet to know the boundary. If you order 1500 foot of wire for example, you should get 150 boundary flags.

If you currently own a dog that seems a bit hard to train then you might be considering buying an electronic dog training collar. While the idea of using an electronic collar may be appealing it is important to understand that it is just another method of training your dog. It is not the be all and end all of dog training, but used properly it can deliver very good results when other training methods just donÂ’t seem to work.

When you go to buy an electronic dog training collar be aware that you will find several different types that have differences in how they work. The type most people are familiar with is the electronic shock collar, which emits a low voltage charge that gets the dog attention. There are two other types of electric dog collars, one that works by emitting a high pitched sound that the dog finds extremely annoying and the other choice is a citronella collar that works by squirting citronella in front of the dogÂ’s nose. Dogs do not particularly like the smell of citronella. No matter which version you choose they all work by getting your dogs attention and annoying it in an unpleasant way. Dogs, much like humans, will do whatever is necessary to avoid these annoyances even if it means obeying their owner.

Using an electronic dog training collar is rather straightforward, but remember, it is only a tool to help you achieve the results you want with your dog. The collar won’t train your dog for you; it is a tool that you use to reprimand your dog when it does not obey your commands. For instance when training your dog to sit give the command “sit”, push gently but firmly on the lower back which makes your dog assume the sitting position. You must do this several times so the dog understands what you are asking it to do. Only after demonstrating to the dog several times what he is to do with a certain command do you try and give the command without any human intervention, ie pushing his but down. A dog that catches on quick and obeys should be praised and rewarded with a treat. If the dog refuses to obey this is the time to use the electronic collar. After getting your dogs attention with the collar start over by giving the command and pushing his hind end down into the sitting position and repeat the whole process over.

One of the more popular uses for an electronic dog training collar is the invisible fence. By running a thin wire around the outside of your yard the dog that sets off a beeping alarm whenever your dog approaches the property boundaries the dog learns to stay on your property and not wander off. If the dog ignores the beeping and continues to approach the boundary the collar will give a low grade shock that gets his attention. Soon the dog learns to recognize the beeping and what ignoring the warning means. It should be mentioned that while this method works with the majority of dogs if your dog is overly aggressive no amount of beeping, citronella, or electrical shock will keep him from running through an invisible fence boundary.

Using an electronic dog training collar is a good alternative to training a hard to train dog as long as it is used for its intended purpose. This type of dog collar should be used as a training tool that helps modify a dogÂ’s behavior. It should never be used as a way to punish or in any way inflict needless pain on a dog. Used correctly chances are you will only need to use it sparingly and before long your dog will learn to obey your commands without it.

Using a leave command will give you much greater control over what your dog eats and sniffs when you are out walking the streets. You can also use it at home or any situation. The leave command is essentially a word that tells your dog not to sniff or eat something and it is the first step in training food refusal. There is not usually a hand signal involved in this type of training because it is more than likely used when you are walking and as your dog may be on the leash, you will not have your hands free.

Why should I use a leave command?

A leave command is a very useful tool to have in your dog training toolkit because it is easy to train and can be used in a variety of situations. It is also very important because it can stop your dog from eating something that may make it sick or may cause choking.

How do I start training a leave command?

Choose the word you want to use - some trainers use the word 'leave'. You can do either or both of the following. For the quickest and best results, do both and ask someone to help you when training food refusal. When you are out in the street and your dog goes to sniff or eat something off the ground, say 'leave' and keep walking. Don't give your dog the opportunity to get to it anyway by walking quickly away. Because this is a form of capturing, it will take some time because you are reliant on there being something on the ground. The second method is better because you have full control and can practise it anytime.

Choose a food that your dog likes and leave a very small pile on the ground. Put your dog on the leash and walk by the food. Walk close enough for him to sniff it but not too close so he can reach it. Give the leave command just as your dog goes for the food. In all good training timing is everything. Your dog needs to understand what you want straight away. You need to interrupt his behaviour as soon as it starts.

When you are walking past, give your dog praise. If you want to use treats to reward him, wait until you are five paces away. Your dog needs to learn that he is being rewarded for leaving the food on the ground and walking away so putting a small distance between the treat and the food on the ground will reinforce this.

FOOD REFUSAL

Food refusal can save your dog from eating poisoned food or over eating. Training food refusal may take a long time depending upon your dog's appetite and with some breeds like Labradors it needs constant practise and reminders.

Before you begin food refusal, choose an 'eat' command. Some people use 'eat' and others 'OK'. Whatever word you choose has to be different from any other word you use for your training.

Put your dog on his leash and get him into a sit. Ask someone to walk up to him and offer him some treats. It is important that you keep your dog in a sit and only let him have the treats when you say so. If he learns forward and stands up, re-command him into a sit and ask the person with the food to step away. When he can sit and wait for your command to eat, that's when he has learnt what you want. Now you have to practise and start making his training more intense.

Remember: always give your dog or puppy the opportunity to correct his behaviour and do the right thing. It is up to you to teach him what is acceptable and what is not. Reward acceptable behaviour; discourage unacceptable behaviour by using loud unpleasant noises, withdrawal of attention or treats or leaving your puppy on its own. Never hit or strike your puppy; you will only be teaching him that violence is an acceptable behaviour in your pack and he may use it on other pack members or friends including children.

Before the world even knew of the expression teacup chihuahua, regular chihuahuas have had quite a history of their own. They were first registered with the American Kennel Club in 1904 after being discovered in the Chihuahua state, a mexican region, bordering Texas and New Mexico. This also gave rise to the name of the breed.

As many times happens with history, there are slightly different versions as to the origin of what became the teacup chihuahua. If we comine known facts they are said to come from the ancient Techichi dogs of the Toltec Civilisation near Mexico City. The Azteks conqured the Toltecs and turned these dogs in to sacred icons of the upper class, giving them religious meaning. Todays chihuahuas are smaller in size than were the Techichis, which was also mute.

This dog is then believed to have been crossed with an oriental dog, a hairless breed that gave modern teacup chihuahuas more of the look they have today, smaller and smooth-coated with vocal resources that surpass their size. Where the stories differ is partly as to how this hairless breed came to that part of the world. Some say these early chihuahua ancestors immigrated across the Bering Strait land bridge.

Others claim they were brought by Spanish settlers who had established trade routes with China. In support for this theory is stated that China has well documented practices of cultivating both animals and plants to be smaller in size. In a historic letter found to be written by the famous Christopher Columbus is said that he found a small dog on the island of Cuba that was mute. This adds to the speculation of the orgins of the chihuahua.

There are different forms of support for the above theories, ranging from DNA to painted ancient artwork, though the the teacup chihuahua history might remain somewhat of a mystery, especially as to how they ended up where they were first discovered as a breed in 1884 and adopted into the AKC twenty years later. In England the breed was not registred until another twenty years later.

Even though its past in some parts still remain a mystery nobody can deny that this small dog with the big temper remains a favorite with many. The small chihuauas nicknamed teacup chihuahuas have made history in the past and continue to do so today on movie screen, TV, commercials and in homes worldwide.

As you begin your search for a dog, you are probably asking yourself, "What type of dog would be best for me?" Dogs come in many different sizes, colors, coats, and personalities. Start your dog ownership off on the right foot by doing your research before you settle on a breed.

While there are around 400 recognized breeds, the best place to start is by looking at the approx. 155 breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club, broken down into seven broad categories. Within each breed category are subgroups.

Sporting Group

Sporting dogs were originally bred to help man hunt birds by retrieving the birds from water or bushes. Nature has conditioned them to retrieve; they also love fetching balls and newspapers, and they make great companions. Members of the Sporting Group include retrievers, pointers, setters, and spaniels. A naturally active breed, regular brisk exercise is a must with these dogs to avoid excessive chewing, jumping and barking.

Hound Group

Hounds were originally bred for hunting. There are three main subgroups: scent hounds, sighthounds, and large game hounds. Sighthounds make gentle pets, but they love to run after fast-moving targets. They include the Greyhound, Irish Wolfhound, and Whippet. Scent hounds follow their nose and it can be difficult to get their attention when they are on the trail of something. They are sweet, loving, and make good companions. Among them are the Beagle and Bloodhound. Large game hounds like the Rhodesian Ridgeback were bred to hunt lions, elk and other game. They are powerful, fearless and make good watch dogs.

Working Group

The breeds in this group were bred to help man. Their jobs range from rescue to sledding and guarding. They are intelligent, learn quickly, and make good companions. However, most of them are very large, strong dogs and they may not be suitable for families with young children. Proper training is very important with these breeds. Among the breeds are sled dogs like the Siberian Husky and Samoyed; draft dogs that were bred to pull heavy loads like the Bernese Mountain Dog; guard dogs including the Bullmastiff, Rottweiler and Akita; and rescue/water dogs such as the Newfoundland and Saint Bernard.

Herding Group

Dogs in the herding group were, you've guessed it, bred to herd. They are lively, agile, alert, respond well to training, and make great pets. They love lots of exercise and if they can't find a sheep to herd they will happily (and gently) herd their owners or children. Herding dog include the Australian Shepherd, Border Collie, German Shepherd, Old English Sheepdog, Cardigan Welsh Corgi and Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

Non-Sporting Group

Originally many of these dogs were working dogs, but these days they are mainly companions. These breeds vary widely in size, coat, temperament, and personality. Among the diverse breeds are the Bichon Frise, Chow Chow, French Bulldog, Keeshond, Poodle, and Schipperke.

Terrier Group

Terriers are a determined bunch, and original bred as either vermin hunters or fighting breeds. Vermin hunters are lively, independent and do best on a leash when outdoors. Terriers can become barkers or chewers if not properly trained, and sometimes can get aggressive over food or toys. The fighter group includes the Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier. The Toy breeds are very small, playful, devoted to their owners, and love and demand attention. Their main purpose is to be adorable and they are terrific lapdog. They need less exercise than other breeds and do well in apartments or other small quarters, and are a good choice for older people. Some, however, may bark or snap if they are not trained. Toy Breeds include the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Chihuahua, Maltese, Pekinese, Pug, and Toy Poodle.
